Abstract:The area law of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole suggests that the black hole should have a lower-dimensional holographic description. It has been found recently that a large class of rotating and charged black holes could be holographically described a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT). We show that the universal information of the dual CFT, including the central charges and the temperatures, is fully encoded in the thermodynamics laws of both outer and inner horizons. These laws, characterizing how the black hole responds under the perturbation, allows us to read different dual pictures with respect to different kinds of perturbations. The remarkable effectiveness of this thermodynamics method suggest that the inner horizon could play a key role in the study of holographic description of the black hole.

Abstract:Understanding how the thermodynamic properties of a black hole are modified when probed by D-branes is an important problem in AdS/CFT. This work focuses on a recently proposed black hole/D3-brane system in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, which is dual to four-dimensional N=4 SYM in the presence of a two-dimensional surface defect. The Laplace transform that extracts the asymptotic growth of states in this defect CFT naturally defines a thermodynamic approach in the gravitational side of the duality for which charges and entropy are real. Studying the superconformal defect index in a large-charge expansion for all values of~$N$, we compute the leading correction to the entropy of the combined system, which matches precisely with its gravity counterpart.

Abstract:In this paper, we try to construct black hole thermodynamics based on the fact that, the formation and evaporation of a black hole can be described by quantum unitary evolutions. First, we show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S_BH may not be a Boltzmann or thermal entropy. To confirm this statement, we show that the original black hole's "first law" may not simply be treated as the first law of thermodynamics formally, due to some missing metric perturbations caused by matter. Then, by including those (quantum) metric perturbations, we show that the black hole formation and evaporation can be described in a unitary manner effectively, through a quantum channel between the exterior and interior of the event horizon. In this way, the paradoxes of information loss and firewall can be resolved effectively. Finally, we show that black hole thermodynamics can be constructed in an ordinary way, by constructing statistical mechanics.

Abstract:A large AdS Schwarzschild black hole can be approximated by an AdS planar black hole. However, the temperature of a planar black hole is not well defined due to the translational invariance of the horizon. We propose to fix this arbitrariness by imposing the entropy area law. Furthermore, using the AdS/CFT holography, we propose a relationship between the temperatures of an AdS planar and large AdS Schwarzschild black holes.

Abstract:In a generalized parameter space, regular black holes can be regarded as non-singular solutions under specific parameters in Einstein gravity theory coupled with non-linear electromagnetic fields. Following this concept, we investigate the thermodynamic states and phase transitions of Bardeen-AdS-class black holes, revealing that the system can be classified into two categories, Type I and Type II, based on whether it adopts a pure Bardeen-AdS spacetime without event horizons or a Bardeen-AdS black hole as its phase state, each exhibiting distinct thermodynamic properties. If one includes the Bardeen-AdS black holes in the system (Type I), there will be three distinct black hole states and the phase transitions between them are analogous to the Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes. On the other hand, if the pure Bardeen-AdS spacetime is included (Type II), an additional tiny black hole state emerges. A phase transition reminiscent of the Hawking-Page transition was found. Significantly, in this scenario, thermodynamical characteristic curves exhibit discontinuous behavior, which attributes to the multiple horizons. The presence of a Bardeen-AdS black hole within the phase structure of the Bardeen-AdS-class black hole profoundly modifies the thermodynamical properties of the system, highlighting the novel aspects of regular black holes.

Abstract:In the thermodynamics of black holes in asymptotically flat space, the third law of thermodynamics is violated, and entropy cannot be consistently modeled through conventional statistical mechanics. Notably, the third law of thermodynamics is violated for the Schwarzschild black hole, and its entropy can only be described using an unconventional model, such as a Bose gas in negative dimensions. In contrast, for certain black brane solutions such as Poincare AdS black branes, Lifshitz black branes, and anisotropic Lifshitz-type black branes, the third law is preserved, with entropy vanishing as temperature approaches zero. In this paper, we extend the previously established duality between black hole and Bose gas thermodynamics to black branes. Specifically, the Poincare black brane in $D$ spacetime dimensions corresponds to a non-relativistic Bose gas in $2(D-2)$ spatial dimensions. Furthermore, the duality between Lifshitz branes and Bose gases relates a Lifshitz brane with exponent $\alpha$ in $D$-dimensional spacetime to a Bose gas of quasi-particles with energy $k^\alpha$ in $D-2$ spatial dimensions.

Abstract:We trace the origins and development of black hole thermodynamics across the past half-century, emphasizing the framework's relation to classical thermodynamics, and the vital role played by the notions of equilibrium, stationarity, and symmetry. We discuss different interpretations of the first law of black hole mechanics, and assess the validity of its mechanical, process-based interpretation for evaporating black holes. We bring these ideas to the cosmological realm, and highlight the various difficulties that arise when formulating thermodynamics for black holes in asymptotically de Sitter backgrounds. We discuss a number of proposed solutions and the open questions that arise therein.

Entanglement Entropy for the Black 0-Brane

Abstract:We analyse the entanglement entropy between the Black 0-Brane solution to supergravity and its Hawking radiation. The Black 0-Brane admits a dual Gauge theory description in terms of the Matrix model for M-Theory, named BFSS theory, which is the theory of open strings on a collection of N D0-branes. Recent studies of the model have highlighted a mechanism of Black Hole evaporation for this system, based on the chaotic nature of the theory and the existence of flat directions. This paper further explores this idea, through the computation of the von Neumann entropy of Hawking radiation. In particular, we show that the expected Page curve is indeed reproduced, consistently with a complete recovery of information after the Black Hole has fully evaporated. A pivotal step in the computation is the definition of a Hilbert space which allows for a quantum mechanical description of partially evaporated Black Holes. We find that the entanglement entropy depends on the choice of a parameter, which can be interpreted as summarizing the geometric features of the Black Hole, such as the size of the resolved singularity and the size of the horizon.

Specific Heats for Quantum BTZ Black Holes in Extended Thermodynamics

Abstract:It was shown recently that extended black hole thermodynamics, where the cosmological constant is a dynamical variable, giving rise to a pressure $p$ and its conjugate volume $V$, can be given a natural setting in the context of braneworld models. We study the specific heat capacities $C_p(T)$ and $C_V(T)$ of the quantum version of the BTZ black hole that lives in the induced gravity theory on the brane. There are multiple branches of solutions, and we explore and characterize key features of the possible behaviour. We identify and study a critical point in the space of solutions where both specific heats diverge. In the regime of weak backreaction where we a close to an ordinary theory of gravity, the black hole is "sub-entropic", but as backreaction is increased we note that there are parts of parameter space that has regions where it is "super-entropic". While a study of the sign of the specific heats does not always show a corresponding instability (conjectured in the literature), the presence of strong backreaction makes interpretation unclear.

Abstract:Thermodynamics of Bardeen AdS black holes has attracted a great deal of attentions due to its intrinsic complications and rich phase structures. However, the entropy and thermodynamic volume are incorrect in some literatures. In this paper we revisit the thermodynamics of Bardeen AdS black holes and provide the correct entropy and thermodynamic volume. Furthermore, thermodynamic geometries are a powerful tool to probe the microstructure of black holes. Based on the Hessian matrix of black hole mass, we introduce a thermodynamic metric and give its scalar curvature in Weinhold's geometry. The conformal relation between Weinhold's geometry and Ruppeiner's geometry will be changed due to the specific first law of thermodynamics for regular black holes like the Bardeen AdS black hole. We also investigate the critical behaviour of phase transitions in an extended phase space, and find that the critical behaviour of the Bardeen AdS black hole coincides with that of liquid-gas systems. In particular, based on the Weinhold geometry we unveil a repulsive interaction in the microstructure of the Bardeen AdS black hole under its small volume state, while it is known that only attractive interaction exists in the microstructure of the van der Waals fluid.

Abstract:As we know that due to the quantum gravitational effects black hole horizons are ``fractalized'' into a sphereflake by Barrow. Based on this issue, in this work we investigate the phase structure and stability of the Einstein-Power-Yang-Mills AdS black holes with the fractal structure on the black hole horizon in the restricted phase space. Through the thermodynamics first law and the Smarr relation in the restricted phase space, we observe that the mass parameter is understood as the inter energy and the Smarr relation is not a homogeneous function of order one for all quantities due to the fractal structure. And the fractal structure can be regarded as a phase transition probe. When this system with the fixed central charge there exists a novel phenomena: the supercritical phase transition. Furthermore the effects of the fractal parameter and non-linear Yang-Mills parameter on the thermodynamics stability of this system are also investigated.

Entropy and Spectrum of Near-Extremal Black Holes: semiclassical brane solutions to non-perturbative problems

Abstract:The black hole entropy has been observed to generically turn negative at exponentially low temperatures $T\sim e^{-S_0}$ in the extremal Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $S_0$, a seeming pathology often attributed to missing non-perturbative effects. In fact, we show that this negativity must happen for any effective theory of quantum gravity with an ensemble description. To do so, we identify the usual gravitational entropy as an annealed entropy $S_a$, and prove that this quantity gives $S_0$ at extremality if and only if the ground-state energy is protected by supersymmetry, and diverges negatively otherwise. The actual thermodynamically-behaved quantity is the average or quenched entropy $S_q$, whose calculation is poorly understood in gravity: it involves replica wormholes in a regime where the topological expansion breaks down. Using matrix integrals we find new instanton saddles that dominate gravitational correlators at $T\sim e^{-S_0}$ and are dual to semiclassical wormholes involving dynamical branes. These brane solutions give the leading contribution to any black hole very near extremality, and a duality with matrix ensembles would not make sense without them. In the non-BPS case, they are required to make $S_q$ non-negative and also enhance the negativity of $S_a$, both effects consistent with matrix integrals evaluated exactly. Our instanton results are tested against the on-shell action of D3-branes dual to multiply wrapped Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-YM, and a precise match is found. Our analysis of low-energy random matrix spectra also explains the origin of spectral gaps in supersymmetric theories, not only when there are BPS states at zero energy, but also for purely non-BPS supermultiplets. In the former, our prediction for the gap in terms of the degeneracy of BPS states agrees with the R-charge scaling in gapped multiplets of $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-JT gravity.

Abstract:We reconsider the thermodynamics of anti-de Sitter black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting, where both the cosmological constant Λ and the gravitational Newton's constant G are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both Λ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge C of the dual conformal field theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of charged anti-de Sitter black holes in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of freedom in the conformal field theory. Compared to the "old" P-V criticality, this new criticality is "universal" (independent of the bulk pressure) and directly relates to the thermodynamics of the dual field theory and its central charge.

Abstract:It was recently observed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2304.07320" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.07320">arXiv:2304.07320</a> for thermal Kerr-Newman black holes in 4d flat space that one can rewrite the conventional thermodynamics on the inner and outer horizons in terms of left- and right-moving variables with a remarkable simplification of the corresponding expressions. With the goal of illustrating the wide applicability of these newly proposed natural variables, we extend the original observation in four independent directions that can be further superimposed on each other. These four generalizations can be thought of as different deformations of the original 4d Einstein-Maxwell theory, all within the framework of supergravity: higher derivative (HD) corrections in minimal 4d supergravity; additional scalar and vector couplings in matter-coupled 4d supergravity; higher dimensions, in particular 5d minimal supergravity; and a cosmological constant in 4d minimal gauged supergravity with Anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum. Each of these generalizations offers a different lesson about the novel thermodynamics, and we pay special attention to the respective BPS limits that can be understood from fixed point formulae, demonstrating the power of the natural variables to capture the full phase space.

Abstract:In this paper, by treating the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic pressure, we study the thermodynamics and phase transitions of the dyonic AdS black holes in Gauss-Bonnet-Scalar gravity, where the conformal scalar field is considered. In a more general extended phase space, we first verified the first law of black hole thermodynamics, and find that it is always true. Meanwhile, the corresponding Smarr relation is also obtained. Then, we found that this black hole exhibits interesting critical behaviors in six dimensions, i.e., two swallowtails can be observed simultaneously. Interestingly, in a specific parameter space, we observed the small/intermediate/large black hole phase transitions, with the triple point naturally appearing. Additionally, the small/large black hole phase transition, similar to the liquid/gas phase transition of the van der Waals fluids, can also be found in other parameter regions. Moreover, we note that the novel phase structure composed of two separate coexistence curves discovered in the dyonic AdS black holes in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity disappears in Gauss-Bonnet-Scalar gravity. This suggests that this novel phase structure may be related to gravity theory, and importantly, it is generally observed that the triple point is a universal property of dyonic AdS black holes. On the other hand, we calculated the critical exponents near the critical points and found that they share the same values as in mean field theory. Finally, it is true that these results will provide some deep insights into the interesting thermodynamic properties of the dyonic AdS black holes in the background of conformal scalar fields.

Thermodynamics of Lovelock-Lifshitz Black Branes

Abstract:We investigate the thermodynamics of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We begin by introducing the finite action of third order Lovelock gravity in the presence of a massive vector field for a flat boundary, and use it to compute the energy density of these black branes. Using the field equations, we find a conserved quantity along the $r$ coordinate that relates the metric parameters at the horizon and at infinity. Remarkably, though the subleading large-$r$ behavior of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes differs substantively from their Einsteinian Lifshitz counterparts, we find that the relationship between the energy density, temperature, and entropy density is unchanged from Einsteinian gravity. Using the first law of thermodynamics to obtain the relationship between entropy and temperature, we find that it too is the same as the Einsteinian case, apart from a constant of integration that depends on the Lovelock coefficients.

Abstract:Considering a canonical ensemble, in which the temperature and the charge on a wall of the cavity are fixed, we investigate the thermodynamics of a D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole in a finite spherical cavity. Moreover, it shows that the first law of thermodynamics is still satisfied. We then discuss the phase structure and transition in both five and six dimensions. Specifically, we show that there always exist two regions in the parameter space. In one region, the system possesses one single phase. However in the other region, there could coexist three phases and a van der Waals-like phase transition occurs. Finally, we find that there is a fairly close resemblance in thermodynamic properties and phase structure of a Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell black hole, either in a cavity or in anti-de Sitter space.

Abstract:In these notes we present a summary of existing ideas about phase transitions of black hole spacetimes in semiclassical gravity and offer some thoughts on three possible scenarios by which these transitions could take place. Our first theme is ilustrated by a quantum atomic black hole system, generalizing to finite-temperature a model originally offered by Bekenstein. In this equilibrium atomic model, the black hole phase transition is realized as the abrupt excitation of a high energy state, suggesting analogies with the study of two-level atoms. Our second theme argues that the black hole system shares similarities with the defect-mediated Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in condensed matter. These similarities suggest that the black hole phase transition may be more fully understood by focusing upon the dynamics of black holes and white holes, the spacetime analogy of vortex and anti-vortex topological defects. Finally we compare the black hole phase transition to another transition driven by an exponentially increasing density of states, the Hagedorn transition first found in hadron physics in the context of dual models or the old string theory. In modern string theory, the Hagedorn transition is linked by the Maldacena conjecture to the Hawking-Page black hole phase transition in Anti-deSitter space, as observed by Witten. Understanding the dynamics of the Hagedorn transition may thus yield insight into the dynamics of the black hole phase transition. We argue that characteristics of the Hagedorn transition are already contained within classical string systems where a nonperturbative and dynamical analysis is possible.
