Abstract:The symmetry-rank of a riemannian manifold is by definition the rank of its isometry group. We determine precisely which smooth closed manifolds admit a positively curved metric with maximal symmetry-rank.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to classify Riemannian manifolds of positive curvature with the maximum symmetric rank. Specifically, the author focuses on those Riemannian manifolds of positive curvature that have large symmetry groups, where "large" refers to the rank of the symmetry group. In the paper, the symmetric rank of a Riemannian manifold \(M\) is defined as \( \text{symrank}(M) = \text{rank} \, \text{Iso}(M) \), where \( \text{Iso}(M) \) is the isometry group of \(M\). The main result of the paper is a theorem, which shows that for an \(n\)-dimensional, closed, connected Riemannian manifold \(M\) with positive sectional curvature: 1. \( \text{symrank}(M) \leq \left\lfloor \frac{n + 1}{2} \right\rfloor \). 2. When the equality holds, \(M\) must be diffeomorphic to one of the sphere, the real projective space, the complex projective space or the lens space. To prove this result, the author uses convexity theory and critical point theory, applied to the singular orbit space of positive curvature. In addition, the paper also explores the existence and properties of the circle action (i.e., \(S^1\) action) in specific cases, especially when the codimension of the fixed - point set is 2. These studies provide key tools and insights for the final classification.
