Abstract:The stability of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes is studied. The squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole looks like five dimensional black hole in the vicinity of horizon and four dimensional Minkowski spacetime with a circle at infinity. In this sense, squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes can be regarded as black holes in the Kaluza-Klein spacetimes. Using the symmetry of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes, $SU(2)\times U(1)\simeq U(2)$, we obtain master equations for a part of the metric perturbations relevant to the stability. The analysis based on the master equations gives a strong evidence for the stability of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes. Hence, the squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes deserve to be taken seriously as realistic black holes in the Kaluza-Klein spacetime.

Abstract:We present the first examples of formally asymptotically flat black hole solutions with horizons of general lens space topology $L(p,q)$. These 5-dimensional static/stationary spacetimes are regular on and outside the event horizon for any choice of relatively prime integers $1\leq q<p$, in particular conical singularities are absent. They are supported by Kaluza-Klein matter fields arising from higher dimensional vacuum solutions through reduction on tori. The technique is sufficiently robust that it leads to the explicit construction of regular solutions, in any dimension, realising the full range of possible topologies for the horizon as well as the domain of outer communication, that are allowable with multi-axisymmetry. Lastly, as a by product, we obtain new examples of regular gravitational instantons in higher dimensions.

Abstract:The squashed Kaluza-Klien (KK) black holes differ from the Schwarzschild black holes with asymptotic flatness or the black strings even at energies for which the KK modes are not excited yet, so that squashed KK black holes open a window in higher dimensions. Another important feature is that the squashed KK black holes are apparently stable and, thereby, let us avoid the Gregory-Laflamme instability. In the present paper, the evolution of scalar and gravitational perturbations in time and frequency domains is considered for these squashed KK black holes. The scalar field perturbations are analyzed for general rotating squashed KK black holes. Gravitational perturbations for the so called zero mode are shown to be decayed for non-rotating black holes, in concordance with the stability of the squashed KK black holes. The correlation of quasinormal frequencies with the size of extra dimension is discussed.

Rotating Black Holes in Three-Dimensional Horava Gravity Revisited

Abstract:I revisit rotating black hole solutions in three-dimensional Horava gravity with z = 2 as a simpler set-up of the renormalizable quantum gravity `a la Lifshitz and DeWitt. The solutions have a curvature singularity at the origin for a non-vanishing rotation parameter J, unlike the black holes in three-dimensional Einstein gravity. For anti-de Sitter space, there are black hole event horizons as usual and the singularity is not naked, in agreement with the cosmic censorship. On the other hand, for flat or de Sitter space, the earlier solution has also a cosmic-censorship problem because there are no conventional black hole horizons as in Einstein gravity, other than the usual cosmological horizon for the latter case, so that the singularity could be naked in Horava gravity. However, with the help of recent corrections, I show that the solutions have a peculiar black hole horizon at the origin so that the singularity is not naked even without the conventional black hole horizons in flat or de Sitter case, due to the Lorentz-violating higher-derivative terms. On the other hand, I note also that a new ``cosmological" horizon exists even for the flat case, contrary to the usual wisdom, due to combined effects of the higher derivatives and the angular-momentum barrier. I study an unified treatment of their unusual black hole thermodynamics for the flat and de Sitter spaces, as well as the anti-de Sitter space, which might be due to lack of the absolute horizons in the Lorentz-violating gravity.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the quantum geometric effects near the locations where classical black hole horizons used to appear in Einstein's classical theory, within the framework of an improved dynamic approach, in which the internal region of a black hole is modeled by the Kantowski-Sachs (KS) spacetime and the two polymerization parameters are functions of the phase space variables. Our detailed analysis shows that the effects are so strong that black and white hole horizons of the effective quantum theory do not exist at all and instead are replaced by transition surfaces, across which the metric coefficients and their inverses are smooth and remain finite, as are the corresponding curvatures, including the Kretschmann scalar. These surfaces always separate trapped regions from anti-trapped regions. The number of such surfaces is infinite, so the corresponding KS spacetimes become geodesically complete, and no black and white hole-like structures exist in this scheme.

A classification of supersymmetric Kaluza-Klein black holes with a single axial symmetry

Abstract:We extend the recent classification of five-dimensional, supersymmetric asymptotically flat black holes with only a single axial symmetry to black holes with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics. This includes a similar class of solutions for which the supersymmetric Killing field is generically timelike, and the corresponding base (orbit space of the supersymmetric Killing field) is of multi-centred Gibbons-Hawking type. These solutions are determined by four harmonic functions on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with simple poles at the centres corresponding to connected components of the horizon, and fixed points of the axial symmetry. The allowed horizon topologies are $S^3$, $S^2\times S^1$, and lens space $L(p, 1)$, and the domain of outer communication may have non-trivial topology with non-contractible 2-cycles. The classification also reveals a novel class of supersymmetric (multi-)black rings for which the supersymmetric Killing field is globally null. These solutions are determined by two harmonic functions on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with simple poles at centres corresponding to horizon components. We determine the subclass of Kaluza-Klein black holes that can be dimensionally reduced to obtain smooth, supersymmetric, four-dimensional multi-black holes. This gives a classification of four-dimensional asymptotically flat supersymmetric multi-black holes first described by Denef et al.

Abstract:We investigate five-dimensional rotating and charged black holes with squashed horizons in Godel universes. The general solution was recently derived by applying a squashing transformation on the general non-extremal charged and rotating black hole in the Godel universe found by Wu. We give a discussion of the squashed geometry and also consider its lift to ten dimensions and discuss the T-dual geometry. Finally, using the counterterms method we compute its conserved charges and explore its thermodynamics.

Abstract:We show that a stationary asymptotically flat electro-vacuum solution of Einstein’s equations that is everywhere locally “almost isometric” to a Kerr–Newman solution cannot admit more than one event horizon. Axial symmetry is not assumed. In particular this implies that the assumption of a single event horizon in Alexakis–Ionescu–Klainerman’s proof of perturbative uniqueness of Kerr black holes is in fact unnecessary.

Abstract:We describe a procedure for locating black hole horizons in Kerr-Schild spacetimes in the double copy paradigm. Using only single- and zeroth-copy data on flat spacetime, our procedure predicts the existence of trapped surfaces in the double-copy gravitational solution. We show explicitly how this procedure locates the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole and the general Myers-Perry black hole.

Abstract:We present new exact solutions {which presumably describe} black holes in the background of a spatially flat, pressureless dark matter (DM)-, or dark matter plus dark energy (DM+DE)-, or quintom-dominated universe. These solutions generalize Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi metrics. For a DM- or (DM+DE)-dominated universe, the area of the black hole apparent horizon (AH) decreases with the expansion of the universe while that of the cosmic AH increases. However, for a quintom-dominated universe, the black hole AH first shrinks and then expands, while the cosmic AH first expands and then shrinks. A (DM+DE)-dominated universe containing a black hole will evolve to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution with both AHs approaching constant size. In a quintom-dominated universe, the black hole and cosmic AHs will coincide at a certain time, after which the singularity becomes naked, violating Cosmic Censorship.
New look at black holes: Existence of universal horizons

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of universal horizons in a given static spacetime, and find that the test khronon field can be solved explicitly when its velocity becomes infinitely large, at which point the universal horizon coincides with the sound horizon of the khronon. Choosing the timelike coordinate aligned with the khronon, the static metric takes a simple form, from which it can be seen clearly that the metric is free of singularity at the Killing horizon, but becomes singular at the universal horizon. Applying such developed formulas to three well-known black hole solutions, the Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter, and Reissner-Nordström, we find that in all these solutions universal horizons exist and are always inside the Killing horizons. In particular, in the Eddington-Finkelstein and Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates, in which the metrics are not singular when crossing both of the Killing and universal horizons, the peeling-off behavior of the khronon is found only at the universal horizons, whereby we show that the values of surface gravity of the universal horizons calculated from the peeling-off behavior of the khronon match with those obtained from the covariant definition given recently by Cropp, Liberati, Mohd and Visser.

Black Hole Horizons and their Mechanics

Abstract:Black holes are often characterized by event horizons, following the literature that laid the mathematical foundations of the subject in the 1970s. However black hole event horizons have two fundamental conceptual limitations. First, they are defined only in space-times that admit a future conformal boundary. Second, they are teleological; their formation and growth is not determined by local physics but depends on what could happen in the distant future. Therefore, event horizons have not played much of a role in the recent theoretical advances that were sparked by discoveries of the LIGO-virgo collaborations. This article focuses on quasi-local horizons that have been used instead. Laws governing them -- mechanics of quasi-local horizons -- generalize those that were first found using event horizons. These results, obtained over the last two decades or so, have provided much insight into dynamical predictions of general relativity in the fully nonlinear regime. The article summarizes the deep and multi-faceted interplay between geometry and physics that has emerged. Conceptually, quasi-local horizons also play a key role in the discussion of the quantum evaporation of black holes. However, due to space limitations, this application is only briefly discussed in Section 6.

Non-singular naked solutions in quantum spacetime

Abstract:Polymer models have been used to describe non-singular quantum black holes, where the classical singularity is replaced by a transition from a black hole to a white hole. In a previous letter, in the context of a uni-parametric model with asymptotic flat exterior metric, we fixed the radius of the transition surface through the identification of its area with the area gap of Loop Quantum Gravity. This revealed a dependence of the polymerisation parameter on the black hole mass, where the former increases as the latter decreases, and it also enabled the extension of the model to Planck-scale black holes. We have identified the existence of limiting states with masses $m \geq \sqrt{2}/4$ and zero surface gravity, showing that Hawking evaporation asymptotically leads to remnant black holes of Planck size. In the present paper we consider solutions with $m < \sqrt{2}/4$, observing again the presence of a minimal radius, but without formation of horizons. Diversely from the previous mass range, only charged solutions are allowed in this case.

Abstract:Using the earlier developed classical Hamiltonian framework as the point of departure, we carry out a non-perturbative quantization of the sector of general relativity, coupled to matter, admitting non-rotating isolated horizons as inner boundaries. The emphasis is on the quantum geometry of the horizon. Polymer excitations of the bulk quantum geometry pierce the horizon endowing it with area. The intrinsic geometry of the horizon is then described by the quantum Chern-Simons theory of a U(1) connection on a punctured 2-sphere, the horizon. Subtle mathematical features of the quantum Chern-Simons theory turn out to be important for the existence of a coherent quantum theory of the horizon geometry. Heuristically, the intrinsic geometry is flat everywhere except at the punctures. The distributional curvature of the U(1) connection at the punctures gives rise to quantized deficit angles which account for the overall curvature. For macroscopic black holes, the logarithm of the number of these horizon microstates is proportional to the area, irrespective of the values of (non-gravitational) charges. Thus, the black hole entropy can be accounted for entirely by the quantum states of the horizon geometry. Our analysis is applicable to all non-rotating black holes, including the astrophysically interesting ones which are very far from extremality. Furthermore, cosmological horizons (to which statistical mechanical considerations are known to apply) are naturally incorporated. An effort has been made to make the paper self-contained by including short reviews of the background material.
Gauss-Bonnet black holes with non-constant curvature horizons

Abstract:We investigate static and dynamical n(\ge 6)-dimensional black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity of which horizons have the isometries of an (n-2)-dimensional Einstein space with a condition on its Weyl tensor originally given by Dotti and Gleiser. Defining a generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass that satisfies the unified first law, we show that most of the properties of the quasi-local mass and the trapping horizon are shared with the case with horizons of constant curvature. It is shown that the Dotti-Gleiser solution is the unique vacuum solution if the warp factor on the (n-2)-dimensional Einstein space is non-constant. The quasi-local mass becomes constant for the Dotti-Gleiser black hole and satisfies the first law of the black-hole thermodynamics with its Wald entropy. In the non-negative curvature case with positive Gauss-Bonnet constant and zero cosmological constant, it is shown that the Dotti-Gleiser black hole is thermodynamically unstable. Even if it becomes locally stable for the non-zero cosmological constant, it cannot be globally stable for the positive cosmological constant.

Abstract:Working in a semi-classical setting, we consider solutions of the Einstein equations that exhibit light trapping in finite time according to distant observers. In spherical symmetry, we construct near-horizon quantities from the assumption of regularity of the renormalized expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, and derive explicit coordinate transformations in the near-horizon region. We examine the boundary conditions appropriate for embedding the model into a cosmological background, describe their evaporation in the linear regime and highlight the observational consequences, while also discussing the implications for the laws of black hole mechanics.

Stuffed Black Holes

Abstract:Initial data corresponding to spacetimes containing black holes are considered in the time symmetric case. The solutions are obtained by matching across the apparent horizon different, conformally flat, spatial metrics. The exterior metric is the vacuum solution obtained by the well known conformal imaging method. The interior metric for every black hole is regular everywhere and corresponds to a positive energy density. The resulting matched solutions cover then the whole initial (Cauchy) hypersurface, without any singularity, and can be useful for numerical applications. The simpler cases of one black hole (Schwarzschild data) or two identical black holes (Misner data) are explicitly solved. A procedure for extending this construction to the multiple black hole case is also given, and it is shown to work for all time symmetric vacuum solutions obtained by the conformal imaging method. The numerical evolution of one such 'stuffed' black hole is compared with that of a pure vacuum or 'plain' black hole in the spherically symmetric case.

Abstract:We prove there is a unique vacuum solution in split-signature spacetimes with Kleinian SO(2,1) spherical symmetry. We extend our analysis to accommodate a positive or negative cosmological constant and we prove the Kleinian spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein's equation are locally isomorphic to the split-signature analogs of Schwarzschild–(anti)-de Sitter or Nariai spacetimes. Our analysis provides a Kleinian extension of Birkhoff's theorem to metrics with split signature.
