Abstract:We consider rigidity properties of compact symmetric spaces $X$ with metric $g_0$ of rank one. Suppose $g$ is another Riemannian metric on $X$ with sectional curvature $\kappa$ bounded by $0 \leq \kappa \leq 1$. If $g$ equals $g_0$ outside a convex proper subset of $X$, then $g$ is isometric with $g_0$. We also exhibit examples of surfaces showing that the nonnegativity of the curvature is needed. Our main result complements earlier results on other symmetric spaces by Gromov and Schroeder-Ziller.

Abstract:A symmetric ideal is an ideal in a polynomial ring which is stable under all permutations of the variables. In this paper we initiate a global study of zero-dimensional symmetric ideals. By this we mean a geometric study of the invariant Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ parametrizing symmetric subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose coordinate rings, as $S_n$-modules, are isomorphic to a given representation $\rho$. In the case that $\rho = M^\lambda$ is a permutation module corresponding to certain special types of partitions $\lambda$ of $n$, we prove that $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is irreducible or even smooth. We also prove irreducibility whenever $\dim \rho \leq 2n$ and the invariant Hilbert scheme is non-empty. In this same range, we classify all homogeneous symmetric ideals and decide which of these define singular points of $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. A central tool is the combinatorial theory of higher Specht polynomials.

Rigidity of locally symmetric rank one manifolds of infinite volume

Abstract:We discuss questions by Mostow \cite{Mo1}, Bers \cite{B} and Krushkal \cite{Kr1, Kr2} about uniqueness of a conformal or spherical CR structure on the sphere at infinity $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ of symmetric rank one space $H_\mathbb{F}^n$ over division algebra $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R}\,,\mathbb{C}\,,\mathbb{H}\,,\text{or}\,\, \mathbb{O} $ compatible with the action of a discrete group $G\subset\operatorname{Isom}H_\mathbb{F}^n$. Introducing a nilpotent Sierpiński carpet with a positive Lebesgue measure in the nilpotent geometry in $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n\setminus\{\infty\}$ and its stretching, we construct a non-rigid discrete $\mathbb{F}$-hyperbolic groups $G\subset\operatorname{Isom}H_\mathbb{F}^n$ whose non-trivial deformations are induced by $G$-equivariant homeomorphisms of the space. Here we consider two situations: either the limit set $\Lambda(G)$ is the whole sphere at infinity $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ or restrictions of such non-trivial deformations to components of the discontinuity set $\Omega(G)\subset \partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ are given by restrictions of $\mathbb{F}$-hyperbolic isometries. In both cases the demonstrated non-rigidity is related to non-ergodic dynamics of the discrete group action on the limit set which could be the whole sphere at infinity.

Abstract:A CAT(0) space has rank at least n if every geodesic lies in an n -flat. Ballmann's Higher Rank Rigidity Conjecture predicts that a CAT(0) space of rank at least 2 with a geometric group action is rigid – isometric to a Riemannian symmetric space, a Euclidean building, or splits as a metric product. This paper is the first in a series motivated by Ballmann's conjecture. Here we prove that a CAT(0) space of rank at least n ≥2 is rigid if it contains a periodic n -flat and its Tits boundary has dimension ( n −1). This does not require a geometric group action. The result relies essentially on the study of flats which do not bound flat half-spaces – so-called Morse flats . We show that the Tits boundary ∂ T F of a periodic Morse n -flat F contains a regular point – a point with a Tits-neighborhood entirely contained in ∂ T F . More precisely, we show that the set of singular points in ∂ T F can be covered by finitely many round spheres of positive codimension.

Abstract:We prove that the scalar curvature is a rigid invariant for complete maximal spacelike $p$-submanifolds in the pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{p,q}$. We characterize the $p$-submanifolds achieving the bound and study the hyperbolicity of maximal $p$-submanifolds of $\mathbb{H}^{p,q}$. In codimension $q=1$, we deduce a rigidity result concerning the Ricci curvature of maximal hypersurfaces in anti-de Sitter spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the rigidity of the perimeter inequality under Schwarz symmetrization. The term rigidity refers to the situation in which the equality cases are only obtained by translations of the symmetric set. In particular, we prove that the sufficient conditions for rigidity provided in M. Barchiesi, F. Cagnetti and N. Fusco [Stability of the Steiner symmetrization of convex sets. J. Eur. Math. Soc. 15 (2013), 1245-1278.] are also necessary.

Abstract:We study all four-dimensional simply-connected indecomposable non-semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces whose metric has signature (2,2). We present models and compute their isometry groups. We solve the problem of the existence or non-existence of compact quotients by properly acting discrete subgroups of the isometry group. This continues and completes earlier work by Maeta.

Generic infinitesimal rigidity for rotational groups in the plane

Abstract:In this paper we establish combinatorial characterisations of symmetry-generic infinitesimally rigid frameworks in the Euclidean plane for rotational groups of order 4 and 6, and of odd order between 5 and 1000, where a joint may lie at the centre of rotation. This extends the corresponding results for these groups in the free action case obtained by R. Ikeshita and S. Tanigawa in 2015, and our recent results for the reflection group and the rotational groups of order 2 and 3 in the non-free action case. The characterisations are given in terms of sparsity counts on the corresponding group-labelled quotient graphs, and are obtained via symmetry-adapted versions of recursive Henneberg-type graph constructions. For rotational groups of even order at least 8, we show that the sparsity counts alone are not sufficient for symmetry-generic infinitesimal rigidity.

Rigidity of symmetric frameworks with non-free group actions on the vertices

Abstract:For plane frameworks with reflection or rotational symmetries, where the group action is not necessarily free on the vertex set, we introduce a phase-symmetric orbit rigidity matrix for each irreducible representation of the group. We then use these generalised orbit rigidity matrices to provide necessary conditions for infinitesimal rigidity for frameworks that are symmetric with a cyclic group that acts freely or non-freely on the vertices. Moreover, for the reflection, the half-turn, and the three-fold rotational group in the plane, we establish complete combinatorial characterisations of symmetry-generic infinitesimally rigid frameworks. This extends well-known characterisations for these groups to the case when the group action is not necessarily free on the vertices. The presence of vertices that are fixed by non-trivial group elements requires the introduction of generalised versions of group-labelled quotient graphs leads to more refined types of combinatorial sparsity counts for characterising symmetry-generic infinitesimal rigidity.

Rigidity of Totally Geodesic Hypersurfaces in Negative Curvature

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed hyperbolic manifold containing a totally geodesic hypersurface $S$, and let $N$ be a closed Riemannian manifold homotopy equivalent to $M$ with sectional curvature bounded above by $-1$. Then it follows from the work of Besson-Courtois-Gallot that $\pi_1(S)$ can be represented by a hypersurface $S'$ in $N$ with volume less than or equal to that of $S$. We study the equality case: if $\pi_1(S)$ cannot be represented by a hypersurface $S'$ in $N$ with volume strictly smaller than that of $S$, then must $N$ be isometric to $M$? We show that many such $S$ are rigid in the sense that the answer to this question is positive. On the other hand, we construct examples of $S$ for which the answer is negative.

Abstract:We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.

Abstract:In this article, we generalize Eberlein's Rigidity Theorem to the singular case, namely, one of the spaces is only assumed to be a CAT(0) topological manifold. As a corollary, we get that any compact irreducible but locally reducible locally symmetric space of noncompact type does not admit a nonpositively curved (in the Aleksandrov sense) piecewise Euclidean structure. Any hyperbolic manifold, on the other hand, does admit such a structure.

Abstract:In this paper, we study hyperrigidity for $C^*$-algebras. The absence of the unit in hyperrigid set creates the possibility of the existence of $R$-dilations with non-isometric $R$. This gives rise to the study of when a hyperrigid set is annihilated by a state, or more generally, by a UCP map, which in turn, is closely related to the concept of rigidity at $0$ introduced by G. Salomon, who studied hyperrigid subsets of Cuntz-Krieger algebras. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of hyperrigid sets analogous to that obtained by Hansen and Pedersen for operator convex functions.

Abstract:Generalizing the foundational work of Grove and Searle, the second author proved upper bounds on the ranks of isometry groups of closed Riemannian manifolds with positive intermediate Ricci curvature and established some topological rigidity results in the case of maximal symmetry rank and positive second intermediate Ricci curvature. Here, we recover even stronger topological rigidity, including results for higher intermediate Ricci curvatures and for manifolds with nontrivial fundamental groups.
