Abstract:We present a new method for studying the low energy excitations in finite cluster systems and apply it to clarify the nature of the low energy spin excitations in the moderately doped t-J model. We find that the character of the low energy spin excitations changes within the Brillouin zone, with the dominant excitation for momentum transfer (pi,pi) being a spin wave-like collective mode. Spin excitations with momentum transfer different from (pi,pi) have particle-hole character. We give an explicit construction of a low energy collective spin mode in a system with `almost broken symmetry' and demonstrate its validity by explicit numerical check.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is: What is the nature of low-energy spin excitations in the moderately doped (hole concentration <25%) 2D t-J model? Specifically, the authors study low-energy spin excitations in finite clusters using exact diagonalization techniques and attempt to distinguish whether these excitations are particle-hole transitions or collective modes. ### Main Research Content: 1. **Research Background**: - The spin dynamics of high-temperature superconductors is a key issue. - Neutron scattering experiments show a broad peak in the dynamic spin correlation function at a momentum transfer of (π,π), with a frequency of approximately 40 meV. - Previous exact diagonalization studies often reproduce this phenomenon, but there are different interpretations of its physical mechanism. 2. **Research Methods**: - The Lanczos algorithm is used to calculate the dynamic spin correlation function \( S(q, \omega) \). - By comparing the electron addition and removal spectra, it is determined whether the low-energy spin excitations are related to particle-hole transitions in the quasiparticle band near the Fermi level. - The single-particle spectral function \( A^{(\alpha)}(k, \omega) \) is calculated, and its difference spectrum \( A_d(k, \omega) \) is analyzed. 3. **Main Findings**: - For low-energy spin excitations with a momentum transfer of (π,π), the main component is a collective mode similar to a spin wave. - Low-energy spin excitations with other momentum transfers are mainly particle-hole transitions. - By constructing a trial state \( |Ψ_1⟩ \) and comparing it with the final state \( |Ψ_{SCF}⟩ \) obtained from exact diagonalization, the collective nature of the (π,π) mode is verified. ### Conclusion: - At low doping levels, the dominant low-energy mode at the (π,π) position is a collective mode similar to the spin wave in an undoped system. - Low-energy spin excitations at other momentum positions are mainly particle-hole transitions. - These results help to understand the spin dynamics in high-temperature superconductors, especially the spin excitation behavior at a momentum transfer of (π,π). Through these studies, the authors provide a detailed analysis of low-energy spin excitations in the t-J model, offering important clues for further understanding the physical mechanisms of high-temperature superconductors.
