Abstract:It has been advocated by Bell and Bohm that the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlations are mediated through faster-than-light (FTL) interactions. In a previous paper a way to avoid causal paradoxes derived from this FTL hypothesis (via the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry) has been suggested. Lorentz transformations would remain valid, but there would be no equivalence between active and passive Lorentz transformations in the case of EPR correlations. Some counterintuitive consequences of this assumption are briefly examined here.

Abstract:In science, one observes correlations and invents theoretical models that describe them. In all sciences, besides quantum physics, all correlations are described by either of two mechanisms. Either a first event influences a second one by sending some information encoded in bosons or molecules or other physical carriers, depending on the particular science. Or the correlated events have some common causes in their common past. Interestingly, quantum physics predicts an entirely different kind of cause for some correlations, named entanglement. This new kind of cause reveals itself, e.g., in correlations that violate Bell inequalities (hence cannot be described by common causes) between space-like separated events (hence cannot be described by classical communication). Einstein branded it as spooky action at a distance. A real spooky action at a distance would require a faster than light influence defined in some hypothetical universally privileged reference frame. Here we put stringent experimental bounds on the speed of all such hypothetical influences. We performed a Bell test during more than 24 hours between two villages separated by 18 km and approximately east-west oriented, with the source located precisely in the middle. We continuously observed 2-photon interferences well above the Bell inequality threshold. Taking advantage of the Earth's rotation, the configuration of our experiment allowed us to determine, for any hypothetically privileged frame, a lower bound for the speed of this spooky influence. For instance, if such a privileged reference frame exists and is such that the Earth's speed in this frame is less than 10^-3 that of the speed of light, then the speed of this spooky influence would have to exceed that of light by at least 4 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:A recently proposed gedankenexperiment involving the (gravitational or electromagnetic) interaction between two objects--one placed in a state of quantum superposition of two locations--seems to allow for faster-than-light communication. However, it has been argued that, if the mediating fields are endowed with quantum properties, then the possibility for superluminal signaling is fully avoided. Moreover, in the gravitational case, this conclusion has been used to argue for the view that the gravitational field must be quantized. In this work, we clarify and complement some aspects of the discussion. In particular, by focusing on the way in which entanglement spreads across the components of the system, we offer some insights into the fundamental quantum features behind the impossibility of superluminal signaling and we provide a more general proof of such an impossibility in this and related protocols.

Abstract:Correlations are generally described by one of two mechanisms: either a first event influences a second one by sending information encoded in bosons or other physical carriers, or the correlated events have some common causes in their shared history. Many Bell tests have been performed, and loopholes related to locality and detection have been closed in several independent experiments. Demonstration that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering requires more than one bit of faster-than-light information transmission

Abstract: Schr\"odinger held that a local quantum system has some objectively real quantum state and no other (hidden) properties. He therefore took the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) phenomenon, which he generalized and called `steering', to require nonlocal wavefunction collapse. Because this would entail faster-than-light (FTL) information transmission, he doubted that it would be seen experimentally. Here we report a demonstration of EPR steering with entangled photon pairs that puts--in Schr\"odinger's interpretation--a non-zero lower bound on the amount of FTL information transmission. We develop a family of $n$-setting loss-tolerant EPR-steering inequalities allowing for a size-$d$ classical message sent from Alice's laboratory to Bob's. For the case $n=3$ and $d=2$ (one bit) we observe a statistically significant violation. Our experiment closes the efficiency and locality loopholes, and we address the freedom-of-choice loophole by using quantum random number generators to independently choose Alice's and Bob's measurement basis settings. To close the efficiency and locality loopholes simultaneously, we introduce methods for quickly switching between three mutually unbiased measurement bases and for accurately characterizing the efficiency of detectors. From the space-time arrangement of our experiment, we can conclude that if the mechanism for the observed bipartite correlations is that Alice's measurement induces wave-function collapse of Bob's particle, then more than one bit of information must travel from Alice to Bob at more than three times the speed of light.

Abstract:The Tolman paradox is well known as a base for demonstrating the causality violation by faster-than-light signals within special relativity. It is constructed using a two-way exchange of faster-than-light signals between two inertial observers who are in a relative motion receding one from another. Recently a one-way superluminal signalling arrangement was suggested as a possible construction of a causal paradox. In this note we show that this suggestion is not correct, and no causality principle violation can occur in any one-way signalling by the use of faster-than-light particles and signals.

Abstract:In Physics, causality is a fundamental postulation arising from the second law of thermodynamics. It states that, the cause of an event precedes its effect. In the context of Electromagnetics, the relativistic causality limits the upper bound of the velocity of information, which is carried by electromagnetic wave packets, to the speed of light in free space (c). In anomalously dispersive media (ADM), it has been shown that, wave packets appear to propagate with a superluminal or even negative group velocity. However, Sommerfeld and Brillouin pointed out that the "front" of such wave packets, known as the initial point of the Sommerfeld precursor, always travels at c. In this work, we investigate the negative-group-velocity transmission of half-sine wave packets. We experimentally observe the wave front and the distortion of modulated wave packets propagating with a negative group velocity in a passive artificial ADM in microwave regime. Different from previous literature on the propagation of superluminal Gaussian packets, strongly distorted sinusoidal packets with non-superluminal wave fronts were observed. This result agrees with Brillouin's assertion, i.e., the severe distortion of seemingly superluminal wave packets makes the definition of group velocity physically meaningless in the anomalously dispersive region.

Abstract:We show experimentally that the effects of "slow and fast light" that are considered to be caused by spectral hole-burning under conditions of coherent population oscillations (CPO) can be universally observed with incoherent light fields on objects with the pure-intensity nonlinearity, when such an interpretation is inapplicable. As a light source, we used an incandescent lamp and as objects for study, a photochromic glass and a thermochromic coating. The response of the objects to intensity modulation of the incident light reproduced in all details the commonly accepted experimental evidences of the "light with a negative group velocity" and "ultraslow light". We come to conclusion that so far there are no experimental works providing evidence for real observation of the "CPO-based slow or fast light".

A coherence interpretation of nonlocal realism in the delayed-choice quantum eraser

Abstract:The delayed-choice thought experiment proposed by Wheeler has been demonstrated over the last several decades for the wave-particle duality of a single photon. The delayed-choice quantum eraser proposed by Scully and Druhl has also been intensively studied for the violation of the cause-effect relation of a single photon as well as a pair of entangled photons in an interferometric system. Here, a coherence interpretation is conducted for the nonlocal realism of the space-like separated photons observed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 1 (2000). As a result, coherence solutions of the observed nonlocal fringes are deterministically derived from coincidence detection-caused selective measurements, where the resulting product-basis superposition becomes the origin of the otherwise quantum mystery of the nonlocal fringes. For this, a fixed sum-phase relation between entangled photons is a prerequisite, which cannot be explained by conventional particle nature-based quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Most working scientists hold fast to the concept of 'realism' - a viewpoint according to which an external reality exists independent of observation. But quantum physics has shattered some of our cornerstone beliefs. According to Bell's theorem, any theory that is based on the joint assumption of realism and locality (meaning that local events cannot be affected by actions in space-like separated regions) is at variance with certain quantum predictions. Experiments with entangled pairs of particles have amply confirmed these quantum predictions, thus rendering local realistic theories untenable. Maintaining realism as a fundamental concept would therefore necessitate the introduction of 'spooky' actions that defy locality. Here we show by both theory and experiment that a broad and rather reasonable class of such non-local realistic theories is incompatible with experimentally observable quantum correlations. In the experiment, we measure previously untested correlations between two entangled photons, and show that these correlations violate an inequality proposed by Leggett for non-local realistic theories. Our result suggests that giving up the concept of locality is not sufficient to be consistent with quantum experiments, unless certain intuitive features of realism are abandoned.

Information transfer by entangled photons without auxiliary non-quantum channel

Abstract:In this paper we present a theoretical analysis of the faster than light communication possibility based on entangled photons. We analyze designs that may be capable to solve the problem of direct information transfer between members of an entangled photon pairs. We consider that experimental verifications can confirm or even refute this. Our hypothesis was that most proofs of the nocommunication theorem are based on a certain set of conditions, and it is possible to provide a broader set of conditions that allow the establishment of entangled states as quantum information channels, without using a classical channel. One basic unit of the proposed design transforms the polarization state of one member of an entangled photon pair into a spatial superposition state. Thus, after the polarization measurement performed on one member, which eliminates the entanglement, the quantum information is maintained in the spatial superposition state of the other member. This can be recovered by a particular measurement based on spatial interference. We have shown that solutions with so-called symmetric functions lead to average results that corresponds to the nocommunication theorem. However, using asymmetric functions the averaged measurement results calculated in a prescribed time window can distinguish the types of measurements performed on the other member of the pair. This can establish a communication code that enables faster-than-light information sharing under specific conditions. There may be also further theoretical consequences: a significant extension of the quantum mechanical nonlocality principle.

Abstract:For over 7 decades it has been debated as to whether nonlocality is strictly of an uncontrollable nature. Based upon polarization measurements with entangled photons, it has been revealed that nonlocality cannot be used to achieve controllable superluminal communication. A simple series of experiments is proposed which may reveal that a rudimentary form of controllable superluminal communication is possible, using human neural stem cells mounted on microelectrode arrays, subject to laser stimulation at varying Hz levels.

Abstract:A critical review of experimental studies of the so-called 'slow light' arising due to anomalously high steepness of the refractive index dispersion under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency or coherent population oscillations is presented. It is shown that a considerable amount of experimental evidence for observation of the 'slow light' is not related to the low group velocity of light and can be easily interpreted in terms of a standard model of interaction of light with a saturable absorber.

Abstract:This is an analysis of some aspects of an old but still controversial topic, superluminal quantum tunneling. Some features of quantum tunneling described in literature, such as definition of the tunneling time and a frequency range of a signal, are discussed. The argument is presented that claim of superluminal signaling allegedly observed in frustrated internal reflection experiment was based on the wrong interpretation of the tunneling process. A thought experiment similar to that in the Tolman paradox is discussed. It shows that a new factor, attenuation, comes in the interplay between tunneled signals and macroscopic causality.

Information-processing in theories constrained by no superluminal causation vs no superluminal signalling

Abstract:Relativistic causality principles constrain information processing possibilities in space-time. No superluminal causation (NSC) and no superluminal signaling (NSS) are two such principles which, although related, are distinct. In this work we study the consequence of these principles by considering the tasks of generating non-classical correlations within two space-time configurations. Considering theories constrained by NSC, we show that the first task is impossible in any classical theory and the second is impossible in any (possibly non-classical) theory. However, we construct a protocol enabling non-classical correlations to be generated in both configurations in a theory restricted by the weaker NSS principle. To do so we exploit theories that allow an effect called jamming. In our realisation, non-communicating agents sharing classical resources and assisted by jamming, can generate PR-box correlations. Using this protocol the violation of NSC without violating NSS would be verifiable. We discuss the implications of these findings for the speed of generation of non-classical correlations. Our work offers insights into the differences in information processing power of theories constrained by NSC, NSS and other relativistic causality principles.
