Abstract:We study variational problems involving nonlocal supremal functionals $L^\infty(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^m) \ni u\mapsto {\rm ess sup}_{(x,y)\in \Omega\times \Omega} W(u(x), u(y)),$ where $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded, open set and $W:\mathbb{R}^m\times\mathbb{R}^m\to \mathbb{R}$ is a suitable function. Motivated by existence theory via the direct method, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^\infty$-weak$^\ast$ lower semicontinuity of these functionals, namely, separate level convexity of a symmetrized and suitably diagonalized version of the supremands. More generally, we show that the supremal structure of the functionals is preserved during the process of relaxation. Whether the same statement holds in the related context of double-integral functionals is currently still open. Our proof relies substantially on the connection between supremal and indicator functionals. This allows us to recast the relaxation problem into characterizing weak$^\ast$ closures of a class of nonlocal inclusions, which is of independent interest. To illustrate the theory, we determine explicit relaxation formulas for examples of functionals with different multi-well supremands.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following semilinear elliptic equations of the formwhere ε is a small positive parameter, and where f and g denote superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity. Suppose that b(x) has at least one maximum. We prove that the system has a ground-state solution (ψε, φε) for all sufficiently small ε > 0. Moreover, we show that (ψε, φε) converges to the ground-state solution of the associated limit problem and concentrates to a maxima point of b(x) in certain sense, as ε → 0. Furthermore, we obtain sufficient conditions for nonexistence of ground-state solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop critical point theory for nonsmooth functional f:H01(Ω)→R defined by f(u)=12∫Ω∑i,j=1aij(x,u)DiuDjudx−∫ΩG(x,u)dx. The corresponding deformation lemmas are proved. With the application to the bifurcation for quasilinear Schrödinger equations in mind, we extend the obtained results to that for a functional defined on a product space and prove a generalized saddle point theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we study a class of Hardy--Sobolev type systems defined in $\mathbb{R}^N$ and coupled by a singular critical Hardy--Sobolev term. The main novelty of this work is that the orders of the singularities are independent and contained in a wide range. By means of variational techniques, we will prove the existence of positive bound and ground states for such a system. In particular, we find solutions as minimizers or Mountain--Pass critical points of the energy functional on the underlying Nehari manifold.

Abstract:In this paper we consider semilinear equations $-\Delta u=f(u)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on certain convex domains of the two dimensional model spaces of constant curvature. We prove that a positive, semi-stable solution $u$ has exactly one non-degenerate critical point (a maximum). The proof consists in relating the critical points of the solution with the critical points of a suitable auxiliary function, jointly with a topological degree argument.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove new existence and multiplicity results for critical points of lower semicontinuous functionals in Banach spaces, complementing the nonsmooth critical point theory set forth by Szulkin and avoiding the need of the Palais-Smale condition. We apply our abstract results to get entire solutions with finite energy to Born-Infeld type autonomous equations. More precisely, under almost optimal conditions on the nonlinearity, we construct a positive solution and infinitely many solutions both in the classes of radially symmetric functions and nonradiallly symmetric ones.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a version of the Fountain Theorem for a class of nonsmooth functionals that are sum of a $C^1$ functional and a convex lower semicontinuous functional, and also a version of a theorem due to Heinz for this class of functionals. The new abstract theorems will be used to prove the existence of infinitely many solutions for some elliptic problems whose the associated energy functional is of the above mentioned type. We study problems with logarithmic nonlinearity and a problem involving the 1-Laplacian operator.

Abstract:The present article investigates the existence, multiplicity and regularity of weak solutions of problems involving a combination of critical Hartree type nonlinearity along with singular and discontinuous nonlinearity. By applying variational methods and using the notion of generalized gradients for Lipschitz continuous functional, we obtain the existence and the multiplicity of weak solutions for some suitable range of $\lambda$ and $\gamma$. Finally by studying the $L^\infty$-estimates and boundary behavior of weak solutions, we prove their Hölder and Sobolev regularity.

Sign Changing Critical Points for Locally Lipschitz Functionals

Abstract:In this paper, some existence results for sign-changing critical points of locally Lipschitz functionals in real Banach space are obtained by the method combining the invariant sets of descending ow method with a quantitative deformation. First we assume the locally Lipschitz functionals to be outwardly directed on the the boundary of some closed convex sets of the real Banach space. By using the relation between the critical points on the Banach space and those of the closed convex sets, we construct a quantitative deformation lemma, and then we obtain some linking type of critical points theorems. These theoretical results can be applied to the study of the existence of sign-changing solutions for differential inclusion problems. In contrast with the related results in the literatures, the main results of this paper relax the requirement that the functional being of C1 continuous to locally Lipschitz.
