Abstract:The radiative correction to the equation of motion for a moving charged particle is one of the oldest open problems in physics. The problem originates in the emission of radiation by an accelerated charge, which must result in a loss of energy and recoil of the charge, adding a correction to the well-known Lorentz force. When radiation reaction is neglected, it is well known that the dynamics of a charge in an ideal plane-wave field is periodic. Here we investigate the long-time dynamics of a charge in such a field and show that all current models of radiation reaction strictly forbid periodic dynamics. Consequently, we show that under the influence of the external field, the loss of energy to radiation reaction causes particles to accelerate toward an infinite kinetic energy. Such a phenomenon persists even in weak laser fields and puts forward the possibility of testing radiation reaction through long-duration weak-field precision measurements, rather than through strong-field experiments. We further provide numerical examples suggesting realistic conditions for such measurements through the asymptotic frequency shift and energy loss of a charge, which for example can be detected using electron energy spectrometers in ultrafast electron microscopes.

Abstract:Radiative corrections are crucial for modern high-precision physics experiments, and are an area of active research in the experimental and theoretical community. Here we provide an overview of the state of the field of radiative corrections with a focus on several topics: lepton-proton scattering, QED corrections in deep-inelastic scattering, and in radiative light-hadron decays. Particular emphasis is placed on the two-photon exchange, believed to be responsible for the proton form-factor discrepancy, and associated Monte-Carlo codes. We encourage the community to continue developing theoretical techniques to treat radiative corrections, and perform experimental tests of these corrections.

Calculations on Decay Rates of Various Proton Emissions

Abstract:. Proton radioactivity of neutron-deficient nuclei around the dripline has been systematically studied within the deformed density-dependent model. The crucial proton-nucleus potential is constructed via the single-folding integral of the density distribution of daughter nuclei and the effective M3Y nucleon-nucleon interaction or the proton-proton Coulomb interaction. After the decay width is obtained by the modified two-potential approach, the final decay half-lives can be achieved by involving the spectroscopic factors from the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory combined with the BCS method. Moreover, a simple formula along with only one adjusted parameter is tentatively proposed to evaluate the half-lives of proton emitters, where the introduction of nuclear deformation is somewhat discussed as well. It is found that the calculated results are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental values and consistent with other theoretical studies, indicating that the present approach can be applied to the case of proton emission. Predictions on half-lives are made for possible proton emitters, which may be useful for future experiments.

Abstract:The radon radioactivity is an unavoidable background in present and future underground experiments attempting to detect the neutrinoless double β decay, WIMP-nucleus interactions in direct dark-matter searches, etc. In particular, the Rn220,222 radioactive chains lead to β− decays of Pb212,214 and Bi212,214 , notorious backgrounds in the mentioned experiments. In this paper, we compute the total β -electron spectral shapes of these decays by including next-to-leading-order terms and other correction factors in the β spectral shape. The studied β− decays involve strong allowed and first-forbidden β transitions, the nonunique first-forbidden transitions being nuclear-structure dependent through the numerous involved nuclear matrix elements (NMEs). We compute these NMEs by using the nuclear shell model with the khpe Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian renders a very nice description of the level energies of the daughter nuclei Bi212,214 and Po212,214 of the mentioned mother nuclei. We adopt experimental endpoint energies and engage the small relativistic NMEs (sNME), to accurately describe the measured branching ratios, a necessary prerequisite for a precise description of the total β spectra. We also discuss the uncertainties of our computed spectra and hope that these computations will be of help for present and future rare-decays and dark-matter experiments. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.014326 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Radiating a photon from the initial state provides a useful tool for studying a range of low energy physics using a high-energy e+ e- accelerator. Accurate results require careful calculation of the first order virtual photon corrections. We compare exact results for initial state radiative corrections, finding agreement to an order of 10^{-5} or better as a fraction of the Born cross-section for most of the range of photon energies, at CMS energies relevant in both high-energy collision and radiative return experiments.

Abstract:It is well known that the traditional treatment of radiative corrections that utilizes the "true" neutrino momentum p⃗ν in the differential decay rate formula could lead to a ∼α/π systematic error in certain observables due to the mistreatment of 4-body kinematics. I investigate the theory structure of one of the proposed solutions, the " ν′ -formalism", in the nonrecoil limit appropriate for neutron and nuclear β decays. I derive an elegant master formula for the 4-body phase space and use it to reanalyze the spectrum-dependent "outer" radiative corrections to the β decay of a polarized spin-half nucleus; a complete set of analytic expressions is provided for readers to straightforwardly obtain the final numerical results. Abstract:Nowadays quantum-mechanical theory allows one to reliably calculate the processes of 2p radioactivity (true three-body decays) and the corresponding energy and angular correlations up to distances of the order of 1000 fm. However, the precision of modern experiments has now become sufficient to indicate some deficiency of the predicted theoretical distributions. In this paper we discuss the extrapolation along the classical trajectories as a method to improve the convergence of the theoretical energy and angular correlations at very large distances (of the order of atomic distances), where only the long-range Coulomb forces are still operating. The precision of this approach is demonstrated using the "exactly" solvable semianalytical models with simplified three-body Hamiltonians. It is also demonstrated that for heavy 2p emitters, the 2p decay momentum distributions can be sensitive to the effect of the screening by atomic electrons. We compare theoretical results with available experimental data.

Abstract:We study radiative corrections to low-energy charged-current processes involving nucleons, such as neutron beta decay and (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering within a top-down effective-field-theory approach. We first match the Standard Model to the low-energy effective theory valid below the weak scale and, using renormalization group equations with anomalous dimensions of $\mathcal{O}(\alpha, \alpha \alpha_s, \alpha^2)$, evolve the resulting effective coupling down to the hadronic scale. Here, we first match to heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory and subsequently, below the pion-mass scale, to a pionless effective theory, evolving the effective vector coupling with anomalous dimensions of $\mathcal{O}(\alpha, \alpha^2)$ all the way down to the scale of the electron mass, relevant for beta decays. We thus provide a new evaluation of the ``inner" radiative corrections to the vector coupling constant and to the neutron decay rate, discussing differences with the previous literature. Using our new result for the radiative corrections, we update the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ud}$ from the neutron decay.

Abstract:Radiative corrections to the annihilation of proton--antiproton into electron--positron are revisited, including virtual and real (soft and hard) photon emission. This issue is relevant for the time-like form factors measurements planned at the PANDA experiment at the FAIR facility, in next future. The relevant formulas are given. A stand-alone Monte-Carlo integrator is developed on the basis of the calculated radiative cross section and its application to the PANDA experiment is illustrated.

Abstract:High-energy muons can travel large thicknesses of matter. For underground neutrino and cosmic ray detectors the energy loss of muons has to be known accurately for simulations. In this article the next-to-leading order correction to the average energy loss of muons through bremsstrahlung is calculated using a modified Weizsäcker–Williams method. An analytical parametrisation of the numerical results is given.

Calculations of widths in the problem of decay by proton emission

Abstract:We develop a new fully quantum method for determination of widths for nuclear decay by proton emission where multiple internal reflections of wave packet describing tunneling process inside proton--nucleus radial barrier are taken into account. Exact solutions for amplitudes of wave function, penetrability $T$ and reflection $R$ are found for $n$-step barrier (at arbitrary $n$) which approximates the realistic barrier. In contrast to semiclassical approach and two-potential approach, we establish by this method essential dependence of the penetrability on the starting point $R_{\rm form}$ in the internal well where proton starts to move outside (for example, for $^{157}_{73}{\rm Ta}$ the penetrability is changed up to 200 times; accuracy is $|T+R-1| < 1.5 \cdot 10^{-15}$). We impose a new condition: in the beginning of the proton decay the proton starts to move outside from minimum of the well. Such a condition provides minimal calculated half-life and gives stable basis for predictions. However, the half-lives calculated by such an approach turn out to be a little closer to experimental data in comparison with the semiclassical half-lives. Estimated influence of the external barrier region is up to 1.5 times for changed penetrability.

Abstract:A linear universal decay formula is presented starting from the microscopic mechanism of the charged-particle emission. It relates the half-lives of monopole radioactive decays with the Q values of the outgoing particles as well as the masses and charges of the nuclei involved in the decay. This relation is found to be a generalization of the Geiger-Nuttall law in alpha radioactivity and explains well all known cluster decays. Predictions on the most likely emissions of various clusters are presented.

Abstract:The deviation of the decay law from the exponential is a well known effect of quantum mechanics. Here we analyze the relativistic survival probabilities, $S(t,p)$, where $p$ is the momentum of the decaying particle and provide analytical expressions for $S(t,p)$ in the exponential (E) as well as the nonexponential (NE) regions at small and large times. Under minimal assumptions on the spectral density function, analytical expressions for the critical times of transition from the NE to the E at small times and the E to NE at large times are derived. The dependence of the decay law on the relativistic Lorentz factor, $\gamma = 1/\sqrt{1 - v^2/c^2}$, reveals several interesting features. In the short time regime of the decay law, the critical time, $\tau_{st}$, shows a steady increase with $\gamma$, thus implying a larger NE region for particles decaying in flight. Comparing $S(t,p)$ with the well known time dilation formula, $e^{-\Gamma t/\gamma}$, in the exponential region, an expression for the critical $\gamma$ where $S(t,p)$ deviates most from $e^{-\Gamma t/\gamma}$ is presented. This is a purely quantum correction. Under particular conditions on the resonance parameters, there also exists a critical $\gamma$ at large times which decides if the NE region shifts backward or forward in time as compared to that for a particle at rest. All the above analytical results are supported by calculations involving realistic decays of hadrons and leptons.

Abstract:Abstract Neutrino oscillation experiments at accelerator energies aim to establish charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector by measuring the energy-dependent rate of ν e appearance and ν μ disappearance in a ν μ beam. These experiments can precisely measure ν μ cross sections at near detectors, but ν e cross sections are poorly constrained and require theoretical inputs. In particular, quantum electrodynamics radiative corrections are different for electrons and muons. These corrections are proportional to the small quantum electrodynamics coupling α ≈ 1/137; however, the large separation of scales between the neutrino energy and the proton mass (~GeV), and the electron mass and soft-photon detection thresholds (~MeV) introduces large logarithms in the perturbative expansion. The resulting flavor differences exceed the percent-level experimental precision and depend on nonperturbative hadronic structure. We establish a factorization theorem for exclusive charged-current (anti)neutrino scattering cross sections representing them as a product of two factors. The first factor is flavor universal; it depends on hadronic and nuclear structure and can be constrained by high-statistics ν μ data. The second factor is non-universal and contains logarithmic enhancements, but can be calculated exactly in perturbation theory. For charged-current elastic scattering, we demonstrate the cancellation of uncertainties in the predicted ratio of ν e and ν μ cross sections. We point out the potential impact of non-collinear energetic photons and the distortion of the visible lepton spectra, and provide precise predictions for inclusive observables.

Abstract:Lattice QCD calculations of leptonic decay constants have now reached subpercent precision so that isospin-breaking corrections, including QED effects, must be included to fully exploit this precision in determining fundamental quantities, in particular the elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, from experimental measurements. A number of collaborations have performed, or are performing, such computations. In this paper we develop a new theoretical framework, based on infinite-volume reconstruction (IVR), for the computation of electromagnetic corrections to leptonic decay widths. In this method, the hadronic correlation functions are first processed theoretically in infinite volume, in such a way that the required matrix elements can be determined nonperturbatively from lattice QCD computations with finite-volume uncertainties which are exponentially small in the volume. The cancellation of infrared divergences in this framework is performed fully analytically. Abstract:We describe radiative corrections to bremsstrahlung and their application to high energy collider physics, focusing on the applications to luminosity measurement, fermion pair production and radiative return. We review the status of one loop radiative corrections in BHLUMI and the KKMC, including cross checks with newer results developed independently for radiative return. We outline a YFS-exponentiated approach to the Drell-Yan process for LHC physics, including a discussion of the relevant radiative corrections.
