Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a three-dimensional model for the evaporator of an ethylene loop heat pipe is developed using CFD method. The flow, heat transfer and phase change of ethylene in a cylindrical evaporator is investigated numerically. In the model of the wick of the evaporator, both the capillary force at the vapor-liquid interface and the flow resistance of the fluid in the porous medium are considered. Fluid-structure coupling heat transfer analysis is also incorporated in the evaporator model. The flow and thermal boundary conditions are determined according to previous experimental results. The shell of the evaporator is made of steel and the sintered nickel powder is used for the wick, whose porosity is 0.6 and the average diameter of the porous structure is 5 μm. The temperature, vapor-liquid phase and pressure distribution in the wick and vapor groove of the evaporator under heating power of 20 W to 60 W are investigated. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data. By introducing the capillary force at the two-phase interface, this model can better describe the vapor-liquid distribution in the wick of the cylindrical evaporator. The results may provide some guidance for optimizing the structural parameters of the loop heat pipe evaporator.

Abstract:This paper proposes an ejector-assisted copper-water loop heat pipe with a flat evaporator (ELHP) for applications in electronic cooling. In the ELHP, the ejector is used to remove the generated vapor in the compensation chamber due to heat leaks through the wick, which could eliminate the need for the subcooling liquid supplied to the compensation chamber and improve the loop heat pipe performances. The steady-state performance of ELHP is simulated based on an established mathematical model and compared with the basic loop heat pipe with a flat evaporator (BLHP). The simulation results show that the operating temperature of the ELHP can be lower than that of the BLHP under the same heat load condition. Since the working fluid subcooling zone in the ELHP condenser is not required, the total length of the pipe-in-pipe type condenser also can be decreased by 24.4-34.8% when compared with that of the BLHP under given operating conditions. In addition, the effects of the thickness of the wick, the total length of the condenser, the inner diameter of the vapor line and the mass flow rate and inlet temperature of the cooling water on the performances of the ELHP are also evaluated in this study. These simulation results indicate that the ELHP can achieve a better performance than BLHP, which could be beneficial to the applications in electronic cooling. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:<p>The dynamic evolution of vapor-liquid distribution in a porous wick coupled with the heat conduction in the evaporator casing of a loop heat pipe is numerically solved. The mathematical model is validated based on the experimental results issued from the literature. Both the transient and steady-state thermal behaviors of the evaporator are focused on, with the self-adjusting ability, evaporator temperature, thermal resistance, and parasitic heat leakage analysis as the evaluation indexes. The gradual invasion of the vapor region into the wick over time and the robust response of the evaporator temperature to varying heat loads are tracked. Additionally, the steady-state performance is explored to optimize the structural parameters, namely, the location of grooves, wick material and porosity, casing material, and fin ratio, through which the specific influences of each parameter are figured out. It is found that locating grooves in wick yields a 7.63°C lower evaporator temperature and a more uniform temperature distribution on the evaporator with a difference of 0.75°C than in casing at 140 W. Additionally, a 0.9 mm thick nickel layer with a porosity of 0.4 combined with a 4.1 mm nickel stainless steel layer with a porosity of 0.75 constitutes an optimized layered wick, which exhibits a 7.04°C lower evaporator temperature and a 0.05°C/W smaller thermal resistance than a single-structured stainless steel wick with a porosity of 0.75. Considering the heat transfer and flow pressure drop, the counterbalanced fin ratio range of 0.5~0.6 and the better thermal performance of copper casing are identified. The numerical results are expected to provide references for the evaporator structure optimization, laying a solid foundation for applying loop heat pipes to thermal control fields.</p>

Abstract:The heat and mass transfer in a loop heat pipe evaporator with microgrooves are investigated in a three-dimensional numerical model. The design of the microgroove wick must consider the pressure loss of the vapor. The simulation obtains the detailed pressure distribution of the vapor flow in the grooves. The simulated heat flux distribution in the evaporator revealed that the applied heat flux concentrates along the three-phase contact line (TPCL) within the casing, wick, and grooves. The effect of TPCL length was investigated in three microgroove wicks with circumferential and axial grooves and a classical wick with only axial grooves. The heat-transfer coefficient initially increased with TPCL length increasing, but thereafter decreased because when the TPCL becomes too long, a large pressure loss occurs in the grooves. The developed model was validated experimentally. In both the model and experiment, the heat-transfer coefficient was locally maximized at a certain TPCL length. The proposed method is expected to provide a simple approach for wick design; especially, the wick shape can be optimized merely by varying the TPCL length. The effect of thermal conductivity of the wick material is also discussed.

Abstract:A two-dimensional transient numerical model based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for the global evaporator of a capillary-pumped loop (CPL) is proposed to describe heat and mass transfer with evaporation in the porous wick, heat conduction in the cover plate, and heat transfer in the vapor groove. To indicate the stochastic phase distribution characteristics of most porous wick, the quartet structure generation set (QSGS) is introduced for generating more realistic microstructures of porous media. By using the present lattice Boltzmann algorithm along with the porous structure, the heat and mass transfer of an evaporator on pore scale can be predicted without resorting to any empirical parameters determined case by case. The energy equations for entire evaporator are solved as a conjugate problem, which are solved by means of a spatially varying relaxation time in the lattice Boltzmann model and the liquid flow is driven via the interfacial mass flux. A convective boundary condition considering the latent heat during the evaporation on the interface is introduced into the lattice Boltzmann model based on the nonequilibrium extrapolation rule. Especially, the bounce-back rule and the equilibrium rule of the LBM are, respectively, introduced to deal with the momentum boundary conditions inside the porous wick and on the evaporation interface in order to ensure the stability and the efficiency of the LBM model. Numerical results corresponding to different working conditions and different working fluids are presented, which provide guidance for the evaporator design of a CPL system.
Heat and Mass Transfer in the Porous Wick of a Capillary Evaporator

Abstract:Heat and mass transfer inside the porous wick of a capillary evaporator is studied using a mixed pore-network model. The impact of the thermal conductivity of the wick on the overheating limit (defined as the difference between the maximum temperature at the top of the metallic casing and the saturated temperature), breakthrough (which occurs when the vapor reaches the wick inlet) and the parasitic heat flux lost by conduction at the entrance of the wick (which decreases the efficiency of the evaporator) is investigated. The study suggests a bilayer wick as a possible better design to optimize the performance of the evaporator. With this design, the inlet layer is of low thermal conductivity with small pore size so as to reduce the parasitic heat flux. The inlet layer also plays a role of capillary lock limiting the risk of breakthrough. The second layer, right under the metallic casing, is more conductive with a high thermal conductivity and larger pores so as to limit the risk of overheating. It is shown that this design increases the range of heat loads which can be applied to the evaporator.

Abstract:With a specified pressure distribution, an analytical investigation was conducted to explore the flow and heat transfer characteristics in an evaporator porous wicking structure of a flat heat pipe. The boundary effect on the flow rate is more significant than the inertia, and both the boundary and inertia effects exert very little influence on fluid layer thickness and velocity distribution. Abstract:A dual-network model (DNM) representing the topological characteristics of both the pore space and solid fraction of a packed bed was developed to study coupled incompressible water flow and heat transport from the pore-scale to mesoscale (mu m-cm) with the consideration of temperature-dependent fluid viscosity. The DNM was validated and used to study the temperature and velocity at the pore scale and their effects on fluid flow and heat transfer. Then the pore volume of the DNM was varied to illustrate the effect of bed porosity on transport processes, quantifying the trade-off between flow conditions and heat transfer. This work demonstrates the ability of the DNM to simulate pore-scale fluid flow and heat transfer simultaneously, which can then be averaged over the entire simulation domain to approximate meso/macroscopic parameters efficiently in relation to the pore geometry.

Abstract:This article aims to comprehensively analyze the heat and mass transfer and fractal evaporative interface in porous media with different pore size distribution through experiments and simulations of water. Weierstrass-Mandelbrot(W-M) function is used to establish a fractal evaporative interface based on fractal dimension and scaling parameter, which are determined by parameters of pore. The evaporative interface at the pore level is observed in the experiment with aluminum and nickel porous media, which shows reliability of model. The simulation results reveal that when the mass flow rate enlarges, the average Nusselt number, RMS and STD gradually grow, and the average temperature, vapor volume fraction, and velocity reduce, which indicates better thermal protection. As the initial temperature of the bottom improves, the trends in these variables are opposite except for STD, which means more irregular of evaporative interface. These findings have potential applications in transpiration cooling with high temperature in aerospace field and technologies requiring a stable evaporative interface, such as seawater desalination.

Thermal Dynamics of Heat Pipes with Sub-Critical Nanopores

Abstract:Sub-critical nanopores are known to inhibit continuous evaporation within heat pipes, posing a challenge in understanding the limitations of nanopore size on wicking action. This study addresses this by systematically investigating the wicking capabilities in nanoscale heat pipes using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that temperature-induced flow in these heat pipes is primarily driven by surface interactions rather than traditional wicking action. Additionally, the water fill ratio and thermal gradient significantly influence the performance of these systems. These insights can substantially benefit heat transfer research, providing a foundation for improving thermal performance through nanoscale design innovations.

Abstract:The capillary pressure (Δ P cap ) and permeability ( K ) of porous wicks, both of which depend on the size of the flow channel, are crucial for the performance of heat transfer devices including loop heat pipes. However, the flow channel in actual porous wicks shrinks at the connective part between adjacent pores called the throat and does not have a constant size. The dominant flow channel size (average size or throat size) for Δ P cap and K remains unclear. To elucidate the dominant flow channel size, porous aluminum with constant pore size and various throat sizes was controllably fabricated by the space holder method using sodium chloride (NaCl) particles. Two types of pore size (simple pore size reflecting the space holder size and connectivity-reflected pore size) were characterized by X-ray computed tomography. The Δ P cap and K were evaluated by capillary rise tests using water. The average simple pore size was almost constant, but the average connectivity-reflected pore size changed depending on the porosity controlled by the amount of the NaCl space holder because the throat was enlarged, and the connectivity was improved by increasing porosity. It was clarified that Δ P cap changed depending on the average connectivity-reflected pore size regardless of the constant simple pore size. In contrast, K was determined by neither the simple nor connectivity-reflected pore sizes and could be dominated by local size around the throat. These results provide an insight into the design of optimal porous structure appropriate for porous wicks applied to heat transfer applications.

Abstract:The evaporators of heat pumps extract heat from the environment. To improve the heat pump performance in cold environments, evaporators must operate with small temperature drops of the heat source, which requires large flow rates of the secondary fluid. This paper discusses dimpled plate heat exchangers (DPHEs) with flexible flow section areas. The flow boiling of R410A is measured in six channels. The flow section area ratios of neighboring channels are 0.86-2.83. To analyze outlet superheat, the two-phase and dryout zones are distinguished using infrared measurement. The dryout zone is a function of the superheat and mass flux, which is quantified. The heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) increase with increasing mass fluxes and heat fluxes. Compared with experimental results from a large scope, the present data fall into the combined regimes of convective boiling and nucleate boiling. Smaller hydraulic diameters slightly enhance the heat transfer. The experimental HTCs are accurately predicted by a correlation of chevron plate heat exchangers (CPHEs). The performances of the DPHEs and CPHE are compared for small temperature drops in cold environments. The DPHEs have superior performance by mitigating the unbalance of mass fluxes. The typical overall heat transfer coefficient is improved by 62%. The improvement depends on the flow section area ratios.

Abstract:The pulsating heat pipe (PHP) is well known for its high heat transfer efficiency and has great potentiality for various heat transfer applications. However, the complex coupling and instability between thermodynamics and hydrodynamics makes the accurate prediction of PHPs extremely challenging. To address this challenge, more accurate two and three-dimensional modeling are required. Currently, the Lee model serves as the primary choice for simulating phase change model in PHPs. However, there is no consensus in the literature on the optimal choice of phase change coefficients in the Lee model. In this study, the visualization experiments and analytical investigations of a nitrogen flat-plate PHP were conducted to establish a numerical simulation model. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the PHP was developed using ANSYS Fluent. The evaporation and condensation coefficients in Lee model were transformed into coefficient magnitude and coefficient ratio, each of which was discussed separately. After comparing the simulation results with the experimental data, a correction factor related to filling ratio was introduced into the equation, which determines the coefficient ratio through gas-liquid density ratio. Finally, an analysis of the overall temperature and pressure fields was conducted.
Experimental Study on an Thermosyphon Loop with Bubble Pump Effect

Abstract:An advanced thermosyphon loop using bubble pump effect was proposed in order to meet the need of the chip heat dissipation at high heat flux.The experiment was conducted to investigate the heat transfer performance of the loop with deionized water as the working fluid at the heat load of 21-646 W and the corresponding heat flux of 1.67-51.4 W/cm2.The experimental results show that although the bubble pump effect will increase the heat transmission resistance and but it can effectively enhance the deionized water turbulence in evaporator cavities,leading to the increases in heat transfer capacity and the critical heat transfer heat flux.Moreover,the minimum thermal resistance was 0.11 ℃/W when the heat load was 646 W,and there was an optimum charging liquid level for the loop.In addition,the charging height was reasonable when the flow pattern was annular flow in the ascending tube,and the evaporation thermal resistance was major part of the overall thermal resistance.These results may be beneficial to further research on chip cooling.

Abstract:With the rapid development of electronic devices for more compact structure and rapidity speed, the traditional single-phase radiator cannot meet the demand of an increasing heat flux from the electronic components. The effects of inlet Reynolds number on the evaporative heat transfer of CO2 in a loop heat pipe evaporator are numerically investigated in this paper. The objective is to seek an achievable approach to enhance the heat-dissipating efficiency and provide a low operating temperature for the electronic components. The temperature of the bottom oscillates continuously during the evaporation process and is influenced by the vapor; the pattern of two-phase flow is quite different from single-phase flow. It is also found that the heat transfer coefficient of CO2 increases with the inlet Reynolds number largely.

Abstract:Microchannel heat exchangers find widespread use in household and automotive air conditioning due to their compact structure and high efficiency. However, two-phase refrigerant flow mal-distribution in microchannels limits their application. For the CO 2 heat pump, the performance reduction by flow mal-distribution could be as large as 20%. This study proposed an approach to mitigate flow mal-distribution by inserting a perforated tube into the header of a microchannel evaporator in CO 2 heat pump. Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the impact of perforated tube parameters and CO 2 inlet conditions on flow distribution. Results show a 24.4% increase in total non-uniformity (S) of flow distribution with a perforated tube. A higher number of openings and smaller diameters enhance uniformity, with the 10-hole, 2 mm diameter perforated tube proving most effective. Additionally, the most uniform flow distribution was achieved at an inlet CO 2 mass flow rate of 30 g/s and a vapor quality of 0.2. And the flat tubes with an insertion depth of 5 mm and a cross-section of 16 × 2 mm is the most beneficial for uniform flow distribution.

Abstract:The loop heat pipe (LHP) is a two-phase heat transfer device used for thermal management in applications like space, mobile, laptop, electronic cooling. In the present study, modeling and parametric analysis of LHP was done by applying energy balance approach at different sections using Dev-C++ software. The effects of various parameters like sink temperature (5 °C, 10 °C, 22 °C), condenser effectiveness (0.4–0.9), vapor line diameter (0.0043 m, 0.0053 m, 0.0063 m), wick thickness (0.0073 m, 0.0048 m) and wick porosity (40%, 60%, 80%) were studied on the performance of LHP. The results obtained were validated with the results published in the literature. With increase in condenser effectiveness from 0.40 to 0.90, steady state operating temperature got decreased by 4.5 °C at a heat load of 600 W. The studies on wick porosity revealed that it has significant effect on the heat leak from evaporator to compensation chamber and the lower porosity leads to higher heat leak. From the analysis, an optimum performance of LHP was observed with 60% wick porosity, 0.0073 m wick thickness, 5 °C sink temperature, vapor line diameter of 0.0053 m and condenser effectiveness as 0.9 among the various parameters under investigations.

Abstract:The cylindrical vapor chamber with its interior vapor-liquid circulation facilitated by the pulsating heat pipe network at the 50% filling ratio of distilled water was proposed. The total heating area of the two annular evaporators at both axial ends is identical with the middle condenser cooling area. With the equal heat flux emitted from each evaporator, the measurements of the overall thermal resistance, the Nusselt numbers of evaporator and condenser, the temporal pressure variation and the skin temperature uniformity over the condenser were carried out with the total heating power in the range of 30-90 W at the inclination angles of 0 (horizontal), π/6, π/3, π/2 (vertical) and six cooling airflow rates for each heating power tested. The thermal resistances of the two evaporators were both decreased as the heater power increased but their difference was systematically enlarged by tilting the vapor chamber from horizontal to vertical orientations. The power spectrum of the time-domain pressure signal revealed two dominant frequencies in association with the vapor bubble agitations in the pulsating heat pipe network at all the test conditions. These frequencies and the heating power dominated the thermal performances of the vapor chamber after demonstrating that the responses of the dominant frequencies to the changes in heating and cooling conditions correlated well with the corresponding variations in the overall thermal resistance and the temperature uniformity of the condenser. Referring to the results measured from the planar vapor chambers in the literature, the comparative thermal performances of the cylindrical thin vapor chamber were disclosed. A set of empirical correlation was developed to permit the evaluation of the overall thermal resistances of the two evaporators for relevant applications.

Abstract:Lube oil cooling is a very important heat transfer process on board, and the use of liquid-liquid heat pipe heat exchangers (HPHE) is easier to maintain and save energy, and does not have the risk of leakage. In this work, the heat transfer and flow in the heat pipe row of liquid-liquid HPHE is analyzed. The numerical model of HPHE based on the thermal resistance network of heat pipe is constructed and verified with the actual experimental data, and its maximum deviation is 8.1%. Results show that increasing the working fluid temperature in the evaporative section improved the operating performance of the heat pipe inside the HPHE, with the maximum equivalent thermal conductivity reaching 7112 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 70 °C. Furthermore, increasing the hot fluid flow rate improved the heat transfer rate of the HPHE more than increasing the cold fluid inlet flow rate. The convective heat transfer performance equations were fitted to the HPHE, with reliable accuracy within 5% obtained for both the forced convection correlations in the condensing and evaporating sections. The pipe row effect was observed to have some variability, with the periodic variation of the heat transfer coefficient per pipe row being more pronounced. The heat transfer coefficient of the pipe row at the outlet decreased by 15.5%, and the heat transfer coefficient of the pipe row at the baffle gap was also about 15% lower than that of the middle pipe row.
