Abstract:This is a written version of the opening talk at the 6th International Workshop on Chiral Dynamics, at the University of Bern, Switzerland, July 6, 2009, to be published in the proceedings of the Workshop. In it, I reminisce about the early development of effective field theories of the strong interactions, comment briefly on some other applications of effective field theories, and then take up the idea that the Standard Model and General Relativity are the leading terms in an effective field theory. Finally, I cite recent calculations that suggest that the effective field theory of gravitation and matter is asymptotically safe.

Abstract:Effective field theory is applied to finite-density systems with an unnaturally large scattering length, such as neutron matter. A new organizational scheme is identified and connected with an expansion in inverse powers of the number of space-time dimensions. This power counting allows for analytic calculations in many-body systems and reproduces the hole-line expansion of traditional nuclear physics.

Abstract:The method of effective field theories (EFTs) is developed for the scattering of two particles at wavelengths which are large compared to the range of their interaction. It is shown that the renormalized EFT is equivalent to the effective range expansion, to a Schroedinger equation with a pseudo-potential, and to an energy expansion of a generic boundary condition at the origin. The roles of regulators and potentials are also discussed. These ideas are exemplified in a toy model.

Abstract:We derive scalar effective field theories - Lagrangians, symmetries, and all - from on-shell scattering amplitudes constructed purely from Lorentz invariance, factorization, a fixed power counting order in derivatives, and a fixed order at which amplitudes vanish in the soft limit. These constraints leave free parameters in the amplitude which are the coupling constants of well-known theories: Nambu-Goldstone bosons, Dirac-Born-Infeld scalars, and Galileons. Moreover, soft limits imply conditions on the Noether current which can then be inverted to derive Lagrangians for each theory. We propose a natural classification of all scalar effective field theories according to two numbers which encode the derivative power counting and soft behavior of the corresponding amplitudes. In those cases where there is no consistent amplitude, the corresponding theory does not exist.

Abstract:Quantum Field Theory provides a theoretical framework for understanding fields and the particles associated with them, and is the basis of particle physics and condensed matter research. This graduate level textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to quantum field theory, giving equal emphasis to operator and path integral formalisms. It covers modern research such as helicity spinors, BCFW construction and generalized unitarity cuts; as well as treating advanced topics including BRST quantization, loop equations, and finite temperature field theory. Effective Field Theory for the Bound States and Scattering of a Heavy Charged Particle and a Neutral Atom

Abstract:We show the system of a heavy charged particle and a neutral atom can be described by a low-energy effective field theory where the attractive $1/r^4$ induced dipole potential determines the long-distance/low-energy wave functions. The $1/r^4$ interaction is renormalized by a contact interaction at leading order. Derivative corrections to that contact interaction give rise to higher-order terms. We show that this ``Induced-dipole EFT'' (ID-EFT) reproduces the $\pi^+$-hydrogen phase shifts of a more microscopic potential, the Temkin-Lamkin potential, over a wide range of energies. Already at leading order it also describes the highest-lying excited bound states of the pionic-hydrogen ion. Lower-lying bound states receive substantial corrections at next-to-leading order, with the size of the correction proportional to their distance from the scattering threshold. Our next-to-leading order calculation shows that the three highest-lying bound states of the Temkin-Lamkin potential are well-described in ID-EFT.

The effective field theory of extended Wilson lines

Abstract:We construct the effective theory of electrically charged, spatially extended, infinitely heavy objects at leading power. The theory may be viewed as a generalization of NRQED for particles with a finite charge distribution where the charge radius and higher moments of the charge distribution are counted as $O(1)$ rather than $O(1/M)$. We show this is equivalent to a Wilson line traced by the worldline of an extended charge distribution. Our canonical use case is atomic nuclei with large charge $Z\gg 1$. The theory allows for the insertion of external operators and is sufficiently general to allow a treatment of both electromagnetic and weak mediated lepton-nucleus scattering including charged-current processes. This provides a first step towards the factorization of Coulomb regions, including structure dependence arising from a finite charge distribution, for scattering with nuclei.

Abstract:A bstract We derive an effective field theory for general chaotic two-dimensional conformal field theories with a large central charge. The theory is a specific and calculable instance of a more general framework recently proposed in [ 1 ]. We discuss the gauge symmetries of the model and how they relate to the Lyapunov behaviour of certain correlators. We calculate the out-of-time-ordered correlators diagnosing quantum chaos, as well as certain more fine-grained higher-point generalizations, using our Lorentzian effective field theory. We comment on potential future applications of the effective theory to real-time thermal physics and conformal field theory.

Abstract:This is a brief history of what I consider as very important, some of which truly seminal, contributions made by young Korean nuclear theorists, mostly graduate students working on PhD thesis in 1990's and early 2000's, to nuclear effective field theory, nowadays heralded as the first-principle approach to nuclear physics. The theoretical framework employed is an effective field theory anchored on a scale-invariant hidden local symmetric Lagrangian constructed along the line of Weinberg's "Folk Theorem" on effective field theory. The problems addressed are the high-precision calculations on the thermal $np$ capture, the solar $pp$ fusion process, the solar $hep$ process -- John Bahcall's challenge to nuclear theorists -- and the quenching of $g_A$ in giant Gamow-Teller resonances and the whopping enhancement of first-forbidden beta transitions in astrophysical processes. Extending adventurously the strategy to a wild uncharted domain in which a systematic implementation of the "theorem" is far from obvious, the same effective Lagrangian is applied to the structure of compact stars. A surprising result on the properties of massive stars, totally different from what has been obtained up to day in the literature, is predicted, such as the precocious onset of conformal sound velocity together with the possible emergence of hidden symmetries such as scale symmetry and hidden local symmetry.

Abstract:This book presents thermal field theory techniques, which can be applied in both cosmology and the theoretical description of the QCD plasma generated in heavy-ion collision experiments. It focuses on gauge interactions (whether weak or strong), which are essential in both contexts. As well as the many differences in the physics questions posed and in the microscopic forces playing a central role, the authors also explain the similarities and the techniques, such as the resummations, that are needed for developing a formally consistent perturbative expansion. The formalism is developed step by step, starting from quantum mechanics; introducing scalar, fermionic and gauge fields; describing the issues of infrared divergences; resummations and effective field theories; and incorporating systems with finite chemical potentials. With this machinery in place, the important class of real-time (dynamic) observables is treated in some detail. This is followed by an overview of a number of applications, ranging from the study of phase transitions and particle production rate computations, to the concept of transport and damping coefficients that play a ubiquitous role in current developments. The book serves as a self-contained textbook on relativistic thermal field theory for undergraduate and graduate students of theoretical high-energy physics.
Effective field theories for collective excitations of atomic nuclei

Abstract:Collective modes emerge as the relevant degrees of freedom that govern low-energy excitations of atomic nuclei. These modes - rotations, pairing rotations, and vibrations - are separated in energy from non-collective excitations, making it possible to describe them in the framework of effective field theory. Rotations and pairing rotations are the remnants of Nambu-Goldstone modes from the emergent breaking of rotational symmetry and phase symmetries in finite deformed and finite superfluid nuclei, respectively. The symmetry breaking severely constrains the structure of low-energy Lagrangians and thereby clarifies what is essential and simplifies the description. The approach via effective field theories exposes the essence of nuclear collective excitations and is defined with a breakdown scale in mind. This permits one to make systematic improvements and to estimate and quantify uncertainties. Effective field theories of collective excitations have been used to compute spectra, transition rates, and other matrix elements of interest. In particular, predictions of the nuclear matrix element for neutrinoless double beta decay then come with quantified uncertainties. This review summarizes these results and also compares the approach via effective field theories to well-known models and ab initio computations.

Abstract:We explore a recently proposed effective field theory describing electromagnetically or gravitationally interacting massive particles in an expansion about their mass ratio, also known as the self-force (SF) expansion. By integrating out the deviation of the heavy particle about its inertial trajectory, we obtain an effective action whose only degrees of freedom are the lighter particle together with the photon or graviton, all propagating in a Coulomb or Schwarzschild background. The 0SF dynamics are described by the usual background field method, which at 1SF is supplemented by a "recoil operator" that encodes the wobble of the heavy particle, and similarly computable corrections appearing at 2SF and higher. Our formalism exploits the fact that the analytic expressions for classical backgrounds and particle trajectories encode dynamical information to all orders in the couplings, and from them we extract multiloop integrands for perturbative scattering. As a check, we study the two-loop classical scattering of scalar particles in electromagnetism and gravity, verifying known results. We then present new calculations for the two-loop classical scattering of dyons, and of particles interacting with an additional scalar or vector field coupling directly to the lighter particle but only gravitationally to the heavier particle.

An introduction to Thermal Field Theory and Some of its Application

Abstract:In this article an introduction to the thermal field theory within imaginary time has been discussed in details. The imaginary time formalism has been introduced through both the operatorial and the functional integration method. The prescription to perform frequency sum for boson and fermion has been discussed. Green's function both in Minkowski time as well as in Euclidean time has been derived. The tadpole diagram in $\phi^4$ theory and the self-energy in $\phi^3$ theory have been computed. The basic features of general two point functions for both fermions and bosons in presence of a heat bath have been discussed. Then the free partition functions for scalar, fermion and gauge field, and interacting scalar field have been obtained. The quantum electrodynamics (QED) and gauge fixing have been discussed in details. The one-loop self-energy for electron and photon in QED have been obtained in hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation. The dispersion properties and collective excitations of both electron and photon in a thermal medium have been presented. The spectral representation of fermion and gauge boson propagators have been obtained. In HTL approximation, the generalisation of QED results of two point functions to quantum chromodynamics (QCD) have been outlined that mostly involve group theoretical factors. As an effective field theory approach the HTL resummation and the HTL perturbation theory have been introduced. The leading order, next-to-leading order and next-to-next-leading order free energy and pressure for deconfined QCD medium created in heavy-ion collisions have been computed within HTLpt. The general features of the deconfined QCD medium have also been outlined with non-perturbative effects like gluon condensate and Gribov-Zwanziger action. The dilepton production rates from quark-gluon plasma with these non-perturbative effects have been computed.

Abstract:Light and heavy-light (b) hadrons are among the most interesting and among the most challenging quantities to calculate in lattice gauge theory. One would like to avoid discretization effects from very heavy quarks and to calculate chiral extrapolations and to calculate finite volume effects from light quarks or to minimize these effects. For this one uses effective theories: Chiral Perturbation Theory and Nonrelativistic QCD or Heavy Quark Effective Theory. Lattice results are reviewed on hadrons containing light quarks and light and b quarks, and discussed in the framework of effective theories.
