Abstract:It is argued that string theory on the Euclidean version of the Schwarzschild black hole -- the cigar geometry -- admits a zero mode that is localized at the tip of the cigar. The presence of this mode implies that in string theory, unlike in general relativity, the tip of the cigar is a special region. This is in tension with the Euclidean version of the black hole complementarity principle. We provide some qualitative arguments that link between this zero mode and the origin of the black hole entropy and firewall at the horizon.

Abstract:The correspondence principle between strings and black holes is a general framework for matching black holes and massive states of fundamental strings at a point where their physical properties (such as mass, entropy and temperature) smoothly agree with each other. This correspondence becomes puzzling when attempting to include rotation: At large enough spins, there exist degenerate string states that seemingly cannot be matched to any black hole. Conversely, there exist black holes with arbitrarily large spins that cannot correspond to any single-string state. We discuss in detail the properties of both types of objects and find that a correspondence that resolves the puzzles is possible by adding dynamical features and non-stationary configurations to the picture. Our scheme incorporates all black hole and string phases as part of the correspondence, save for one outlier which remains enigmatic: the near-extremal Kerr black hole. Along the way, we elaborate on general aspects of the correspondence that have not been emphasized before.

Abstract:The microscopic origin of black hole entropy remains one of the more intriguing open questions in theoretical physics. A subplot in this drama is the renowned Cardy-Verlinde formula, which uses two-dimensional conformal formalism to explain the entropy of an arbitrary-dimensional black hole. In this paper, by exploiting the AdS/CFT and black hole-string dualities, we are able to provide a physical picture for this paradoxical behavior. Following a recent study by Haylo (in a dS context), we show that the dual CFT for an asymptotically AdS spacetime actually conforms to a string-like description. Moreover, we demonstrate that this stringy CFT is directly related to a string that lives on the stretched horizon of an AdS-Schwarzschild-like black hole. In fact, after an appropriate renormalization, these two boundary theories are shown to be thermodynamically equivalent.
Unpacking Black Hole Complementarity

Abstract:To what extent does the black hole information paradox lead to violations of quantum mechanics? I explain how black hole complementarity provides a framework to articulate how quantum characterizations of black holes can remain consistent despite the information paradox. I point out that there are two ways to cash out the notion of consistency in play here: an operational notion and a descriptive notion. These two ways of thinking about consistency lead to (at least) two principles of black hole complementarity: an operational principle and a descriptive principle. Our background philosophy of science regarding realism/instrumentalism might initially lead us to prefer one principle over the other. However, the recent physics literature, which applies tools from quantum information theory and quantum computational complexity theory to various thought experiments involving quantum systems in or around black holes, implies that the operational principle is successful where the descriptive principle is not. This then lets us see that for operationalists the black hole information paradox might no longer be pressing.

Black holes and modular forms in string theory

Abstract:The study of black holes in string theory has led to the discovery of deep and surprising connections between black holes and modular forms -- which are two classical, a priori unrelated, subjects. This article explains the main physical and mathematical ideas behind these connections. It is known from the pioneering work of J.Bekenstein and S.Hawking in the 1970s that black holes have thermodynamic entropy, and should therefore be made up of a collection of microscopic quantum states. Superstring theory provides a framework wherein we can associate a number of microscopic states that make up the quantum-statistical system underlying a black hole, thus explaining their thermodynamic behavior from a more fundamental point of view. %The above-mentioned connections arise from the observation that, i The basic connection to modular forms arises from the observation that, in the simplest superstring-theoretic construction, the generating function of the number of microscopic states is a modular form. In one direction, modular symmetry acts as a powerful guide to the calculation of quantum-gravitational effects on the black hole entropy. In the other direction, the connection has led to the discovery of surprising relations between Ramanujan's mock modular forms and a class of string-theoretic black holes, thus providing an infinite number of new examples of mock modular forms.

Abstract:Black holes are the hydrogen atoms of quantum gravity. For instance solving the information loss paradox will likely require a deep understanding of how the long-sought quantum gravity theory works. In this thesis we explore how black holes are modelled and how the quantum structure emerges in the context of string theory. We will mainly limit to four dimensional supersymmetric solutions, considering black holes microstates from three different viewpoints: intersecting string and branes in string theory, supergravity solutions and ground states of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics living on the worldvolume of the branes. Abstract:The recent progress in string theory strongly suggests that formation and evaporation of black holes is a unitary process. This fact makes it imperative that we find a flaw in the semiclassical reasoning that implies a loss of information. We propose a new criterion that limits the domain of classical gravity: the hypersurfaces of a foliation cannot be stretched too much. This conjectured criterion may have important consequences for the early Universe.

Abstract:Gravitational entropy arises in string theory via coarse graining over an underlying space of microstates. In this review we would like to address the question of how the classical black hole geometry itself arises as an effective or approximate description of a pure state, in a closed string theory, which semiclassical observers are unable to distinguish from the "naive" geometry. In cases with enough supersymmetry it has been possible to explicitly construct these microstates in spacetime, and understand how coarse-graining of non-singular, horizon-free objects can lead to an effective description as an extremal black hole. We discuss how these results arise for examples in Type II string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 and on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 that preserve 16 and 8 supercharges respectively. For such a picture of black holes as effective geometries to extend to cases with finite horizon area the scale of quantum effects in gravity would have to extend well beyond the vicinity of the singularities in the effective theory. By studying examples in M-theory on AdS_3 x S^2 x CY that preserve 4 supersymmetries we show how this can happen.

Off-Shell Strings II: Black Hole Entropy

Abstract:In 1994, Susskind and Uglum argued that it is possible to derive the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $A/4G_N$ from string theory. In this article we explain the conceptual underpinnings of this argument, while elucidating its relationship to induced gravity and ER=EPR. Following an off-shell calculation by Tseytlin, we explicitly derive the classical closed string effective action from sphere diagrams at leading order in $\alpha^{\prime}$. We then show how to use this to obtain black hole entropy from the RG flow of the NLSM on conical manifolds. (We also briefly discuss the more problematic ``open string picture'' of Susskind and Uglum, in which strings end on the horizon.) We then compare these off-shell results with the rival ``orbifold replica trick'' using the on-shell $\mathbb{C}/Z_{N}$ background, which does not account for the leading order Bekenstein-Hawking entropy -- unless perhaps tachyons are allowed to condense on the orbifold. Possible connections to the ER=EPR conjecture are explored. Finally, we discuss prospects for various extensions, including prospects for deriving holographic entanglement entropy in the bulk of AdS.

Abstract:String stars, or Horowitz-Polchinski solutions, are Euclidean string theory saddles with a normalizable condensate of thermal winding strings. String stars were suggested as a possible description of stringy (Euclidean) black holes close to the Hagedorn temperature. In this work, we continue the study initiated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2202.06966" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.06966">arXiv:2202.06966</a> by investigating the thermodynamic properties of string stars in asymptotically (thermal) anti-de Sitter backgrounds. First, we discuss the case of AdS$_3$ with mixed RR and NS-NS fluxes (including the pure NS-NS system) and comment on a possible BTZ/string transition unique to AdS$_3$. Second, we present new ``winding-string gas'' saddles for confining holographic backgrounds such as the Witten model, and determine the subleading correction to their Hagedorn temperature. We speculate a black brane/string transition in these models and argue for a possible relation to the deconfined phase of 3+1 dimensional pure Yang-Mills.

Black hole complementarity from microstate models: A study of information replication and the encoding in the black hole interior

Abstract:We study how the black hole complementarity principle can emerge from quantum gravitational dynamics within a local semiclassical approximation. Further developing and then simplifying a microstate model based on the fragmentation instability of a near-extremal black hole, we find that the key to the replication (but not cloning) of infalling information is the decoupling of various degrees of freedom. The infalling matter decouples from the interior retaining a residual time-dependent quantum state in the hair which encodes the initial state of the matter non-isometrically. The non-linear ringdown of the interior after energy absorption and decoupling also encodes the initial state, and transfers the information to Hawking radiation. During the Hawking evaporation process, the fragmented throats decouple from each other and the hair decouples from the throats. We find that the hair mirrors infalling information after the decoupling time which scales with the logarithm of the entropy (at the time of infall) when the average mass per fragmented throat (a proxy for the temperature) is held fixed. The decoding protocol for the mirrored information does not require knowledge of the interior, and only limited information from the Hawking radiation, as can be argued to be necessitated by the complementarity principle. We discuss the scope of the model to illuminate various aspects of information processing in a black hole.

Abstract:We study classical closed bosonic strings probing the near-horizon region of a non-extremal black hole and show that this corresponds to understanding string theory in the Carroll regime. This is done by first performing a Carroll expansion and then a near-horizon expansion of a closed relativistic string, subsequently showing that they agree. Concretely, we expand the phase space action in powers of $c^2$, where $c$ is the speed of light, assuming that the target space admits a string Carroll expansion (where two directions are singled out) and show that there exist two different Carroll strings: a magnetic and an electric string. The magnetic string has a Lorentzian worldsheet, whereas the worldsheet of the electric string is Carrollian. The geometry near the horizon of a four-dimensional (4D) Schwarzschild black hole takes the form of a string Carroll expansion (a 2D Rindler space fibred over a 2-sphere). We show that the solution space of relativistic strings near the horizon bifurcates and the two sectors precisely match with the magnetic/electric Carroll strings with an appropriate target space. Magnetic Carroll strings near a black hole shrink to a point on the two-sphere and either follow null geodesics or turn into folded strings on the 2D Rindler spacetime. Electric Carroll strings wrap the two-sphere and follow a massive geodesic in the Rindler space. Finally, we show that 4D non-extremal Kerr and Reissner-Nordström black holes also admit string Carroll expansions near their outer horizons, indicating that our formulation extends to generic non-extremal black holes.

Black hole - wormhole transitions in two dimensional string theory

Abstract:We study charged black hole and wormhole solutions of Type 0A/IIA string theory in two dimensions. There is a competition between Euclidean wormholes and near extremal black holes in the thermodynamic ensemble. In a certain regime of phase space, the former can disassociate into the latter. Since such solutions are of string scale near the wormhole throat that takes an $AdS_2$ form, there is a need for an exact worldsheet description. We discuss relevant WZW coset models which we we argue will shed light on this problem. Finally, we present appropriate versions of the Type 0A/IIA matrix quantum mechanics models that are expected to describe these geometries.

Strings near black holes are Carrollian

Abstract:We demonstrate that strings near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole, when viewed by a stationary observer at infinity, probe a string Carroll geometry, where the effective lightspeed is given by the distance from the horizon. We expand the Polyakov action in powers of this lightspeed to find a theory of Carrollian strings. We show that the string shrinks to a point to leading order near the horizon, which follows a null geodesic in a two-dimensional Rindler space. At the next-to-leading order the string oscillates in the embedding fields associated with the near-horizon two-sphere.

Abstract:The black hole information paradox is one of the most important issues in theoretical physics. We review some recent progress using string theory in understanding the nature of black hole microstates. For all cases where these microstates have been constructed, one finds that they are horizon sized 'fuzzballs.' Most computations are for extremal states, but recently one has been able to study a special family of non-extremal microstates, and see 'information carrying radiation' emerge from these gravity solutions. We discuss how the fuzzball picture can resolve the information paradox. We use the nature of fuzzball states to make some conjectures on the dynamical aspects of black holes, observing that the large phase space of fuzzball solutions can make the black hole more 'quantum' than assumed in traditional treatments.

Abstract:A brief review of the status of duality symmetries in string theory is presented. The evidence is accumulating rapidly that an enormous group of duality symmetries, including perturbative T dualities and non-perturbative S-dualities, underlies string theory. It is my hope that an understanding of these symmetries will suggest the right way to formulate non-perturbative string theory. Whether or not this hope is realized, it has already been demonstrated that this line of inquiry leads to powerful new tools for understanding gauge theories and new evidence for the uniqueness of string theory, as well as deep mathematical results.

Complementarity for a Dynamical Black Hole

Abstract:Black hole complementarity posits that the interior of a black hole is not independent from its Hawking radiation. This leads to an apparent violation of causality: the interior can be acausally affected by operators acting solely on the radiation. We argue that this perspective is misleading and that the black hole interior must be viewed as existing in the causal past of the Hawking radiation, despite the fact that they are spacelike separated in the semiclassical description. Consequently, no operation on the Hawking radiation -- no matter how complex -- can affect the experience of an infalling observer. The black hole interior and the radiation only appear spacelike separated in the semiclassical description because an infalling observer's ability to access complex information is limited; the chaotic dynamics on the horizon, as viewed from the exterior, then converts any effect caused by such an observer to information in the Hawking radiation which cannot be accessed at the semiclassical level. We arrive at the picture described above by considering a unitary exterior description in which the flow of information is strictly causal, which we extend to apply throughout the entire history of black hole evolution, including its formation. This description uses the stretched event horizon as an inner edge of spacetime, on which the information inside is holographically encoded. We argue that the global spacetime picture arises from coarse-graining over black hole microstates, and discuss its relationship with the exterior description.
