Abstract:Duality symmetries are reviewed. A sufficient condition for duality is the existence of a global symmetry. This can be used as a guideline to systematically prove duality between different field theories. Bosonization and T- duality, for abelian and non-abelian global symmetries, are discussed in detail as well as duality for general antisymmetric tensor field theories. In this case, the presence of topological defects break the global symmetry but duality survives manifesting itself in a different way. Open questions and current limitations of this approach to prove all known dualities are discussed.
T-symmetry in String Geometry Theory

Abstract:String geometry theory is one of the candidates of non-perturbative formulation of string theory. In this paper, we have shown that dimensionally reduced string geometry theories have what we call T-symmetry. In case of the dimensional reduction in space-like directions, the T-symmetry transformation gives the T-dual transformation between the type IIA and IIB perturbative vacua. In case of the dimensional reduction in the direction of string geometry time $\bar{\tau}$, the T-symmetry transformation is independent of the T-dual transformation, and gives a symmetry that cannot be seen in the perturbative string theories.

Bounds and Dualities of Type II Little String Theories

Abstract:We explore the symmetry structure of Type II Little String Theories and their T-dualities. We construct these theories both from the bottom-up perspective starting with seed Superconformal Field Theories, and from the top-down using F-/M-theory. By exploiting anomaly inflow and unitarity of the LST worldsheet theory, we derive strong conditions on the possible 6D bulk theories and their flavor algebras. These constraints continue to apply if gravity is coupled to the theory. We also study the higher form symmetry structure of these theories and show how they get exchanged under T-duality. Finally, we comment on seemingly consistent bottom-up Little String Theories that cannot be constructed from the top-down approach.

Abstract:In recent years two intriguing observations have been made for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and for superstrings on AdS5xS5: In the planar limit the computation of the spectrum is vastly simplified by the apparent integrability of the models. Furthermore, planar scattering amplitudes of the gauge theory display remarkable features which have been attributed to the appearance of a dual superconformal symmetry. Here we review the connection of these two developments from the point of view of the classical symmetry by means of a super-T-self-duality. In particular, we show explicitly how the charges of conformal symmetry and of the integrable structure are related to the dual ones.

[Effects of celiac plexus block on splanchnic circulation--II: Changes in the systemic hemodynamics and the blood flow of the liver and kidney in dogs].

Abstract:Effects of celiac plexus block (CPB) on systemic and splanchnic circulation, especially of liver and kidney, were investigated in twenty nine mongrel dogs. CPB was performed by an anterior approach through a catheter placed in a paraaortic compartment using 7 mg.kg-1 of 2% mepivacaine. Tissue blood flow measurement was performed by a hydrogen clearance method in eleven dogs, and vascular blood flow was measured in eighteen dogs by an electromagnetic flow meter. Swan-Ganz catheter was inserted to measure mean arterial pressure (ABP), heart rate (HR), central venous pressure (CVP), mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAP), pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and cardiac output (CO). Then stroke volume (SV), systemic vascular resistance (SVR) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) were calculated. Following CPB, ABP, HR, CVP and C.O. were significantly decreased at 7 to 9%. PAP decreased at 5%. PCWP, SV, SVR and PVR were unchanged. The hepatic arterial blood flow increased significantly, and portal venous blood flow decreased after CPB transiently, and then recovered to control value or to a higher level at 60min after CPB. The tissue blood flow of the liver tended to increase, but the change was not significant. In the kidney, both arterial and tissue blood flows increased significantly after CPB. The results suggest that following CPB, hepatic and renal tissue blood flows increased because of the increments of their arterial blood flows, unless a profound systemic hemodynamic depression occurred.

Abstract:The effective action for type II string theory compactified on a six-torus is N = 8 supergravity, which is known to have an E7 duality symmetry. We show that this is broken by quantum effects to a discrete subgroup, E7(Z), which contains both the T-duality group O(6, 6; Z) and the S-duality group SL(2; Z). We present evidence for the conjecture that E7(Z) is an exact ‘U-duality’ symmetry of type II string theory. This conjecture requires certain extreme black hole states to be identified with massive modes of the fundamental string. The gauge bosons from the Ramond-Ramond sector couple not to string excitations but to solitons. We discuss similar issues in the context of toroidal string compactifications to other dimensions, compactifications of the type II string on K3 × T2 and compactifications of 11-dimensional supermembrane theory.

Abstract:Einstein's theory in the vacuum was recently shown to possess an $SO(2)$ duality invariance, which is broken by coupling to matter. Duality invariance can be restored by enlarging the phase space of the theory to allow for violations of the algebraic Bianchi identity. We show that in cases where the matter content can be understood as a component of the torsion tensor duality can be restored and we compute the corresponding duality current. We consider the case of NS-NS gravity as an example and find that the duality current is given by the divergence of the axion. In the linearized approximation of the low energy heterotic string theory these results imply that duality of the generalized Riemann curvature tensor implements Riemannian, axion-dilaton and electro-magnetic dualities simultaneously.

Abstract:A review of the applications of noncommutative geometry to a systematic formulation of duality symmetries in string theory is presented. The spectral triples associated with a lattice vertex operator algebra and the corresponding Dirac-Ramond operators are constructed and shown to naturally incorporate target space and discrete worldsheet dualities as isometries of the noncommutative space. The target space duality and diffeomorphism symmetries are shown to act as gauge transformations of the geometry. The connections with the noncommutative torus and Matrix Theory compactifications are also discussed.

On the Fate of Stringy Non-Invertible Symmetries

Abstract:Non-invertible symmetries in quantum field theory (QFT) generalize the familiar product rule of groups to a more general fusion rule. In many cases, gauged versions of these symmetries can be regarded as dual descriptions of invertible gauge symmetries. One may ask: are there any other types of non-invertible gauge symmetries? In theories with gravity we find a new form of non-invertible gauge symmetry that emerges in the limit of fundamental, tensionless strings. These stringy non-invertible gauge symmetries appear in standard examples such as non-abelian orbifolds. Moving away from the tensionless limit always breaks these symmetries. We also find that both the conventional form of non-invertible gauge symmetries and these stringy generalizations are realized in AdS/CFT. Although generically broken, approximate non-invertible symmetries have implications for Swampland constraints: in certain cases they can be used to prove the existence of towers of states related to the Distance Conjecture, and can sometimes explain the existence of slightly sub-extremal states which fill in the gaps in the sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture.

T-Duality and Flavor Symmetries in Little String Theories

Abstract:We explore the T-duality web of 6D Heterotic Little String Theories, focusing on flavor algebra reducing deformations. A careful analysis of the full flavor algebra, including Abelian factors, shows that the flavor rank is preserved under T-duality. This suggests a new T-duality invariant in addition to the Coulomb branch dimension and the two-group structure constants. We also engineer Little String Theories with non-simply laced flavor algebras, whose appearance we attribute to certain discrete 3-form fluxes in M-theory. Geometrically, these theories are engineered in F-theory with non-Kähler favorable K3 fibers. This geometric origin leads us to propose that freezing fluxes are preserved across T-duality. Along the way, we discuss various exotic models, including two inequivalent $\text{Spin(32)}/\mathbb{Z}_2$ models that are dual to the same $\text{E}_8 \times \text{E}_8$ theory, and a family of self-T-dual models.

Generalized Symmetries in 2D from String Theory: SymTFTs, Intrinsic Relativeness, and Anomalies of Non-invertible Symmetries

Abstract:Generalized global symmetries, in particular non-invertible and categorical symmetries, have become a focal point in the recent study of quantum field theory (QFT). In this paper, we investigate aspects of symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs) and anomalies of non-invertible symmetries for 2D QFTs from a string theory perspective. Our primary focus is on an infinite class of 2D QFTs engineered on D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold singularities. We derive 3D SymTFTs from the topological sector of IIB supergravity and discuss the resulting 2D QFTs, which can be intrinsically relative or absolute. For intrinsically relative QFTs, we propose a sufficient condition for them to exist. For absolute QFTs, we show that they exhibit non-invertible symmetries with an elegant brane origin. Furthermore, we find that these non-invertible symmetries can suffer from anomalies, which we discuss from a top-down perspective. Explicit examples are provided, including theories for $Y^{(p,k)}(\mathbb{P}^2)$, $Y^{(2,0)}(\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1)$, and $\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_4$ geometries.

K-theoretic Global Symmetry in String-constructed QFT and T-duality

Abstract:We propose that generalized symmetries in some string-constructed QFTs are given by twisted K-theory, so as to be manifestly compatible with T-duality. We thus have even-form and odd-form symmetries determined by $K^*_N(\partial X)$, the twisted K-theory as D-brane charges on the asymptotic boundary $\partial X$ of internal geometry $X$ with twist class $N$. For these QFTs, "$p$-form symmetries" are no longer separately well-defined for individual $p$, but instead mixed up. We discuss 6D ADE-type (2,0) SCFTs and some 6d (1,0) LSTs as examples and demonstrate their twisted K-theoretic symmetries to be compatible with T-duality.

Celestial Topology, Symmetry Theories, and Evidence for a Non-SUSY D3-Brane CFT

Abstract:Symmetry Theories (SymThs) provide a flexible framework for analyzing the global categorical symmetries of a $D$-dimensional QFT$_{D}$ in terms of a $(D+1)$-dimensional bulk system SymTh$_{D+1}$. In QFTs realized via local string backgrounds, these SymThs naturally arise from dimensional reduction of the linking boundary geometry. To track possible time dependent effects we introduce a celestial generalization of the standard "boundary at infinity" of a SymTh. As an application of these considerations we revisit large $N$ quiver gauge theories realized by spacetime filling D3-branes probing a non-supersymmetric orbifold $\mathbb{R}^6 / \Gamma$. Comparing the imprint of symmetry breaking on the celestial geometry at small and large 't Hooft coupling we find evidence for an intermediate symmetry preserving conformal fixed point.

Abstract:We consider the flat supersymmetric D2 and anti-D2 system, which follows from ordinary noncommutative D2 anti-D2 branes by turning on an appropriate worldvolume electric field describing dissolved fundamental strings. We study the strings stretched between D2 and anti-D2 branes and show explicitly that the would-be tachyonic states become massless. We compute the string spectrum and clarify the induced noncommutativity on the worldvolume. The results are compared with the matrix theory description of the worldvolume gauge theories.

Abstract:Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries can appear both in heterotic and type I string theories. In the heterotic case we find a single anomalous U(1), while in open string theories several such symmetries can appear. Nonetheless, there is a conjectured duality symmetry that might connect these two theories. We review the properties of anomalous gauge symmetries in various string theories as well as the status of this heterotic-type I/II duality. We also comment on the possible phenomenological applications of anomalous gauge symmetries in string theory.

Abstract:This dissertation presents a study of dualities and generalized global symmetries in quantum field theories (QFTs) from the string theory perspective. Chapter 2 is based on the work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2110.03696" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.03696">arXiv:2110.03696</a> with Sebastián Franco, Alessandro Minino and Ángel M. Uranga . It introduces a new class of string theory backgrounds, Spin(7) orientifolds, allowing for the engineering of 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ gauge theories on D1-branes and illustrating the perspective on 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ theories as real slices of 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ ones. Chapter 3 is based on the work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.03929" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.03929">arXiv:2112.03929</a> with Sebastián Franco, Alessandro Minino and Ángel M. Uranga. It presents a new, geometric perspective on the triality of 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ gauge theories, based on their brane engineering introduced in Chapter 2. It also shows that general Spin(7) orientifolds extend triality to theories consisting of coupled 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ sectors, leading to extensions of triality that interpolate between pure 2$d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ cases. Chapter 4 is based on the work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.09743" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.09743">arXiv:2212.09743</a> with Jonathan J. Heckman, Max Hubner, Ethan Torres and Hao Y. Zhang. It presents a top-down construction of non-invertible duality symmetries in 4$d$ QFTs. The realization of QFTs is through D3-branes probing a Calabi-Yau threefold with an isolated singularity. The non-invertible duality defect then arises from configurations of 7-branes "at infinity". The study shows that different field-theoretic realizations of duality defects simply amount to distinct choices of where to place 7-brane branch cuts in the 5D bulk.

Generalized Symmetries in Supergravities and Superconformal Field Theories via String Theory

Abstract:In this dissertation, we study the generalized symmetries in supergravities and superconformal field theories from the string theory perspective. Part one is devoted to the study of string universality in high spacetime dimensions. Answering this question requires us to combine the following two approaches. In the "top-down" approach, We focus on supergravity theories in 7, 8, and 9 dimensional spacetime with 16 supercharges. We emphasize two discrete aspects of these theories: generalized global symmetries and frozen singularities. We give an exhaustive classification of IIB supergravity theory in 8D, particularly emphasizing these two discrete aspects. In the "bottom-up" approach, we present a consistency condition of general 8D supergravity theories involving their higher-form symmetries use it to rule out many global structures of the gauge groups in 8D supergravity theories that do not admit string theory constructions. Part two studies the generalized global symmetries of geometrically-engineered quantum field theories via string theory. We examined branes wrapping on relative topological cycles that give heavy defects that are charged under generalized global symmetries, which can then be used to construct new lower-dimensional theories. By investigating the string theory origin of the topological operators, we provide a general construction of these topological operators in the context of geometric engineering as branes wrapped on the homological cycles in the asymptotic boundary of the internal geometry. We illustrate this proposal by determining non-invertible 2-form symmetries in 6D superconformal field theories. Furthermore, by wrapping type IIB 7-brane on the entire asymptotic boundary of the internal manifold, we explicitly give a unified string-theoretic construction of two different types of field-theoretic non-invertible duality defects.

Abstract:In this note I review the role played by dualities in the Supermembrane Theory compactified on a torus. Supermembrane theory realize S, T, so U-duality, as exact symmetries of the theory. There are two well defined sectors: with and without central charges. Both sectors have the SL(2,Z)xZ2 U-duality group in 9D as a symmetry of the theory, but the supermembrane with central charges, also exhibits an extra SL(2,Z) symmetry of the theory associated to the diffeomorphisms not connected with the identity changing the homology basis. The Z2 symmetry is T-duality transformation that acts on the supermembrane and generalize that of the string. This T-duality transformation acts locally and also globally on the supermembrane theory. It has a natural description in terms of the cohomology of the base manifold and the homology of the target torus. When only string-like states are preserved, one recovers both type II string theories in 9D. If one also consider properly limit of the T-duality transformation characterizing the supermembrane, the usual closed string T-duality transformation between the type IIA and type IIB mass operators is recovered.

Symmetries in the Hamiltonian formulation of string theory

Abstract:In the context of the Hamiltonian formulation of string theory, a widely acknowledged issue is the inability of the first-class constraints to accurately reproduce the Lagrangian symmetry transformations. We take a critical look at the Hamiltonian formulation of the Polyakov string and demonstrate, using Castellani's procedure, that diffeomorphism and Weyl symmetries naturally emerge without using any field-dependent reparametrization, thus preserving the theoretical consistency between Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions. Additionally, we will review the standard Hamiltonian analysis of the symmetries in terms of lapse and shift functions and show that the reason behind this failure is not due to the non-canonicity of the variables but rather because this parametrization fails to preserve general covariance.
