Abstract:The presence of tumor hypoxia is known to correlate with poor patient prognosis. Measurement of tissue oxygen concentration can be challenging, but recent advancements using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) in three-dimensional positron emission tomography (PET) scans have shown promise for hypoxia detection. In this work, a novel method for estimating the orthopositronium lifetime in PALS is presented. This method is analytical and uses moments of the time-difference histogram from photon arrival times. For sufficient statistical power, the method produces monotonic, stable estimates. For cases with a lower number of photon counts, the method was characterized and solutions are presented to correct for bias and estimation variability.

Abstract:A detection system of the conventional PET tomograph is set-up to record data from e+ e- annihilation into two photons with energy of 511 keV, and it gives information on the density distribution of a radiopharmaceutical in the body of the object. In this paper we explore the possibility of performing the three gamma photons imaging based on ortho-positronium annihilation, as well as the possibility of positronium mean lifetime imaging with the J-PET tomograph constructed from plastic scintillators. For this purposes simulations of the ortho-positronium formation and its annihilation into three photons were performed taking into account distributions of photons' momenta as predicted by the theory of quantum electrodynamics and the response of the J-PET tomograph. In order to test the proposed ortho-positronium lifetime image reconstruction method, we concentrate on the decay of the ortho-positronium into three photons and applications of radiopharmaceuticals labeled with isotopes emitting a prompt gamma quantum. The proposed method of imaging is based on the determination of hit-times and hit-positions of registered photons which enables the reconstruction of the time and position of the annihilation point as well as the lifetime of the ortho-positronium on an event-by-event basis. We have simulated the production of the positronium in a cylindrical phantom composed of a set of different materials in which the ortho-positronium lifetime varied from 2.0 ns to 3.0 ns, as expected for ortho-positronium created in the human body. The presented reconstruction method for total-body J-PET like detector allows to achieve a mean lifetime resolution of about 40 ps. Recent Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy measurements of cancerous and healthy uterine tissues show that this sensitivity may allow to study the morphological changes in cell structures.

Abstract:The ortho-positronium (o-Ps), which consists of an electron and positron, is a pure lepton bound system. The o\|Ps lifetime can be calculated accurately by quantum electrodynamics, but there is a long\|standing discrepancy between the theoretical calculations and the experimental results. Theoretical and experimental physicists have worked hard for a long time to solve the problem, and recently finally solved this lifetime puzzle. We briefly outline the discrepancy between the theoretical calculations of the o\|Ps annihilation decay rate and some of the experimental measurements, as well as recent developments of experimental techniques, and its final solution. In particular, the final results of the Tokyo and Michigan groups are discussed.

Abstract:The objective of this work is to showcase the ortho-positronium lifetime as a probe for soft-tissue characterization. We employed positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy to experimentally measure the three components of the positron annihilation lifetime para-positronium (p-Ps), positron, and ortho-positronium (o-Ps) for three types of porcine, non-fixated soft tissues ex vivo: adipose, hepatic, and muscle.Then, we benchmarked our measurements with X-ray phase-contrast imaging, which is the current state-of-the-art for soft-tissue analysis. We found that the o-Ps lifetime in adipose tissues (2.54+/-0.12) ns was approximately 20\% longer than in hepatic (2.04+/-0.09 ns) and muscle (2.03+/-0.12 ns) tissues .In addition, the separation between the measurements for adipose tissue and the other tissues was better from o-Ps lifetime measurement than from X-ray phase-contrast imaging. This experimental study proved that the o-Ps lifetime is a viable non-invasive probe for characterizing and classifying the different soft tissues. Specifically, o-Ps lifetime as a soft-tissue characterization probe had a strong sensitivity to the lipid content that can be potentially implemented in commercial positron emission tomography scanners that feature list-mode data acquisition.

Abstract:Positronium is the simplest bound state, built of an electron and a positron. Studies of positronium in vacuum and its decays in medium tell us about Quantum Electrodynamics, QED, and about the structure of matter and biological processes of living organisms at the nanoscale, respectively. Spectroscopic measurements constrain our understanding of QED bound state theory. Searches for rare decays and measurements of the effect of gravitation on positronium are used to look for new physics phenomena. In biological materials positronium decays are sensitive to the inter- and intra-molecular structure and to the metabolism of living organisms ranging from single cells to human beings. This leads to new ideas of positronium imaging in medicine using the fact that during positron emission tomography (PET) as much as 40% of positron annihilation occurs through the production of positronium atoms inside the patient's body. A new generation of the high sensitivity and multi-photon total-body PET systems opens perspectives for clinical applications of positronium as a biomarker of tissue pathology and the degree of tissue oxidation.

Abstract:A number of experiments show that the decay lifetimes of muons bound to atomic nuclei are longer than the decay lifetimes of free muons. In this paper, a scheme of extending quantum mechanics (EQM) is proposed to resolve this problem. The Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger's equation is obtained to prove the validation of this attempt. The decay ratio of bound muons is also calculated in EQM, and the result is in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:The v = 1 -> 0 radiative lifetime of NH (X triplet-Sigma-, v=1,N=0) is determined to be tau_rad,exp. = 37.0 +/- 0.5 stat +2.0 / -0.8 sys miliseconds, corresponding to a transition dipole moment of |mu_10| = 0.0540 + 0.0009 / -0.0018 Debye. To achieve the long observation times necessary for direct time-domain measurement, vibrationally excited NH (X triplet-Sigma-, v=1,N=0) radicals are magnetically trapped using helium buffer-gas loading. Simultaneous trapping and lifetime measurement of both the NH(v=1, N=0) and NH(v=0,N=0) populations allows for accurate extraction of tau_rad,exp. Background helium atoms are present during our measurement of tau_rad,exp., and the rate constant for helium atom induced collisional quenching of NH(v=1,N=0) was determined to be k_q < 3.9 * 10^-15 cm^3/s. This bound on k_q yields the quoted systematic uncertainty on tau_rad,exp. Using an ab initio dipole moment function and an RKR potential, we also determine a theoretical value of 36.99 ms for this lifetime, in agreement with our experimental value. Our results provide an independent determination of tau_rad,10, test molecular theory, and furthermore demonstrate the efficacy of buffer-gas loading and trapping in determining metastable radiative and collisional lifetimes.

Abstract:Positron emission tomography (PET) traditionally uses coincident annihilation photons emitted from a positron interacting with an electron to localize cancer within the body. The formation of positronium (Ps), a bonded electron-positron pair, has not been utilized in clinical applications of PET due to the need to detect either the emission of a prompt gamma ray or the decay of higher-order coincident events. Assessment of the lifetime of the formed Ps, however, can potentially yield additional diagnostic information of the surrounding tissue because Ps properties vary due to void size and molecular composition. To assess the feasibility of measuring Ps lifetimes with a PET scanner, experiments were performed in a Biograph Vision Quadra (Siemens Healthineers). Quadra is a long-axial field-of-view (LA-FOV) PET scanner capable of producing list-mode data from single interaction events.

Abstract:The decay J/psi --> gamma pi(0)pi(0) is studied with 7.0 x 10(6) J/psi events collected in the neutral trigger mode by the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. Evidence for the existence of f(J)(1710) and xi(2230) in this channel is presented, and the corresponding masses as well as the product branching ratios are obtained. An interpretation of the 5(2230) as a glueball is favored. [S0031-9007(98)06780-5].
Measurement of the $\text{1}^\text{3}\text{S}_\text{1} \to \text{2}^\text{3}\text{S}_\text{1}$ interval in positronium using field-ionization of Rydberg states

Abstract:We report a new 40 ppb measurement of the positronium $\text{1}^\text{3}\text{S}_\text{1} \to \text{2}^\text{3}\text{S}_\text{1}$ interval using pulsed two-photon optical spectroscopy. The transition is detected via field-ionization of atoms excited from the 2S to the 20P Rydberg state. Precise Monte-Carlo line-shape simulations allow for the accounting of effects such as Doppler and AC Stark shifts, while an optical heterodyne measurement of the excitation laser pulse is used to correct for laser frequency chirp. A value of $1\,233\,607\,210.5\pm 49.6\, \mathrm{MHz}$ was obtained. This scheme allows for the measurement of the velocity distribution of positronium atoms to correct for the second-order Doppler effect. This is the major source of systematic uncertainty expected for future measurements of this transition with a CW laser, thus, our technique paves the way toward a new generation of a high precision determination of this interval in positronium.

Abstract:With the charged-particle decay spectroscopy extended to the proton drip-line region, half-lives of nuclei of interest decrease rapidly. Consequently, severe signal piling-up resulting from the implanted ions and their successive decays in position sensitive detectors become more and more common. To extract the spectroscopic information from the pile-up pulses with good accuracy, a digital pulse analysis algorithm is presented in this paper and validated with the alpha decay of Th-219 and the internal conversion electron decays of Ra-210,Ra-211 isomers, all of which have similar to mu s half-lives. The results show that with proper baseline correction, standard pulse construction and plateau-region fitting etc., the spectroscopic information of overlapping signals with time separation down to 80 ns and amplitude of individual pile-up pulse down to 70 keV, can be readily extracted.

Abstract:Magnetic bottle Time-of-Flight (ToF) spectrometers can measure the energy spectra of all electrons emitted into a 2$\pi$ sr solid angle simultaneously, greatly reducing data collection time. When the detection of the annihilation gamma ($\gamma$) and the detection of the electron (e) are used as timing signals for ToF spectrometers, the e-$\gamma$ time difference spectra (e-$\gamma$ TDS) are reflective of the positron-induced electron energy distributions provided the times between the impact of the positrons and the emission of the annihilation gammas are short compared to the flight times of the electrons. This is typically the case since positrons have short lifetime in solids ($\sim$ 100 - 500 ps) compared to the flight times of the secondary electrons ($10^2$ ns to $10^3$ ns). However, if the positron leaves the surface as a positronium atom (a bound electron-positron state), the annihilation gamma photons can be appreciably delayed due to the longer ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetime. This can result in an e-$\gamma$ TDS having an exponential tail with a decay constant related to the o-Ps lifetime. Here, we present an analysis of the e-$\gamma$ TDS using a Monte Carlo model which estimates the spectral contributions resulting from o-Ps annihilations. By removing the contributions from the delayed gamma signal, the energy spectrum of Positron Impact-Induced Secondary electrons (PIISE) can be isolated. Furthermore, our analysis allows an estimation of the intensity of the exponential tail in the e-$\gamma$ TDS providing a method to measure the fraction of positrons that form Ps at solid surfaces without relying on assumed 100% Ps emitting surfaces for calibration.

Abstract:Positronium and muonium, as purely leptonic atoms without internal structure, provide ideal systems for high-precision tests of quantum electrodynamics (QED) and measurements of fundamental constants. However, the high velocities of these lightweight atoms complicate precision spectroscopy, particularly in the 1S-2S transition, due to transit time broadening and second-order Doppler shifts. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel method combining two-photon Ramsey spectroscopy with a technique to correct the second-order Doppler shifts on an atom-by-atom basis. Additionally, this approach suppresses systematic effects of the AC Stark shift to a negligible level compared to the target precision. Simulations predict that for both positronium and muonium, this method could improve the measurement precision of the 1S-2S transition by more than two orders of magnitude compared to the current state of the art. This approach opens up new avenues for rigorous bound-state QED tests and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract:Using a silica aerogel sample with oxygen gas introduced as the positronium source, the gamma-ray energy from the parapositronium 2-gamma-annihilation has been measured as 510998.7 (2.5) eV by means of the comparison with the known gamma-energy 511856.2 (2.3) eV of the Ru-106 gamma-ray. The result, after a revision of the binding energy of positronium, is compared with the adjusted value of the electron rest mass published several years ago.

Abstract:Recently, the O(alpha) and O(alpha^3 ln(alpha)) radiative corrections to the orthopositronium lifetime have been presented in closed analytical form, in terms of basic irrational numbers that can be evaluated numerically to arbitrary precision [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 193401 (2008)]. Here, we present the details of this calculation and reveal the nature of these new constants. We also list explicit transformation formulas for generalized polylogarithms of weight four, which may be useful for other applications.

Abstract:The measurement of positron--nucleus collisions was used to estimate the possibility of suppressing background events that simulate $\beta\beta$ decay in the emulsion region adjacent to molybdenum conglomerates. The range of the escape of two relativistic particles from the interaction was found to be $<d> = (0.60\pm 0.03) ~\mu$m, which approximately corresponds to the grain size of developed nuclear emulsion. No correlation of the values of d with the angle between two relativistic particles was observed. It was shown that it was possible to exclude $\beta\beta$ decay background from electrons emerging in the decay of elements of naturally occurring radioactive chains. The background from $\beta$ decays of $^{90}$Sr and $^{40}$K available in emulsion around Mo conglomerates was determined by the ratio of the volume $(\sim d^3)$ to the total volume of emulsion and was found to be $1.5\cdot 10^{-2}$. It was shown that the backgrounds from $^{40}$K, $^{90}$Sr and natural radioactivity could be significantly suppressed and would not limit the sensitivity of the experiment with 1 kg $^{100}$Mo.

Abstract:Positron annihilation age-momentum correlation (AMOC) spectroscopy is not only a critical approach to investigate positronium formation and annihilation, but also a powerful technique for materials science to characterize the chemical environment of pores. However, due to the long measurement time (several days to collect 10 million counts for one sample, at a low coincidence counting rate of approximately 20–40 cps) of a conventional non-beam-based AMOC spectrometer, AMOC technique has been rarely applied. In this work, based on the geometrical simulations of detectors using Geant4 program, we developed a new semi-digital AMOC spectrometer with two start detectors. After systematic optimizations of geometrical configurations of detectors, timebase of digital oscillator, and the energy windows of start and stop detectors, this instrument achieved the highest coincidence counting rate for a non-beam-based AMOC spectrometer ( ∼ 180 cps for a narrow stop energy window of 469–589 keV and the shaping time of HPGe detector at T shapingHPGe = 6μs , and ∼ 500 cps for a wide stop energy window of 104–589 keV and T shapingHPGe = 2μs ). The drastic rise of coincidence counting rate will broaden the applications of AMOC spectrometers in positronium physics and materials characterization in future.
