Abstract:We describe Maple packages for the automatic generation of generating functions(and series expansions) for counting lattice animals(fixed polyominoes), in the two-dimensional hexagonal lattice, of bounded but arbitrary width. Our Maple packages(complete with source code) are easy-to-use and available from my website.

Abstract:We present an implementation of Redelemeier's algorithm for the enumeration of lattice animals in high dimensional lattices. The implementation is lean and fast enough to allow us to extend the existing tables of animal counts, perimeter polynomials and series expansion coefficients in $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattices for $3 \leq d\leq 10$. From the data we compute formulas for perimeter polynomials for lattice animals of size $n\leq 11$ in arbitrary dimension $d$. When amended by combinatorial arguments, the new data suffices to yield explicit formulas for the number of lattice animals of size $n\leq 14$ and arbitrary $d$. We also use the enumeration data to compute numerical estimates for growth rates and exponents in high dimensions that agree very well with Monte Carlo simulations and recent predictions from field theory.

Abstract:This article introduces a new, simple solvable lattice for directed animals: the directed king's lattice, or square lattice with next nearest neighbor bonds and preferred directions {W, NW, N, NE, E}. We show that the directed animals in this lattice have an algebraic generating function linked to the Schröder numbers and belong to the same universality class as the ones in the square and triangular lattices. We also define multi-directed animals in the king's lattice, which form a superclass of directed animals. We compute their generating function and show that it is not D-finite. Finally, we propose efficient random sampling algorithms for our animals.

Abstract:We have analysed the recently extended series for the number of self-avoiding walks (SAWs) that cross an square between diagonally opposed corners. The number of such walks is known to grow as We have made more precise the estimate of based on additional series coefficients provided by several authors, and refined analysis techniques. We estimate that We have also studied the subdominant behaviour, and conjecture that where and We implemented a very efficient algorithm for enumerating paths on the square and hexagonal lattices making use of a minimal perfect hash function and in-place memory updating of the arrays for the counts of the number of paths. Using this algorithm we extended and then analysed series for SAWs spanning the square lattice and self-avoiding polygons (SAPs) crossing the square lattice. These are known to also grow as The sub-dominant term is found to be the same as for SAWs crossing the square, while the exponent for spanning SAWs and for SAPs. We have also studied the analogous problems on the hexagonal lattice, and generated series for a number of geometries. In particular, we study SAWs and SAPs crossing rhomboidal, triangular and square domains on the hexagonal lattice, as well as SAWs spanning a rhombus. We estimate that the analogous growth constant so an even more precise estimate than found for the square lattice. We also give estimates of the sub-dominant terms.

Abstract:We study the statistics of column-convex lattice animals resulting from the stacking of squares on a single or double staircase. We obtain exact expressions for the number of animals with a given length and area, their mean length and their mean height. These objects are closely related to Fibonacci numbers. On a single staircase, the total number of animals with area k is given by the Fibonacci number F_k.

Abstract:In this case study in ``fully automated enumeration'', we illustrate how to take full advantage of symbolic computation by developing (what we call) `symbolic-dynamical-programming' algorithms for computing many terms of `hard to compute sequences', namely the number of Latin trapezoids, generalized derangements, and generalized three-rowed Latin rectangles. At the end we also sketch the proof of a generalization of Ira Gessel's 1987 theorem that says that for any number of rows, k, the number of Latin rectangles with k rows and n columns is P-recursive in n. Our algorithms are fully implemented in Maple, and generated quite a few terms of such sequences.

Abstract:We introduce multivariate rational generating series called Hall-Littlewood-Schubert ($\mathsf{HLS}_n$) series. They are defined in terms of polynomials related to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and semistandard Young tableaux. We show that $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series provide solutions to a range of enumeration problems upon judicious substitutions of their variables. These include the problem to enumerate sublattices of a $p$-adic lattice according to the elementary divisor types of their intersections with the members of a complete flag of reference in the ambient lattice. This is an affine analog of the stratification of Grassmannians by Schubert varieties. Other substitutions of $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield new formulae for Hecke series and $p$-adic integrals associated with symplectic $p$-adic groups, and combinatorially defined quiver representation zeta functions. $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series are $q$-analogs of Hilbert series of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with posets arising from parabolic quotients of Coxeter groups of type $\mathsf{B}$ with the Bruhat order. Special values of coarsened $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield analogs of the classical Littlewood identity for the generating functions of Schur polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we enumerate two families of polycubes, the directed plateau polycubes and the plateau polycubes, with respect to the width and a new parameter, the Lateral Area. We give an explicit formula and the generating function for each of the two families of polycubes. Moreover, some asymptotic results about plateau polycubes are provided. We also establish results concerning the enumeration of column-convex polyominoes that are useful to get asymptotic results of polycubes.

Abstract:We generalize a special case of a theorem of Proctor on the enumeration of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a maximal staircase removed, using Kuo's graphical condensation method. Additionally, we prove a formula for a weighted version of the given region. The result also extends work of Ciucu and Fischer. By applying the factorization theorem of Ciucu, we are also able to generalize a special case of MacMahon's boxed plane partition formula.

Abstract:In cases of both abelian and nonabelian gauge groups, we study the Higgs mechanism in the topologically massive gauge theories in an arbitrary space-time dimension. We show that when the conventional Higgs potential coexists with a topological term, gauge fields become massive by 'eating' simultaneously both the Nambu-Goldstone boson and a higher-rank tensor field, and instead a new massless scalar field is 'vomitted' in the physical spectrum. Because of the appearance of this new massless field, the number of the physical degrees of freedom remains unchanged before and after the spontaneous symmetry breakdown. Moreover, the fact that the new field is a physical and positive norm state is rigorously proved by performing the manifestly covariant quantization of the model in three and four dimensions. In the mechanism at hand, the presence of a topological term makes it possible to shift mass of gauge fields in a nontrivial manner compared to the conventional value.

Abstract:We consider minimal-perimeter lattice animals, providing a set of conditions which are sufficient for a lattice to have the property that inflating all minimal-perimeter animals of a certain size yields (without repetitions) all minimal-perimeter animals of a new, larger size. We demonstrate this result on the two-dimensional square and hexagonal lattices. In addition, we characterize the sizes of minimal-perimeter animals on these lattices that are not created by inflating members of another set of minimal-perimeter animals.

Abstract:We study the statistics of column-convex lattice animals generated by the stacking of squares on a staircase with step height p. We calculate the number of animals with area k living on l stairs. The total number of animals with area k is given by the generalized Fibonacci number F_p(k). Exact results for the mean length and mean height of animals with area k are also obtained and we examine their asymptotic behaviour.

Abstract:We provide combinatorial arguments based on a two-dimensional extension of a locally-free semigroup allowing us to compute the growth rate, $\Lambda$, of the partition function $Z_N=N^{\theta}\Lambda^N$ of the $N$-particle directed animals ($N\gg 1$) on a simple cubic lattice in a three-dimensional space. Establishing the bijection between the particular configuration of the lattice animal and a class of equivalences of words in the 2D projective locally-free semigroup, we find we find $\ln \Lambda = \lim_{N\to\infty} \ln Z_N / N$ with $\Lambda= 2(\sqrt{2}+1) \approx 4.8284$.

Lozenge Tilings of Hexagons with Intrusions I: Generalized Intrusion

Abstract:MacMahon's classical theorem on the number of boxed plane partitions has been generalized in several directions. One way to generalize the theorem is to view boxed plane partitions as lozenge tilings of a hexagonal region and then generalize it by making some holes in the region and counting its tilings. In this paper, we provide new regions whose numbers of lozenges tilings are given by simple product formulas. The regions we consider can be obtained from hexagons by removing structures called intrusions. In fact, we show that the tiling generating functions of those regions under certain weights are given by similar formulas. These give the $q$-analogue of the enumeration results.

Bivariate Generating Functions Enumerating Non-Bonding Dominoes on Rectangular Boards

Abstract:The manuscript studies configurations of non-overlapping non-bonding dominoes on finite rectangular boards of unit squares characterized by row and column number. The non-bonding dominoes are defined here by the requirement that any domino on the board shares at most one point (one of its four corner points) with any other domino, but no edge. With the Transfer Matrix Method, rational generating functions are derived that solve the enumeration problem entirely, here evaluated for boards with up to six rows or columns.

Abstract:The work of Mills, Robbins, and Rumsey on cyclically symmetric plane partitions yields a simple product formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a regular hexagon, which are invariant under roation by $120^{\circ}$. In this paper we generalize this result by enumerating the cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon in which four triangles have been removed in the center.

Abstract:Cylindrical algebraic decomposition (CAD) is an important tool for the investigation of semi-algebraic sets, with applications in algebraic geometry and beyond. We have previously reported on an implementation of CAD in Maple which offers the original projection and lifting algorithm of Collins along with subsequent improvements. Here we report on new functionality: specifically the ability to build cylindrical algebraic sub-decompositions (sub-CADs) where only certain cells are returned. We have implemented algorithms to return cells of a prescribed dimensions or higher (layered {\scad}s), and an algorithm to return only those cells on which given polynomials are zero (variety {\scad}s). These offer substantial savings in output size and computation time. The code described and an introductory Maple worksheet / pdf demonstrating the full functionality of the package are freely available online at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://opus.bath.ac.uk/43911/" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.
