Abstract:We study the enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds in two directions: (1) with one boundary defect, and (2) with maximally-many zeroes on the diagonal. In the first direction, we prove a symmetry property which states that the numbers of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $2n-1$ are equal when the boundary defect is at the $k$th position and the $(2n-k)$th position on the boundary, respectively. This symmetry property proves a special case of a recent conjecture by Behrend, Fischer, and Koutschan. In the second direction, a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of "nearly" off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds, where the entries of the Pfaffian satisfy a simple recurrence relation. The numbers of domino tilings mentioned in the above two directions do not seem to have a simple product formula, but we show that these numbers satisfy simple matrix equations in which the entries of the matrix are given by Delannoy numbers. The proof of these results involves the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths. Finally, we propose conjectures concerning the log-concavity and asymptotic behavior of the number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds.

Abstract:In this paper, we give inductive sum formulas to calculate the number of diagonally symmetric, and diagonally \& anti-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of Aztec Diamonds. As a byproduct, we also find such a formula for the unrestricted case as well. Our proofs rely on a new technique for counting the number of perfect matchings of graphs, proposed by the authors recently.

Abstract:We study the 2-adic behavior of the number of domino tilings of a $2(2n+1)\times 2(2n+1)$ torus. We show that this number is of the form $2^{4n+3}g(n)^2+2^{8n+2}(2n+1)^{4n}h(n)$, where $g(n)$ and $h(n)$ are odd positive integers. Moreover, we prove that $g(n)$ and $h(n)$ are uniformly continuous under the 2-adic metric and invariant under interchanging $n$ and $-1-n$. This paper is an analogy of Henry Cohn's results for $2n\times 2n$ squares (Electron. J. Combin. 6 (1999)).
Colored vertex models and $k$-tilings of the Aztec diamond

Abstract:We study $k$-tilings ($k$-tuples of domino tilings) of the Aztec diamond of rank $m$. We assign a weight to each $k$-tiling, depending on the number of dominos of certain types and the number of "interactions" between the tilings. Employing the colored vertex models introduced in earlier work to study supersymmetric LLT polynomials, we compute the generating polynomials of the $k$-tilings. We then prove some combinatorial results about $k$-tilings, including a bijection between $k$-tilings with no interactions and $1$-tilings, and we compute the arctic curves of the tilings for $t=0$ and $t\rightarrow\infty$. We also present some lozenge $k$-tilings of the hexagon and compute the arctic curves of the tilings for $t=0$.

On a conjecture on prime double square tiles

Abstract:In [2], while studying a relevant class of polyominoes that tile the plane by translation, i.e., double square polyominoes, the authors found that their boundary words, encoded by the Freeman chain coding on a four letters alphabet, have specific interesting properties that involve notions of combinatorics on words such as palindromicity, periodicity and symmetry. Furthermore, they defined a notion of reducibility on double squares using homologous morphisms, so leading to a set of irreducible tile elements called prime double squares. The authors, by inspecting the boundary words of the smallest prime double squares, conjectured the strong property that no runs of two (or more) consecutive equal letters are present there. In this paper, we prove such a conjecture using combinatorics on words tools, and setting the path to the definition of a fast generation algorithm and to the possibility of enumerating the elements of this class w.r.t. standard parameters, as perimeter and area.

Abstract:The expanded Aztec diamond is a generalized version of the Aztec diamond, with an arbitrary number of long columns and long rows in the middle. In this paper, we count the number of domino tilings of the expanded Aztec diamond. The exact number of domino tilings is given by recurrence relations of state matrices by virtue of the state matrix recursion algorithm, recently developed by the author to solve various two-dimensional regular lattice model enumeration problems.

Abstract:We use the subgraph replacement method to investigate new properties of the tilings of regions on the square lattice with diagonals drawn in. In particular, we show that the centrally symmetric tilings of a generalization of the Aztec diamond are always enumerated by a simple product formula. This result generalizes the previous work of Ciucu (1997) and Yang (1992) about symmetric tilings of the Aztec diamond. We also use our method to prove a closed-form product formula for the number of centrally symmetric tilings of a quasi-hexagon.

Abstract:Di Francesco introduced Aztec triangles as combinatorial objects for which their domino tilings are equinumerous with certain sets of configurations of the twenty-vertex model that are the main focus of his article. We generalize Di Francesco's construction of Aztec triangles. While we do not know whether there is again a correspondence with configurations in the twenty-vertex model, we prove closed-form product formulas for the number of domino tilings of our generalized Aztec triangles. As a special case, we obtain a proof of Di Francesco's conjectured formula for the number of domino tilings of his Aztec triangles, and thus for the number of the corresponding configurations in the twenty-vertex model.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of W. Jockusch and J. Propp on quartered Aztec diamonds by enumerating the tilings of quartered Aztec rectangles. We use subgraph replacement method to transform the dual graph of a quartered Aztec rectangle to the dual graph of a quartered lozenge hexagon, and then use Lindström-Gessel-Viennot methodology to find the number of tilings of a quartered lozenge hexagon.

Abstract:We review the connections between the octahedral recurrence, $\lambda$-determinants and tiling problems. This provides in particular a direct combinatorial interpretation of the $\lambda$-determinant (and generalizations thereof) of an arbitrary matrix in terms of domino tilings of Aztec diamonds. We also reinterpret the general Robbins-Rumsey formula for the rational function of consecutive minors, given by a summation over pairs of compatible alternating sign matrices, as the partition function for tilings of Aztec diamonds equipped with a general measure.

Abstract:A famous result of D. Walkup is that an $m\times n$ rectangle may be tiled by T-tetrominos if and only if both $m$ and $n$ are multiples of 4. The "if" portion may be proved by tiling a $4\times 4$ block, and then copying that block to fill the rectangle; but, this leads to regular, periodic tilings. In this paper we investigate how much "order" must be present in every tiling of a rectangle by T-tetrominos, where we measure order by length of arithmetic progressions of tiles.

Locked Polyomino Tilings

Abstract:A locked $t$-omino tiling is a grid tiling by $t$-ominoes such that, if you remove any pair of tiles, the only way to fill in the remaining $2t$ grid cells with $t$-ominoes is to use the same two tiles in the exact same configuration as before. We exclude degenerate cases where there is only one tiling overall due to small dimensions. It is a classic (and straightforward) result that finite grids do not admit locked 2-omino tilings. In this paper, we construct explicit locked $t$-omino tilings for $t \geq 3$ on grids of various dimensions. Most notably, we show that locked 3- and 4-omino tilings exist on finite square grids of arbitrarily large size, and locked $t$-omino tilings of the infinite grid exist for arbitrarily large $t$. The result for 4-omino tilings in particular is remarkable because they are so rare and difficult to construct: Only a single tiling is known to exist on any grid up to size $40 \times 40$. In a weighted version of the problem where vertices of the grid may have weights from the set $\{1, 2\}$ that count toward the total tile size, we demonstrate the existence of locked tilings on arbitrarily large square weighted grids with only 6 tiles. Locked $t$-omino tilings arise as obstructions to widely used political redistricting algorithms in a model of redistricting where the underlying census geography is a grid graph. Most prominent is the ReCom Markov chain, which takes a random walk on the space of redistricting plans by iteratively merging and splitting pairs of districts (tiles) at a time. Locked $t$-omino tilings are isolated states in the state space of ReCom. The constructions in this paper are counterexamples to the meta-conjecture that ReCom is irreducible on graphs of practical interest.

Abstract:We analyze domino tilings of the two-periodic Aztec diamond by means of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials that we obtain from a reformulation of the Aztec diamond as a non-intersecting path model with periodic transition matrices. In a more general framework we express the correlation kernel for the underlying determinantal point process as a double contour integral that contains the reproducing kernel of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials. We use the Riemann-Hilbert problem to simplify this formula for the case of the two-periodic Aztec diamond. In the large size limit we recover the three phases of the model known as solid, liquid and gas. We describe fine asymptotics for the gas phase and at the cusp points of the liquid-gas boundary, thereby complementing and extending results of Chhita and Johansson.

Abstract:Consider a Voronoi tiling of the Euclidean space based on a realization of a inhomogeneous Poisson random set. A Voronoi polyomino is a finite and connected union of Voronoi tiles. In this paper we provide tail bounds for the number of boxes that are intersected by a Voronoi polyomino, and vice-versa. These results will be crucial to analyze self-avoiding paths, greedy polyominoes and first-passage percolation models on Voronoi tilings and on the dual graph, named the Delaunay triangulation.

Abstract:Discrete and continuous non-intersecting random processes have given rise to critical "infinite dimensional diffusions", like the Airy process, the Pearcey process and variations thereof. It has been known that domino tilings of very large Aztec diamonds lead macroscopically to a disordered region within an inscribed ellipse (arctic circle in the homogeneous case), and a regular brick-like region outside the ellipse. The fluctuations near the ellipse, appropriately magnified and away from the boundary of the Aztec diamond, form an Airy process, run with time tangential to the boundary. This paper investigates the domino tiling of two overlapping Aztec diamonds; this situation also leads to non-intersecting random walks and an induced point process; this process is shown to be determinantal. In the large size limit, when the overlap is such that the two arctic ellipses for the single Aztec diamonds merely touch, a new critical process will appear near the point of osculation (tacnode), which is run with a time in the direction of the common tangent to the ellipses: this is the "tacnode process". It is also shown here that this tacnode process is universal: it coincides with the one found in the context of two groups of non-intersecting random walks or also Brownian motions, meeting momentarily.

Abstract:A bijection is given between the set of directed column-convex polyominoes on triangular and honeycomb lattices of area n and some families of restricted compositions. This is an analogous result to one given by Deutsch and Prodinger for polyominoes over square lattices. As a byproduct, we deduce new close forms for the number of hexagonal and triangular directed column-convex polyominoes of area n with k columns.

Abstract:Several articles deal with tilings with various shapes, and also a very frequent type of combinatorics is to examine the walks on graphs or on grids. We combine these two things and give the numbers of the shortest walks crossing the tiled $(1\times n)$ and $(2\times n)$ square grids by covering them with squares and dominoes. We describe these numbers not only recursively, but also as rational polynomial linear combinations of Fibonacci numbers.
