Abstract:Electron transport in thin metallic wires and films is strongly influenced by the quality of their surface. Weak localization and magnetoconductivity are also sensitive to the electron scattering at the edges of the sample. We study weak localization effects in a two-dimensional electron gas patterned in the form of a narrow quasi-one-dimensional channel in transverse magnetic field. The most general boundary conditions interpolating between the limits of mirror and diffuse edge scattering are assumed. We calculate magnetoconductivity for an arbitrary width of the sample including the cases of diffusive and ballistic lateral transport as well as the crossover between them. We find that in a broad range of parameters, the electron mobility is limited by the boundary roughness while the magnetotransport is only weakly influenced by the quality of the edges. In addition, we calculate magnetoconductivity for a metallic cylinder in the transverse field and a quasi-two-dimensional metallic film in the parallel field.

Conductance and persistent current in quasi-one-dimensional systems with grain boundaries: Effects of the strongly reflecting and columnar grains

Abstract:We study mesoscopic transport in the Q1D wires and rings made of a 2D conductor of width W and length L >> W. Our aim is to compare an impurity-free conductor with grain boundaries with a grain-free conductor with impurity disorder. A single grain boundary is modeled as a set of the 2D-$\delta$-function-like barriers positioned equidistantly on a straight line and disorder is emulated by a large number of such straight lines, intersecting the conductor with random orientation in random positions. The impurity disorder is modeled by the 2D $\delta$-barriers with the randomly chosen positions and signs. The electron transmission through the wires is calculated by the scattering-matrix method, and the Landauer conductance is obtained. We calculate the persistent current in the rings threaded by magnetic flux: We incorporate into the scattering-matrix method the flux-dependent cyclic boundary conditions and we introduce a trick allowing to study the persistent currents in rings of almost realistic size. We mainly focus on the numerical results for L much larger than the electron mean-free path, when the transport is diffusive. If the grain boundaries are weakly reflecting, the systems with grain boundaries show the same (mean) conductance and the same (typical) persistent current as the systems with impurities, and the results also agree with the single-particle theories treating disorder as a white-noise-like potential. If the grain boundaries are strongly reflecting, the typical persistent currents can be about three times larger than the results of the white-noise-based theory, thus resembling the experimental results of Jariwala et al. (PRL 2001). We extend our study to the 3D conductors with columnar grains. We find that the persistent current exceeds the white-noise-based result by another one order of magnitude, similarly as in the experiment of Chandrasekhar et al. (PRL 1991).

Abstract:We report an investigation of the dynamic conductance fluctuation of disordered mesoscopic conductors including one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and quantum dot systems. Our numerical results show that in the quasi-ballistic regime the average emittance is negative, indicating the expected inductive-like behavior. However, in the diffusive and localized regime, the average emittance is still negative. This disagrees qualitatively with the result obtained from random matrix theory. Our analysis suggests that this counterintuitive result is due to the appearance of non-diffusive elements in the system, the necklace states (or the precursor of necklace states in the diffusive regime) whose existence has been confirmed experimentally in an optical system.

Abstract:We study the magnetoconductance fluctuations of mesoscopic normal-metal/superconductor (NS) samples consisting of a gold-wire in contact with a niobium film. The magnetic field strength is varied over a wide range, including values that are larger than the upper critical field B_c2 of niobium. In agreement with recent theoretical predictions we find that in the NS sample the rms of the conductance fluctuations (CF) is by a factor of 2.8 +/- 0.4 larger than in the high field regime where the entire system is driven normal conducting. Further characteristics of the CF are discussed.

Abstract:When combining lumped mesoscopic electronic components to form a circuit, quantum fluctuations of electrical quantities lead to a non-linear electromagnetic interaction between the components that is not generally understood. The Landauer-Büttiker formalism that is frequently used to describe non-interacting coherent mesoscopic components is not directly suited to describe such circuits since it assumes perfect voltage bias, i.e. the absence of fluctuations. Here, we show that for short coherent conductors of arbitrary transmission, the Landauer-Büttiker formalism can be extended to take into account quantum voltage fluctuations similarly to what is done for tunnel junctions. The electrodynamics of the whole circuit is then formally worked out disregarding the non-Gaussianity of fluctuations. This reveals how the aforementioned non-linear interaction operates in short coherent conductors: voltage fluctuations induce a reduction of conductance through the phenomenon of dynamical Coulomb blockade but they also modify their internal density of states leading to an additional electrostatic modification of the transmission. Using this approach we can account quantitatively for conductance measurements performed on Quantum Point Contacts in series with impedances of the order of $R_K = h / e^2$. Our work should enable a better engineering of quantum circuits with targeted properties.

Abstract:Quantum coherence of electrons can produce striking behaviors in mesoscopic conductors. Although magnetic order can also strongly affect transport, the combination of coherence and magnetic order has been largely unexplored. Here, we examine quantum coherence-driven universal conductance fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic, canted antiferromagnetic, and ferromagnetic phases of a thin film of the topological material MnBi2Te4. In each magnetic phase, we extract a charge carrier phase coherence length of about 100 nm. The conductance magnetofingerprint is repeatable when sweeping applied magnetic field within one magnetic phase. Surprisingly, in the antiferromagnetic and canted antiferromagnetic phases, but not in the ferromagnetic phase, the magnetofingerprint depends on the direction of the field sweep. To explain our observations, we suggest that conductance fluctuation measurements are sensitive to the motion and nucleation of magnetic domain walls in MnBi2Te4.
Conductance fluctuations in graphene devices with superconducting contacts in different charge density regimes

Abstract:Conductions fluctuations (CF) are studied in single layer graphene devices with superconducting source and drain contacts made from aluminium. The CF are found to be enhanced by superconductivity by a factor of 1.4 to 2. This (near) doubling of the CF indicates that the phase coherence length is l_phi >= L/2. As compared to previous work, we find a relatively weak dependence of the CF on the gate voltage, and hence on the carrier density. We also demonstrate that whether the CF are larger or smaller at the charge neutrality point can be strongly dependent on the series resistance R_C, which needs to be subtracted.

Abstract:We study numerically conductance fluctuations near the integer quantum Hall effect plateau transition. The system is presumed to be in a mesoscopic regime, with phase coherence length comparable to the system size. We focus on a two-terminal conductance G for square samples, considering both periodic and open boundary conditions transverse to the current. At the plateau transition, G is broadly distributed, with a distribution function close to uniform on the interval between zero and one in units of e^2/h. Our results are consistent with a recent experiment by Cobden and Kogan on a mesoscopic quantum Hall effect sample.

Abstract:Time-reversal invariance and inversion symmetry are responsible for the topological band structure in Dirac semimetals. These symmetries can be broken by applying an external magnetic or electric field, resulting in fundamental changes to the ground state Hamiltonian and a topological phase transition. We probe these changes via the magnetic-field dependence and gate voltage-dependence of universal conductance fluctuations in top-gated nanowires of the prototypical Dirac semimetal Cd3As2. As the magnetic field is increased beyond the phase-breaking field, we find a factor of sqrt(2) reduction in the magnitude of the universal conductance fluctuations, in agreement with numerical calculations that study the effect of broken time reversal symmetry in a 3D Dirac semimetal. In contrast, the magnitude of the fluctuations increases monotonically as the chemical potential is gated away from the charge neutrality point. This effect cannot be attributed to broken inversion symmetry, but can be explained by Fermi surface anisotropy. The concurrence between experimental data and theory in our study provides unequivocal evidence that universal conductance fluctuations are the dominant source of intrinsic transport fluctuations in mesoscopic Cd3As2 devices and offers a promising general methodology for probing the effects of broken symmetry in topological quantum materials.
Andreev Conductance in Disordered SF Junctions with Spin-Orbit Scattering

Abstract:We calculate the conductance of a junction between a disordered superconductor and a very strong half-metallic ferromagnet admitting electrons with only one spin projection. A usual mechanism of Andreev reflection is strongly suppressed in this case since Cooper pairs are composed of electrons with opposite spins. However, this obstacle can be overcome if we take into account spin-orbit scattering inside the superconductor. Spin-orbit scattering induces a fluctuational (zero on average) spin-triplet component of the superconducting condensate, which is enough to establish Andreev transport into a strong ferromagnet. This remarkably simple mechanism is quite versatile and can explain long-range triplet proximity effect in a number of experimental setups. One particular application of the suggested effect is to measure the spin-orbit scattering time in disordered superconducting materials. The value of Andreev conductance strongly depends on the parameter and can be noticeable even in very disordered but relatively light metals like granular aluminum.

Magnetic impurities in a strongly coupled superconductor

Abstract:We revisit certain aspects of a problem concerning the influence of carrier scattering induced by magnetic impurities in metals on their superconducting properties. Superconductivity is assumed to be driven by strong electron-phonon interaction. We use the self-consistent solution of the Nagaoka equations for the scattering matrix together with the Migdal-Eliashberg theory of superconductivity to compute the energy of the in-gap bound states, superconducting critical temperature and tunneling density of states for a wide range of values of the Kondo temperature and impurity concentrations. It is found that similar to the case of the weak coupling (BCS) superconductors there is only one pair of the bound states inside the gap as well as re-entrant superconductivity for the case of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the conduction electrons and magnetic impurities. In agreement with the earlier studies we find that the gapless superconductivity can be realized which in the case of antiferromagnetic exchange requires much smaller impurity concentration. Surprisingly, in contrast with the weakly coupled superconductors we find that superconducting transition exhibits two critical temperatures for the ferromagnetic exchange coupling.

Abstract:We model the 2-probe conductance of a quantum point contact (QPC), in linear response. If the QPC is highly non-adiabatic or near to scatterers in the open reservoir regions, then the usual distinction between leads and reservoirs breaks down and a technique based on scattering theory in the full two-dimensional half-plane is more appropriate. Therefore we relate conductance to the transmission cross section for incident plane waves. This is equivalent to the usual Landauer formula using a radial partial-wave basis. We derive the result that an arbitrarily small (tunneling) QPC can reach a p-wave channel conductance of 2e^2/h when coupled to a suitable reflector. If two or more resonances coincide the total conductance can even exceed this. This relates to recent mesoscopic experiments in open geometries. We also discuss reciprocity of conductance, and the possibility of its breakdown in a proposed QPC for atom waves.

Abstract:In this paper we present and discuss our results for the conductance and conductance fluctuations of narrow quantum wires with two types of disorder: boundary roughness (hard wall confining potential) and islands of strongly scattering impurities within the bulk of the wire. We use a tight--binding Hamiltonian to describe the quantum wire, infinite perfect leads, a two--terminal Landauer--type formula for the conductance, and the recursive single-particle Green's function technique. We find that conductance quantization is easily destroyed by strong scattering. We also find that Anderson localization poses a serious restriction on the high carrier mobility predicted in quantum wires. Conductance fluctuations in narrow quantum wires are not, in general, universal (as in the metallic regime), but can be independent of the wire length over a short range of lengths.

Abstract:Quantum effects are expected to disappear in the short-wavelength, semiclassical limit. As a matter of fact, recent investigations of transport through quantum chaotic systems have demonstrated the exponential suppression of the weak localization corrections to the conductance and of the Fano factor for shot-noise when the Ehrenfest time exceeds the electronic dwell time. On the other hand, conductance fluctuations, an effect of quantum coherence, retain their universal value in the limit of the ratio of Ehrenfest time over dwell time to infinity, when the system is ideally coupled to external leads. Motivated by this intriguing result we investigate conductance fluctuations through quantum chaotic cavities coupled to external leads via (tunnel) barriers of arbitrary transparency. Using the trajectory-based semiclassical theory of transport, we find a linear Ehrenfest time-dependence of the conductance variance showing a nonmonotonous, sinusoidal behavior as a function of the transperancy. Most notably, we find an increase of the conductance fluctuations with the Ehrenfest time, above their universal value, for the transparency less than 0.5. These results, confirmed by numerical simulations, show that, contrarily to the common wisdom, effects of quantum coherence may increase in the semiclassical limit, under special circumstances.

Abstract:A nano-scale metallic grain (nanoparticle) with irregular boundaries in which the single-particle dynamics are chaotic is a zero-dimensional system described by the so-called universal Hamiltonian in the limit of a large number of electrons. The interaction part of this Hamiltonian includes a superconducting pairing term and a ferromagnetic exchange term. Spin-orbit scattering breaks spin symmetry and suppresses the exchange interaction term. Of particular interest is the fluctuation-dominated regime, typical of the smallest grains in the experiments, in which the bulk pairing gap is comparable to or smaller than the single-particle mean-level spacing, and the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) mean-field theory of superconductivity is no longer valid. Here we study the crossover between the BCS and fluctuation-dominated regimes in two limits. In the absence of spin-orbit scattering, the pairing and exchange interaction terms compete with each other. We describe the signatures of this competition in thermodynamic observables, the heat capacity and spin susceptibility. In the presence of strong spin-orbit scattering, the exchange interaction term can be ignored. We discuss how the magnetic-field response of discrete energy levels in such a nanoparticle is affected by pairing correlations. We identify signatures of pairing correlations in this response, which are detectable even in the fluctuation-dominated regime.

Potential Fluctuations in Heterostructure Devices

Abstract:Ionized donors in a doped heterostructure have random positions, which gives rise to a random potential with long-ranged fluctuations. This has a small effect on fast electrons, allowing high mobilities in two-dimensional electron gases, but becomes much more significant when the density of electrons is low. We have analysed the effect of this random potential using a semi-classical, self-consistent method to calculate the density of electrons. This includes a realistic potential from a patterned gate, and is followed by a quantum-mechanical calculation of the conductance.A nominally uniform two-dimensional electron gas becomes inhomogeneous as its average density is lowered, eventually breaking into isolated puddles and undergoing a classical metal-insulator transition. A quantum wire is strongly distorted by the random potential, which impedes ballistic propagation. The wire becomes discontinuous before it is narrow enough to support monomode propagation. The conductance of a short constriction or ‘point contact’ (0.2 μm) is well quantized. The guiding potential is rounded, suppressing resonances within the constriction. Quantization in a longer constriction (0.6 μm) is spoiled by scattering from the random potential. These results agree well with experiments by G.L. Timp et al.
"Creeping conductance" in nonstationary granular systems and artificial arrays

Abstract:We consider a nonstationary array of conductors, connected by resistances that fluctuate with time. The charge transfer between a particular pair of conductors is supposed to be dominated by "electrical breakdowns" -- the moments when the corresponding resistance is close to zero. An amount of charge, transferred during a particular breakdown, is controlled by the condition of minimum for the electrostatic energy of the system. We find the conductivity, relaxation rate, and fluctuations for such a system within the "classical approximation", valid, if the typical transferred charge is large compared to $e$. We discuss possible realizations of the model for colloidal systems and arrays of polymer-linked grains.

Abstract:We measured the conductance fluctuation of bi- and trilayer graphene devices prepared on mechanical exfoliated graphene by an all-dry, lithography-free process using an ultrathin quartz filament as a shadow mask. Reproducible fluctuations in conductance as a function of applied gate voltage or magnetic field were found. As the gate voltage was tuned so that the graphene device was pushed to the charge neutral point, the amplitude of the conductance fluctuation was found to be suppressed quickly from a value consistent with universal conductance fluctuation when the devices were still well within weakly disordered regime. The possible physical origins of the suppression are discussed.
