Abstract:In this paper, we try to construct black hole thermodynamics based on the fact that, the formation and evaporation of a black hole can be described by quantum unitary evolutions. First, we show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S_BH may not be a Boltzmann or thermal entropy. To confirm this statement, we show that the original black hole's "first law" may not simply be treated as the first law of thermodynamics formally, due to some missing metric perturbations caused by matter. Then, by including those (quantum) metric perturbations, we show that the black hole formation and evaporation can be described in a unitary manner effectively, through a quantum channel between the exterior and interior of the event horizon. In this way, the paradoxes of information loss and firewall can be resolved effectively. Finally, we show that black hole thermodynamics can be constructed in an ordinary way, by constructing statistical mechanics.

Abstract:It is argued that string theory on the Euclidean version of the Schwarzschild black hole -- the cigar geometry -- admits a zero mode that is localized at the tip of the cigar. The presence of this mode implies that in string theory, unlike in general relativity, the tip of the cigar is a special region. This is in tension with the Euclidean version of the black hole complementarity principle. We provide some qualitative arguments that link between this zero mode and the origin of the black hole entropy and firewall at the horizon.

Abstract:The lectures that follow were originally given in 1992, and written up only slightly later. Since then there have been dramatic developments in the quantum theory of black holes, especially in the context of string theory. None of these are reflected here. The concept of quantum hair, which is discussed at length in the lectures, is certainly of permanent interest, and I continue to believe that in some generalised form it will prove central to the whole question of how information is stored in black holes. The discussion of scattering and emission modes from various classes of black holes could be; substantially simplified using modern techniques, and from currently popular perspectives the choice of examples might look eccentric. On the other hand fashions have changed rapidly in the field, and the big questions as stated and addressed here, especially as formulated for "real" black holes (nonextremal, in four-dimensional, asymptotically flat space-time, with supersymmetry broken), remain pertinent even as the tools to address them may evolve.The four lectures I gave at the school were based on two lengthy papers that have now been published "Black Holes as Elementary Particles," Nuclear Physics B380, 447 (1992) and "Quantum Hair on Black Holes," Nuclear Physics B378, 175 (1992). The unifying theme of this work is to help make plausible the possibility that black holes, although they are certainly unusual and extreme states of matter, may be susceptible to a description using concepts that are not fundamentally different from those we use in describing other sorts of quantum-mechanical matter.In the first two lectures I discussed dilaton black holes. The fact that apparently innocuous changes in the "matter" action can drastically change the properties of a black hole is already very significant: it indicates that the physical properties of small black holes cannot be discussed reliably in the abstract, but must be considered with due regard to the rest of physics. (The macroscopic properties of large black holes, in particular those of astrophysical interest, are presumably well described by the familiar Einstein-Maxwell action which governs the massless fields. Heavy fields will at most provide Yukawa tails to the field surrounding the hole.) I will show how perturbations may be set up and analyzed completely, and why doing this is crucial for understanding the semiclassical physics of the hole including the Hawking radiation quantitatively. It will emerge that there is a class of dilaton black holes which behave as rather straightforward elementary particles.In the other two lectures I discussed the issue of hair on black holes, in particular the existence of hair associated with discrete gauge charges and its physical consequences. This hair is particularly interesting to analyze because it is invisible classically and to all orders in (h) over bar. Its existence shows that black holes can have some "internal" quantum numbers in addition to their traditional classification by mass, charge, and angular momentum.The text that follows, follows the original papers closely.
Remarks on Thermal Strings outside Black Holes

Abstract:We discuss the semiclassical approximation to the level density of (super) strings propagating in non-compact coset manifolds $G/H$. We show that the WKB ansatz agrees with heuristic red-shift arguments with respect to the ``exact" sigma model metric, up to some deviations from minimal coupling, parametrized by the dilaton. This approximation is used to study thermal ensembles of free strings in black holes, with the ``brick wall" regularization of `t Hooft. In two dimensions the entropy diverges logarithmically with the horizon thickness, and a local Hagedorn transition occurs in higher dimensional models. We also observe that supersymmetry improves the regularity of strings at the horizon.

Hagedorn String Thermodynamics in Curved Spacetimes and near Black Hole Horizons

Abstract:This thesis concerns the study of high-temperature string theory on curved backgrounds, generalizing the notions of Hagedorn temperature and thermal scalar to general backgrounds. Chapter 2 contains a review on string thermodynamics in flat space, setting the stage. Chapters 3 and 4 contain the detailed study of the random walk picture in a general curved background. Chapters 5 and 6 then apply this to Rindler space, the near-horizon approximation of a generic (uncharged) black hole. Chapters 7 and 8 contain a study of the AdS3 and BTZ WZW models where we study the thermal spectrum and the resulting random walk picture that emerges. Chapters 9 and 10 attempt to draw general conclusions from the study of the two specific examples earlier: we draw lessons on string thermodynamics in general and on (perturbative) string thermodynamics around black hole horizons. For the latter, we point out a possible link to the firewall paradox. Finally, chapter 11 contains a detailed discussion on the near-Hagedorn (and high-energy) stress tensor in a generic spacetime, the results of which are applied to provide a description of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in terms of long string equilibration.

Black holes and modular forms in string theory

Abstract:The study of black holes in string theory has led to the discovery of deep and surprising connections between black holes and modular forms -- which are two classical, a priori unrelated, subjects. This article explains the main physical and mathematical ideas behind these connections. It is known from the pioneering work of J.Bekenstein and S.Hawking in the 1970s that black holes have thermodynamic entropy, and should therefore be made up of a collection of microscopic quantum states. Superstring theory provides a framework wherein we can associate a number of microscopic states that make up the quantum-statistical system underlying a black hole, thus explaining their thermodynamic behavior from a more fundamental point of view. %The above-mentioned connections arise from the observation that, i The basic connection to modular forms arises from the observation that, in the simplest superstring-theoretic construction, the generating function of the number of microscopic states is a modular form. In one direction, modular symmetry acts as a powerful guide to the calculation of quantum-gravitational effects on the black hole entropy. In the other direction, the connection has led to the discovery of surprising relations between Ramanujan's mock modular forms and a class of string-theoretic black holes, thus providing an infinite number of new examples of mock modular forms.

Abstract:The Schrödinger equation of the Schwarzschild black hole (BH) shows that a BH is composed of a particle, the "electron", interacting with a central field, the "nucleus". Via de Broglie's hypothesis, one interprets the "electron" in terms of BH horizon's modes. Quantum gravity effects modify the BH semi-classical structure at the Schwarzschild scale rather than at the Planck scale. The analogy between this BH Schrödinger equation and the Schrödinger equation of the s states of the hydrogen atom permits us to solve the same equation. Therefore, BHs are well defined quantum gravitational systems obeying Schrödinger's theory: the "gravitational hydrogen atoms". By identifying the potential energy in the BH Schrödinger equation as being the gravitational energy of a spherically symmetric shell, a different nature of the quantum BH seems to surface. BHs are self-interacting, highly excited, spherically symmetric, massive quantum shells generated by matter condensing on the apparent horizon, concretely realizing the membrane paradigm. The quantum BH descripted as a "gravitational hydrogen atom" is a fictitious mathematical representation of the real, quantum BH, a quantum massive shell having as radius the oscillating gravitational radius. Nontrivial consequences emerge from this result: i) BHs have neither horizons nor singularities; ii) there is neither information loss in BH evaporation, nor BH complementarity, nor firewall paradox. These results are consistent with previous ones by Hawking, Vaz, Mitra and others. Finally, the special relativistic corrections to the BH Schrödinger equation give the BH Klein-Gordon equation and the corresponding eigenvalues.

On small black holes in string theory

Abstract:We discuss the worldsheet sigma-model whose target space is the d +1 dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild black hole. We argue that in the limit where the Hawking temperature of the black hole, T , approaches the Hagedorn temperature, T H , it can be described in terms of a generalized version of the Horowitz-Polchinski effective theory. For d ≥ 6, where the Horowitz-Polchinski EFT [1, 2] does not have suitable solutions, the modified effective Lagrangian allows one to study the black hole CFT in an expansion in powers of d − 6 and T H − T . At T = T H , the sigma model is non-trivial for all d > 6. It exhibits an enhanced SU(2) symmetry, and is described by a non-abelian Thirring model with a radially dependent coupling. The resulting picture connects naturally to the results of [3,4,5], that relate Schwarzschild black holes in flat spacetime at large d to the two dimensional black hole. We also discuss an analogous open string system, in which the black hole is replaced by a system of two separated D-branes connected by a throat. In this system, the asymptotic separation of the branes plays the role of the inverse temperature. At the critical separation, the system is described by a Kondo-type model, which again exhibits an enhanced SU(2) symmetry. At large d , the brane system gives rise to the hairpin brane [6].

Abstract:This SpringerBrief is based on a masters course on black hole thermodynamics and the black hole information problem taught by Dieter Lüst during the summer term 2017 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich; it was written by Ward Vleeshouwers. It provides a short introduction to general relativity, which describes gravity in terms of the curvature of space-time, and examines the properties of black holes. These are central objects in general relativity which arise when sufficient energy is compressed into a finite volume, so that even light cannot escape its gravitational pull. We will see that black holes exhibit a profound connection with thermodynamic systems. Indeed, by quantizing a field theory on curved backgrounds, one can show that black holes emit thermal (Hawking) radiation, so that the connection with thermodynamics is more than a formal similarity. Hawking radiation gives rise to an apparent conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics known as the black hole information problem. If a black hole formed from a pure quantum state evaporates to form thermal radiation, which is in a mixed state, then the unitarity postulate of quantum mechanics is violated. We will examine the black hole information problem, which has plagued the physics community for over four decades, and consider prominent examples of proposed solutions, in particular, the string theoretical construction of the Tangherlini black hole, and the infinite number of asymptotic symmetries given by BMS-transformations.

Density of States, Black Holes and the Emergent String Conjecture

Abstract:We study universal features of the density of one-particle states $\rho(E)$ in weakly coupled theories of gravity at energies above the quantum gravity cutoff $\Lambda$, defined as the scale suppressing higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein--Hilbert action. Using thermodynamic properties of black holes, we show that in asymptotically flat spacetimes, certain features of $\rho(E)$ above the black hole threshold $M_{\rm min}$ are an indicator for the existence of large extra dimensions, and cannot be reproduced by any lower-dimensional field theory with finitely many fields satisfying the weak energy condition. Based on the properties of gravitational scattering amplitudes, we argue that there needs to exist a (possibly higher-dimensional) effective description of gravity valid up to the cutoff $\Lambda$. Combining this with thermodynamic arguments we demonstrate that $\rho(E)$ has to grow exponentially for energies $\Lambda \ll E \ll M_{\rm min}$. Furthermore we show that the tension of any weakly coupled $p$-brane with $p\geq 1$ is bounded from below by $\Lambda^{p-1}$. We use this to argue that any tower of weakly coupled states with mass below $\Lambda$ has to be a Kaluza--Klein (KK) tower. Altogether these results indicate that in gravitational weak-coupling limits the lightest tower of states is either a KK tower, or has an exponentially growing degeneracy thereby resembling a string tower. This provides evidence for the Emergent String Conjecture without explicitly relying on string theory or supersymmetry.

Abstract:Black holes are the hydrogen atoms of quantum gravity. For instance solving the information loss paradox will likely require a deep understanding of how the long-sought quantum gravity theory works. In this thesis we explore how black holes are modelled and how the quantum structure emerges in the context of string theory. We will mainly limit to four dimensional supersymmetric solutions, considering black holes microstates from three different viewpoints: intersecting string and branes in string theory, supergravity solutions and ground states of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics living on the worldvolume of the branes. Abstract:In this essay, we introduce a theoretical framework designed to describe black hole dynamics. The difficulties in understanding such dynamics stems from the proliferation of scales involved when one attempts to simultaneously describe all of the relevant dynamical degrees of freedom. These range from the modes that describe the black hole horizon, which are responsible for dissipative effects, to the long wavelength gravitational radiation that drains mechanical energy from macroscopic black hole bound states. We approach the problem from a Wilsonian point of view, by building a tower of theories of gravity each of which is valid at different scales. The methodology leads to multiple new results in diverse topics including phase transitions of Kaluza–Klein black holes and the interactions of spinning black hole in non-relativistic orbits. Moreover, our methods tie together speculative ideas regarding dualities for black hole horizons to real physical measurements in gravitational wave detectors.

Abstract:The exact decay rate for emission of massless minimally coupled scalar fields by a non-extremal black hole in 2+1 dimensions is obtained. At low energy, the decay rate into scalars with zero angular momentum is correctly reproduced within conformal field theory. The conformal field theory has both left- and right-moving sectors and their contribution to the decay rate is associated naturally with left and right temperatures of the black hole.

Abstract:The central question in this article is how information does leak out from black holes. Relying on algebraic arguments and the concept of superselection sectors, we propose the existence of certain operators whose correlations extend across the black hole atmosphere and range into the interior. Contained in the full algebra, these black hole intertwiners will not belong to the subalgebra describing semiclassical bulk physics. We study this proposal in the context of operator reconstructions for code spaces containing a large number of microstates. As long as the atmosphere is excluded from a particular subsystem, the global state seen under the action of the associated algebra is maximally mixed and therefore described by a single classical background. Once the relevant correlations are encoded, i.e. if the algebra is sufficiently enlarged, perfect state distinguishability becomes possible. We arrive at this by computing the von Neumann entropy which may explain the result obtained by applying the quantum extremal surface prescription to the mixed state. We then examine these insights in the context of black hole evaporation and argue that information is transferred to the radiation via black hole intertwiners. We derive the Page curve. The mechanism above suggests that black hole information is topologically protected. An infalling observer would experience no drama. This may resolve the unitarity problem without running into any firewall or state puzzle, the latter being evident in generalized entropy computations. We also examine the question of how certain wormhole topologies may be understood given these findings. We argue that their occurrence in gravity replica computations may be related to the maximal correlation between radiation and atmosphere surrounding the old black hole. This may suggest a connection between topology change and near horizon quantum gravitational effects.

Abstract:We trace the origins and development of black hole thermodynamics across the past half-century, emphasizing the framework's relation to classical thermodynamics, and the vital role played by the notions of equilibrium, stationarity, and symmetry. We discuss different interpretations of the first law of black hole mechanics, and assess the validity of its mechanical, process-based interpretation for evaporating black holes. We bring these ideas to the cosmological realm, and highlight the various difficulties that arise when formulating thermodynamics for black holes in asymptotically de Sitter backgrounds. We discuss a number of proposed solutions and the open questions that arise therein.

Abstract:We show that black holes can be quantized in an intuitive and elegant way with results in agreement with conventional knowledge of black holes by using Bohr's idea of quantizing the motion of an electron inside the atom in quantum mechanics. We find that properties of black holes can also be derived from an ansatz of quantized entropy Delta S = 4 pi k Delta R/<(lambda)overbar>, which was suggested in a previous work to unify the black hole entropy formula and Verlinde's conjecture to explain gravity as an entropic force. Such an Ansatz also explains gravity as an entropic force from quantum effect. This suggests a way to unify gravity with quantum theory. Several interesting and surprising results of black holes are given from which we predict the existence of primordial black holes ranging from Planck scale both in size and energy to big ones in size but with low energy behaviors.
Off-Shell Strings II: Black Hole Entropy

Abstract:In 1994, Susskind and Uglum argued that it is possible to derive the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $A/4G_N$ from string theory. In this article we explain the conceptual underpinnings of this argument, while elucidating its relationship to induced gravity and ER=EPR. Following an off-shell calculation by Tseytlin, we explicitly derive the classical closed string effective action from sphere diagrams at leading order in $\alpha^{\prime}$. We then show how to use this to obtain black hole entropy from the RG flow of the NLSM on conical manifolds. (We also briefly discuss the more problematic ``open string picture'' of Susskind and Uglum, in which strings end on the horizon.) We then compare these off-shell results with the rival ``orbifold replica trick'' using the on-shell $\mathbb{C}/Z_{N}$ background, which does not account for the leading order Bekenstein-Hawking entropy -- unless perhaps tachyons are allowed to condense on the orbifold. Possible connections to the ER=EPR conjecture are explored. Finally, we discuss prospects for various extensions, including prospects for deriving holographic entanglement entropy in the bulk of AdS.
