Abstract:To promote biomass-derived tar and coke upgrading, biomass pyrolysis intensification was utilized by the co-pyrolysis of biomass and caking coal with suitable particle size. The intensification led to a 15% increase in light tar fraction in tar, indicating a transformation from heavy tar to light components (phenols, aliphatic hydrocarbons). Moreover, the resulting coke achieved high strength (M-25 > 80%) that can meet the requirement for moving bed gasification. To further facilitate tar upgrading and alleviate secondary reactions of volatiles that result in more secondary-coke and less gas, calcium-based Ca@Cu catalysts were synthesized and then loaded along the predicted coke cracks to improve tar quality without compromising coke granularity and strength. The results indicated that the catalytic upgrading mitigated the formation of pyrolytic water and secondary-coke, and dramatically improved tar quality as the light tar fraction in tar increased by 15-30%. Specifically, the upgraded light tar contains more phenols, naphthalenes, and anthracenes but less acids, ketones, and furfurals. It was postulated that selective cleavage of oxygen-containing functional groups (mainly ether bonds) promoted tar reconstruction to release more light aromatics during the catalysis. The coke strength continued to increase by 3-6%, possibly due to mitigation of H2O formation as indicated by more oxygen-containing groups retained in the aromatics during the Ca@Cu catalysis. The current study provided a new strategy to simultaneously upgrade coke and tar during catalytic pyrolysis of biomass for efficient utilization of the biomass.

Abstract:Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 bimetallic catalyst was prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and the physicochemical properties were obtained by a series of characterization methods. The active components are mainly MoS2 and Co-Mo-S existing on γ-Al2O3, the support. Meanwhile, the activity of catalyst in hydroconversion of four coal-related model compounds (CRMCs), dibenzyl ether, furan, thiophene and quinoline, was investigated. Hydroconversion products were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and the possible reaction pathways were proposed according to the GC/MS data. Oxygen was removed from dibenzyl ether via the direct cleavage of Calk-O bridge bond to produce benzylium cation followed by the combination with H− to generate toluene. The hydroconversion of furan can be realized by the direct cleavage of Car-O bond and direct hydrogenation, respectively. For thiophene, H+ directly transferred to sulfur atom, leading to the cleavage of Car-S bond to produce H2S and 1,3-butadiene, which abstracted active hydrogen to yield butane. Another indirect desulfurization pathway for thiophene is hydrogenating to form tetrahydrothiophene and C–S bond cracking to produce butane. Hydroconversion of quinoline started with either N-ring or benzene ring, and the first one was the main pathway.

Abstract:Catalytic upgrading of coal pyrolysis volatiles is a promising technology to bolster the production of value-added chemicals from coal. To optimize product distribution and mitigate catalyst deactivation, this work investigated tandem catalysts combining the upper alkaline earth oxides (CaO or MgO) with the lower modified HZSM-5 (mesopore creation and Ga loading). The pre-cracking of volatiles over CaO or MgO lowered the average molecule size of tar components. The diffusion properties and aromatization of these pre-cracking-derived intermediates were improved, facilitating the secondary upgrading over HZSM-5-based catalysts, promoting the formation of aromatics. The experimental results showed that tandem CaO-HZSM-5 catalysts presented better synergy to improve the tar components as compared to MgO-HZSM-5, considering the formation of aromatics in tar. In this context, the mesopore and metal Ga were introduced into HZSM-5 to further upgrade the tar quality. The mesoporous structure for HZSM-5-meso and Ga/HZSM-5-meso promoted the conversion of aliphatic hydrocarbons into aromatics. Simultaneous introduction of mesopores and Ga synergistically increased the aromatic content in tar to 41.6% and reduced the carbon deposition to 0.88 wt.%. In summary, this work elucidated the mechanism of tandem CaO-modified HZSM-5 catalysis for the upgrading of volatiles from coal pyrolysis.

Abstract:Pyrolysis plays a critical role in clean coal technology and energy conversion and is also conducive to the early peaking of carbon dioxide emissions. Light tar production from traditional coal pyrolysis using various iron-based catalysts for chemicals and fuel oil has gained attention recently. In this study, waste hematite was initially used for catalytic upgrading of rapid coal pyrolysis. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) and pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) were utilized to compare the performances, kinetic parameters, and volatile composition of coal pyrolysis with Fe2O3 and hematite. The results showed that the maximum weight loss rate of coal pyrolysis increased by 1.55 %/min and 0.32 %/min with the addition of Fe2O3 and hematite, respectively, indicating that the pyrolysis reaction became more rapid and intense with iron-based catalysts. Both Kissinger Akahira Sunose (KAS) and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) methods revealed that the catalysts reduced the apparent activation energy of coal pyrolysis. Online FTIR showed the emission temperature and content of coal volatiles, suggesting iron-based catalysts were conducive to the cracking of oxygen-containing functional groups and the directional cracking of groups to CO. Py-GC/MS illustrated the presence of Fe2O3 and hematite could reduce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygenates. In addition, a mechanism for rapid coal pyrolysis with iron-based catalysts was proposed to provide fundamental information for the transformation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, oxygenates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is believed that iron-based catalysts have great potential for future research on upgrading coal volatiles and tar.

Abstract:A suite of carbon materials is prepared from biochar and coal at three different blending ratios with 10, 20, and 30% biochar by mass. These carbon materials are activated by steam to obtain porous structures. The effect of the inactivated and activated carbon materials on the cracking of coal pyrolysis volatiles is evaluated. The results indicate that the inactivated carbon materials are beneficial to improve the yield of light oil with a boiling point below 170 °C. The steam-activated carbon materials are more conducive to cracking tar pitch than the inactivated carbon materials due to the increased defects in carbon structure. However, it is also easy to form more coke deposits. More components rich in hydrogen are cracked to generate radicals that could combine with the phenols' precursor over carbon materials, and the content of phenols in tar is increased. The carbon materials prepared from biochar and coal using this method show distinct advantages as filter media in the granular bed duster. It can improve the quality of tar along with reducing the dust content in tar.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Catalytic upgrading of volatiles is an essential technology to improve the product distribution of pyrolysis for the clean and efficient utilization of low-rank coals. In this work, novel acid-base bifunctional catalysts composed of Ni/Li/Al oxides were designed and prepared using LDH precursors with tunable chemical composition and structural properties. The catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), physisorption, NH 3 -temperature programmed desorption (NH 3 -TPD), CO 2 -temperature programmed desorption (CO 2 -TPD), H 2 -temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). A two-stage fixed bed reactor was employed to evaluate the performance of the catalysts. Characterization results suggest that the crystal size of NiO and the surface area of the catalyst decreased with increasing Li content and decreasing Ni content in the catalyst, while the pore volume and pore diameter were positively correlated with Li content. Moreover, the addition of Li reduced the amount of weak acid sites and raised the amount of total basic sites. Consequently, the bifunctional catalysts boosted the yield of light tar and the contents of aromatics and phenols in tar. Specifically, with the highest total acid sites (569 μmol/g) promoting the cracking of heavy pitch components, Ni 2.5 Li 0.5 Al 1 decreased the content of pitch in tar to 23.8 wt%, representing a 42.7 % drop from the corresponding non-catalytic pyrolysis. Accordingly, it improved the light tar yield to 7.2 wt%, which was 18 % higher than non-catalytic pyrolysis. 450 °C is identified as a suitable temperature for the catalytic upgrading of volatiles from Naomaohu coal; higher catalysis temperatures at 500 °C and 550 °C led to lower tar yield and lower phenols content, along with higher gas yield and more carbon deposition.

Abstract:Microwave-assisted co-pyrolysis of low hydrogen-to-carbon and high hydrogen-to-carbon effective ratio materials with the aid of HZSM-5 and MCM-41 is a promising technique to improve the bio-oil quality. The low content of hydrocarbons and short life cycle of catalyst limit the application of pyrolysis technology in biomass energy conversion. The effects of catalytic temperature, and HZSM-5-to-MCM-41, feedstock-to-catalyst, and straw-to-soapstock ratios on the yield and composition of bio-oil were studied in this work. The quality of bio-oil during biomass pyrolysis can be improved by adjusting the operating conditions. The optimal catalytic temperature, and ratios of HZSM-5-to-MCM-41, feedstock-to-catalyst, and straw-to-soapstock were 400 °C, 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2, respectively. The addition of MCM-41 was beneficial in prolonging the life of HZSM-5 since the macromolecular compounds cracked when MCM-41 was added which restrain the generation of coke. The co-pyrolysis of soapstock with straw advanced the deoxygenation of oxygen-containing compounds especially phenol from straw during pyrolysis.

Abstract:The present study aims to produce bio-fuel from lignin via catalytic upgrading of vapors from lignin microwave pyrolysis. The effects of cobalt modified ZSM-5 catalysts on products yield and chemical selectivity of bio-oils were investigated. A central composite experimental design (CCD) was used to optimize the reaction conditions for bio-fuel production. The effects of the reaction temperature and ratio of catalyst to lignin on products (bio-oil, gas and volatiles) yield distribution and chemical composition of bio-oil were investigated. Response surface analysis indicated that the obtained models were able to predict the products yield distribution and the major chemical compound distribution of the bio-oil. GC/MS analysis revealed that the main chemical compounds were ketones, furans, phenols and guaiacols, which accounted for more than 85% in the detected bio-oil. GC analysis showed that the major components of the gas were H-2 and CO (about 60%).

Abstract:The co-gasification of biomass and coal is a promising way to make H2-rich synthesis gas, to better serve the carbon-neutrality development in China. Decoupling core processes of their thermal conversion, the in-situ catalytic co-gasification and co-pyrolysis of coal over biochar were carried out in a one-stage fluidized-bed/fixed-bed reactor, with the analysis of interaction effect on gas-liquid-solid products by FTIR, XPS, SEM, TG, and electrochemistry methods. The results show that during co-gasification reaction, biochar and coal have a synergistic effect on the in-situ H2O-H2-tar reforming, which is reflected in the competitive relationship of H2O between biochar and coal, as well as coal tar and steam. H2O preferentially undergoes gasification reaction with biochar, greatly enhances the H2 yield (increased by 62.3%) and accelerates the active sites conversion. Biochar enhances the degree of graphitization (CC) of coal char and increases the ratio of O-/N- groups to provide active sites. The AAEMs in biochar would migrate to the coal char surface, enhancing the gasification reactivity and energy storage characteristics of mixed char product, and promoting the reforming of heavy tar into small molecular substances. The interaction between biochar and coal is of great significance to the “carbon‑hydrogen” polygeneration of co-gasification of coal and biomass.

Abstract:Lighter tars are largely useful in chemical industries but their quantity is quite little. Catalytic cracking is applied to improve the yield of light tars during pyrolysis. Consequently, in situ upgrading technique through a MoS 2 catalyst has been explored in this research work. MoS 2 catalyst is useful for the conversion of high energy cost into low energy cost. The variations in coal pyrolysis tar without and with catalyst were determined. Meanwhile, the obtained tar was analyzed using simulated distillation gas chromatograph and Elemental Analyzer. Consequently, the catalyst reduced the pitch contents and increased the fraction of light tar from 50 to 60 wt.% in coal pyrolysis tar. MoS 2 catalyst increased the liquid yield from 18 to 33 (wt.%, db) and decreased gas yield from 27 to 12 (wt.%, db) compared to coal without catalyst. Moreover, it increased H content and hydrogen-to-carbon ratio by 7.9 and 3.3%, respectively, and reduced the contents of nitrogen, sulphur, and oxygen elements by 8.1%, 15.2%, and 23.9%, respectively, in their produced tars compared to coal without catalyst.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) hydrodeoxygenation to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) plays a significant role in biomass conversion. Herein, we develop a facile CoMo bimetallic catalyst with CoN 4 single atom sites and low Co content (0.14 wt.%) for this transformation which exhibits superior performance than most previous works (Turnover frequency up to 28.7 h -1 , more than 8 cycles). A synergistic catalytic effect between Co and Mo sites are disclosed, in which the Mo sites mainly take part in the adsorption of substrates, while the Co sites mainly realize the adsorption and activation of H 2 . The mechanistic studies demonstrate that 5-methyl-2-furaldehyde (MF) is the main reason for the production of 1,2-bis(5-methylfuran-2-yl)ethane (BMF), and the hydrogenolysis of the aldehyde group is the slow step of this reaction. According to these insights into the mechanism, a two-step and one-pot process is firstly exploited for the HMF hydrodeoxygenation, resulting in a higher DMF yield under milder conditions.

Abstract:Biochar-based catalysts have great potential for microwave-induced biomass pyrolysis due to the combination of their excellent microwave absorption performance, good porous structure, and high catalytic activity. In this work, the potential of biochar-based catalysts for microwave-induced catalytic biomass pyrolysis to produce gaseous fuel and upgrade bio-oil was explored and the role of the structural characteristics and Fe-series modification was revealed. The results indicated that the catalytic performance of pure biochar was influenced by their microstructures, and the KOH-activated biochar with abundant microporous structures could effectively promote the gas yields from biomass pyrolysis under microwave heating conditions. With the loading of Fe 0 crystal nanoparticles on biochar, the catalytic activity of biochar was greatly enhanced, resulting in an increase in combustible gas (CO, H 2 and CH 4 ) yield by 50 % compared to pure biochar, reaching 502.09 mL/g at 650 °C, as well as significant simplification of the bio-oil. Furthermore, the Fe-series alloy crystals exhibit superior catalytic activity over Fe 0 , further improving gas yields and promoting bio-oil upgrading. The biochar loading of Fe 0.64 Ni 0.36 nanoparticles resulted in a combustible gas yield as high as 574.84 mL/g, and the production of hydrocarbons was greatly enhanced, with a high relative content of 33.9 % in bio-oil. Biochar-based CoFe nanoparticles promoted selective production of H 2 , with a yield as high as 230.84 mL/g, and the content of mono-phenols in the bio-oil was improved to 74.0 % with the composition of a high phenol relative content of 17.508 %, a trans-isoeugenol relative content of 17.260 %, and a guaiacol relative content of 12.780 %.

Abstract:Catalytic re-forming of lignite pyrolysis volatiles to aromatics over zeolites is a promising method for value-added utilization of coal tar. However, to achieve a significant enhancement in both the yields of light aromatics and the catalytic lifetime by adjusting the structure of ZSM-5 zeolite and to understand its catalytic mechanism comprehensively are still great challenges. Herein, a self-assembled hierarchical core–shell with controlled mesopores and acidity as well as an ultrathin nonacidic protective shell was synthesized through a mild hydrothermal method of alkaline treatment with tetrapropylammonium hydroxide or tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH or TEAOH). Both the number and pore size distribution of mesopores can be regulated by adjusting the hydrothermal treatment time. These generated mesopores not only facilitate the mass transfer of reactants and products but also improve the utilization efficiency of the acid site. In addition, the newly fabricated nonacidic shell, which coats on the surface of ZSM-5 as a chain mail, plays a critical role in suppressing the coke formation by passivation of the acid sites on the external surface. In this work, the pore properties and acid distribution of ZSM-5 zeolite can be regulated synchronously through a desilication–recrystallization process. In addition, enhanced yields of light aromatics and catalytic lifetime were obtained simultaneously. Abstract:Materials exhibiting different textural and surface properties (SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2 and ZSM-5) were investigated as supports for Mo carbides in the upgrading of furfural (FF) in liquid phase to produce 2-methylfuran (2MF). The state of the catalysts after carburization, passivation, and reactivation under a hydrogen atmosphere was investigated by XAS analysis. The effect of the supports was observed in the first step of the reaction, i.e., the hydrogenation of FF to furfuryl acid and related to Lewis acidic and basic sites. The nature of the supports was also relevant to the final state of the Mo carbides after carburization, passivation, and reactivation. The comparison of the materials showed that Mo2C/SiO2 was the least decarburized catalyst after reactivation, and the most active in converting furfural, while the Mo2C/TiO2 system presented smaller carbide particles after carburization and more disorganized particles after reactivation. Mo carbide supported on SiO2 and on TiO2 were found to be suitable catalysts for producing a mixture containing 2-methylfuran and C10 compounds with potential application as biofuel.

Abstract:Pyrolysis as one of the most utilizations of biomass has aroused the increasing attention, however, the key is to upgrade biomass pyrolysis volatiles and enrich the high-valued chemicals in bio-oil. In this paper, different metal oxide-modified Y zeolites, including Fe/Y, Co/Y, Ni/Y, Mg/Y and Zn/Y, were prepared by wet impregnation and employed in catalytic upgrading of pyrolytic volatiles from rice straw (RS) and poplar sawdust (PS). Results showed that the modification by metal oxides led to the decrease of surface area and the changes in the acidity of zeolites. Higher yields of gas and water were obtained over metal oxide-modified zeolites at the expense of the bio-oil yields. More strong acid sites of the Ni/Y and Zn/Y catalysts promoted the generation of H 2 . Fe/Y catalyst showed good selectivity to aromatics in bio-oil owing to high mesoporous volume and strong deoxidization capacity. The highest aromatic hydrocarbons content (63.0%) was obtained over Fe/Y in RS bio-oil. The formation of phenol and cresol was promoted with increasing the ratio of Lewis/Brönsted acid. Under the action of Ni/Y with the highest Lewis/Brönsted ratio, the phenol content in bio-oil from RS and PS pyrolysis was enhanced to 11.8% and 25.3%, respectively. The Fe/Y catalyst had good upgrading performance during three reaction-regeneration cycles. In addition, the possible reaction mechanism of biomass pyrolysis volatiles over metal oxide-modified Y zeolites was proposed. This work will provide a guide for the composition regulation of bio-oil from biomass pyrolysis.

Abstract:The large proportion of heavy components in volatiles from coal pyrolysis is liable to entrain dust and form coke, resulting in the difficulty of separating oil from dust, which thus causes the blocking of technical pipelines. Carbon-based catalysts (BC and BHC) and metal-modified carbon-based catalysts (Fe-BC, Ni-BC, Fe-BHC and Ni-BHC) were prepared for the upgrading of volatiles from coal pyrolysis. This three-dimensional interconnected macroporous carbon material is primarily derived from the pyrolysis of the blend of a biochar and a caking coal. The results show that the metal-modified carbon-based catalysts aid in activating small molecules, such as CH 4 , CO 2 , and H 2 O, increasing in-situ hydrogen donation while cracking polycyclic aromatics, macromolecular oxygen-containing compounds, and N, S-containing heterocyclic compounds. This thus increases the selective catalysis of benzene, naphthalene, biphenyl, and anthracene and improves tar quality. The unactivated Fe-BC and Ni-BC catalysts exhibit high selectivity for light oil with a boiling point below 170 °C. In contrast, the activated Fe-BHC and Ni-BHC catalysts have a stronger ability to crack heavy tar due to the synergistic effect of metal and carbon defect structures. However, the micropores within the catalysts prevent mass transfer of macromolecular compounds, drastically lowering the tar yield with coke formation. Overall, the unactivated metal modified catalyst with three-dimensional porous structure allows for the synergistic effect of dust removal and upgrading of volatiles while maintaining the tar yield, especially the Fe-BC catalyst with a lower price.

Abstract:A novel hybrid material consisted of carbon covered Fe3O4 nanoparticles and MoS2 nanoflower (FCM) was designed and prepared by micelle-assisted hydrothermal methods. Multiple techniques, including X-Ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize it. The results show that FCM has a flower-like morphology with a 330 nm Fe3O4 core as well as 70 nm highly crystalline MoS2 shell. FCM is superparamagnetic with a saturation magnetization of 35 emu g−1. Then hydrocracking of Canadian bitumen residue (CBR) was applied to estimate its catalytic activity. The results show that FCM exhibits superior catalytic hydrocracking activity compared to bulk MoS2 and commercial oil-dispersed Mo(CO)6 by the same Mo loading. Further measurement by elemental analysis, XPS and XRD reveals that the MoS2 nanoflower with abundant catalytic active sites and covered carbon layer with anti-coke ability donate to the superior upgrading performance. Besides, the catalysts can be easily recovered by the external magnetic field. This work provides a novel kind magnetic nanocatalyst which is potential for slurry-phase hydrocracking applications.

Abstract:Catalytic pyrolysis is a widely-used technique for efficient coal conversion and utilization. However, the composition of pyrolytic volatile is complex, making it difficult to study the reaction mechanisms. Consequently, the coal tar was separated to investigate the interaction mechanism among the components in this work. Aliphatics, aromatics, phenolic compounds, and nitrogen heterocycles were effectively separated and enriched from tar using column chromatography. The catalytic pyrolysis experiments were carried out in pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). ZSM-5 catalyst shows better catalytic upgrading effects on aliphatic compounds, aromatics, and nitrogen heterocycles due to its aromatization and cracking capability. The yields of light aromatics are significantly enhanced, reaching 12200 ng/mg, 5000 ng/mg and 9000 ng/mg, respectively. Y-type zeolite exhibits a stronger breaking ability for phenolic hydroxyl groups, significantly boosting BTEXN yield to 8700 ng/mg after catalytic upgrading. There are interactions between aliphatics and other group components. The aliphatic compounds produced hydrogen-rich free radicals through catalytic cracking and other reactions, which stabilized the aromatics' fragments produced from the cracking of aromatics, phenols, and heterocycles, thus promoting the formation of BTEXN.

Abstract:In this study, coal gangue and lignite with high metals-containing are used to prepare porous coal char-based catalysts for biomass tar decomposition via a simple pyrolysis method under CO2 atmosphere. The CO2 etching during the preparation process of the catalysts helps to improve the porosity of the coal char, and the metals in coal are exposed on the surface of the catalyst, thus enhancing the adsorption of the catalysts to the reactants and contact possibility of the reactants with the metals. The activity of the catalysts is influenced by the metals content and preparation temperature, and the coal gangue char prepared at 800 °C (CG-800) exhibits the highest catalytic activity in this work. At a reforming temperature of 700 °C, the conversion efficiency of biomass pyrolysis tar reaches 91.2% using CG-800 as the catalyst with a high total syngas yield of 516 mL/g. Moreover, part of the metal oxides in the catalysts can be reduced by the reducing gases during the tar reforming process, which can further help the catalysts maintain high catalytic activity in the recycling process. During the five-time reuse, the catalysts exhibit excellent stability with only a slight loss in tar conversion and total gas yield.

Abstract:To upgrade pyrolysis vapors derived from the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of Baiyinhua lignite (BYHL) in a drop tube reactor, various Co-loading (1, 3, 6 and 10 wt%) zeolites were prepared via wet impregnation. The effect of Co-loading and pyrolysis temperature ranged from 400 to 700 degrees C on product yields and tar properties were investigated in this work. The results showed that the product yield and the composition of pyrolysis tar were significantly affected by Co-modified HZSM-5 and parent HZSM-5 compared with no catalyst. Incorporation of metal-Co in HZSM-5 had an additional effect on the performance of the parent HZSM-5. The total content of benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E), xylene (X) and naphthalene (N) significantly increased and it reached 24.2 mg/g at Co-loading of 3 wt% (3Co-H-5) at 600 degrees C. 3Co-H-5 exhibited also a promising performance in lowering the oxygen content from 49.8% without a catalyst to 14.6% by GC-MS analysis. The deoxygenation mechanisms over metal-Co active centers and acid-catalyzed reactions, such as isomerization and cracking, over acid sites of HZSM-5 were speculated in this work. In addition, the temperature of 600 degrees C is not only appropriate for fast pyrolysis of lignite to obtain a higher pyrolysis tar, but also for catalytic pyrolysis to obtain BTEXN.
