Abstract:We generalize a theorem of W. Jockusch and J. Propp on quartered Aztec diamonds by enumerating the tilings of quartered Aztec rectangles. We use subgraph replacement method to transform the dual graph of a quartered Aztec rectangle to the dual graph of a quartered lozenge hexagon, and then use Lindström-Gessel-Viennot methodology to find the number of tilings of a quartered lozenge hexagon.

Off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of odd order

Abstract:We study the enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds in two directions: (1) with one boundary defect, and (2) with maximally-many zeroes on the diagonal. In the first direction, we prove a symmetry property which states that the numbers of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $2n-1$ are equal when the boundary defect is at the $k$th position and the $(2n-k)$th position on the boundary, respectively. This symmetry property proves a special case of a recent conjecture by Behrend, Fischer, and Koutschan. In the second direction, a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of "nearly" off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds, where the entries of the Pfaffian satisfy a simple recurrence relation. The numbers of domino tilings mentioned in the above two directions do not seem to have a simple product formula, but we show that these numbers satisfy simple matrix equations in which the entries of the matrix are given by Delannoy numbers. The proof of these results involves the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths. Finally, we propose conjectures concerning the log-concavity and asymptotic behavior of the number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds.

Abstract:We consider several new families of graphs obtained from Aztec rectangle and augmented Aztec rectangle graphs by trimming two opposite corners. We prove that the perfect matchings of these new graphs are enumerated by powers of $2$, $3$, $5$, and $11$. The result yields a proof of a conjectured posed by Ciucu. In addition, we reveal a hidden relation between our graphs and the hexagonal dungeons introduced by Blum.

Abstract:The expanded Aztec diamond is a generalized version of the Aztec diamond, with an arbitrary number of long columns and long rows in the middle. In this paper, we count the number of domino tilings of the expanded Aztec diamond. The exact number of domino tilings is given by recurrence relations of state matrices by virtue of the state matrix recursion algorithm, recently developed by the author to solve various two-dimensional regular lattice model enumeration problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we give inductive sum formulas to calculate the number of diagonally symmetric, and diagonally \& anti-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of Aztec Diamonds. As a byproduct, we also find such a formula for the unrestricted case as well. Our proofs rely on a new technique for counting the number of perfect matchings of graphs, proposed by the authors recently.

Abstract:We use the subgraph replacement method to investigate new properties of the tilings of regions on the square lattice with diagonals drawn in. In particular, we show that the centrally symmetric tilings of a generalization of the Aztec diamond are always enumerated by a simple product formula. This result generalizes the previous work of Ciucu (1997) and Yang (1992) about symmetric tilings of the Aztec diamond. We also use our method to prove a closed-form product formula for the number of centrally symmetric tilings of a quasi-hexagon.

Abstract:The first author recently introduced an integer sequence now numbered A355519 in OEIS. This sequence arose from counting bracket tournaments; its study evokes the analysis of the Catalan triangle (sequence A009766 in OEIS) and the related Catalan numbers, sequence A000108 in OEIS. We therefore introduce a general construction that places these sequences on the same footing and suggests many new integer sequences. We provide code for performing this construction and a lengthy list of examples. This construction determines a function from input sequences to output sequences. Some of the resulting output sequences are in OEIS and others are not.

Abstract:In how many ways can you place n chocolate pieces all of different sizes in an n by n chocolate box, in such a way that when you go from left to right and from top to bottom, there are no gaps AND the sizes increase along each row and each column? The answer is the well-known OEIS Sequence Number 85. To our amazement, the analogous sequence for a three-dimensional chocolate box was not there. Here we fill this gap, and more importantly, offer some computational and theoretical challenges about enumerating families of Solid Standard Young Tableaux.

This lets us prove statements that are claimed without proof in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences and some popular YouTube videos, and also prove some new results. We also give formulas that apply when the cevians cut each side into equal-length pieces.

Abstract:Given a discrete lattice, $\Gamma < \text{SL}_m(\mathbb{R})$, and a base point $o\in \mathbb{R}^m$, let $N_\Gamma(T)$ denote the number of points in the orbit $o\cdot \Gamma$ whose (Euclidean) length is bounded by a growing parameter, $T$. We demonstrate an abstract spectral method capable of obtaining strong asymptotic estimates for $N_\Gamma(T)$ without relying on the meromorphic continuation of higher rank Langlands Eisenstein series.

Abstract:The Tangent Method of Colomo and Sportiello is applied to the study of the asymptotics of domino tilings of large Aztec rectangles, with some fixed distribution of defects along a boundary. The associated Non-Intersecting Lattice Path configurations are made of Schröder paths whose weights involve two parameters $\gamma$ and $q$ keeping track respectively of one particular type of step and of the area below the paths. We derive the arctic curve for an arbitrary distribution of defects, and illustrate our result with a number of examples involving different classes of boundary defects.

Enumeration of crossings in two-step puzzles

Abstract:We prove a formula which gives the number of occurrences of certain labels and local configurations inside two-step puzzles introduced by Buch, Kresch, Purbhoo and Tamvakis from the work of Knutson. Puzzles are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles and are known to compute the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology of two-step flag varieties. The formula that we obtain depends only on the boundary conditions of the puzzle. The proof is based on the study of color maps which are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles obtained from puzzles.

Abstract:We consider the problem of counting and classifying domino tilings of a quadriculated torus. The counting problem for rectangles was studied by Kasteleyn and we use many of his ideas. Domino tilings of planar regions can be represented by height functions; for a torus given by a lattice L, these functions exhibit arithmetic L-quasiperiodicity. The additive constants determine the flux of the tiling, which can be interpreted as a vector in the dual lattice (2L)*. We give a characterization of the actual flux values, and of how corresponding tilings behave. We also consider domino tilings of the infinite square lattice; tilings of tori can be seen as a particular case of those. We describe the construction and usage of Kasteleyn matrices in the counting problem, and how they can be applied to count tilings with prescribed flux values. Finally, we study the limit distribution of the number of tilings with a given flux value as a uniform scaling dilates the lattice L.

Abstract:Several articles deal with tilings with various shapes, and also a very frequent type of combinatorics is to examine the walks on graphs or on grids. We combine these two things and give the numbers of the shortest walks crossing the tiled $(1\times n)$ and $(2\times n)$ square grids by covering them with squares and dominoes. We describe these numbers not only recursively, but also as rational polynomial linear combinations of Fibonacci numbers.
