Abstract:The theoretical investigations at ITEP in the years 1945 − 1958 are reviewed. There are exposed the most important theoretical results, obtained in the following branches of physics: (1) the theory of nuclear reactors on thermal neutrons; (2) the hydrogen bomb project (“Tube” in USSR and “Classical Super” in USA); (3) radiation theory; (4) low temperature physics; (5) quantum electrodynamics and quantum field theories; (6) parity violation in weak interactions, the theory of β-decay and other weak processes; (7) strong interaction and nuclear physics. To the review are added the English translations of a few papers, originally published in Russian, but unknown (or almost unknown) to Western readers.

The course focussed on the free relativistic quantum fields, their interactions in the perturbative scattering framework, standard computations of QED processes, radiative corrections at 1-loop with renormalization and an introduction to the toolbox of path integrals.

Abstract:We present a conceptually clear introduction to quantum theory at a level suitable for exceptional high-school students. It is entirely self-contained and no university-level background knowledge is required. The lectures were given over four days, four hours each day, as part of the International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP) at Perimeter Institute, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. On the first day the students were given all the relevant mathematical background from linear algebra and probability theory. On the second day, we used the acquired mathematical tools to define the full quantum theory in the case of a finite Hilbert space and discuss some consequences such as entanglement, Bell's theorem and the uncertainty principle. Finally, on days three and four we presented an overview of advanced topics related to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, including canonical and path integral quantization, the quantum harmonic oscillator, quantum field theory, the Standard Model, and quantum gravity.

Abstract:In these lectures I will give an introduction to Feynman integrals. In the first part of the course I review the basics of the perturbative expansion in quantum field theories. In the second part of the course I will discuss more advanced topics: Mathematical aspects of loop integrals related to periods, shuffle algebras and multiple polylogarithms are covered as well as practical algorithms for evaluating Feynman integrals.

Abstract:This document consists of lecture notes for a graduate course, which focuses on the relations between Information Theory and Statistical Physics. The course is aimed at EE graduate students in the area of Communications and Information Theory, as well as to graduate students in Physics who have basic background in Information Theory. Strong emphasis is given to the analogy and parallelism between Information Theory and Statistical Physics, as well as to the insights, the analysis tools and techniques that can be borrowed from Statistical Physics and `imported' to certain problem areas in Information Theory. This is a research trend that has been very active in the last few decades, and the hope is that by exposing the student to the meeting points between these two disciplines, we will enhance his/her background and perspective to carry out research in the field. A short outline of the course is as follows: Introduction; Elementary Statistical Physics and its Relation to Information Theory; Analysis Tools in Statistical Physics; Systems of Interacting Particles and Phase Transitions; The Random Energy Model (REM) and Random Channel Coding; Additional Topics (optional).

Abstract:These are the notes for a minicourse taught at the 2022 ICTP summer school `Frontiers in Geometry and Topology'. The goal is to introduce families of Dirac operators and how they can be used to study interactions between geometry and topology. In particular, we discuss the index theorem for families of twisted Dirac operators, and its applications to metrics of positive scalar curvature and the three-dimensional Weinstein conjecture.

Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. Examples and comparisons with experimental data from LEP, HERA, and Tevatron are also covered.

Abstract:Dedicated to the centenary of the Ioffe Institute, the article contains the shortest review of scientific achievements of the theorists of the institute during this time. We concentrate mainly on research in the field of elementary particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear theory and atoms. To obtain very important scientific results became possible because outstanding theoreticians worked at this Institute. The high level of research persisted in spite of several mass moves of theorists - then to Kharkov, then to Moscow, then abroad. The author can testify to the atmosphere that reigned in the FTI in person, since he works at this institute since 1958. The article deals not only with research activity, but also with the famous physics schools and their outstanding cultural programs. We present also examples of extraordinary successful activity of theorists far beyond the field of their narrow specialization.
