Abstract:We study relativistic fermionic systems in $3+1$ spacetime dimensions at finite chemical potential and zero temperature, from a path-integral point of view. We show how to properly account for the $i\varepsilon$ term that projects on the finite density ground state, and compute the path integral analytically for free fermions in homogeneous external backgrounds, using complex analysis techniques. As an application, we show that the ${\rm U}(1)$ symmetry is always linearly realized for free fermions at finite charge density, differently from scalars. We study various aspects of finite density QED in a homogeneous magnetic background. We compute the free energy density, non-perturbatively in the electromagnetic coupling and the external magnetic field, obtaining the finite density generalization of classic results of Euler--Heisenberg and Schwinger. We also obtain analytically the magnetic susceptibility of a relativistic Fermi gas at finite density, reproducing the de Haas--van Alphen effect. Finally, we consider a (generalized) Gross--Neveu model for $N$ interacting fermions at finite density. We compute its non-perturbative effective potential in the large-$N$ limit, and discuss the fate of the ${\rm U}(1)$ vector and $\mathbb{Z}_2^A$ axial symmetries.

Interplay between the weak-coupling results and the lattice data in dense QCD

Abstract:We discuss the interplay between two first-principles calculations of QCD at high density: perturbative results in the weak-coupling regime and the recent lattice-QCD result at finite isospin density. By comparing these two results, we verify empirically that the weak-coupling calculations of the bulk thermodynamics and the gap parameter for Cooper pairing between quarks can be applicable down to the quark chemical potential $\mu \sim 1$ GeV. Having verified the validity of the weak-coupling results in QCD at finite isospin density, we discuss possible effects on QCD at finite baryon density, which is relevant for the application to realistic environments such as neutron stars, by using the fact that QCD at finite baryon and isospin density have the common weak-coupling expansions. First, we show the size of the color-superconducting gap at finite baryon density is as small as a few MeV at $\mu = 1$ GeV, which implies that the color-flavor locked phase may be unstable against unpairing up to $\mu \sim 1.4$ GeV even in the weak-coupling regime. We also introduce a prescription to reduce the ambiguity arising from the undetermined renormalization scale in the weak-coupling calculation by matching with the lattice-QCD data. We demonstrate the effect of such reduction on neutron-star phenomenology by performing the Bayesian analysis.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in new lattice fermion formulations. We focus on the following three types which have possibility of improving lattice simulations. (1) Flavored-mass fermions are a generalization of Wilson fermions with species-splitting mass terms. In particular, staggered-Wilson fermions initiated by Adams have possibilities of reducing numerical costs in overlap fermions and the influence of taste-breaking in staggered fermions. (2) Central-branch Wilson fermions, in which additive mass renormalization is forbidden by extra axial symmetry, could enable us to perform Wilson-fermion lattice QCD without fine-tuning. (3) Minimally doubled fermions, which reduce the number of species by species-dependent chemical potential terms, realizes a ultra-local chiral fermion at the price of hypercubic symmetry. These setups reveal unknown aspects of lattice fermions, and we obtain a deeper understanding of lattice field theory.

Finite isospin density probe for conformality

Abstract:A new method of employing an isospin chemical potential for QCD-like theories with different number of colors, number of fermion flavors, and in different fermion representations is proposed. The isospin chemical potential, which can be simulated on the lattice due to its positive definite determinant gives a means to probe both confining theories and IR conformal theories without adjusting the lattice spacing and size. As the quark mass is reduced, the isospin chemical potential provides an avenue to extract the chiral condensate in confining theories through the resulting pseudoscalar condensate. For IR conformal theories, the mass anomalous dimension can be extracted in the conformal window through "finite density" scaling since the isospin chemical potential is coupled to a conserved current. In both of these approaches, the isospin chemical potential can be continuously varied for each ensemble at comparable costs while maintaining the hierarchy between the lattice size and lattice spacing. In addition to exploring these methods, finite volume and lattice spacing effects are investigated.

Improved Dirichlet boundary conditions for lattice gauge-fermion theories

Abstract:Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) simulations of lattice gauge theories with fermionic matter rely on the invertibility of the lattice Dirac operator. Near-zero modes of the latter can therefore significantly slow down the update algorithm and cause instabilities. This is in particular a problem when dealing with massless fermions. Homogeneous temporal Dirichlet boundary conditions can be used to remove zero modes from massless lattice Dirac operators, but the standard implementation of these boundary conditions can cause severe finite-volume cutoff effects in regions of parameter space where the physics at the ultraviolet (UV) cutoff scale is dominated by the fermionic instead of the gauge action. In lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) this is usually not an issue, as the gauge action dominates the UV physics and the problem does not show up. In studies of beyond standard model (BSM) theories, on the other hand, the finite-volume artifacts can be severe. We have identified the origin of these IR cutoff effects and propose a simple improvement on the homogeneous temporal Dirichlet boundary conditions to prevent them. We demonstrate the benefits of using our improved boundary conditions at the example of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with $N_f=24$ massless Wilson-clover flavors. Due to the large number of fermions in this theory, the boundary-related finite volume artifacts are particularly strong, and the effect from switching from the normal to our improved homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions is therefore distinct.

Anatomy of finite-volume effect on hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to muon g-2

Abstract:Low-energy spectrum relevant to the lattice calculation of hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to muon anomalous magnetic moment a_\mu is dominantly given by two-pion states satisfying Lüscher's finite-volume quantization condition. Finite-volume effects from those states may exhibit power-law dependence on the volume, contrary to an exponential suppression as suggested by chiral effective theory. Employing the finite-volume state decomposition of Euclidean correlators, we systematically investigate the volume dependence. Phenomenological inputs are used for \pi\pi phase shift and time-like pion form factor. Our estimate for the finite-volume effects on a_\mu is larger than previous works and has a different volume scaling. Numerical results are given for the ``window'' observables of a_\mu.

QCD Functional Integrals for Systems with Nonzero Chemical Potential

Abstract:This paper reviews some recent progress on QCD functional integrals at nonzero chemical potentials. One issue discussed is the use of QCD inequalities for this regime. In particular, the positivity of the integrand of particular Euclidean space functional integrals for two-flavor QCD with degenerate quark masses is used to demonstrate that the free energy per unit volume for QCD with a baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$ (and zero isospin chemical potential) is necessarily greater than the free energy with isospin chemical potential $\mu_I = \frac{2 \mu_B}{N_c} $ (and zero baryon chemical potential). This result may be of use in model finite density systems. A corollary to this result is a rigorous {\it ab initio} bound on the nucleon mass. The second major issue addressed is the so-called ``Silver Blaze'' problem: the fact that at zero temperature and chemical potentials less than some critical value the free energy remains as that of the vacuum. This is puzzling in the context of a functional integral since a chemical potential affects the functional determinant of the Dirac operator and any nonzero $\mu$ changes every eigenvalue of the Dirac operator compared to the $\mu=0$ value. The isospin Silver Blaze problem is solved through the study of the spectrum of the operator $\gamma_0 (\dslash + m)$. The status of the baryon Silver Blaze problem is briefly discussed.

Gauge Systems with Finite Chemical Potential in 2+1 Dimensions by Bosonization

Abstract:We present a bosonization method to study generic low energy behavior of gauge systems with finite chemical potential in 2+1 dimensions. Benefit from the existence of gap (e.g. Gribov gap) in gauge systems at low energy, the fermion fields can be explicitly bosonized by new gauge fields. When chemical potential of the gauge systems is introduced, we find that topological terms (such as Chern-Simons term in 2+1D) as constraints inevitably emerge at low energy. The fermion sign problem at finite chemical potential and its deep connection to the Chern-Simons theories are discussed. The Wilson's criteria of confinement in pure gauge theories is generalized to finite chemical potential case. The chemical potential dependence of physical quantities at strong coupling are explicitly calculated, including the expectation value of the Wilson loop, the confining potential and the confined/deconfined transition temperature. The bosonization puts discussions on chiral symmetry breaking and confined/deconfined transition on an equal footing, so it is suitable for the study of the subtle interplay between them. We find that the chiral symmetry breaking is a necessary (not sufficient) condition for the confinement in 2+1D, and argue that the confined/deconfined phases are not characterized by any local symmetries but distinguished by their non-local topologies. The low energy modes of the strongly coupled gauge systems in a non-symmetry breaking phase is also discussed. The results of the paper can be widely applied to real strongly coupled gauge systems, e.g. high-temperature superconductor and quantum chromodynamical systems in 2+1 dimensions.

Quark Density in Lattice QC$_2$D at Imaginary and Real Chemical Potential

Abstract:We study lattice two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) with two flavors of staggered fermions at imaginary and real quark chemical potential $\mu_q$ and $T>T_c$. We employ various methods of extrapolation of the quark number density from imaginary to real quark chemical potentials $\mu_q$, including series expansions as well as analytic continuation based on phenomenological models, and study their accuracy by comparing the results to the lattice data. Below the Roberge-Weiss temperature, $T<T_{RW}$, we find that the cluster expansion model provides an accurate analytic continuation of the baryon number density in the studied range of chemical potentials. On the other hand, the behavior of the reconstructed canonical partition functions indicates that the available models may require corrections at high quark densities. At $T>T_{RW}$ we show that the analytic continuation to the real values of $\mu_q$ based on trigonometric functions works equally well with the conventional method based on the Taylor expansion in powers of $\mu_q$.

Finite-volume effects in baryon number fluctuations around the QCD critical endpoint

Abstract:We present results for the volume dependence of baryon number fluctuations in the vicinity of the (conjectured) critical endpoint of QCD. They are extracted from the nonperturbative quark propagator that is obtained as a solution to a set of truncated Dyson--Schwinger equations of ($2 + 1$)-flavor QCD in Landau gauge, which takes the backcoupling of quarks onto the Yang--Mills sector explicitly into account. This well-studied system predicts a critical endpoint at moderate temperatures and rather large chemical potential. We investigate this system at small and intermediate finite, three-dimensional, cubic volumes and study the resulting impact on baryon number fluctuations and ratios thereof up to fourth order in the region of the critical endpoint. Due to the limitations of our truncation, the results are quantitatively meaningful only outside the critical scaling region of the endpoint. We find that the fluctuations are visibly affected by the finite volume, particularly for antiperiodic boundary conditions, whereas their ratios are practically invariant.

Within this approach, the available 4-flavor lattice equation of state is extended to finite baryon density, and implications for cold, charge-neutral deconfined matter in beta-equilibrium in compact stars are considered.
Towards charm physics with stabilised Wilson fermions

Abstract:We report on a first study towards the use of stabilised Wilson fermions in heavy flavour physics. In particular, we are interested in fixing the charm quark mass via various physical observables and to inspect cut-off effects arising from different choices. This is done on large-volume OpenLat ensembles with periodic boundary conditions. Two different ways of fixing the charm quark mass are explored, namely using the mass of the $D$- and $\eta_{\rm c}$-meson as physical inputs. We furthermore give an update on our determination of the non-singlet axial current improvement coefficient $c_{\rm A}$.

Flattening of the quantum effective potential in fermionic theories

Abstract:We present methods to constrain fermionic condensates on the level of the path integral, which grant access to the quantum effective potential in the infinite volume limit. In the case of a spontaneously broken symmetry, this potential possesses a manifestly flat region, which is inaccessible to the standard approach on the lattice. However, by constraining the appropriate order parameters such as the chiral condensate, one is then able to probe the flat region. We demonstrate our method of constraining fermionic condensates in the 2-dimensional Gross-Neveu model, which exhibits a spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. We show how the potential flattens for increasing volume and that the flat region is dominated by inhomogeneous field configurations.

Fermi Liquid near a q=0 Charge Quantum Critical Point

Abstract:We analyze the quasiparticle interaction function (the fully dressed and antisymmetrized interaction between fermions) for a two-dimensional Fermi liquid at zero temperature close to a q=0 charge quantum critical point (QCP) in the $s-$wave channel. By the Ward identities, this vertex function must be related to quasiparticle residue $Z$, which can be obtained independently from the fermionic self-energy. We show that to satisfy these Ward identities, one needs to go beyond the standard diagrammatic formulation of Fermi liquid theory and include series of additional contributions to the vertex function. These contributions are forbidden in a conventional Fermi liquid, but do emerge near a QCP, where the effective 4-fermion interaction is mediated by a soft dynamical boson. We demonstrate explicitly that including these terms restores the Ward identity. We also discuss the role of Aslamazov-Larkin-type diagrams for the vertex function. Our analysis is built on works on the vertex function near an antiferromagnetic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 89, 045108 (2014)] and a d-wave charge-nematic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045110 (2010)]. We show that for $s-$wave charge QCP (the one leading to phase separation), the analysis is more straightforward. We also discuss the structure of the Landau function in a critical Fermi liquid near a QCP.

Abstract:To investigate the finite-volume effects on the chiral symmetry restoration and the deconfinement transition for a quantum chromodynamics (QCD) system with [Formula: see text] (two quark flavors), we apply the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model by introducing a chiral chemical potential [Formula: see text] artificially. The final numerical results indicate that the introduced chiral chemical potential does not change the critical exponents, but shifts the location of critical end point (CEP) significantly; the ratios for the chiral chemical potentials and temperatures at CEP, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], are significantly affected by the system size [Formula: see text]. The behavior is that [Formula: see text] increases slowly with [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text] is “large” and [Formula: see text] decreases first and then increases with [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text] is “small.” It is also found that for a fixed [Formula: see text], there is a [Formula: see text], where the critical end point vanishes and the whole phase diagram becomes a crossover when [Formula: see text]. Therefore, we suggest that for the heavy-ion collision experiments, which is to study the possible location of CEP, the finite-volume behavior should be taken into account.

Abstract:The effects of a finite system volume on thermodynamic quantities, such as the pressure, energy density, specific heat, speed of sound, conserved charge susceptibilities and correlations, in hot and dense strongly interacting matter are studied within the parity-doublet Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model. Such an investigation is motivated by relativistic heavy-ion collisions, which create a blob of hot QCD matter of a finite volume, consisting of strongly interacting hadrons and potentially deconfined quarks and gluons. The effect of the finite volume of the system is incorporated by introducing a lower momentum cut-offs in the momentum integrals appearing in the model, the numerical value of the momentum cut-off being related to the de Broglie wavelength of the given particle species. It is found that some of these quantities show a significant volume dependence, in particular those sensitive to pion degrees of freedom, and the crossover transition is generally observed to become smoother in finite volume. These findings are relevant for the effective equation of state used in fluid dynamical simulations of heavy-ion collisions and efforts to extract the freeze out properties of heavy-ion collisions with susceptibilities involving electric charge and strangeness.

Abstract:One important role of antisense RNA expression in mammalian cell biology is to partially suppress the functions of target genes of which the functions are unknown but which are indispensable for host cell growth. Therefore, we applied a dicistronic mRNA expression vector to express antisense p53 RNA in mouse fibrosarcoma MethA cells. We also established several clones in which the p53 gene functions were partially suppressed by the introduced antisense RNA. Compared with the control MethA clones, the contents of p53 protein in those expressing the antisense RNA were about halved, and their growth rates were remarkably decreased. These results proved that an antisense RNA in a dicistronic mRNA construct decreases the cellular content of a targeted gene product and that clones harboring the dicistronic mRNA construct can be established in which expression levels of the introduced antisense RNA are controlled by the stringency of drug selection.
