Abstract:We study relativistic fermionic systems in 3 + 1 spacetime dimensions at finite chemical potential and zero temperature, from a path-integral point of view. We show how to properly account for the iε term that projects on the finite density ground state, and compute the path integral analytically for free fermions in homogeneous external backgrounds, using complex analysis techniques. As an application, we show that the U(1) symmetry is always linearly realized for free fermions at finite charge density, differently from scalars. We study various aspects of finite density QED in a homogeneous magnetic background. We compute the free energy density, non-perturbatively in the electromagnetic coupling and the external magnetic field, obtaining the finite density generalization of classic results of Euler-Heisenberg and Schwinger. We also obtain analytically the magnetic susceptibility of a relativistic Fermi gas at finite density, reproducing the de Haas-van Alphen effect. Finally, we consider a (generalized) Gross-Neveu model for N interacting fermions at finite density. We compute its non-perturbative effective potential in the large- N limit, and discuss the fate of the U(1) vector and axial symmetries.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the realization mode of \(U(1)_V\) symmetry in the fermion system at finite density. Specifically, the authors explored whether the \(U(1)_V\) symmetry of the relativistic fermion system is linearly realized or spontaneously broken under the conditions of finite chemical potential and zero temperature. To answer this question, they adopted the path - integral method and paid special attention to the \(i\epsilon\) term in the path integral, which is a key component for selecting the ground state at finite density. ### Main problems of the paper 1. **Symmetry realization mode**: - Study whether the \(U(1)_V\) symmetry of the free fermion system at finite density is spontaneously broken. - Prove through the path - integral method that the free fermion system will not spontaneously break the \(U(1)_V\) symmetry at finite density. 2. **The \(i\epsilon\) term in the path integral**: - Explore how to correctly handle the \(i\epsilon\) term in the path integral to ensure that it can be projected onto the correct finite - density ground state. - Analyze the role of the \(i\epsilon\) term in the path integral and how it affects the different analytic structures of fermion and boson systems. 3. **Fermi gas in the magnetic field background**: - Study the free - energy density of finite - density quantum electrodynamics (QED) in the background of a uniform magnetic field. - Calculate the magnetic susceptibility of the Fermi gas at finite density and reproduce the de Haas - van Alphen effect. 4. **Interacting fermion system**: - Consider a generalized Gross - Neveu model and study the behavior of \(N\) interacting fermions at finite density. - Calculate the non - perturbative effective potential of this model in the large - \(N\) limit and discuss the fate of the \(U(1)_V\) vector symmetry and the \(Z_2^A\) axial symmetry. ### Main conclusions - **Free fermion system**: - It is proved that at finite density, the \(U(1)_V\) symmetry of the free fermion system is linearly realized and will not be spontaneously broken. - Through the path - integral method, the key role of the \(i\epsilon\) term in selecting the finite - density ground state is demonstrated. - **QED in the magnetic field background**: - The free - energy density of QED at finite density is calculated, and the finite - density generalization of the Euler - Heisenberg and Schwinger classical results is obtained. - The magnetic susceptibility of the Fermi gas at finite density is calculated, and the de Haas - van Alphen effect is reproduced. - **Gross - Neveu model**: - In the large - \(N\) limit, the non - perturbative effective potential of the generalized Gross - Neveu model is calculated. - Evidence is provided to show that this system can support the unbroken \(U(1)_V\) symmetry at finite density. ### Formula examples - **Free - energy density**: \[ f(\mu) \equiv \frac{1}{-i \text{Vol}_4} \left( \log \frac{Z[\mu]}{Z[0]} \right) \] - **The \(i\epsilon\) term in the path integral**: \[ Z[\mu] = \det \left( i \gamma^\mu D_\mu - m - \epsilon \gamma^0 \partial_0 \right) \] - **Magnetic susceptibility**: \[ \chi = \frac{\partial^2 f(\mu)}{\partial B^2} \] These formulas show some key calculation steps in the paper and help to understand how the authors reached their conclusions.
