Abstract:Given a discrete lattice, $\Gamma < \text{SL}_m(\mathbb{R})$, and a base point $o\in \mathbb{R}^m$, let $N_\Gamma(T)$ denote the number of points in the orbit $o\cdot \Gamma$ whose (Euclidean) length is bounded by a growing parameter, $T$. We demonstrate an abstract spectral method capable of obtaining strong asymptotic estimates for $N_\Gamma(T)$ without relying on the meromorphic continuation of higher rank Langlands Eisenstein series.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the counting problem on the orbits of discrete lattice points in high - dimensional spaces. Specifically, given a discrete lattice point \(\Gamma < SL_m(\mathbb{R})\) and a base point \(o\in\mathbb{R}^m\), define \(N_\Gamma(T)\) as the number of points in the orbit \(o\cdot\Gamma\) whose Euclidean length does not exceed \(T\). The goal of the paper is to obtain a strong asymptotic estimate of \(N_\Gamma(T)\) without relying on the meromorphic continuation of Langlands Eisenstein series of higher rank. ### Main research content 1. **Problem definition**: - Given a discrete lattice point \(\Gamma < SL_m(\mathbb{R})\) and a base point \(o\in\mathbb{R}^m\). - Define \(N_\Gamma(T)\) as the number of points in the orbit \(o\cdot\Gamma\) whose Euclidean length does not exceed \(T\), that is \[ N_\Gamma(T):=\#\{z\in o\cdot\Gamma:\|z\|\leq T\} \] where \(\|z\|^2 = z_1^2+\cdots+z_m^2\) (or another Archimedean norm). 2. **Existing methods and their limitations**: - The standard Tauberian method shows that the asymptotic expansion of \(N_\Gamma(T)\) is closely related to the meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series of mirabolic type. - Using spectral theory can obtain more precise results, but these methods are usually technically complex and difficult to generalize. 3. **Introduction of new methods**: - The paper proposes an abstract spectral - theory method, which can obtain a strong asymptotic estimate of \(N_\Gamma(T)\) without relying on the meromorphic continuation of Langlands Eisenstein series of higher rank. - This method avoids the technical problems in the traditional homogeneous dynamical system methods and is superior to the latter in terms of the error exponent. 4. **Main results**: - It is proved that there exist constants \(c_0 > 0, c_1,\ldots, c_k\) and \(\eta_m>0\) such that \[ N_\Gamma(T)=c_0T^m + c_1T^{(m - s_1)}+\cdots+c_kT^{(m - s_k)}+O(T^{m-\eta_m}) \] where \(s_i = m\sqrt{\lambda_i}\), \(\lambda_i\) is the eigenvalue of the Laplace operator \(\Delta\) on the locally symmetric space \(X = \Gamma\backslash G/K\). ### Applications and significance This method not only provides a new and simpler way to deal with the orbit - counting problem in high - dimensional spaces, but also can obtain stronger error estimates than existing methods in some cases. In addition, this method also has potential application value in dealing with other similar counting problems. By introducing the abstract spectral theory, the author successfully bypasses the technical difficulties of the meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series of higher rank, providing new ideas and tools for research in related fields.
