Abstract:We apply "hydrodynamic" effective field theory techniques to an ersatz Fermi liquid. Our effective theory, which captures the correlation functions of density operators at each angle on the Fermi surface, can only deviate from conventional Fermi liquid behavior if the effective theory is non-local. Neglecting non-local effects, the ersatz Fermi liquid's effective action is the Legendre transform of the effective action for Fermi liquids, based on the coadjoint orbit method, up to irrelevant corrections.

Abstract:Effective field theory is applied to finite-density systems with an unnaturally large scattering length, such as neutron matter. A new organizational scheme is identified and connected with an expansion in inverse powers of the number of space-time dimensions. This power counting allows for analytic calculations in many-body systems and reproduces the hole-line expansion of traditional nuclear physics.

Abstract:This is a written version of the opening talk at the 6th International Workshop on Chiral Dynamics, at the University of Bern, Switzerland, July 6, 2009, to be published in the proceedings of the Workshop. In it, I reminisce about the early development of effective field theories of the strong interactions, comment briefly on some other applications of effective field theories, and then take up the idea that the Standard Model and General Relativity are the leading terms in an effective field theory. Finally, I cite recent calculations that suggest that the effective field theory of gravitation and matter is asymptotically safe.

Abstract:In this chapter I discuss the impact of concepts of Quantum Field Theory in modern Condensed Physics. Although the interplay between these two areas is certainly not new, the impact and mutual cross-fertilization has certainly grown enormously with time, and Quantum Field Theory has become a central conceptual tool in Condensed Matter Physics. In this chapter I cover how these ideas and tools have influenced our understanding of phase transitions, both classical and quantum, as well as topological phases of matter, and dualities.

Abstract:We show that the effective theory of long wavelength low energy behavior of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) with large dipole moments (treated as a classical spin) can be modeled using an extended Non-linear sigma model (NLSM) like energy functional with an additional non-local term that represents long ranged anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. Minimizing this effective energy functional we calculate the density and spin-profile of the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the mean-field regime for various trapping geometries. The resulting configurations show strong intertwining between the spin and mass density of the condensate, transfer between spin and orbital angular momentum in the form of Einstein-de Hass effect, and novel topological properties. We have also described the theoretical framework in which the collective excitations around these mean field solutions can be studied and discuss some examples qualitatively.

Abstract:Understanding Dirac-like Fermions has become an imperative in modern condensed matter sciences: all across its research frontier, from graphene to high T$_c$ superconductors to the topological insulators and beyond, various electronic systems exhibit properties which can be well described by the Dirac equation. Such physics is no longer the exclusive domain of quantum field theories and other esoteric mathematical musings; instead, real physics of real systems is governed by such equations, and important materials science and practical implications hinge on our understanding of Dirac particles in two and three dimensions. While the physics that gives rise to the massless Dirac Fermions in each of the above mentioned materials is different, the low energy properties are governed by the same Dirac kinematics. The aim of this article is to review a selected cross-section of this vast field by highlighting the generalities, and contrasting the specifics, of several physical systems.

Abstract:We present a general approach to obtain effective field theories for topological crystalline insulators whose low-energy theories are described by massive Dirac fermions. We show that these phases are characterized by the responses to spatially dependent mass parameters with interfaces. These mass interfaces implement the dimensional reduction procedure such that the state of interest is smoothly deformed into a topological crystal, which serves as a representative state of a phase in the general classification. Effective field theories are obtained by integrating out the massive Dirac fermions, and various quantized topological terms are uncovered. Our approach can be generalized to other crystalline symmetry-protected topological phases and provides a general strategy to derive effective field theories for such crystalline topological phases.

Ideas such as the Schwinger mechanism and the Volkov state are deeply related to non-linear transport and photovoltaic Hall effect in condensed matter. Here, we give a review on these relations.

Abstract:In this paper we study the theory of nonrelativistic weakly interacting Bose gas from the point of view of effective field theory. Firstly, the nonrenormalizability of the theory is briefly discussed. Then, starting from the effective Lagrangian, the lowest order contributions of Feynman diagrams are calculated for the parameters in the effective Lagrangian. These illustrate the running coupling constant phenomenon. After that, the differential align of the parameters in the effective Lagrangian is obtained. We show that the intrinsic energy scale of this effective theory can be removed, while it is not possible to do so for relativistic Bose gas. Our results can help to study the critical behavior of weakly interacting Bose gas.

Abstract:We derive scalar effective field theories - Lagrangians, symmetries, and all - from on-shell scattering amplitudes constructed purely from Lorentz invariance, factorization, a fixed power counting order in derivatives, and a fixed order at which amplitudes vanish in the soft limit. These constraints leave free parameters in the amplitude which are the coupling constants of well-known theories: Nambu-Goldstone bosons, Dirac-Born-Infeld scalars, and Galileons. Moreover, soft limits imply conditions on the Noether current which can then be inverted to derive Lagrangians for each theory. We propose a natural classification of all scalar effective field theories according to two numbers which encode the derivative power counting and soft behavior of the corresponding amplitudes. In those cases where there is no consistent amplitude, the corresponding theory does not exist.

Abstract:We construct an effective field theory for an interacting Fermi liquid with nonzero Berry curvature at zero temperature, called the Berry Fermi liquid. We start with the extended phase space formalism, incorporating physical time into the configuration space. This approach allows us to include the time dependence of the background gauge fields ``covariantly'' into the symplectic structure. Upon restricting to the physical hypersurface, the effective action that lives on the coadjoint orbit becomes the minus free energy on the extended phase space. We also derive the action perturbatively in external fields using the canonical variables. For applications, we compute both linear and nonlinear electrical responses using the Kubo formula, and identify contributions from the electric and magnetic dipole moments, which stem from interactions breaking parity and time-reversal symmetry. The anomalous Hall effect is confirmed using the kinetic theory.

Abstract:The method of effective field theories (EFTs) is developed for the scattering of two particles at wavelengths which are large compared to the range of their interaction. It is shown that the renormalized EFT is equivalent to the effective range expansion, to a Schroedinger equation with a pseudo-potential, and to an energy expansion of a generic boundary condition at the origin. The roles of regulators and potentials are also discussed. These ideas are exemplified in a toy model.

Abstract:Based on general symmetry principles we study an effective Lagrangian for a neutral system of condensed spin-1 deuteron nuclei and electrons, at greater-than-atomic but less-than-nuclear densities. We expect such matter to be present in thin layers within certain low-mass brown dwarfs. It may also be produced in future shock-wave-compression experiments as an effective fuel for laser induced nuclear fusion. We find a background solution of the effective theory describing a net spin zero condensate of deuterons with their spins aligned and anti-aligned in a certain spontaneously emerged preferred direction. The spectrum of low energy collective excitations contains two spin waves with linear dispersions -- like in antiferromagnets -- as well as gapped longitudinal and transverse modes related to the Meissner effect -- like in superconductors. We show that counting of the Nambu-Goldstone modes of spontaneously broken internal and space-time symmetries obeys, in a nontrivial way, the rules of the Goldstone theorem for Lorentz non-invariant systems. We discuss thermodynamic properties of the condensate, and its potential manifestation in the low-mass brown dwarfs.

Effective field theories for collective excitations of atomic nuclei

Abstract:Collective modes emerge as the relevant degrees of freedom that govern low-energy excitations of atomic nuclei. These modes - rotations, pairing rotations, and vibrations - are separated in energy from non-collective excitations, making it possible to describe them in the framework of effective field theory. Rotations and pairing rotations are the remnants of Nambu-Goldstone modes from the emergent breaking of rotational symmetry and phase symmetries in finite deformed and finite superfluid nuclei, respectively. The symmetry breaking severely constrains the structure of low-energy Lagrangians and thereby clarifies what is essential and simplifies the description. The approach via effective field theories exposes the essence of nuclear collective excitations and is defined with a breakdown scale in mind. This permits one to make systematic improvements and to estimate and quantify uncertainties. Effective field theories of collective excitations have been used to compute spectra, transition rates, and other matrix elements of interest. In particular, predictions of the nuclear matrix element for neutrinoless double beta decay then come with quantified uncertainties. This review summarizes these results and also compares the approach via effective field theories to well-known models and ab initio computations.

Abstract:A bstract We derive an effective field theory for general chaotic two-dimensional conformal field theories with a large central charge. The theory is a specific and calculable instance of a more general framework recently proposed in [ 1 ]. We discuss the gauge symmetries of the model and how they relate to the Lyapunov behaviour of certain correlators. We calculate the out-of-time-ordered correlators diagnosing quantum chaos, as well as certain more fine-grained higher-point generalizations, using our Lorentzian effective field theory. We comment on potential future applications of the effective theory to real-time thermal physics and conformal field theory.

Abstract:We introduce an effective scalar field theory to describe the He-IV phase diagram, which can be considered as a generalization of the XY model which gives the usual lambda-transition. This theory results from a Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian with higher order derivatives, which allow to produce transitions between the superfluid, normal liquid and solid phases of He-IV. Mean field and Monte Carlo analyses suggest that this model is able to reproduce the main qualitative features of He-IV phase transitions.
