Abstract:In the symposium contributions we discuss research in physics education and the consequences of its results for physics teaching. The symposium presents four different aspects of physics teaching and learning, but all of them have research-based problem analysis in common. The problems analysed cover different aspects of the physics teaching-learning process. Innovative aspects such as the effect on learning of the integration of engineering projects in the science teaching process, the influence on the learning process of conceptions about science and attitudes, and aspects related to teaching contents and students' learning difficulties. Its conclusions are not merely intuitive proposals based on teaching experience, but on a careful planning of data collection, analysis of results and empirical basis

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper primarily explores how Physics Education Research (PER) influences decision-making and practices in physics teaching. Specifically, the paper analyzes issues in the process of teaching and learning physics through four different aspects, which include: 1. **Integration of Engineering Projects**: Investigates the impact of integrating engineering projects into science teaching, particularly how these projects promote student engagement and interest. 2. **Impact of Scientific Attitudes and Beliefs**: Compares the attitudes and beliefs towards science between physics and life sciences students at the beginning of their university studies and explores the implications of these differences on teaching. 3. **Teaching Content and Student Learning Difficulties**: Analyzes the difficulties students encounter in learning physics, especially the challenges in mathematical concepts, formal reasoning, and conceptual understanding. 4. **Rigor of Research Methods**: Emphasizes that research results are not merely intuitive suggestions based on teaching experience but are derived from carefully designed data collection, result analysis, and empirical foundations. ### Specific Description of Major Issues 1. **Integration of Engineering Projects**: - **Problem**: How can engineering projects effectively promote students' learning of physics? Can engineering projects increase student engagement and interest? - **Research Background**: Some studies suggest that integrating engineering projects into science teaching can enhance student engagement and support the learning of traditional science content. However, this learning does not always proceed smoothly and requires additional design and support. - **Research Findings**: When participating in engineering projects, students may focus more on achieving project goals while neglecting the related mathematical and scientific content. The research proposes an explanation that the fundamental inconsistency between engineering activities and physics learning leads to this "mixed success." 2. **Impact of Scientific Attitudes and Beliefs**: - **Problem**: What are the differences in attitudes and beliefs towards science between physics and life sciences students? What are the implications of these differences on teaching? - **Research Background**: The physics teaching community has long believed that students' scientific attitudes and beliefs significantly impact their learning process. In recent years, many standardized questionnaires have been used to assess students' scientific attitudes and beliefs. - **Research Findings**: Life sciences students are more inclined to adopt novice behaviors, such as "finding the correct equation and substituting it," when solving problems. This suggests that teachers need to anticipate and change this mindset to improve teaching quality. 3. **Teaching Content and Student Learning Difficulties**: - **Problem**: What are the main difficulties students encounter in learning physics? How can these difficulties be addressed? - **Research Background**: A traditional direction of physics education research is to explore the difficulties students face in learning physics, particularly in mathematical concepts, formal reasoning, and conceptual understanding. - **Research Findings**: Students show differences in their ability to answer questions on derivatives, integrals, and vectors in pure mathematics and physics contexts. Additionally, first-year university students encounter difficulties in understanding the moment of inertia of a rigid body rotating about a fixed axis. 4. **Rigor of Research Methods**: - **Problem**: How can the results of physics education research be ensured to have an empirical basis and scientific validity? - **Research Background**: The results of physics education research should not be based solely on intuitive suggestions from teaching experience but should be derived through rigorous research methods. - **Research Findings**: The research results indicate that reliable conclusions can be drawn through carefully designed data collection, result analysis, and empirical foundations, thereby providing scientific support for teaching practices. ### Summary This paper aims to reveal how physics education research influences teaching decision-making and practices through multi-faceted analysis, emphasizing the importance of rigor and empirical foundations in research methods. Through these studies, a better understanding of students' difficulties and needs in learning physics can be achieved, thereby improving teaching methods and enhancing teaching effectiveness.
