Abstract:We consider rigidity properties of compact symmetric spaces $X$ with metric $g_0$ of rank one. Suppose $g$ is another Riemannian metric on $X$ with sectional curvature $\kappa$ bounded by $0 \leq \kappa \leq 1$. If $g$ equals $g_0$ outside a convex proper subset of $X$, then $g$ is isometric with $g_0$. We also exhibit examples of surfaces showing that the nonnegativity of the curvature is needed. Our main result complements earlier results on other symmetric spaces by Gromov and Schroeder-Ziller.

Abstract:We discuss questions by Mostow \cite{Mo1}, Bers \cite{B} and Krushkal \cite{Kr1, Kr2} about uniqueness of a conformal or spherical CR structure on the sphere at infinity $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ of symmetric rank one space $H_\mathbb{F}^n$ over division algebra $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R}\,,\mathbb{C}\,,\mathbb{H}\,,\text{or}\,\, \mathbb{O} $ compatible with the action of a discrete group $G\subset\operatorname{Isom}H_\mathbb{F}^n$. Introducing a nilpotent Sierpiński carpet with a positive Lebesgue measure in the nilpotent geometry in $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n\setminus\{\infty\}$ and its stretching, we construct a non-rigid discrete $\mathbb{F}$-hyperbolic groups $G\subset\operatorname{Isom}H_\mathbb{F}^n$ whose non-trivial deformations are induced by $G$-equivariant homeomorphisms of the space. Here we consider two situations: either the limit set $\Lambda(G)$ is the whole sphere at infinity $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ or restrictions of such non-trivial deformations to components of the discontinuity set $\Omega(G)\subset \partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ are given by restrictions of $\mathbb{F}$-hyperbolic isometries. In both cases the demonstrated non-rigidity is related to non-ergodic dynamics of the discrete group action on the limit set which could be the whole sphere at infinity.

Limits of limit sets in rank-one symmetric spaces

Abstract:We consider the question of continuity of limit sets for sequences of geometrically finite subgroups of isometry groups of rank-one symmetric spaces, and prove analogues of classical (Kleinian) theorems in this context. In particular we show that, assuming strong convergence of the sequence of subgroups, the limit sets vary continuously with respect to Hausdorff distance, and if the sequence is weakly type-preserving, the sequence of Cannon-Thurston maps also converges uniformly to a limiting Cannon-Thurston map. Our approach uses the theory of extended geometrically finite representations, developed recently by the second author.

Abstract:For a polycyclic group $\Lambda$, $\text{rank} ( \Lambda )$ is defined as the number of $\mathbb{Z}$ factors in a polycyclic decomposition of $\Lambda$. For a finitely generated group $G$, $\text{rank} (G)$ is defined as the infimum of $ \text{rank} (\Lambda )$ among finite index polycyclic subgroups $\Lambda \leq G$. For a compact $\text{RCD} (K,N)$ space $(X,\mathsf{d}, \mathfrak{m})$ with $\text{diam} (X) \leq \varepsilon (K,N)$, the rank of $\pi_1(X)$ is at most $N$. In this note we show that in case of equality, $X$ is homeomorphic to an infranilmanifold, generalizing to the non-smooth setting a result by Kapovitch--Wilking. We also fill a gap in the proof that if $\pi_1(X) = \mathbb{Z}^N$, then $X$ is bi-Hölder homeomorphic to a flat torus (diffeomorphic in the smooth case).

Rankin-Selberg's local zeta integrals produce linear functionals on generic irreducible admissible smooth representations of $GL_n(k)\times GL_r(k)$, with certain invariance properties. Abstract:In this paper we study the rigidity of proper holomorphic maps $f\colon \Omega\to\Omega'$ between irreducible bounded symmetric domains $\Omega$ and $\Omega'$ with small rank differences: $2\leq \text{rank}(\Omega')< 2\,\text{rank}(\Omega)-1$. More precisely, if either $\Omega$ and $\Omega'$ have the same type or $\Omega$ is of type~III and $\Omega'$ is of type~I, then up to automorphisms, $f$ is of the form $f=\imath\circ F$, where $F = F_1\times F_2\colon \Omega\to \Omega_1'\times \Omega_2'$. Here $\Omega_1'$, $\Omega_2'$ are bounded symmetric domains, the map $F_1\colon \Omega \to \Omega_1'$ is a standard embedding, $F_2: \Omega \to \Omega_2'$, and $\imath\colon \Omega'_1\times \Omega'_2 \to \Omega'$ is a totally geodesic holomorphic isometric embedding. Moreover we show that, under the rank condition above, there exists no proper holomorphic map $f: \Omega \to \Omega'$ if $\Omega$ is of type~I and $\Omega'$ is of type~III, or $\Omega$ is of type~II and $\Omega'$ is either of type~I or III. By considering boundary values of proper holomorphic maps on maximal boundary components of $\Omega$, we construct rational maps between moduli spaces of subgrassmannians of compact duals of $\Omega$ and $\Omega'$, and induced CR-maps between CR-hypersurfaces of mixed signature, thereby forcing the moduli map to satisfy strong local differential-geometric constraints (or that such moduli maps do not exist), and complete the proofs from rigidity results on geometric substructures modeled on certain admissible pairs of rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number 1.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].
Rigidity of Symmetric Simplicial Complexes and the Lower Bound Theorem

Abstract:We show that, if $\Gamma$ is a point group of $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ of order two for some $k\geq 2$ and $\mathcal S$ is a $k$-pseudomanifold which has a free automorphism of order two, then either $\mathcal S$ has a $\Gamma$-symmetric infinitesimally rigid realisation in $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ or $k=2$ and $\Gamma$ is a half-turn rotation group.This verifies a conjecture made by Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zhang for the case when $\Gamma$ is a point-inversion group. Our result implies that Stanley's lower bound theorem for centrally symmetric polytopes extends to pseudomanifolds with a free simplicial involution, thus verifying (the inequality part) of another conjecture of Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zheng. Both results actually apply to a much larger class of simplicial complexes, namely the circuits of the simplicial matroid. The proof of our rigidity result adapts earlier ideas of Fogelsanger to the setting of symmetric simplicial complexes.

Abstract:In this article, we generalize Eberlein's Rigidity Theorem to the singular case, namely, one of the spaces is only assumed to be a CAT(0) topological manifold. As a corollary, we get that any compact irreducible but locally reducible locally symmetric space of noncompact type does not admit a nonpositively curved (in the Aleksandrov sense) piecewise Euclidean structure. Any hyperbolic manifold, on the other hand, does admit such a structure.

Abstract:We consider the relation between geometrically finite groups and their limit sets in infinite-dimensional hyperbolic space. Specifically, we show that a rigidity theorem of Susskind and Swarup (Am J Math 114(2):233–250, 1992) generalizes to infinite dimensions, while a stronger rigidity theorem of Yang and Jiang (Bull Aust Math Soc 82(1):1–9, 2010) does not.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the Riemannian and semi-Riemannian metrics on the base space of the Boothby-Wang fibration of a closed regular non-Sasakian -manifold. To this end, we study a natural class of deviations of the projection map from being (semi-)Riemannian submersions. We consider deviations that preserve the canonical bilegendrian structure on the given -manifold. This approach gives a unified framework to analyze rigidity results in both categories. As a consequence, in the Riemannian category, we obtain uniqueness of Sasakian structure on the given -manifold which orthogonalizes the canonical bilegendrian structure. In the semi-Riemannian category, we obtain an explicit description of the finitely many para-Sasakian structures which orthogonalize the canonical bilegendrian structure.

Abstract:Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor that are not conformally flat or locally symmetric, also known as ECS manifolds, have a natural local invariant, the rank, which equals 1 or 2, and is the dimension of a certain distinguished null parallel distribution $\,\mathcal{D}$. All known examples of compact ECS manifolds are of rank one and have dimensions greater than 4. We prove that a compact rank-one ECS manifold, if not locally homogeneous, replaced when necessary by a two-fold isometric covering, must be a bundle over the circle with leaves of $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ serving as the fibres. The same conclusion holds in the locally-homogeneous case if one assumes that $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ has at least one compact leaf. We also show that in the pseudo-Riemannian universal covering space of any compact rank-one ECS manifold the leaves of $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ are the factor manifolds of a global product decomposition.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss the local rigidity of Clifford-Klein forms of homogeneous spaces of 1-connected completely solvable Lie groups. In fact, we introduce a splitting of the local rigidity: vertical rigidity and horizontal rigidity. By using this splitting, we refine some existing results about the local rigidity and introduce a new approach to Baklouti's conjecture about the local rigidity.

Abstract:A CAT(0) space has rank at least n if every geodesic lies in an n -flat. Ballmann's Higher Rank Rigidity Conjecture predicts that a CAT(0) space of rank at least 2 with a geometric group action is rigid – isometric to a Riemannian symmetric space, a Euclidean building, or splits as a metric product. This paper is the first in a series motivated by Ballmann's conjecture. Here we prove that a CAT(0) space of rank at least n ≥2 is rigid if it contains a periodic n -flat and its Tits boundary has dimension ( n −1). This does not require a geometric group action. The result relies essentially on the study of flats which do not bound flat half-spaces – so-called Morse flats . We show that the Tits boundary ∂ T F of a periodic Morse n -flat F contains a regular point – a point with a Tits-neighborhood entirely contained in ∂ T F . More precisely, we show that the set of singular points in ∂ T F can be covered by finitely many round spheres of positive codimension.
