Abstract:It is a frequent assumption that - via superluminal information transfers - superluminal signals capable of enabling communication are necessarily exchanged in any quantum theory that posits hidden superluminal influences. However, does the presence of hidden superluminal influences automatically imply superluminal signalling and communication? The non-signalling theorem mediates the apparent conflict between quantum mechanics and the theory of special relativity. However, as a 'no-go' theorem there exist two opposing interpretations of the non-signalling constraint: foundational and operational. Concerning Bell's theorem, we argue that Bell employed both interpretations at different times. Bell finally pursued an explicitly operational position on non-signalling which is often associated with ontological quantum theory, e.g., de Broglie-Bohm theory. This position we refer to as "effective non-signalling". By contrast, associated with orthodox quantum mechanics is the foundational position referred to here as "axiomatic non-signalling". In search of a decisive communication-theoretic criterion for differentiating between "axiomatic" and "effective" non-signalling, we employ the operational framework offered by Shannon's mathematical theory of communication. We find that an effective non-signalling theorem represents two sub-theorems, which we call (1) non-transfer-control (NTC) theorem, and (2) non-signification-control (NSC) theorem. Employing NTC and NSC theorems, we report that effective, instead of axiomatic, non-signalling is entirely sufficient for prohibiting nonlocal communication. An effective non-signalling theorem allows for nonlocal quantum information transfer yet - at the same time - effectively denies superluminal signalling and communication.

Abstract:This is an analysis of some aspects of an old but still controversial topic, superluminal quantum tunneling. Some features of quantum tunneling described in literature, such as definition of the tunneling time and a frequency range of a signal, are discussed. The argument is presented that claim of superluminal signaling allegedly observed in frustrated internal reflection experiment was based on the wrong interpretation of the tunneling process. A thought experiment similar to that in the Tolman paradox is discussed. It shows that a new factor, attenuation, comes in the interplay between tunneled signals and macroscopic causality.

Abstract:A recently proposed gedankenexperiment involving the (gravitational or electromagnetic) interaction between two objects--one placed in a state of quantum superposition of two locations--seems to allow for faster-than-light communication. However, it has been argued that, if the mediating fields are endowed with quantum properties, then the possibility for superluminal signaling is fully avoided. Moreover, in the gravitational case, this conclusion has been used to argue for the view that the gravitational field must be quantized. In this work, we clarify and complement some aspects of the discussion. In particular, by focusing on the way in which entanglement spreads across the components of the system, we offer some insights into the fundamental quantum features behind the impossibility of superluminal signaling and we provide a more general proof of such an impossibility in this and related protocols.

Information-processing in theories constrained by no superluminal causation vs no superluminal signalling

Abstract:Relativistic causality principles constrain information processing possibilities in space-time. No superluminal causation (NSC) and no superluminal signaling (NSS) are two such principles which, although related, are distinct. In this work we study the consequence of these principles by considering the tasks of generating non-classical correlations within two space-time configurations. Considering theories constrained by NSC, we show that the first task is impossible in any classical theory and the second is impossible in any (possibly non-classical) theory. However, we construct a protocol enabling non-classical correlations to be generated in both configurations in a theory restricted by the weaker NSS principle. To do so we exploit theories that allow an effect called jamming. In our realisation, non-communicating agents sharing classical resources and assisted by jamming, can generate PR-box correlations. Using this protocol the violation of NSC without violating NSS would be verifiable. We discuss the implications of these findings for the speed of generation of non-classical correlations. Our work offers insights into the differences in information processing power of theories constrained by NSC, NSS and other relativistic causality principles.

Abstract:The Tolman paradox is well known as a base for demonstrating the causality violation by faster-than-light signals within special relativity. It is constructed using a two-way exchange of faster-than-light signals between two inertial observers who are in a relative motion receding one from another. Recently a one-way superluminal signalling arrangement was suggested as a possible construction of a causal paradox. In this note we show that this suggestion is not correct, and no causality principle violation can occur in any one-way signalling by the use of faster-than-light particles and signals.

Abstract:We analyze the possible implication of the existence of superluminal signaling for space-time structure. A new space-time transformation for superluminal signaling is presented based on the superluminal synchrony method. We argue that Lorentz transformation should be replaced by the new transformation in case of the existence of superluminal signaling. Furthermore, we discuss the possible existence of absolute frame, and give a possible practical method to probe it.

Abstract:For over 7 decades it has been debated as to whether nonlocality is strictly of an uncontrollable nature. Based upon polarization measurements with entangled photons, it has been revealed that nonlocality cannot be used to achieve controllable superluminal communication. A simple series of experiments is proposed which may reveal that a rudimentary form of controllable superluminal communication is possible, using human neural stem cells mounted on microelectrode arrays, subject to laser stimulation at varying Hz levels.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a model with extra dimensions formulated in Csaki et al. (Phys Rev D 62, 045015), which fatefully reproduces Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) equations on the brane, allows for an apparent superluminal propagation of massless signals. Namely, a massive brane curves the spacetime and affects the trajectory of a signal in a way that allows a signal sent from the brane through the bulk to arrive (upon returning) to a distant point on the brane faster than the light can propagate along the brane. In particular, the signal sent along the brane suffers a greater gravitational time delay than the bulk signal due to the presence of matter on the brane. While the bulk signal never moves with the speed greater than the speed of light in its own locality, this effect still enables one to send signals faster than light from the brane observer's perspective. For example, this effect might be used to resolve the cosmological horizon problem. In addition, one of the striking observational signatures would be arrival of the same gravitational wave signal at two different times, where the first signals arrives before its electromagnetic counterpart. We used GW170104 gravitational wave event to impose a strong limit on the model with extra dimensions in question.

Abstract:Causality is fundamental to science, but it appears in several different forms. One is relativistic causality, which is tied to a space-time structure and forbids signalling outside the future. A second is an operational notion of causation that considers the flow of information between physical systems and interventions on them. In [Vilasini and Colbeck, Phys. Rev. A. 106, 032204 (2022)], we propose a framework for characterising when a causal model can coexist with relativistic principles such as no superluminal signalling, while allowing for cyclic and non-classical causal influences and the possibility of causation without signalling. In a theory without superluminal causation, both superluminal signalling and causal loops are not possible in Minkowski space-time. Here we demonstrate that if we only forbid superluminal signalling, superluminal causation remains possible and show the mathematical possibility of causal loops that can be embedded in a Minkowski space-time without leading to superluminal signalling. The existence of such loops in the given space-time could in principle be operationally verified using interventions. This establishes that the physical principle of no superluminal signalling is not by itself sufficient to rule out causal loops between Minkowski space-time events. Interestingly, the conditions required to rule out causal loops in a space-time depend on the dimension. Whether such loops are possible in three spatial dimensions remains an important open question.

Abstract:The no-cloning theorem states that an unknown quantum state cannot be cloned exactly and deterministically due to the linearity of quantum mechanics. Associated with this theorem is the quantitative no-cloning limit that sets an upper bound to the quality of the generated clones. However, this limit can be circumvented by abandoning determinism and using probabilistic methods. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of probabilistic cloning of arbitrary coherent states that clearly surpasses the no-cloning limit. Our scheme is based on a hybrid linear amplifier that combines an ideal deterministic linear amplifier with a heralded measurement-based noiseless amplifier. We demonstrate the production of up to five clones with the fidelity of each clone clearly exceeding the corresponding no-cloning limit. Moreover, since successful cloning events are heralded, our scheme has the potential to be adopted in quantum repeater, teleportation and computing applications.

Abstract:It is known that the stronger no-cloning theorem and the no-deleting theorem taken together provide the permanence property of quantum information. Also, it is known that the violation of the no-deletion theorem would imply signalling. Here, we show that the violation of the stronger no-cloning theorem could lead to signalling. Furthermore, we prove the stronger no-cloning theorem from the conservation of quantum information. These observations imply that the permanence property of quantum information is connected to the no-signalling and the conservation of quantum information.

Abstract:Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering allows two parties to verify their entanglement, even if one party's measurements are untrusted. This concept has not only provided new insights into the nature of non-local spatial correlations in quantum mechanics, but also serves as a resource for one-sided device-independent quantum information tasks. Here, we investigate how EPR steering behaves when one-half of a maximally-entangled pair of qudits (multidimensional quantum systems) is cloned by a universal cloning machine. We find that EPR steering, as verified by a criterion based on the mutual information between qudits, can only be found in one of the copy subsystems but not both. We prove that this is also true for the single-system analogue of EPR steering. We find that this restriction, which we term "no-cloning of quantum steering", elucidates the physical reason why steering can be used to secure sources and channels against cloning-based attacks when implementing quantum communication and quantum computation protocols.

A causal modelling analysis of Bell scenarios in space-time: implications of jamming non-local correlations for relativistic causality principles

Abstract:Bell scenarios involve space-like separated measurements made by multiple parties. The standard no-signalling constraints ensure that such parties cannot signal superluminally by choosing their measurement settings. In tripartite Bell scenarios, relaxed non-signalling constraints have been proposed, which permit a class of post-quantum theories known as jamming non-local theories. To analyse whether no superluminal signalling continues to hold in these theories and, more generally, the role of non-signalling constraints in preserving relativistic causality principles, we apply a framework that we have recently developed for defining information-theoretic causal models in non-classical theories and their compatibility with relativistic causality in a space-time. We show that any theory that generates jamming correlations in a Bell scenario between space-like separated parties must necessarily do so through causal fine-tuning and by means of superluminal causal influences. Moreover, within our framework, we show that jamming theories can also lead to superluminal signalling (contrary to previous claims) unless it is ensured that certain systems are fundamentally inaccessible to agents and their interventions. Finally, we analyse relativistic causality in Bell scenarios showing that no-signalling constraints on correlations are generally insufficient for ruling out superluminal signalling when general interventions are also allowed. In this way, we identify necessary and sufficient conditions for ruling out superluminal signalling in Bell scenarios, and demonstrate through examples that the non-signalling constraints on correlations are neither necessary nor sufficient for ruling out causal loops. These results solidify our understanding of relativistic causality principles in information processing tasks in space-time, involving classical, quantum or post-quantum resources.

Abstract:It recently has been demonstrated that signals conveyed by evanescent modes can travel faster than light. In this report some special features of signals are introduced and investigated, for instance the fundamental property that signals are frequency band limited. Evanescent modes are characterized by extraordinary properties: Their energy is {\it negative}, they are not directly measurable, and the evanescent region is not causal since the modes traverse this region instantaneously. The study demonstrates the necessity of quantum mechanical principles in order to interprete the superluminal signal velocity of classical evanescent modes.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a result precisely analogous to the traditional quantum no-cloning theorem holds in classical mechanics. This classical no-cloning theorem does not prohibit classical cloning, we argue, because it is based on a too-restrictive definition of cloning. Using a less popular, more inclusive definition of cloning, we give examples of classical cloning processes. We also prove that a cloning machine must be at least as complicated as the object it is supposed to clone.
