Abstract:The synthesis of a novel bimetallic organic-inorganic hybrid vanadoborate K 8 Cu(en) 2 [(VO) 12 O 6 B 18 O 36 (OH) 6 ]·14H 2 O ( 1 , en = ethylenediamine) with a three-dimensional (3-D) open-framework was achieved through hydrothermal reactions. Compound 1 consists of anionic 1-D chains arranged in parallel along the [001] direction, constructed by corner-sharing [Cu(en) 2 ] 2+ cations and hamburger-like V 12 B 18 anionic clusters. The K-O polyhedra act as linkers to further connect with the 1-D chains, resulting in the 3-D architecture featuring extensive hydrogen bonding networks. Significantly, compound 1 demonstrated proton conductivity values of up to 3.09 × 10 -3 S/cm at a temperature of 318 K and under conditions of 100% relative humidity. Moreover, it exhibited an activation energy of 1.46 eV at various temperatures in the presence of complete humidity, thereby establishing compound 1 as a remarkably proficient solid conductive material.

Abstract:An elliptical vanadoborate with a novel V10B26 ratio of the formula [Ni(en)3]3·[1,3-dap]2·H6[V10B26O60(OH)10] (1; en = ethylenediamine, 1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane) was synthesized by a solvothermal method. In the structure, one [V10O30] unit and two [B13O30(OH)5] rings are superimposed alternately to form the V10B26 cluster, which is counterbalanced by the complex Ni(en)32+. In addition, V10B26 clusters interact further with organic molecules through hydrogen bonds, constructing the three-dimensional (3D) open framework with abundant hydrogen-bonding networks. Abstract:Proton conduction is a fundamental process in biology and in devices such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To maximize proton conduction, three-dimensional conduction pathways are preferred over one-dimensional pathways, which prevent conduction in two dimensions. Many crystalline porous solids to date show one-dimensional proton conduction. Here we report porous molecular cages with proton conductivities (up to 10−3 S cm−1 at high relative humidity) that compete with extended metal-organic frameworks. The structure of the organic cage imposes a conduction pathway that is necessarily three-dimensional. The cage molecules also promote proton transfer by confining the water molecules while being sufficiently flexible to allow hydrogen bond reorganization. The proton conduction is explained at the molecular level through a combination of proton conductivity measurements, crystallography, molecular simulations and quasi-elastic neutron scattering. These results provide a starting point for high-temperature, anhydrous proton conductors through inclusion of guests other than water in the cage pores.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), whose advanced electrical properties accompany their intrinsic structural characteristics, represent an exciting new class of 2D atomic crystals for the van der Waals integration of novel heterostructures and the development of novel nano/quantum devices. Guided by topology, were port two 2D MOFs (1 and 2) constructed via combination of [In(COO)(4)](-) metal nodes and tetratopic tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based linkers, with ultrahigh proton conductivity (6.66 x 10(-4) and 1.30 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively). Additionally, high electrical conductivity was simultaneously achieved with the pure protonic nature of the 2D MOF 2. The electrical conduction at the MOF-metal interface is enabled by the redox-switchable behavior of the TTF-based ligands. This unique charge-transport mechanism, protonic/pseudo-capacitance coupling, offers a new strategy for utilizing the ionic conductivity from MOFs to construct functional electronic devices.

Abstract:Through a stepwise functionalization strategy, LiCl@UiO-66-F 2 (SO 3 H) 2 manifests a superprotonic conductivity of 2.86 S cm–1 (at 90% RH and 90 °C), a record breaker so far. Supported by joint experimental–theoretical studies, the ultrahigh conductivity originates from conduction by protons rather than ions and is rationalized to result from the enhanced acidity of −SO3H by introduction of electronegative −F followed by the formation of double charged layers composed of Li+ and −SO3 – layers after encapsulation of LiCl. Importantly, the effect of charged layers has been verified, and charged-layer-mediated proton conduction is unprecedentedly proposed to fill in the missing pieces in existing proton conduction mechanisms, giving insight into the rational design of superprotonic conducting framework materials potentially applied as proton exchange membranes in fuel cells.

High proton conductivity through angstrom-porous titania

Abstract:Two dimensional (2D) crystals have attracted strong interest as a new class of proton conducting materials that can block atoms, molecules and ions while allowing proton transport through the atomically thin basal planes. Although 2D materials exhibit this perfect selectivity, the reported proton conductivities have been relatively low. Here we show that vacancy-rich titania monolayers are highly permeable to protons while remaining impermeable to helium with proton conductivity exceeding 100 S cm-2 at 200 C and surpassing targets set by industry roadmaps. The fast and selective proton transport is attributed to an extremely high density of titanium-atom vacancies (one per square nm), which effectively turns titania monolayers into angstrom-scale sieves. Our findings highlight the potential of 2D oxides as membrane materials for hydrogen-based technologies.

Controlling Electron Delocalization in Vanadium-Based Hybrid Bronzes through Molecular Templation

Abstract:We show that the conductivity of hybrid vanadium bronzes-mixed-valence organic-inorganic vanadium oxides-can be tuned over six orders of magnitude through judicious choice of molecular component. By systematically varying the steric profile, charge density, and propensity to hydrogen bond across a series of eight diammonium-based molecules, we engender multiple distinct motifs of V-O connectivity within the two-dimensional vanadium oxide layers of a family of bulk crystalline hybrid materials. A combination of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis, variable-temperature electrical transport measurements, and a range of spectroscopic methods, including UV/Visible diffuse reflectance, X-ray photoelectron, and electron paramagnetic resonance are employed to probe how vanadium oxide layer topology correlates with electron localization. Specifically, alkylammonium molecules yield hybrids featuring more corrugated layers that contain V-O tetrahedra as well as a higher ratio of corner-sharing to edge-sharing polyhedra and that exhibit highly localized electronic behavior, while alkyl bipyridinium molecules yield more regular layers with polyhedral edge-sharing that show substantially delocalized electronic behavior. This work allows for the development of design principles based on structure-property relationships and brings the charge transport capabilities of hybrid vanadium bronzes to more technologically relevant levels.
A robust zirconium amino acid metal-organic framework for proton conduction

Abstract:Proton conductive materials are of significant importance and highly desired for clean energy-related applications. Discovery of practical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high proton conduction remains a challenge due to the use of toxic chemicals, inconvenient ligand preparation and complication of production at scale for the state-of-the-art candidates. Herein, we report a zirconium-MOF, MIP-202(Zr), constructed from natural α-amino acid showing a high and steady proton conductivity of 0.011 S cm-1 at 363 K and under 95% relative humidity. This MOF features a cost-effective, green and scalable preparation with a very high space-time yield above 7000 kg m-3 day-1. It exhibits a good chemical stability under various conditions, including solutions of wide pH range and boiling water. Finally, a comprehensive molecular simulation was carried out to shed light on the proton conduction mechanism. All together these features make MIP-202(Zr) one of the most promising candidates to approach the commercial benchmark Nafion.

Abstract:Recently, research on lanthanide based polyoxometalates serving as a new type of proton conducting material holds tremendous promise for electrochemical devices. Herein, we have designed and characterized a new type 3D lanthanide silicotungstic acid proton conductor, namely La0.67(H2O)La(H2O)6 [{La(H2O)3(SiW11O39)}]·7H2O (1) under hydrothermal conditions. Compound 1 is a three-dimensional structure built from lanthanide-substituted polyoxoanion [{La(H2O)3(SiW11O39)}]5− building blocks with large number of channels filled with free water molecules. It shows a high proton conductivity of 1.26 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 90 °C under 98% RH. The activation energy of compound 1 calculated from the Arrhenius plots of the proton conductivity is 0.57 eV, which indicated the vehicle mechanism of proton transfer.

Abstract:AbstractA new porous vanadoborate was synthesized by employing the scale chemistry theory with the vanadoborate cluster V10B28. The twofold interpenetrated lvt network was assembled with zinc‐containing elliptical vanadoborate clusters and Zn polyhedra. The single lvt framework contains a three‐dimensional 38×38×20 ring channel system with the pore size (24.7×12.7 Å) reaching the mesoscale, thus indicating the possibility of constructing 3D ordered mesopores with vanadoborate clusters. The porosity of the SUT‐7 structure was confirmed by CO2 adsorption of the as‐synthesized materials.

Abstract:Herein, a method for building proton conductors that involves introducing hierarchical structure, mass transport interfaces, and host–guest interactions into the COFs is proposed. The hierarchically macros–microporous structure of the proton‐transport platforms for proton storage and mass transfer, as well as the installation of proton carriers at open channel walls for proton motion, connect the sources of conductivity and stability. Assembling molecular proton carriers into crosslinked networks is widely used to fabricate proton conductors, but they often suffer losses in conduction efficiency and stability accompanied by unclear causes. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), with well‐defined crystal frameworks and excellent stability, offer a platform for exploring the proton transfer process. Herein, a strategy to construct proton conductors that induce conductivity and stability by introducing bottom‐up hierarchical structure, mass transport interfaces, and host–guest interactions into the COFs is proposed. The proton‐transport platforms are designed to possess hierarchically macro–microporous structure for proton storage and mass transport. The protic ionic liquids, with low proton dissociation energies investigated by DFT calculation, are installed at open channel walls for faster proton motion. As expected, the resultant proton conductors based on a covalent organic framework (PIL0.5@m‐TpPa‐SO3H) with hierarchical pores increase conductivity by approximately three orders of magnitude, achieving the value of 1.02 × 10−1 S cm−1 (90 °C, 100% RH), and maintain excellent stability. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations reveal the mechanism of "hydrogen‐bond network" for proton conduction. This work offers a fresh perspective on COF‐based material manufacturing for high‐performance proton conductors via a protocol of macro‐micropores.

Abstract:Design novel solid oxide electrolyte with enhanced ionic conductivity forms one of the Holy Grails in the field of materials science due to its great potential for wide range of energy applications. Conventional solid oxide electrolyte typically requires elevated temperature to activate the ionic transportation, while it has been increasing research interests to reduce the operating temperature due to the associated scientific and technological importance. Here, we report a conceptually new solid oxide electrolyte, HSrCoO2.5, which shows an exceptional enhanced proton conductivity at low temperature region (from room temperature to 140 oC). Combining both the experimental results and corresponding first-principles calculations, we attribute these intriguing properties to the extremely-high proton concentration as well as the well-ordered oxygen vacancy channels inherited from the novel crystalline structure of HSrCoO2.5. This result provides a new strategy to design novel solid oxide electrolyte with excellent proton conductivity for wide ranges of energy-related applications.

Abstract:The development of materials showing rapid proton conduction with a low activation energy and stable performance over a wide temperature range is an important and challenging line of research. Here, we report confinement of sulfuric acid within porous MFM-300(Cr) to give MFM-300(Cr)·SO4(H3O)2, which exhibits a record-low activation energy of 0.04 eV, resulting in stable proton conductivity between 25 and 80 °C of >10-2 S cm-1. In situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXPD), neutron powder diffraction (NPD), quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation reveal the pathways of proton transport and the molecular mechanism of proton diffusion within the pores. Confined sulfuric acid species together with adsorbed water molecules play a critical role in promoting the proton transfer through this robust network to afford a material in which proton conductivity is almost temperature-independent.

Abstract:Abstract Proton conductors are attractive materials with a wide range of potential applications such as proton-conducting fuel cells (PCFCs). The conventional strategy to enhance the proton conductivity is acceptor doping into oxides without oxygen vacancies. However, the acceptor doping results in proton trapping near dopants, leading to the high apparent activation energy and low proton conductivity at intermediate and low temperatures. The hypothetical cubic perovskite BaScO 2.5 may have intrinsic oxygen vacancies without the acceptor doping. Herein, we report that the cubic perovskite-type BaSc 0.8 Mo 0.2 O 2.8 stabilized by Mo donor-doing into BaScO 2.5 exhibits high proton conductivity within the ‘Norby gap’ (e.g., 0.01 S cm −1 at 320 °C) and high chemical stability under oxidizing, reducing and CO 2 atmospheres. The high proton conductivity of BaSc 0.8 Mo 0.2 O 2.8 at intermediate and low temperatures is attributable to high proton concentration, high proton mobility due to reduced proton trapping, and three-dimensional proton diffusion in the cubic perovskite stabilized by the Mo-doping into BaScO 2.5 . The donor doping into the perovskite with disordered intrinsic oxygen vacancies would be a viable strategy towards high proton conductivity at intermediate and low temperatures.

Abstract:It is challenging to introduce pendent sulfonic acid groups into modularly built crystalline porous frameworks for intrinsic proton conduction. Herein, we report the mechanoassisted synthesis of two sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possessing one-dimensional nanoporous channels decorated with pendent sulfonic acid groups. These COFs exhibit high intrinsic proton conductivity as high as 3.96 × 10(-2) S cm(-1) with long-term stability at ambient temperature and 97% relative humidity (RH). In addition, they were blended with nonconductive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) affording a series of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) with proton conductivity up to 1.58 × 10(-2) S cm(-1) and low activation energy of 0.21 eV suggesting the Grotthuss mechanism for proton conduction. Our study has demonstrated the high intrinsic proton conductivity of COFs shedding lights on their wide applications in proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Ionically conducting oxide heterostructures provide ideal geometries for revealing interfacial effects in solid state ionics. Beyond that, they can provide a high density of heterointerfaces and thus allow for reliable studies of interfacial phenomena with respect to fundamental understanding as well as with respect to nanoionic applications. Substituting an entire single layer rather than random single ions by aliovalent impurities enables the possibility of 2D doping rather than conventional 0D doping. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this technique has never been applied to ionically conducting systems. Acceptor‐doped barium zirconate has been widely investigated, particularly for applications in clean energy technologies, most importantly for intermediate temperature fuel cells. Here, epitaxial BaZrO3–BaYOx heterostructures and in particular 2D doping of BaZrO3 by yttrium are reported. The effects on proton conductivity are studied. The results not only lead to fundamental insight into the pros and cons of 2D doping of ion conductors, but may also help improve protonic devices.

Abstract:Confining hydrated hydrogen bonds to generate proton channel is a promising strategy to promote the intrinsic proton conductivity, while high water-harvesting capacity is the key for proton-conducting material. Herein, by preinstalling proton donor groups, two covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with exceptional water adsorption capacity (2,6-DHNA-TA and 2,3-DHNA-TA) were rationally designed. 2,6-DHNA-TA possesses a hexa-leaf clover pore, and the hydroxyl groups are suspended anisotropically to the edges of adjacent pores, forming independent hydrophilic domains. 2,3-DHNA-TA is exhibits hexagonal pore, and the hydrophilic diketone group in each compartment forms a wide hydrophilic band. Grand canonical Monte Carlo method is applied to verify that water molecules are preferentially adsorbed at the hydrophilic sites, and the water-filled process initiates at predefined independent anchors and terminates in domain-limited mesopores. Free water is enriched in COFs pores and rearrange in short and dense hydrogen bonds, facilitating proton conduction at low energy barriers. The two COFs exhibit excellent proton conductivity, especially for 2,6-DHNA-TA (1.27×10-3 S cm-1), which supasses most of the reported COFs. This work extends the application of water confinement strategy to proton conduction.
