Abstract:Recently, the O(alpha) and O(alpha^3 ln(alpha)) radiative corrections to the orthopositronium lifetime have been presented in closed analytical form, in terms of basic irrational numbers that can be evaluated numerically to arbitrary precision [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 193401 (2008)]. Here, we present the details of this calculation and reveal the nature of these new constants. We also list explicit transformation formulas for generalized polylogarithms of weight four, which may be useful for other applications.

Abstract:We have studied the radiative decay of the 2s state of one-electron and one-muon ions, where the two-photon mechanism plays an important role. Due to the nuclear size corrections the radiative decay of the 2s state in the electron and muon ions is qualitatively different. Based on the accurate relativistic calculation, we introduced a two-parameter approximation, which makes it possible to describe the two-photon angular-differential transition probability for the polarized emitted photons with high accuracy. The emission of photons with linear and circular polarizations was studied separately. We also investigated the transition probabilities for the polarized initial and final states. The investigation was performed for ions with atomic numbers 1 < Z < 120.

Abstract:Positronium annihilation amplitudes that are computed by assuming a factorization approximation with on-shell intermediate leptons, do not exhibit good analytical behavior. We propose an ansatz which allows to include binding energy corrections and obtain the correct analytical and gauge invariance behavior of these QED amplitudes. As a consequence of these non-perturbative corrections, the parapositronium and orthopositronium decay rates receive corrections of order alpha^4 and alpha^2, respectively. These new corrections for orthopositronium are relevant in view of a precise comparison between recent theoretical and experimental developments. Implications are pointed out for analogous decays of quarkonia .

Abstract:The non-relativistic energy levels of ortho-positronium are calculated in the quadrupole and octupole approximations for the interaction potential. For this purpose, the RST eigenvalue problem of angular momentum is illustratively solved for the quantum numbers $\jO=0,1,2,3,4$ and $\bjz=\pm 1$. This eigenvalue problem admits \emph{ambiguous} solutions for $0<|\bjz|<\jO$ whereas the solutions for $\bjz=0$ and $\bjz=\pm \jO$ are \emph{unique}. In order to attain some (at least approximative) solutions of the energy eigenvalue problem one tries a factorized ansatz for the wave function and thus splits off the angular problem (with its ambiguous solutions) from the residual radial problem. The latter does, as usual, finally fix the energy eigenvalues. But it is just by this procedure that the ambiguity of the angular problem is transferred to most of the energy levels which thereby become doubled. The corresponding doubling energy amounts to (roughly) one percent of the total binding energy and is, however, of purely \emph{electric} origin, since magnetism is completely neglected. Indeed, the charge distributions of both positronium constituents (i.e.\ electron and positron) do inherit their ambiguity from the ambiguous solution of the angular eigenvalue problem ($\leadsto$ charge "dimorphism"); and naturally the dimorphic configurations must then possess slightly different interaction energies of the electrostatic type.

Abstract:Higher-order QED radiative corrections to the muon decay spectrum are evaluated within the QED structure function approach in the next-to-leading-order logarithmic approximation. New analytical results are given in the O(α3ln2(mμ2/me2)) order. Earlier results in the O(α2ln1(mμ2/me2)) and O(α3ln3(mμ2/me2)) orders are partially corrected. Abstract:A detection system of the conventional PET tomograph is set-up to record data from e+ e- annihilation into two photons with energy of 511 keV, and it gives information on the density distribution of a radiopharmaceutical in the body of the object. In this paper we explore the possibility of performing the three gamma photons imaging based on ortho-positronium annihilation, as well as the possibility of positronium mean lifetime imaging with the J-PET tomograph constructed from plastic scintillators. For this purposes simulations of the ortho-positronium formation and its annihilation into three photons were performed taking into account distributions of photons' momenta as predicted by the theory of quantum electrodynamics and the response of the J-PET tomograph. In order to test the proposed ortho-positronium lifetime image reconstruction method, we concentrate on the decay of the ortho-positronium into three photons and applications of radiopharmaceuticals labeled with isotopes emitting a prompt gamma quantum. The proposed method of imaging is based on the determination of hit-times and hit-positions of registered photons which enables the reconstruction of the time and position of the annihilation point as well as the lifetime of the ortho-positronium on an event-by-event basis. We have simulated the production of the positronium in a cylindrical phantom composed of a set of different materials in which the ortho-positronium lifetime varied from 2.0 ns to 3.0 ns, as expected for ortho-positronium created in the human body. The presented reconstruction method for total-body J-PET like detector allows to achieve a mean lifetime resolution of about 40 ps. Recent Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy measurements of cancerous and healthy uterine tissues show that this sensitivity may allow to study the morphological changes in cell structures.

Abstract:Magnetic bottle Time-of-Flight (ToF) spectrometers can measure the energy spectra of all electrons emitted into a 2$\pi$ sr solid angle simultaneously, greatly reducing data collection time. When the detection of the annihilation gamma ($\gamma$) and the detection of the electron (e) are used as timing signals for ToF spectrometers, the e-$\gamma$ time difference spectra (e-$\gamma$ TDS) are reflective of the positron-induced electron energy distributions provided the times between the impact of the positrons and the emission of the annihilation gammas are short compared to the flight times of the electrons. This is typically the case since positrons have short lifetime in solids ($\sim$ 100 - 500 ps) compared to the flight times of the secondary electrons ($10^2$ ns to $10^3$ ns). However, if the positron leaves the surface as a positronium atom (a bound electron-positron state), the annihilation gamma photons can be appreciably delayed due to the longer ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetime. This can result in an e-$\gamma$ TDS having an exponential tail with a decay constant related to the o-Ps lifetime. Here, we present an analysis of the e-$\gamma$ TDS using a Monte Carlo model which estimates the spectral contributions resulting from o-Ps annihilations. By removing the contributions from the delayed gamma signal, the energy spectrum of Positron Impact-Induced Secondary electrons (PIISE) can be isolated. Furthermore, our analysis allows an estimation of the intensity of the exponential tail in the e-$\gamma$ TDS providing a method to measure the fraction of positrons that form Ps at solid surfaces without relying on assumed 100% Ps emitting surfaces for calibration.

Abstract:The authors of Ref.[1] (referred to here as "Moskal et al.") claim to have performed the most precise test of P, T and CP invariance in the decay of ortho-Positronium. In this note: 1) we demonstrate, assuming standard properties for Compton scattering, that the average value of the correlation measured by Moskal et al. must necessarily be zero, independently of any physics occurring in o-Ps decay; 2) we point out that there is no formal justification to equate the normal vector to the Compton scattering plane with the incident photon polarization, as done by Moskal et al.; 3) we observe the absence of characterization of the device as a Compton polarimeter, which is paramount in photon polarimetry; 4) we review previous measurements of the polarization of photons from o-Ps decay, properly implementing the Compton polarimetry technique, and make the connection with tests of discrete symmetries; and 5) we stress that the correlation proposed by Moskal et al. cannot be generated solely by the physics of o-Ps decay, including possible violations of discrete symmetries.

The methods employed are well known to be valid for radiatively correcting Breit-Wigner line shapes. Radiative corrections contribute substantially to precision life time measurements of muons and pions when initially stopped in condensed matter.

Abstract:Radiative corrections to the decay rate of n=2 states of hydrogenic ions are calculated. The transitions considered are the M1 decay of the 2s state to the ground state and the E1(M2) decays of the 2p1/2 and 2p3/2 states to the ground state. The radiative corrections start in order α(Zα)2, but the method used sums all orders of Zα. The leading α(Zα)2 correction for the E1 decays is calculated and compared with the exact result. The extension of the calculational method to parity nonconserving transitions in neutral atoms is discussed.

Radiative Corrections to the Muon Polarization in the Semileptonic Decay of a Neutral Kaon

Abstract:A model-independent expression for the Dalitz plot of the semileptonic decays of a neutral kaon $K_{\mu 3}^0$, including radiative corrections to order $\mathcal{O}[(\alpha / \pi )(q/M_1)]$, where $q$ is the four-momentum transfer and $M_1$ is the mass of the decaying kaon, is presented. In this paper the emitted muon is considered to be polarized so the analysis is centered on numerically evaluating the radiative corrections to the longitudinal, transverse, and normal polarization muon components. The model dependence of radiative corrections is kept in general form within this approximation, which is useful for model-independent experimental analyses. The final expressions, with the triple integration of the bremsstrahlung photon variables are ready to be performed numerically. The radiative corrections to the components of the muon polarization are found to be very small compared to their respective uncorrected values.

Abstract:For an accurate theoretical description of muonic bound systems, it is crucial to consistently treat relativistic and recoil corrections to vacuum polarization. The one-loop vacuum-polarization effect is by far the dominant quantum electrodynamic (QED) energy correction for bound muons, being of order $\alpha (Z\alpha)^2 m_r$, where $\alpha$ is the fine-structure constant, $Z$ is the nuclear charge number, and $m_r$ is the reduced mass. Gauge invariance of the relativistic and recoil corrections to vacuum polarization of order $\alpha (Z\alpha)^4 m_r$ is investigated with respect to nonretarded and standard, renormalized variants of Coulomb gauge. The invariance is shown after including three-photon exchange diagrams. Our derivation is based on an adapted form of Nonrelativistic Quantum Electrodynamics for bound muon systems (NRQED$_\mu$), which is a version of NRQED where the hard scale is set at the muon mass instead of the electron mass. Updated values for the gauge-independent corrections for one-muon ions with nuclear charge numbers $Z = 1,2,6$ are presented.

Abstract:In this work, we calculate the decay rates of the OZI-forbidden processes J/psi((sic)) -> pi pi, rho pi at the order of the leading-twist distribution amplitude. The process of J/psi((sic)) -> pi(+)pi(-) violates isospin conservation and the amplitude is explicitly proportional to the isospin violation factor m(u) - m(d), our numerical results on their decay rates are consistent with the data. The process J/psi((sic)) -> rho pi violates the hadronic helicity conservation and should be suppressed, as indicated in literature, its decay rate can only be proportional to m(q)(2) at the order of leading twist. Our theoretical evaluation confirms this statement that the theoretical evaluation on Gamma(J/psi((sic)) -> rho pi) is almost one order smaller than the data unless the model parameters take certain extreme values. It may imply that the sizable branching ratio of J/psi((sic)) -> rho pi should be explained by either higher twist contributions or other mechanisms. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is a novel device being developed at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland based on organic scintillators. J-PET is an axially symmetric (M. Mohammed) has been affiliated to affiliation 6. Please check if correct, otherwise, provide the correct affiliation.and high acceptance scanner that can be used as a multi-purpose detector system. It is well suited to pursue tests of discrete symmetries in decays of positronium in addition to medical imaging. J-PET enables the measurement of both momenta and the polarization vectors of annihilation photons. The latter is a unique feature of the J-PET detector which allows the study of time reversal symmetry violation operator which can be constructed solely from the annihilation photons momenta before and after the scattering in the detector.

Abstract:Discrete symmetries play an important role in particle physics with violation of CP connected to the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe. We report the most precise test of P, T and CP invariance in decays of ortho-positronium, performed with methodology involving polarization of photons from these decays. Positronium, the simplest bound state of an electron and positron, is of recent interest with discrepancies reported between measured hyperfine energy structure and theory at the level of $10^{-4}$ signaling a need for better understanding of the positronium system at this level. We test discrete symmetries using photon polarizations determined via Compton scattering in the dedicated J-PET tomograph on an event-by-event basis and without the need to control the spin of the positronium with an external magnetic field, in contrast to previous experiments. Our result is consistent with QED expectations at the level of 0.0007 and one standard deviation.
