Abstract:Higher-order QED radiative corrections to muon decay spectrum are evaluated within the QED structure function approach in the next-to-leading order logarithmic approximation. New analytical results are given in the $\mathcal{O}\left(\alpha^3 \ln^2(m_\mu^2/m_e^2)\right)$ order. Earlier results in $\mathcal{O}\left(\alpha^2 \ln^1(m_\mu^2/m_e^2)\right)$ and $\mathcal{O}\left(\alpha^3 \ln^3(m_\mu^2/m_e^2)\right)$ orders are partially corrected. Numerical estimates of different contributions are presented.

Abstract:The dominant theoretical uncertainties in both the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the value of the electromagnetic coupling at the Z scale, M(Z), arise from their hadronic contributions. Since these will ultimately dominate the experimental errors, we study the correlation between them, as well as with other fundamental parameters. To this end we present analytical formulas for the QCD contribution from higher energies and from heavy quarks. Including these correlations affects the Higgs boson mass extracted from precision data.
Radiative Corrections to the Muon Polarization in the Semileptonic Decay of a Neutral Kaon

Abstract:A model-independent expression for the Dalitz plot of the semileptonic decays of a neutral kaon $K_{\mu 3}^0$, including radiative corrections to order $\mathcal{O}[(\alpha / \pi )(q/M_1)]$, where $q$ is the four-momentum transfer and $M_1$ is the mass of the decaying kaon, is presented. In this paper the emitted muon is considered to be polarized so the analysis is centered on numerically evaluating the radiative corrections to the longitudinal, transverse, and normal polarization muon components. The model dependence of radiative corrections is kept in general form within this approximation, which is useful for model-independent experimental analyses. The final expressions, with the triple integration of the bremsstrahlung photon variables are ready to be performed numerically. The radiative corrections to the components of the muon polarization are found to be very small compared to their respective uncorrected values.

Abstract:For an accurate theoretical description of muonic bound systems, it is crucial to consistently treat relativistic and recoil corrections to vacuum polarization. The one-loop vacuum-polarization effect is by far the dominant quantum electrodynamic (QED) energy correction for bound muons, being of order $\alpha (Z\alpha)^2 m_r$, where $\alpha$ is the fine-structure constant, $Z$ is the nuclear charge number, and $m_r$ is the reduced mass. Gauge invariance of the relativistic and recoil corrections to vacuum polarization of order $\alpha (Z\alpha)^4 m_r$ is investigated with respect to nonretarded and standard, renormalized variants of Coulomb gauge. The invariance is shown after including three-photon exchange diagrams. Our derivation is based on an adapted form of Nonrelativistic Quantum Electrodynamics for bound muon systems (NRQED$_\mu$), which is a version of NRQED where the hard scale is set at the muon mass instead of the electron mass. Updated values for the gauge-independent corrections for one-muon ions with nuclear charge numbers $Z = 1,2,6$ are presented.

Abstract:Analytical expressions for the tenth order electromagnetic corrections to the lepton ($L=e, ~\mu $ and $\tau$) anomaly $a_L$ are derived explicitly for a class of Feynman diagrams with insertions of the vacuum polarization operator consisting of four closed lepton loops. We consider a particular case when one loop is formed by the lepton $L$ of the same kind as the one under consideration, the other three loops being formed by leptons $\ell\neq L$. The method is based on the consecutive application of dispersion relations for the polarization operator and the Mellin--Barnes transform for the propagators of massive particles. The result is expressed in terms of the mass ratio $r=m_\ell/m_L$. We investigate the behaviour of the exact analytical expressions as $r\to 0$ and $r\to \infty$ and compare them with the corresponding asymptotic expansions known in the literature.

Abstract:The analytical calculation of the complete $\alpha\,(Z\,\alpha)^6$ one-loop radiative correction to energies of two-body systems with the angular momenta $l>0$, consisting of a pointlike particle and an extended-size nucleus with arbitrary masses and spin 1/2, is presented. The obtained results apply to a wide variety of two-body systems, such as hydrogen, muonium, positronium, and antiprotonic atoms.

Abstract:We consider three-loop radiative corrections to the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting. Corrections of order $\alpha^3(Z\alpha)^5m$ are the largest still unknown contributions to the Lamb shift in hydrogen. We calculated radiative corrections to the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting generated by the diagrams with insertions of one radiative photon and electron polarization loops in the graphs with two external photons. We also obtained corrections generated by the gauge invariant sets of diagrams with two reducible radiative photon insertions in the electron line and polarization operator insertion in one of the radiative photons, and diagrams with two reducible radiative photon insertions in the electron line and polarization operator insertion in one the external photons. Corrections to the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting generated by the diagrams with insertions of the three-loop one-particle reducible diagrams with radiative photons in the electron line are calculated in the Yennie gauge.

Analytically, the radiative corrections are expressed in terms of the ratio $r=m_\ell/m_L$ of the internal to external lepton masses. The dependence on $r$ is investigated numerically in the whole interval of $r$, $0 < r < \infty$. To make comparisons with earlier published results possible, our exact analytical expressions are expanded about $r=0$ and $r \to \infty$ and compared with the corresponding asymptotic expansions known in the literature.

Abstract:We present a new study of polarized elastic muon-electron scattering. The Born cross-section is calculated for arbitrary polarization of muon and electron. The complete photonic O(alpha) radiative corrections are determined for the case of longitudinally polarized muons and electrons. All calculations are done by two methods: semianalytic, which allows an implementation of the experimental cuts used for the analysis of MU-E scattering data from the beam polarimeter of the SMC experiment at CERN and completely analytic, which is used for cross checks The FORTRAN code MUELA realizes formulae of both approaches. We prove that certain experimental cuts lead to negligible radiative corrections in the muon beam polarization experiment.

Abstract:The increasing accuracy of current and planned experiments to measure the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon requires more precision and reliability of its theoretical calculation. For this purpose, we calculate the differential cross section for the process of annihilation of an electron-positron pair into two photons, one of which is virtual, accompanied by the emission of soft photons, taking into account radiative corrections of the order $\alpha^2$. The results obtained can be used to improve the accuracy of calculating the contribution of the hadron vacuum polarization to the muon anomalous moment. It is shown that all logarithmically amplified two-loop corrections can be easily found using modern theorems of soft and collinear factorizations and available one-loop results.

Abstract:Abstract Neutrino oscillation experiments at accelerator energies aim to establish charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector by measuring the energy-dependent rate of ν e appearance and ν μ disappearance in a ν μ beam. These experiments can precisely measure ν μ cross sections at near detectors, but ν e cross sections are poorly constrained and require theoretical inputs. In particular, quantum electrodynamics radiative corrections are different for electrons and muons. These corrections are proportional to the small quantum electrodynamics coupling α ≈ 1/137; however, the large separation of scales between the neutrino energy and the proton mass (~GeV), and the electron mass and soft-photon detection thresholds (~MeV) introduces large logarithms in the perturbative expansion. The resulting flavor differences exceed the percent-level experimental precision and depend on nonperturbative hadronic structure. We establish a factorization theorem for exclusive charged-current (anti)neutrino scattering cross sections representing them as a product of two factors. The first factor is flavor universal; it depends on hadronic and nuclear structure and can be constrained by high-statistics ν μ data. The second factor is non-universal and contains logarithmic enhancements, but can be calculated exactly in perturbation theory. For charged-current elastic scattering, we demonstrate the cancellation of uncertainties in the predicted ratio of ν e and ν μ cross sections. We point out the potential impact of non-collinear energetic photons and the distortion of the visible lepton spectra, and provide precise predictions for inclusive observables.

Abstract:High-energy muons can travel large thicknesses of matter. For underground neutrino and cosmic ray detectors the energy loss of muons has to be known accurately for simulations. In this article the next-to-leading order correction to the average energy loss of muons through bremsstrahlung is calculated using a modified Weizsäcker–Williams method. An analytical parametrisation of the numerical results is given.

Complete lowest order radiative corrections in semi-inclusive scattering of polarized particles

Abstract:The lowest order radiative corrections to the cross section and asymmetries measured in experiments on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarized particles were calculated. Both exact and leading log expressions were presented and discussed for the total correction that include the contributions from the processes of (i) real photon emission with semi-inclusive processes, (ii) loop diagrams, and (iii) real photon emission with exclusive processes. Radiative corrections to the Sivers and Collins asymmetries in $\pi^+$ electroproduction were studied numerically within the kinematical conditions of modern experimental environments at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab). The Wandzura-Wilczek approximation for the semi-inclusive structure functions and MAID2007 parameterization for the six amplitudes of exclusive processes were used in numeric analyses. The results show that (i) radiative effects can generate a correction comparable to the size of Sivers and Collins asymmetries at the Born level, (ii) there is good agreement between the exact and leading-order corrections, (iii) external functions (that is, other than the Sivers and Collins functions in the respective asymmetries) can generate a contribution to the radiative correction up to 20\%, and (iv) there exists a strong dependence of the radiative correction on the models for semi-inclusive and exclusive structure functions.
