Abstract:In the oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA), increasing temperature leads to increased conversion accompanied by decreased selectivity to MA; this trade-off effect between selectivity and conversion of catalysts is important in maximizing the MA yield. The relationship between the structure and the catalytic performance is investigated in detail to understand the effects of the nature of the catalyst on the temperature sensitivity of its performance, which are neglected in the literature. The analysis of the studied industrial catalysts reveals differences in the temperature sensitivity, surface P/V ratio, and the nature and amount of V5+ species. Furthermore, a series of catalysts with different P/V ratios and different V5+ species is prepared to confirm the different influences of structural features on the temperature sensitivity of the catalytic performance. The results suggest that the surface P/V ratio is negatively correlated to the temperature sensitivity of n-butane conversion and MA selectivity, and isolated V5+ species contribute to the low-temperature sensitivity of MA selectivity while affecting the temperature sensitivity of n-butane conversion to a lesser extent. The structural characteristics of VPO catalysts suitable for partial oxidation of n-butane to MA in industrial processes are proposed, which provide theoretical guidance for the development of catalysts.

Abstract:n-Butane selective oxidation to maleic anhydride on VPO catalyst is the only industrialized selective oxidation reaction of light alkanes. The catalytic mechanism and reaction network are introduced. The research progress of reaction kinetics at home and abroad is reviewed. Based on continuous knowledge of reaction mechanism and the integrity of the kinetics model, the development of reaction kinetics is divided into three periods for the first time, that is, the exploration period, the forming period and the further developing period. The features and the typical models of every period are introduced. The feature of the exploration period is that the model only takes reactants' adsorption behavior on the catalyst surface into account. The feature of the forming period is that the product inhibition on the reaction is taken fully into account. The feature of the further developing period is that the oxidation degree of the catalyst with time changes and conversion among different forms of oxygen is brought into the dynamic model. Finally, we point out that the research of n-butane selective oxidation reaction kinetics will focus on the research of the interaction between kinetics and transfer process in the perspective of space-time multiscale.

Abstract:VOx catalysts supported on SBA-15 with and without MgO modification were prepared and characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, XRD, HRTEM, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD and XPS. Compared to the VOx/SBA-15 catalyst, the VOx/MgO/SBA-15 ones exhibit much higher C4-olefins selectivity and yield in the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the rise in VOx reducibility as well as to the relatively lower acidity of the MgO-modified SBA-15 materials.

Abstract:Vanadium–magnesium oxide (VMgO) catalysts have been prepared, characterized and tested in the ODH of n-butane. The catalysts were prepared by two variations of the wet-impregnation method using aqueous ammonium metavanadate or organically-based methanolic vanadyl acetylacetonate solutions. The catalyst surface area depends on the vanadium content and the preparation method. Catalyst characterization (i.e. XRD, 51V NMR, FTIR, LRS) results indicate the presence of poor crystalline Mg-orthovanadate (Mg3V2O8), while the presence of other Mg-vanadates is not clear. Oxygen isotopic-exchange experiments on VMgO catalysts indicate an R2 process: [18O2+216O2−(s)→(18O18O16O16O)4−(s)→218O2−(s)+16O2(g)] at temperatures higher than 1023K, while an R0-type [18O2(g)+16O2(g)→216O18O(g)] is observed at 823K, as a consequence of a small activity for homophase isotopic. Both the catalytic activity and the selectivity to oxydehydrogenation products depend on the vanadium content but is independent on the catalyst preparation method. This behavior is observed in the ODH of n-butane with both O2 and N2O. However, while conversion of n-butane was higher when using O2 as oxidant, the selectivity to C4-olefins was higher with N2O as oxidant. Pulse experiments show that prereduced surfaces are not effective in producing olefins while selective catalysts are achieved with preoxidized surface. A mechanism for the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane is proposed.

Abstract:Structural distortion has been demonstrated to regulate lattice oxygen activity, but its precise regulation has always been a thorny problem, especially for the oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons. Herein, by synthesizing a series of V-doped Bi2MoO6 catalysts, mechanistic insight into the effect of structural distortion on the catalytic activity of oxidative dehydrogenation of 1-butene was provided. Comprehensive characterizations and kinetics tests revealed that the V-doped Bi2MoO6-induced active lattice oxygen initiates 1-butene activation by abstracting the C-H bond, which is a rate-determining step. Combined with density functional theory results, an overwhelming effect of the bond length between Mo and apical oxygen atom in the MoO6 octahedron on lattice oxygen activation and butadiene formation pathway was proposed. The stretching Mo-Oapical bond elicited by V doping enhances the abstraction of hydrogen and accelerates the redox cycle. The sample with a 5% V content possesses the maximum Mo-Oapical bond length, enabling superior catalytic performance at an 87.6% 1,3-butadiene yield.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane was investigated over VMgO mixed oxide and pure magnesium ortho- and pyrovanadate catalysts. The formulation containing 30wt% V2O5 and consisting of the Mg3(VO4)2 and MgO crystal phases is more selective than the pure Mg3(VO4)2, while the Mg2V2O7 phase is the least selective. The selectivity to butenes and butadiene increases with the reaction temperature and the feed molar ratio of butane/oxygen. Addition of water tends to decrease the conversion of butane and enhances the oxydehydrogenation product selectivity. The relative importance of the primary and secondary paths of the reaction network was analyzed by the method of addition of intermediate products.

Abstract:Mesoporous VOx/SBA-15 catalysts with different V contents were evaluated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane and characterized by N2 adsorption, XRD, HRTEM, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, and EPR techniques. Compared to conventional V2O5/SiO2 catalysts, the VOx/SBA-15 catalysts showed better performance. The good performance can be attributed to the good dispersion of V species, presence of V4+ species and the pore structure.

Abstract:Promoting effects of Mg in heterogeneous Mo/HBeta-Al2O3 catalyst have been carefully studied for cross-metathesis of ethene and butene-2 to propene. The catalyst shows good stability with Mg content in the range of 1-2 wt%. Such effect may be attributed to the elimination of weak acid sites through introduction of Mg which suppresses the side olefin oligomerization reaction, as evidenced from NH3-TPD and H-1 MAS NMR results. Addition of more Mg content to 3 wt% may change the state and reducibility of Mo species, as indicated from the UV-vis. UV-Raman and H-2-TPR measurements. The increasing difficulty for the reduction of Mo(VI) species is closely related with the poor performance of 3 wt% Mg-4Mo/HBeta-30% Al2O3 catalyst in the metathesis reaction. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The crystal facet effect is a critical factor for catalytic reactions on metal oxides due to the different atomic arrangements and physicochemical properties of diverse facets. Based on a series of combined experimental and theoretical measurements, this work investigates facet-dependent oxygen mobility and reaction pathways for the oxidation dehydrogenation (ODH) of 1-butene to 1,3-butadiene on Bi2MoO6, which exposes the {001} and {010} facets (BMO-001 and BMO-010). The results show that the oxygen mobility of BMO-001 overwhelmingly outperforms that of BMO-010, reflecting the better capacities for selective abstraction of H from 1-butene, oxygen replenishment, and bulk lattice oxygen migration. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the rate-determining step on the {001} facet is the abstraction of the first H in 1-butene and the abstraction of the second H on the {010} facet. The existence of the [Bi2O2]2+ layer provides a favorable channel with a low-energy barrier for bulk lattice oxygen migration toward the {001} facet. Besides, complex side reactions occur on the {010} facet, including the nonselective oxidation of 1-butene, aromatization of 1-butene, and the generation of CO and subsequent formates. The total oxidation and decomposition of byproducts result in extra CO2 formation pathways. Lattice and gaseous oxygen play different roles in the above reactions. The superior oxygen mobility contributes to the high 1,3-butadiene yield for BMO-001, while the extra CO2 formation pathways lead to an abnormally high CO2 yield for BMO-010. The generated aromatic coke and formates affect the catalytic stability of BMO-010. The facet-dependent oxygen mobility and reaction pathways result in a distinct catalytic performance for 1-butene ODH.

Abstract:BiMoLax oxide catalysts with a variation of lanthanum component were prepared by a co-precipitation method, and applied to the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of 1-butene to 1,3-butadiene (BD). The results reveal that the lanthanum content has significant effects on the catalyst performance. BiMoLa0.2 exhibits the superior activity and stability during the 100h test. H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), 1-Butene temperature-programmed re-oxidation (TPRO) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) characterization show that the oxygen mobility and the adsorption ability of 1-butene of catalysts are two crucial factors determining catalytic performance in ODH reaction. The kinetics analysis finds that the ODH reaction over BiMoLa0.2 can occur more easily.

Olefin Metathesis over Heterogeneous Catalysts: Interfacial Interaction Between Mo Species and a Hβ−Al2O3 Composite Support

Abstract:The effect of molybdenum content on the structure and performance of Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts in olefin metathesis was examined. The optimal performance was obtained with a catalyst of 4-6 wt % Mo on a composite support of 70% H beta zeolite and 30% Al2O3. The interfacial interaction between the Mo species and the H beta-Al2O3 composite support was carefully studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy. XRD and N-2 adsorption results indicate that some interactions may occur between the Mo species and the composite support during the sample preparation. Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra show that this kind of interaction becomes more severe and leads to the dealumination of the framework and subsequent appearance of aluminum molybdate with increasing Mo loadings. Two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR spectra further demonstrate that the framework Al on H beta zeolite at the specific T sites could be preferentially extracted upon Mo loading, which may result in the appropriate Bronsted acidity on the support as evidenced by the quantitative H-1 MAS NMR measurements. A moderate interaction of Mo species with the support and the proper acidity may be advantageous for the cross-metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene over heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Aiming at a catalyst with improved catalytic properties in the oxidation of isobutane and isobutene to methacrolein and methacrylic acid, a novel MoVNb(Te) mixed oxide catalyst was synthesized. Rietveld analysis revealed that the crystal structure is well distinguishable from the known MoVTeNb mixed oxide catalyst used in the (amm-)oxidation of C3 hydrocarbons. In the conversion of isobutane, activity as well as selectivities to methacrolein and methacrylic acid were low, and the dehydrogenation of isobutane to isobutene was found to be rate determining. However, the novel catalyst is highly suitable for the partial oxidation of isobutene. While selectivity to methacrolein is comparable to that reported for other catalysts, the activity is superior, resulting in very high space-time-yields at temperatures up to 420 °C. The novel mixed oxide is a Mars van Krevelen-type catalyst. Excess oxygen in the feed is required to ensure optimum performance.

Abstract:Reaction network analysis of the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) reaction of isobutane over model carbon catalysts with tailored open-edge graphitic structure and quinone-type oxygenated functionalities was used to identify the selective pathways for the formation of isobutene. Carbon-based materials have been widely used in catalysis, but the active sites are not well-understood due to the complexity of the carbon structure. Correct identification of these sites is essential for learning how to manipulate material structure to achieve high catalytic yields of the desired products. In this study, we created model catalysts with controllable surface concentration of oxygen based on graphitized mesoporous carbon (GMC). Our studies reveal that the ODH reaction of isobutane on carbon catalysts is a parallel-consecutive pathway with partial oxidative dehydrogenation for the formation of isobutene and deep oxidation pathway for the direct formation of CO and CO2 from isobutane. These two pathways show different dependence on the quinone-type oxygen sites: the rate constant leading to the desired partial oxidation product does not show a strong correlation to the density of the oxygen sites, whereas the rate constant leading to the unselective COx products increases continuously with the density of oxygen sites. Abstract:AbstractThe catalytic activity of a VOx/Al2O3 catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane is investigated. The effects of reaction temperature, oxygen to n-butane ratio and GHSV on the catalytic performance are examined and optimized. Interestingly, this simple catalyst gives good conversion and selectivity. Butane was 22–24 %, and the selectivity to C4 alkenes was 56 %, of which 20–22 % to 1,3-butadiene. Moreover, the catalyst is stable for at least 72 h on stream. Kinetic studies show that the activation barriers for the formation of (butene + butadiene), CO and CO2 amount to 70.2, 65 and 81.3 kJ/mol respectively.

Abstract:A comparative study of the catalytic performance of a selective V-Mg-O catalyst in the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane is presented using three different types of reactor: (i) an adiabatic fixed-bed reactor; (ii) a fluidized-bed reactor; and (iii) an in situ redox fluidized-bed reactor. The results obtained indicate that the in situ redox fluidized-bed reactor outperforms the conventional fixed- and fluidized-bed reactors, especially at high n-butane conversions. Thus, a selectivity to C4 olefins of 54% at n-butane conversions of 60% was achieved at 550°C using an in situ redox fluidized-bed reactor while selectivities to C4-olefins lower than 43% were obtained on the other reactor types under the same reaction conditions (isoconversion and reaction temperature).

Abstract:The utilization of lighter alkanes into useful chemical products is essential for modern chemistry and reducing the CO2 emission. Particularly, n-butane has gained special attention across the globe due to the abundant production of maleic anhydride (MA). Vanadium phosphorous oxide (VPO) is the most effective catalyst for selective oxidation of n-butane to MA so far. Interestingly, the VPO complex exists in more or less fifteen different structures, each one having distinct phase composition and exclusive surface morphology and physiochemical properties such as valence state, lattice oxygen, acidity etc., which relies on precursor preparation method and the activation conditions of catalysts. The catalytic performance of VPO catalyst is improved by adding different promoters or co-catalyst such as various metals dopants, or either introducing template or structural-directing agents. Meanwhile, new preparation strategies such as electrospinning, ball milling, hydrothermal, barothermal, ultrasound, microwave irradiation, calcination, sol–gel method and solvothermal synthesis are also employed for introducing improvement in catalytic performance. Research in above-mentioned different aspects will be ascribed in current review in addition to summarizing overall catalysis activity and final yield. To analyze the performance of the catalytic precursor, the reaction mechanism and reaction kinetics both are discussed in this review to help clarify the key issues such as strong exothermic reaction, phosphorus supplement, water supplement, deactivation, and air/n-butane pretreatment etc. related to the various industrial applications of VPO.

Abstract:The shape effect of γ-Bi2MoO6 catalyst on the selective oxidation of isobutene to methacrolein was investigated in terms of its predominantly exposed crystal facets and surface termination. γ-Bi2MoO6 nanosheets and microflowers, mainly exposing the {010} facet, were hydrothermally synthesized with the aid of sodium dodecyl sulfate and ethylene glycol, but the surface was terminated by molybdenum and bismuth species, respectively. γ-Bi2MoO6 nanosheets showed a significantly higher activity for the selective oxidation of isobutene to methacrolein than γ-Bi2MoO6 microflowers with an average isobutene conversion of 88% and a methacrolein selectivity of 67% within 12 hours, primarily because of the preferential termination of the reactive molybdenum species on the {010} facets.
