Abstract:We apply "hydrodynamic" effective field theory techniques to an ersatz Fermi liquid. Our effective theory, which captures the correlation functions of density operators at each angle on the Fermi surface, can only deviate from conventional Fermi liquid behavior if the effective theory is non-local. Neglecting non-local effects, the ersatz Fermi liquid's effective action is the Legendre transform of the effective action for Fermi liquids, based on the coadjoint orbit method, up to irrelevant corrections.

Effective field theory of the classical two-dimensional plasma

Abstract:Using techniques of effective field theory, we consider the thermodynamical properties of a dilute two-dimensional plasma interacting via a $1/r$ potential. The first one-loop correction to the partition function is already logarithmically divergent in the effective theory. The finite part of the one-loop induced couplings is then explicitly evaluated by matching the density-density correlator in the effective theory and in the full quantum theory. This task is performed from the formulation of the Coulomb problem in momentum space by projecting the two-dimensional momentum space onto the surface of a three-dimensional sphere. We also report some higher order results that, in the case of the one-component plasma immersed in a uniform neutralizing background, are resummed to obtain the complete leading-log partition function.

Abstract:We discuss corrections to the Casimir effect at finite temperature and effective field theory. Recently, it has been shown that effective field theories can reproduce radiative corrections to the Casimir energy calculated in full QED. We apply effective field theory methods at finite temperature and reproduce the Casimir free energy. We show that the system undergoes dimensional reduction at high temperature and that it can be described by an effective three-dimensional field theory.

Abstract:These lectures serve as an introduction to the renormalization group approach to effective field theories, with emphasis on systems with a Fermi surface. For such systems, demanding appropriate scaling with respect to the renormalization group for the appropriate excitations leads directly to the important concept of quasiparticles and the connexion between large-N_f treatments and renormalization group running in theory space. In such treatments N_f denotes the number of effective fermionic degrees of freedom above the Fermi surface; this number is roughly proportional to the size of the Fermi surface. As an application of these ideas, non-trivial infra red structure in three dimensional U(1) gauge theory is discussed, along with applications to the normal phase physics of high-T_c superconductors, in an attempt to explain the experimentally observed deviations from Fermi liquid behaviour. Specifically, the direct current resistivity of the theory is computed at finite temperatures, $T$, and is found to acquire $O(1/N_f)$ corrections to the linear $T$ behaviour. Such scaling corrections are consistent with recent experimental observations in high T_c superconducting cuprates.

Abstract:We extend to finite temperature the fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions (QPTs). This is done by resorting to the notion of mixed-state fidelity that allows one to compare two density matrices corresponding to two different thermal states. By exploiting the same concept we also propose a finite-temperature generalization of the Loschmidt echo. Explicit analytical expressions of these quantities are given for a class of quasi-free fermionic Hamiltonians. A numerical analysis is performed as well showing that the associated QPTs show their signatures in a finite range of temperatures.

Abstract:This is a written version of the opening talk at the 6th International Workshop on Chiral Dynamics, at the University of Bern, Switzerland, July 6, 2009, to be published in the proceedings of the Workshop. In it, I reminisce about the early development of effective field theories of the strong interactions, comment briefly on some other applications of effective field theories, and then take up the idea that the Standard Model and General Relativity are the leading terms in an effective field theory. Finally, I cite recent calculations that suggest that the effective field theory of gravitation and matter is asymptotically safe.

Abstract:These lecture notes illustrate the application of Dyson-Schwinger equations in QCD. The extensive body of work at zero temperature and chemical potential is represented by a selection of contemporary studies that focus on solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation, deriving an exact mass formula in QCD that describes light and heavy pseudoscalar mesons simultaneously, and the calculation of the electromagnetic pion form factor and the vector-meson electroproduction cross sections. These applications emphasize the qualitative importance of the momentum-dependent dressing of elementary Schwinger functions in QCD, which provides a unifying connection between disparate phenomena. They provide a solid foundation for an extension of the approach to nonzero temperature and chemical potential. The essential, formal elements of this application are described, and four contemporary studies are employed to exemplify the method and its efficacy. They study the demarcation of the phase boundary for deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration, the calculation of bulk thermodynamic properties of the quark-gluon plasma, and the response of pi- and rho- meson observables to T and mu. Along the way a continuum order parameter for deconfinement is introduced, an anticorrelation between the response of masses and decay constants to T and their response to mis elucidated, and a (T, mu) mirroring of the slow approach of bulk thermodynamic quantities to their ultrarelativistic limit is highlighted. Abstract:Different formalisms used in the perturbative approach to Thermal Field Theory (TFT) are briefly reviewed. The rate of production of a virtual photon in a quark-gluon plasma is then discussed to illustrate some features of TFT before introducing the Hard Thermal Loop resummation which improves the behaviour of the theory in the infrared sector. Some of the successes of this appraoch are described before turning to the problems associated to the undamped transverse gluon oscillations and the light-cone singularities arising when on-shell and/or massless particles are involved.

Abstract:This book presents thermal field theory techniques, which can be applied in both cosmology and the theoretical description of the QCD plasma generated in heavy-ion collision experiments. It focuses on gauge interactions (whether weak or strong), which are essential in both contexts. As well as the many differences in the physics questions posed and in the microscopic forces playing a central role, the authors also explain the similarities and the techniques, such as the resummations, that are needed for developing a formally consistent perturbative expansion. The formalism is developed step by step, starting from quantum mechanics; introducing scalar, fermionic and gauge fields; describing the issues of infrared divergences; resummations and effective field theories; and incorporating systems with finite chemical potentials. With this machinery in place, the important class of real-time (dynamic) observables is treated in some detail. This is followed by an overview of a number of applications, ranging from the study of phase transitions and particle production rate computations, to the concept of transport and damping coefficients that play a ubiquitous role in current developments. The book serves as a self-contained textbook on relativistic thermal field theory for undergraduate and graduate students of theoretical high-energy physics.
Finite Temperature Scaling, Bounds, and Inequalities for the Non-interacting Density Functionals

Abstract:Finite temperature density functional theory requires representations for the internal energy, entropy, and free energy as functionals of the local density field. A central formal difficulty for an orbital-free representation is construction of the corresponding functionals for non-interacting particles in an arbitrary external potential. That problem is posed here in the context of the equilibrium statistical mechanics of an inhomogeneous system. The density functionals are defined and shown to be equal to the extremal state for a functional of the reduced one-particle statistical operators. Convexity of the latter functionals implies a class of general inequalities. First, it is shown that the familiar von Weizsäcker lower bound for zero temperature functionals applies at finite temperature as well. An upper bound is obtained in terms of a single-particle statistical operator corresponding to the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Next, the behavior of the density functionals under coordinate scaling is obtained. The inequalities are exploited to obtain a class of upper and lower bounds at constant temperature, and a complementary class at constant density. The utility of such constraints and their relationship to corresponding results at zero temperature are discussed.

Abstract:Effective field theory is applied to finite-density systems with an unnaturally large scattering length, such as neutron matter. A new organizational scheme is identified and connected with an expansion in inverse powers of the number of space-time dimensions. This power counting allows for analytic calculations in many-body systems and reproduces the hole-line expansion of traditional nuclear physics.

Fermions at finite density in the path integral approach

Abstract:We study relativistic fermionic systems in 3 + 1 spacetime dimensions at finite chemical potential and zero temperature, from a path-integral point of view. We show how to properly account for the iε term that projects on the finite density ground state, and compute the path integral analytically for free fermions in homogeneous external backgrounds, using complex analysis techniques. As an application, we show that the U(1) symmetry is always linearly realized for free fermions at finite charge density, differently from scalars. We study various aspects of finite density QED in a homogeneous magnetic background. We compute the free energy density, non-perturbatively in the electromagnetic coupling and the external magnetic field, obtaining the finite density generalization of classic results of Euler-Heisenberg and Schwinger. We also obtain analytically the magnetic susceptibility of a relativistic Fermi gas at finite density, reproducing the de Haas-van Alphen effect. Finally, we consider a (generalized) Gross-Neveu model for N interacting fermions at finite density. We compute its non-perturbative effective potential in the large- N limit, and discuss the fate of the U(1) vector and axial symmetries.

Abstract:We investigate Fermi gases at finite temperature for which the in-medium effective mass may not be constant as a function of the density, the temperature, or the chemical potential. We suggest a formalism that separates the terms for which the mass is constant from the terms which explicitly treat the correction due to the in-medium effective mass. We employ the ensemble equivalence in infinite matter in order to treat these different terms. Our formalism is applied in nuclear matter and we show its goodness by comparing it to an exact treatment based on the numerical calculation of the Fermi integrals.

Abstract:A previous analysis of scaling, bounds, and inequalities for the non-interacting functionals of thermal density functional theory is extended to the full interacting functionals. The results are obtained from analysis of the related functionals from the equilibrium statistical mechanics of thermodynamics for an inhomogeneous system. Their extension to the functionals of density functional theory is described.

Abstract:A three-dimensional effective theory of Polyakov loops has recently been derived from Wilson’s Yang-Mills lattice action by means of a strong coupling expansion. It is valid in the confined phase up to the deconfinement phase transition, for which it predicts the correct order and gives quantitative estimates for the critical coupling. In this work we study its predictive power for further observables like correlation functions and the equation of state. We find that the effective theory correctly reproduces qualitative features and symmetries of the full theory as the continuum is approached. Regarding quantitative predictions, we identify two classes of observables by numerical comparison as well as analytic calculations: correlation functions and their associated mass scales cannot be described accurately from a truncated effective theory, due to its inherently non-local nature involving long-range couplings. On the other hand, phase transitions and bulk thermodynamic quantities are accurately reproduced by the leading local part of the effective theory. In particular, the effective theory description is numerically superior when computing the equation of state at low temperatures or the properties of the phase transition.

Finite Temperature Effects in Ultracold Fermi Gases

Abstract:This article is written as a Lecture given in the 2006 Varenna Summer School on "Ultracold Fermi Gases". Here we present a review of BCS--Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover theory with emphasis on finite temperature effects. We discuss the role of temperature $T$ as it enters a theoretical formalism which is based on the standard BCS-Leggett ground state. We also discuss the role of temperature in the context of experiments ranging from thermometric issues to signatures of superfluidity. Particularly important to this discussion is the novel normal state associated with the crossover regime, intermediate between BCS and BEC. The experimental evidence for this unusual normal state (associated with pre-formed pairs) and its counterpart below $T_c$ (associated with non-condensed pairs) is presented in the context of different experiments. We end with a discussion of finite temperature effects in spin polarized superfluids, where $T$ is found to play a crucial role in both theory and experiment.
