Abstract:Based on the characteristics of College Physics Experiment,the teaching experience and current conditions of the department,this paper summarizes some reform measures from the teaching content to evaluation method,which will improve students' enthusiasm and initiative.As a result,the practice exhibits that the quality of Physics Experiment teaching constantly improved and students' creative thinking and practical ability..It is a very effective way to improve students' comprehensive quality.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a new university physics course designed to integrate physics, education, research, and community partnerships. The coordinated system of activities links the new course to local community efforts in pre-college education, university education, university outreach, and research on teaching and learning. As documented both by gains on conceptual surveys and by qualitative analyses of field-notes and audiotapes of class, the course facilitates student learning of physics, as well as student mastery of theories and practices of teaching and learning physics. Simultaneously, the course supports university efforts in community outreach and creates a rich environment for education research. The following narrative describes the motivation, structure, implementation, effectiveness, and potential for extending and sustaining this alternative model for university level science education.

Abstract:Recruiting and retaining highly qualified physics and physical science teachers is critical for maintaining America's global competitiveness. Unfortunately, only one third of the high school teachers in physics have a degree in physics and an even smaller number of physical science teachers in middle school have a good grasp of the scientific content they teach. Moreover, teachers often lack adequate pedagogical content knowledge to teach science effectively. Here, we discuss the development, implementation, and assessment of a course for science and engineering undergraduates designed to increase awareness and help them develop an interest and a deeper appreciation of the intellectual demands of physics teaching. The course focused on increasing student enthusiasm and confidence in teaching by providing well supported teaching opportunities and exposure to physics education research. The course assessment methods include 1) pre/post-test measures of attitude and expectations about science teaching, 2) self and peer evaluation of student teaching, 3) content-based pre/post-tests given to students who received instruction from the student teachers, and 4) audio-taped focus group discussions in the absence of the instructor and TA to evaluate student perspective on different aspects of the course and its impact.

Abstract:Abstract Physics curriculum of middle school and high school is based on the classic perspective of the 19th century and avoids dealing with the concept of observer (frame of reference). This by far holds regarding the curriculum of middle school, as even though it includes numerous observer-dependent concepts (location, trajectory, displacement, velocity, force, energy, work), it entirely excludes observer and observer dependent description of reality, and they are not taught as such. This tradition apparently draws on the assumption that students are incapable of learning observer dependent concepts because that requires an account with multiple answers valid for different observers. For that reason it is considered to be as a sort of advanced subject matter that should be treated at higher education level. We empirically checked this convention and discovered that 9 th grade students succeeded in applying frame of reference dependence to their accounts of daily experiences. For example, they were able to construct graphs expressing dependence of displacement, distance, and velocity on time in the perspective of different inertial frames of references. The results clearly indicate that integrated observer-dependent concepts in middle school promises substantial educational and pedagogical benefits (e.g. wider space of learning, intuitively and meaningful learning, students’ engagement and adequate image of science).

Abstract:In the symposium contributions we discuss research in physics education and the consequences of its results for physics teaching. The symposium presents four different aspects of physics teaching and learning, but all of them have research-based problem analysis in common. The problems analysed cover different aspects of the physics teaching-learning process. Innovative aspects such as the effect on learning of the integration of engineering projects in the science teaching process, the influence on the learning process of conceptions about science and attitudes, and aspects related to teaching contents and students' learning difficulties. Its conclusions are not merely intuitive proposals based on teaching experience, but on a careful planning of data collection, analysis of results and empirical basis

Abstract:This study examines the status of physics education in EU high schools, focusing on student understanding, curriculum organization, and knowledge transmission. The research aims to uncover potential gaps or opportunities for improvement in physics education in the European Union by looking at five important characteristics. Enhancing the overall educational experience and preparing students for future academic and professional pursuits requires an understanding of the quality of knowledge imparted to students, the efficacy of the curriculum in reaching educational goals, and the level of student comprehension. By offering insightful information, this study can guide instructional practices and policy in secondary schools across the European Union, potentially leading to significant improvements in physics education. A more thorough investigation of pedagogical strategies and their effects on student learning outcomes may benefit future studies in this field. Furthermore, examining any variations in physics education among the different EU member states may provide insightful comparative analysis.

Abstract:During recent collaboration with colleagues to revise our institution's general-education curriculum, I encountered many perceptions of what we mean by the Natural Sciences. I was surprised to find that perceptions of scientific pedagogy varied significantly among the scientific disciplines, especially concerning issues of philosophy of science and epistemology, manifested in the approaches to teaching theoretical concepts and their development. These realizations suggest that Physics occupies a singular role in college curricula, introducing students, even at the introductory level, to the acquisition of knowledge by theoretical means and the assessment of theory based on experimental evidence.

Abstract:Abstract Einsteinian physics represents a distinct paradigm shift compared to Newtonian physics. There is worldwide interest in introducing Einsteinian physics concepts early in school curriculum and trials have demonstrated that this is feasible. However introducing Einsteinian concepts from an early age requires more than suitable curriculum and teaching resources—it also requires teacher training and public support. This paper describes a pilot study used in an attempt to gauge public and teacher support. This entailed giving teachers, who included the entire staff of a primary school, and self-selected family groups an in-depth understanding of proposed curriculum content through public outreach and professional development workshops. We assessed their attitudes through questionnaires. Comments and opinions from the public were also collected from online resources. Results show overwhelming support from both teachers and the public. We assessed attitudes of children as well as adults and obtained opinions regarding the appropriate age at which to begin to introduce Einsteinian concepts.

Abstract:Abstract We present different approach in teaching physics for high-school students for various branches of physics, such as thermodynamics, electromagnetism, etc. When we use term “different”, we want to offer complementary approach to the traditional one. This approach involves bringing everyday situations [1], such as drinking tea in a desert, making coffee, etc., to the physics classroom context without theoretical teaching with formulae, laws, and definitions in the beginning or opening of the class. The idea is to develop logical concepts to prepare students for theoretical teaching and introduce formulae to them in order to have a complete frame of specific physical phenomena. Some classes include practical demonstrations [2] where students immerse in discussion and spontaneously involve in growing logical concepts needed for better adoption of definitions, laws, and formulae [3].

Abstract:In order to provide insight into current physics teaching practices and recommended reforms, we outline the history of physics education in the United States—and the accompanying pedagogical issues and debates—over the period 1860–2014. We identify key events, personalities, and issues for each of ten separate time periods, comparing and contrasting the outlooks and viewpoints of the different eras. This discussion should help physics educators to (1) become aware of previous research in physics education and of the major efforts to transform physics instruction that have taken place in the U.S., (2) place the national reform movements of today, as well as current physics education research, in the context of past efforts, and (3) evaluate the effectiveness of various education transformation efforts of the past, so as better to determine what reform methods might have the greatest chances of success in the future.

Abstract:Increasingly, the physics community is attending to issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), both in language and action. We are more publicly recognizing our individual responsibilities as physicists to address social injustice and systemic oppression. To this end, our physics classrooms are key levers for action. While we have made great strides in teaching traditional content and habits of mind useful in physics, if we expand our educational practices to more completely reflect the full range of what it means to be a physicist, we can make our classrooms more inclusive and equitable and support the needed diversification of our field. Ultimately how, and by whom, physics is enacted are part of the discipline itself and ought to be included in our teaching about the professional practices of physicists. We present two complementary approaches for broadening the focus of our classes, share models for enacting these in middle-division physics courses at two distinct institutional types, and provide evidence of positive impacts on students’ sense of identity and notions of what it means to be a physicist.

Abstract:The article deals with the theoretical aspects and practical implementation of the author's methodical approach to the systematic support and development of students' cognitive activity in teaching theoretical physics at a pedagogical university as a determining factor in improving the quality of the educational process. The author noted that the problem of increasing of the level and quality of fundamental training of pre-service physics teachers in accordance with the requirements of state regulatory documents in modern educational conditions is urgent, complex and multifaceted. The author analyzed the main factors of formation of stable internal motivation of students for active educational and cognitive activities. In accordance with the didactic principle of fundamentality and professional orientation, methodological principles of personally oriented teaching of theoretical physics at a pedagogical university is proposed. The author highlighted methodological aspects of formation, support and development of cognitive activity of students in the teaching of theoretical physics based on the application of active methods, methods and forms of learning, which encourage them to active thinking activity as much as possible, form a culture of mental work and independent practical actions. The list of active methods includes: creation of problematic situations, discussion of physical paradoxes, implementation of the principle of historicism in education, mathematical modeling of researched objects and solving of interesting non-standard problems, drawing up reference summaries, structural-logical diagrams, comparative tables based on literary sources; the use of modern ICT training and program-pedagogical tools of various didactic purposes (demonstration, simulation, modeling, control, testing), the use of interactive technologies (educational discussions, round tables, work in large and small groups) and methodological techniques of the professional direction («Acquaintance» . students' mini-lecture, «The game of misunderstanding», «Say it easier», «Hyperlinks»). Fundamental importance is attached to the solution of the mentioned problem of the teacher's own motivation to work and professional self-improvement, because, as its known, a real teacher prepares his whole life for his best lesson. Key words: professional competence of the future physics teacher, theoretical physics, cognitive activity.

Abstract:Preparing future physics teachers for the demanding nature of their profession is an important and complex endeavor. Teacher education systems must provide a structure for the coherent professional development of prospective teachers. Worldwide, physics teacher education is organized in different ways, but have to face similar challenges, like the relation between academic studies and practical preparation. To meet these challenges, it is worth taking look at different teacher education systems. In this chapter, we compare physics teacher education in two countries, representing two different educational traditions: Germany and the USA. Comparing different aspects of physics teacher education (standards, organization and institutionalization, content of teacher education, quality assurance), we describe both systems in their current state and why they are organized in the way they are. In doing so, we identify surprising commonalities but also different opportunities for both systems to learn from each other.

Abstract:Several years ago I reported a survey (Hake 1998a,b,c) of pre/post test data for 62 introductory physics courses enrolling a total of 6542 students. The present article provides a summary of that survey and presents fourteen lessons from the physics-education reform effort that may assist the general upgrading of education and science literacy.

Abstract:Abstract This work presents preliminary results of an investigation about the use of experimental activities, from problematization, in physics classes to primary school students. It is proposed initially a reflection about how experimental activities based on solving problems can contribute to the teaching of sciences from a broader perspective. Based on this reflection, three experimental activities are proposed, starting from problem situations, where are presented concepts of Physics involved in the siphon effect, in the shadows formation and the rigid body equilibrium, directed to Elementary School. The proposal of the activities aims to explore conceptual, social interaction, epistemological and relationship with daily life dimensions present in didactic approaches based on inquiry-science teaching. In an empirical essay, we present some results of a didactic action. The construction of data from discursive interactions was used as a methodological reference, and content analysis was used as a data analysis tool. In the analysis of the results, recorded episodes were verified with the production of small texts and pictorial representations (drawings) made by the students.

Abstract:This article describes an undergraduate physics module at a university in England that places year 3 student physicists in secondary school classrooms for a semester. This is done as a way of introducing them to the occupation of secondary physics teaching using a realistic job preview approach. The module helps the undergraduate students develop their communication and professional skills and supports the physics learning of pupils in the schools where they are placed. The perceptions of the participating students toward secondary school physics teaching are then investigated. Two themes emerged from this research: The difficulty of explaining physics concepts to children and the need to make school physics enjoyable.
