Abstract:We prove that if a closed, smooth, simply-connected 4-manifold with a circle action admits an almost non-negatively curved sequence of invariant Riemannian metrics, then it also admits a non-negatively curved Riemannian metric invariant with respect to the same action. The same is shown for torus actions of higher rank, giving a classification of closed, smooth, simply-connected 4-manifolds of almost non-negative curvature under the assumption of torus symmetry.

Abstract:Kennard, Khalili Samani, and Searle showed that for a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus acting on a closed, positively curved Riemannian $n$-manifold, $M^{n}$, with a non-empty fixed point set for $n$ large enough and $r$ approximately half the dimension of $M$, then $M^n$ is homotopy equivalent to $S^n$, $\mathbb{R}\mathrm{P}^{n}$, $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^{\frac{n}{2}}$, or a lens space. In this paper, we lower $r$ to approximately $2n/5$ and show that we still obtain the same result.

Abstract:A Riemannian manifold is called almost positively curved if the set of points for which all 2-planes have positive sectional curvature is open and dense. We find three new examples of almost positively curved manifolds: $Sp(3)/Sp(1)^2$, and two circle quotients of $Sp(3)/Sp(1)^2$. We also show the quasi-positively curved metric of Tapp (J Differ Geom 65:273–287, 2003) on $Sp(n+1)/Sp(n-1) Sp(1)$ is not almost positively curved if $n\ge 3$.

Abstract:We extend the equivariant classification results of Escher and Searle for closed, simply connected, non-negatively curved Riemannian $n$-manifolds admitting isometric isotropy-maximal torus actions to the class of such manifolds admitting isometric strictly almost isotropy-maximal torus actions. In particular, we prove that such manifolds are equivariantly diffeomorphic to the free, linear quotient by a torus of a product of spheres of dimensions greater than or equal to three.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_{0}^n$ be the class of closed, simply-connected, non-negatively curved Riemannian manifolds admitting an isometric, effective, isotropy-maximal torus action. We prove that if $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$, then $M$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to the free linear quotient by a torus of a product of spheres of dimensions greater than or equal to three. As an immediate consequence, we prove the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for all $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$. Finally, we show the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for simply-connected, non-negatively curved manifolds holds for dimensions less than or equal to nine without assuming the torus action is almost isotropy-maximal or isotropy-maximal.

Abstract:We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.

Abstract:For a large class of 3-manifolds with taut foliations, we construct an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation preserving homeomorphisms which captures the transverse geometry of the leaves. This action is complementary to Thurston's universal circle. Applications include the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of every non-trivial surgery on the figure eight knot. Our techniques also apply to at least 2598 manifolds representing 44.7% of the non-L-space rational homology spheres in the Hodgson-Weeks census of small closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We prove that pseudoholomorphic curves intersect complex 2-cycles positively in almost complex 4-manifolds. This makes possible a general and conceptually simple proof that an almost complex 4-manifold with many curves admits a taming symplectic structure, as envisioned by Gromov. Furthermore, we prove that the positivity of intersections between pseudoholomorphic curves is stable, in a geometric sense.

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

Abstract:In [Bre19], Simon Brendle showed that any compact manifold of dimension $n\geq12$ with positive isotropic curvature and contains no nontrivial incompressible $(n-1)-$dimensional space form is diffeomorphic to a connected sum of finitely many spaces, each of which is a quotient of $S^n$ or $S^{n-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ by standard isometries. We show that this result is actually true for $n\geq9$.

Abstract:This paper gives the classifications of certain manifolds $\mathcal{M}$ of dimension $13$ up to diffeomorphism, homeomorphism, and homotopy equivalence, whose cohomology rings are isomorphic to $H^\ast(\mathrm{CP}^3\times S^7;\mathbb{Z})$. Moreover, we prove that either $\mathcal{M}$ or $\mathcal{M}\#\Sigma^{13}$ admits a metric of non-negative sectional curvature where $\Sigma^{13}$ is a certain exotic sphere of dimension 13.

Abstract:We express the total space of a principal circle bundle over a connected sum of two manifolds in terms of the total spaces of circle bundles over each summand, provided certain conditions hold. We then apply this result to provide sufficient conditions for the existence of free circle and torus actions on connected sums of products of spheres and obtain a topological classification of closed, simply-connected manifolds with a free cohomogeneity-four torus action. As a corollary, we obtain infinitely-many manifolds with Riemannian metrics of positive Ricci curvature and isometric torus actions.

Abstract:Cappelletti-Montano et al. [6] introduced and studied taut cosymplectic circles/spheres, which are the analogues in the cosymplectic setting of taut contact circles/spheres introduced and studied by Geiges-Gonzalo [11] , [13] , [14] . The main purpose of this paper is to introduce and study, in dimension three, the hyperbolic analogue in the cosymplectic setting. We give a characterization of a taut almost cosymplectic hyperbola, classify compact three-manifolds which admit a cosymplectic hyperbola, and give a complete classification of 3D Lie groups which admit a left invariant taut cosymplectic hyperbola/circle/hyperboloid/sphere. Besides, we introduce the notion of almost bi-contact metric structure. In particular, in dimension three, an almost bi-contact structure defines a taut almost cosymplectic hyperbolas or a taut almost cosymplectic circle. Then we characterize, in dimension three, the existence of an almost bi-contact metric structure, in particular with the associated 1-forms closed, and thus a complete classification of almost bi- α -coKähler three-manifolds with constant extrinsic curvature is established.

Abstract:We study complete, simply-connected manifolds with special holonomy that are toric with respect to their multi-moment maps. We consider the cases where there is a connected non-Abelian symmetry group containing the torus. For $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, we show that the only possibility are structures with a cohomogeneity-two action of $T^{3} \times \mathrm{SU}(2)$. We then specialise the analysis to holonomy $G_{2}$, to Calabi-Yau geometries in real dimension six and to hyperKähler four-manifolds. Finally, we consider weakly coherent triples on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathrm{SU}(2)$, and their extensions over singular orbits, to give local examples in the $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-case that have singular orbits where the stabiliser is of rank one.
