Abstract:n-Butane selective oxidation to maleic anhydride on VPO catalyst is the only industrialized selective oxidation reaction of light alkanes. The catalytic mechanism and reaction network are introduced. The research progress of reaction kinetics at home and abroad is reviewed. Based on continuous knowledge of reaction mechanism and the integrity of the kinetics model, the development of reaction kinetics is divided into three periods for the first time, that is, the exploration period, the forming period and the further developing period. The features and the typical models of every period are introduced. The feature of the exploration period is that the model only takes reactants' adsorption behavior on the catalyst surface into account. The feature of the forming period is that the product inhibition on the reaction is taken fully into account. The feature of the further developing period is that the oxidation degree of the catalyst with time changes and conversion among different forms of oxygen is brought into the dynamic model. Finally, we point out that the research of n-butane selective oxidation reaction kinetics will focus on the research of the interaction between kinetics and transfer process in the perspective of space-time multiscale.

Abstract:In the oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA), increasing temperature leads to increased conversion accompanied by decreased selectivity to MA; this trade-off effect between selectivity and conversion of catalysts is important in maximizing the MA yield. The relationship between the structure and the catalytic performance is investigated in detail to understand the effects of the nature of the catalyst on the temperature sensitivity of its performance, which are neglected in the literature. The analysis of the studied industrial catalysts reveals differences in the temperature sensitivity, surface P/V ratio, and the nature and amount of V5+ species. Furthermore, a series of catalysts with different P/V ratios and different V5+ species is prepared to confirm the different influences of structural features on the temperature sensitivity of the catalytic performance. The results suggest that the surface P/V ratio is negatively correlated to the temperature sensitivity of n-butane conversion and MA selectivity, and isolated V5+ species contribute to the low-temperature sensitivity of MA selectivity while affecting the temperature sensitivity of n-butane conversion to a lesser extent. The structural characteristics of VPO catalysts suitable for partial oxidation of n-butane to MA in industrial processes are proposed, which provide theoretical guidance for the development of catalysts.

Abstract:BiMoLax oxide catalysts with a variation of lanthanum component were prepared by a co-precipitation method, and applied to the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of 1-butene to 1,3-butadiene (BD). The results reveal that the lanthanum content has significant effects on the catalyst performance. BiMoLa0.2 exhibits the superior activity and stability during the 100h test. H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), 1-Butene temperature-programmed re-oxidation (TPRO) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) characterization show that the oxygen mobility and the adsorption ability of 1-butene of catalysts are two crucial factors determining catalytic performance in ODH reaction. The kinetics analysis finds that the ODH reaction over BiMoLa0.2 can occur more easily.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDOxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of 1-butene has been considered as a potential process for manufacturing 1,3-butadiene (BD). The introduction of metal oxides to pure bismuth molybdate, a promising catalyst for the ODH reaction, can be expected to improve the catalysts performance. In this work, multicomponent bismuth molybdate oxide (BiMoZrx) catalysts for ODH of 1-butene were prepared by a co-precipitation method with variation of zirconium content (x=0-0.5), and the influence of zirconium on catalytic performance was investigated. RESULTSThe zirconium content has a significant effect on the structure and performance of the catalyst. The conversion of 1-butene and the BD yield over BiMoZrx catalysts display volcano curves with respect to zirconium content. Among the catalysts tested, BiMoZr0.4 exhibits superior activity. CONCLUSION1-butene temperature-programmed re-oxidation (TPRO) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations demonstrate that zirconium content is related to the oxygen mobility of BiMoZrx catalysts, and oxygen mobility is a crucial factor determining catalytic performance in the ODH reaction. Abstract:The crystal facet effect is a critical factor for catalytic reactions on metal oxides due to the different atomic arrangements and physicochemical properties of diverse facets. Based on a series of combined experimental and theoretical measurements, this work investigates facet-dependent oxygen mobility and reaction pathways for the oxidation dehydrogenation (ODH) of 1-butene to 1,3-butadiene on Bi2MoO6, which exposes the {001} and {010} facets (BMO-001 and BMO-010). The results show that the oxygen mobility of BMO-001 overwhelmingly outperforms that of BMO-010, reflecting the better capacities for selective abstraction of H from 1-butene, oxygen replenishment, and bulk lattice oxygen migration. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the rate-determining step on the {001} facet is the abstraction of the first H in 1-butene and the abstraction of the second H on the {010} facet. The existence of the [Bi2O2]2+ layer provides a favorable channel with a low-energy barrier for bulk lattice oxygen migration toward the {001} facet. Besides, complex side reactions occur on the {010} facet, including the nonselective oxidation of 1-butene, aromatization of 1-butene, and the generation of CO and subsequent formates. The total oxidation and decomposition of byproducts result in extra CO2 formation pathways. Lattice and gaseous oxygen play different roles in the above reactions. The superior oxygen mobility contributes to the high 1,3-butadiene yield for BMO-001, while the extra CO2 formation pathways lead to an abnormally high CO2 yield for BMO-010. The generated aromatic coke and formates affect the catalytic stability of BMO-010. The facet-dependent oxygen mobility and reaction pathways result in a distinct catalytic performance for 1-butene ODH.

Abstract:Structural distortion has been demonstrated to regulate lattice oxygen activity, but its precise regulation has always been a thorny problem, especially for the oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons. Herein, by synthesizing a series of V-doped Bi2MoO6 catalysts, mechanistic insight into the effect of structural distortion on the catalytic activity of oxidative dehydrogenation of 1-butene was provided. Comprehensive characterizations and kinetics tests revealed that the V-doped Bi2MoO6-induced active lattice oxygen initiates 1-butene activation by abstracting the C-H bond, which is a rate-determining step. Combined with density functional theory results, an overwhelming effect of the bond length between Mo and apical oxygen atom in the MoO6 octahedron on lattice oxygen activation and butadiene formation pathway was proposed. The stretching Mo-Oapical bond elicited by V doping enhances the abstraction of hydrogen and accelerates the redox cycle. The sample with a 5% V content possesses the maximum Mo-Oapical bond length, enabling superior catalytic performance at an 87.6% 1,3-butadiene yield.

Abstract:Vanadium–magnesium oxide (VMgO) catalysts have been prepared, characterized and tested in the ODH of n-butane. The catalysts were prepared by two variations of the wet-impregnation method using aqueous ammonium metavanadate or organically-based methanolic vanadyl acetylacetonate solutions. The catalyst surface area depends on the vanadium content and the preparation method. Catalyst characterization (i.e. XRD, 51V NMR, FTIR, LRS) results indicate the presence of poor crystalline Mg-orthovanadate (Mg3V2O8), while the presence of other Mg-vanadates is not clear. Oxygen isotopic-exchange experiments on VMgO catalysts indicate an R2 process: [18O2+216O2−(s)→(18O18O16O16O)4−(s)→218O2−(s)+16O2(g)] at temperatures higher than 1023K, while an R0-type [18O2(g)+16O2(g)→216O18O(g)] is observed at 823K, as a consequence of a small activity for homophase isotopic. Both the catalytic activity and the selectivity to oxydehydrogenation products depend on the vanadium content but is independent on the catalyst preparation method. This behavior is observed in the ODH of n-butane with both O2 and N2O. However, while conversion of n-butane was higher when using O2 as oxidant, the selectivity to C4-olefins was higher with N2O as oxidant. Pulse experiments show that prereduced surfaces are not effective in producing olefins while selective catalysts are achieved with preoxidized surface. A mechanism for the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane is proposed.

Abstract:Mesoporous VOx/SBA-15 catalysts with different V contents were evaluated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane and characterized by N2 adsorption, XRD, HRTEM, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, and EPR techniques. Compared to conventional V2O5/SiO2 catalysts, the VOx/SBA-15 catalysts showed better performance. The good performance can be attributed to the good dispersion of V species, presence of V4+ species and the pore structure.

Abstract:VOx catalysts supported on SBA-15 with and without MgO modification were prepared and characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, XRD, HRTEM, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD and XPS. Compared to the VOx/SBA-15 catalyst, the VOx/MgO/SBA-15 ones exhibit much higher C4-olefins selectivity and yield in the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the rise in VOx reducibility as well as to the relatively lower acidity of the MgO-modified SBA-15 materials.

Abstract:This paper describes the observation of an irregular decrease in 1-butene conversion during oxidative dehydrogenation over ZnFe2O4 in the production of 1,3-butadiene upon increasing the reaction temperature above 400 degrees C. Mono and multi-pulse adsorption and reoxidation were developed to determine the reaction mechanism that led to this phenomenon. Adsorbed species were found to be generated by 1-butene adsorption, which blocked the active sites, and with higher reaction temperatures, the surface reconstruction of the catalyst could lead to catalyst deactivation. Temperature-programmed oxidation revealed the correlation between different adsorbed species and the corresponding altered active sites. A temperature-induced surface reconstruction mechanism to explain the possible deactivation was then proposed and confirmed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The original spinel surface structure of the catalyst was transformed into cubic cells formed by Zn2+ and Fe2+ after the initiation of adsorption at high temperatures, which resulted in its final deactivation.
Promoting Effect of FeOx Addition on the Mechanochemically Prepared Vanadium-Based Catalyst for Real PCDD/Fs Removal and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:Industrial-use VOx-based catalysts usually have a higher active temperature window (> 250-300°C), which becomes a “bottleneck” for the practical application of PCDD/Fs catalytic degradation technology. In this work, VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalyst prepared via mechanochemically method was investigated for the catalytic removal of PCDD/Fs. The removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, pure PCDD/Fs gas generated in the lab, PCDD/Fs from actual flue gas, long-term were studied, and the degradation mechanism was explored using FTIR and TOFMS. The degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz and PCDD/Fs on VOx-FeOx/TiO2 were higher than that of VOx/TiO2 catalyst, and the optimal FeOx addition ratio was 3 wt.%. The characterization results show that the addition of FeOx can effectively improve the pore structure, surface acidity, and VOx dispersion of the catalyst, thus contributing to increasing the V5+ content and surface-active oxygen, which is conducive to the improvement of adsorption and redox performance of the catalyst. Under the actual MSWI (municipal solid waste incineration) flue gas, the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency over VTi-3Fe-MC maintained long-term stability, higher than 85% for 240 min. This result was not significantly reduced compared with the data obtained in the laboratory. According to the analysis results of intermediate products by FTIR and GC-TOFMS, it can be inferred that the epoxidation fracture of benzene ring is the rate-limiting step of dioxin catalytic degradation reaction. This work gives an in-depth view into the PCDD/Fs removal over VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalysts and could provide guidelines for the rational design of reliable catalysts for industrial applications.

Abstract:Iron and vanadate modified phosphotungstate was fabricated by Fe salt and vanadate incorporating into H3PW12O40. Its morphology, composition and structure were determined by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XPS. The catalytic performance of the prepared composite for selective oxidation of methanol to dimethoxymethane using molecular oxygen as oxidant was evaluated. A detail study on influence of key reaction parameters, involving the calcination temperature of the catalyst during the preparation, reaction time, temperature and pressure, and flow rate of O-2, methanol and N-2 on the reactivity and selectivity was optimized. The results showed that the composite was active and highly selective for methanol oxidation, giving ca. 70% conversion of methanol and > 96% selectivity to DMM. The adsorption behaviour of methanol on surface of the catalyst or various components composed of the catalyst was investigated by in situ DRIFTS technique to identify the active sites and further considering reaction mechanism. Moreover, the operating lifetime and stability of the catalyst was also discussed.

Abstract:The utilization of lighter alkanes into useful chemical products is essential for modern chemistry and reducing the CO2 emission. Particularly, n-butane has gained special attention across the globe due to the abundant production of maleic anhydride (MA). Vanadium phosphorous oxide (VPO) is the most effective catalyst for selective oxidation of n-butane to MA so far. Interestingly, the VPO complex exists in more or less fifteen different structures, each one having distinct phase composition and exclusive surface morphology and physiochemical properties such as valence state, lattice oxygen, acidity etc., which relies on precursor preparation method and the activation conditions of catalysts. The catalytic performance of VPO catalyst is improved by adding different promoters or co-catalyst such as various metals dopants, or either introducing template or structural-directing agents. Meanwhile, new preparation strategies such as electrospinning, ball milling, hydrothermal, barothermal, ultrasound, microwave irradiation, calcination, sol–gel method and solvothermal synthesis are also employed for introducing improvement in catalytic performance. Research in above-mentioned different aspects will be ascribed in current review in addition to summarizing overall catalysis activity and final yield. To analyze the performance of the catalytic precursor, the reaction mechanism and reaction kinetics both are discussed in this review to help clarify the key issues such as strong exothermic reaction, phosphorus supplement, water supplement, deactivation, and air/n-butane pretreatment etc. related to the various industrial applications of VPO.

Abstract:A series of vanadia catalysts supported on SBA-15 (V/SBA) with a vanadia (V) content ranging from 1% to 11% were prepared by an incipient wetness method. Their catalytic behavior in the dehydrogenation of isobutane to isobutene with CO2 was examined. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). It was found that these catalysts were effective for the dehydrogenation reaction, and the catalytic activity is correlated with the amount of dispersed vanadium species on the SBA-15 support. The 7% V/SBA catalyst shows the highest activity, which gives 40.8% isobutane conversion and 84.8% isobutene selectivity. The SBA-15-supported vanadia exhibits higher isobutane conversion and isobutene selectivity than the MCM-41-supported one.

Abstract:M1 phase of MoVNbTe oxide catalyst is a promising catalyst for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) process. Raising V5+ concentration in the catalyst is an effective way to improve the catalytic performance while thermal oxidation in air has limited effect on the increase of vanadium valence state. In this work, manganese is introduced into the catalyst system, acting as oxygen facilitator, making M1 oxidized by gas phase oxygen at lower temperature during the preparation process. The influence of manganese addition amount and combination method on catalyst activity is studied. BET, XPS, SEM, TEM, ICP, TPR, and TPD characterizations are performed to study the correlation between catalyst properties and catalytic performance. Corresponding to the valence state increment, the catalyst promoted by MnOx gives an improved catalytic performance, e.g., over 20% improvement in ODHE process at 400 degrees C based on the ethane conversion.
