Abstract:We propose that 3d black holes are an ensemble of tensionless null string states. These microstates typically have non-zero winding. We evaluate their partition function in the limit of large excitation numbers and show that their combinatorics reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and its semiclassical logarithmic corrections.

Abstract:The correspondence principle between strings and black holes is a general framework for matching black holes and massive states of fundamental strings at a point where their physical properties (such as mass, entropy and temperature) smoothly agree with each other. This correspondence becomes puzzling when attempting to include rotation: At large enough spins, there exist degenerate string states that seemingly cannot be matched to any black hole. Conversely, there exist black holes with arbitrarily large spins that cannot correspond to any single-string state. We discuss in detail the properties of both types of objects and find that a correspondence that resolves the puzzles is possible by adding dynamical features and non-stationary configurations to the picture. Our scheme incorporates all black hole and string phases as part of the correspondence, save for one outlier which remains enigmatic: the near-extremal Kerr black hole. Along the way, we elaborate on general aspects of the correspondence that have not been emphasized before.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate open string pair production effects near hyperbolic black holes in AdS$_5$. We study the classical dynamics of D3 probe branes in this background and their quantum tunneling rate across the horizon from the inside using a method similar to that of Kraus, Parikh and Wilczek. The hyperbolic black holes can decay through these tunneling events and their lifetime is estimated. The radiated branes move towards the boundary and do not bounce back. Their world-lines do not intersect directly and they do not hit the singularity either, providing a clean scenario for studying the non-adiabatic pair production effects of open strings stretched between them near horizon. We find that there is a well defined parameter regime where there can be significant pair production. This requires the radiated branes to be highly boosted. However, the radiation of such branes still has small back-reaction on the black hole background, though the open string pair production on them can potentially alter the background. We comment on the possible relation of our model and the AMPS paradox. Some issues and future directions are discussed in the end.

Abstract:String stars, or Horowitz-Polchinski solutions, are Euclidean string theory saddles with a normalizable condensate of thermal winding strings. String stars were suggested as a possible description of stringy (Euclidean) black holes close to the Hagedorn temperature. In this work, we continue the study initiated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2202.06966" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.06966">arXiv:2202.06966</a> by investigating the thermodynamic properties of string stars in asymptotically (thermal) anti-de Sitter backgrounds. First, we discuss the case of AdS$_3$ with mixed RR and NS-NS fluxes (including the pure NS-NS system) and comment on a possible BTZ/string transition unique to AdS$_3$. Second, we present new ``winding-string gas'' saddles for confining holographic backgrounds such as the Witten model, and determine the subleading correction to their Hagedorn temperature. We speculate a black brane/string transition in these models and argue for a possible relation to the deconfined phase of 3+1 dimensional pure Yang-Mills.

Abstract:We construct excited states of fundamental strings that admit a semiclassical description as rotating circular loops of string. We identify them with the supergravity solutions for rotating dipole rings. The identification involves a precise match of the mass, radius and angular momentum of the two systems. Moreover, the degeneracy of the string state reproduces the parametric dependence of the entropy in the supergravity description. When the solutions possess two macroscopic angular momenta, they are better described as toroidal configurations (tubular loops) instead of loops of string. We argue that the decay of the string state can be interpreted as superradiant emission of quanta from the ergoregion of the rotating ring.

Abstract:I review elements of the foundations of black-hole theory with attention to problematic issues, and describe some techniques which either seem to help with the difficulties or at least investigate their scope. The definition of black holes via event horizons has been problematic because it depends on knowing the global structure of space-time; often attempts to avoid this (e.g. apparent horizons) require knowledge of the interior geometry. I suggest studying instead the holonomy relating the exterior neighborhood of the incipient horizon to the regime of distant observers; at least in the spherically symmetric case, this holonomy will develop certain universal features, in principle observable from signals emitted from infalling objects. I discuss the theory of quantum fields in curved space-time, and the difficulties with Hawking's prediction of black-hole radiation. I then show that the usual, very natural, theory of quantum fields in curved space-time runs into difficulties when applied to measurement problems, interactions, zero-point effects and stress-energies. I suggest that we take seriously the possibility that this theory, for all its naturalness, may not be quite right.

Abstract:We study classical closed bosonic strings probing the near-horizon region of a non-extremal black hole and show that this corresponds to understanding string theory in the Carroll regime. This is done by first performing a Carroll expansion and then a near-horizon expansion of a closed relativistic string, subsequently showing that they agree. Concretely, we expand the phase space action in powers of $c^2$, where $c$ is the speed of light, assuming that the target space admits a string Carroll expansion (where two directions are singled out) and show that there exist two different Carroll strings: a magnetic and an electric string. The magnetic string has a Lorentzian worldsheet, whereas the worldsheet of the electric string is Carrollian. The geometry near the horizon of a four-dimensional (4D) Schwarzschild black hole takes the form of a string Carroll expansion (a 2D Rindler space fibred over a 2-sphere). We show that the solution space of relativistic strings near the horizon bifurcates and the two sectors precisely match with the magnetic/electric Carroll strings with an appropriate target space. Magnetic Carroll strings near a black hole shrink to a point on the two-sphere and either follow null geodesics or turn into folded strings on the 2D Rindler spacetime. Electric Carroll strings wrap the two-sphere and follow a massive geodesic in the Rindler space. Finally, we show that 4D non-extremal Kerr and Reissner-Nordström black holes also admit string Carroll expansions near their outer horizons, indicating that our formulation extends to generic non-extremal black holes.

Remarks on Thermal Strings outside Black Holes

Abstract:We discuss the semiclassical approximation to the level density of (super) strings propagating in non-compact coset manifolds $G/H$. We show that the WKB ansatz agrees with heuristic red-shift arguments with respect to the ``exact" sigma model metric, up to some deviations from minimal coupling, parametrized by the dilaton. This approximation is used to study thermal ensembles of free strings in black holes, with the ``brick wall" regularization of `t Hooft. In two dimensions the entropy diverges logarithmically with the horizon thickness, and a local Hagedorn transition occurs in higher dimensional models. We also observe that supersymmetry improves the regularity of strings at the horizon.

String propagation near Kaluza-Klein black holes: an analytical and numerical study

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed investigation of the motion of a string near a Kaluza-Klein black hole, using the null string expansion. The zeroth-order string equations of motion are set up separately for electrically and magnetically charged black hole backgrounds. The case of a string falling head-on into the black hole is considered in detail. The equations reduce to quadratures for a magnetically charged hole, while they are amenable to numerical solution for an electrically charged black hole. The Kaluza-Klein radius seen by the string as it approaches the black hole decreases in the magnetic case and increases in the electric case. For magnetic backgrounds, analytical solutions can be obtained in terms of elliptical integrals. These reduce to elementary functions in special cases, including that of the well-known Pollard-Gross-Perry-Sorkin monopole. Here the string exhibits decelerated descent into the black hole. The results in the authors' earlier papers are substantiated here by presenting a detailed analysis. A preliminary analysis of first-order perturbations is also presented, and it is shown that the invariant string length receives a nonzero contribution in the first order.

Abstract:We discuss the worldsheet sigma-model whose target space is the d +1 dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild black hole. We argue that in the limit where the Hawking temperature of the black hole, T , approaches the Hagedorn temperature, T H , it can be described in terms of a generalized version of the Horowitz-Polchinski effective theory. For d ≥ 6, where the Horowitz-Polchinski EFT [1, 2] does not have suitable solutions, the modified effective Lagrangian allows one to study the black hole CFT in an expansion in powers of d − 6 and T H − T . At T = T H , the sigma model is non-trivial for all d > 6. It exhibits an enhanced SU(2) symmetry, and is described by a non-abelian Thirring model with a radially dependent coupling. The resulting picture connects naturally to the results of [3,4,5], that relate Schwarzschild black holes in flat spacetime at large d to the two dimensional black hole. We also discuss an analogous open string system, in which the black hole is replaced by a system of two separated D-branes connected by a throat. In this system, the asymptotic separation of the branes plays the role of the inverse temperature. At the critical separation, the system is described by a Kondo-type model, which again exhibits an enhanced SU(2) symmetry. At large d , the brane system gives rise to the hairpin brane [6].

Two-dimensional regular string black hole in different gauges

Abstract:This paper serves as an extended version of our previous letter <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.03808" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.03808">arXiv:2212.03808</a> [hep-th]. In this paper, we investigate the non-perturbative and non-singular black hole solutions derived from complete $\alpha^{\prime}$ corrected Hohm-Zwiebach action in different gauges (coordinate systems). In addition to the results that we obtained in the previous letter, we present the following additional results in this paper: 1) The regular black hole solutions in different gauges can be mutually transformed. 2) The $\alpha^{\prime}$ corrections do not introduce any extra singularities beyond the event horizon. 3) The event horizon remains unaffected by the $\alpha^{\prime}$ corrections. The results of this paper provide valuable illustrations for further investigation of more complicated regular black hole solutions utilizing the complete $\alpha^{\prime}$ in the near future.

Abstract:Gravitational entropy arises in string theory via coarse graining over an underlying space of microstates. In this review we would like to address the question of how the classical black hole geometry itself arises as an effective or approximate description of a pure state, in a closed string theory, which semiclassical observers are unable to distinguish from the "naive" geometry. In cases with enough supersymmetry it has been possible to explicitly construct these microstates in spacetime, and understand how coarse-graining of non-singular, horizon-free objects can lead to an effective description as an extremal black hole. We discuss how these results arise for examples in Type II string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 and on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 that preserve 16 and 8 supercharges respectively. For such a picture of black holes as effective geometries to extend to cases with finite horizon area the scale of quantum effects in gravity would have to extend well beyond the vicinity of the singularities in the effective theory. By studying examples in M-theory on AdS_3 x S^2 x CY that preserve 4 supersymmetries we show how this can happen.

From Black Strings to Fundamental Strings: Non-uniformity and Phase Transitions

Abstract:We discuss the transition between black strings and fundamental strings in the presence of a compact dimension, $\mathbb{S}^1_z$. In particular, we study the Horowitz-Polchinski effective field theory in $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{S}^1_z$, with a reduction on the Euclidean time circle $\mathbb{S}_\tau^1$. The classical solution of this theory describes a bound state of self-gravitating strings, known as a ``string star'', in Lorentzian spacetime. By analyzing non-uniform perturbations to the uniform solution, we identify the critical mass at which the string star becomes unstable towards non-uniformity along the spatial circle (i.e., Gregory-Laflamme instability) and determine the order of the associated phase transition. For $3\le d<4$, we argue that at the critical mass, the uniform string star can transition into a localized black hole. More generally, we describe the sequence of transitions from a large uniform black string as its mass decreases, depending on the number of dimensions $d$. Additionally, using the $SL(2)_k/U(1)$ model in string theory, we show that for sufficiently large $d$, the uniform black string is stable against non-uniformity before transitioning into fundamental strings. We also present a novel solution that exhibits double winding symmetry breaking in the asymptotically $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{S}^1_\tau\times\mathbb{S}^1_z$ Euclidean spacetime.
