Abstract:Through a stepwise functionalization strategy, LiCl@UiO-66-F 2 (SO 3 H) 2 manifests a superprotonic conductivity of 2.86 S cm–1 (at 90% RH and 90 °C), a record breaker so far. Supported by joint experimental–theoretical studies, the ultrahigh conductivity originates from conduction by protons rather than ions and is rationalized to result from the enhanced acidity of −SO3H by introduction of electronegative −F followed by the formation of double charged layers composed of Li+ and −SO3 – layers after encapsulation of LiCl. Importantly, the effect of charged layers has been verified, and charged-layer-mediated proton conduction is unprecedentedly proposed to fill in the missing pieces in existing proton conduction mechanisms, giving insight into the rational design of superprotonic conducting framework materials potentially applied as proton exchange membranes in fuel cells.

Abstract:Owing to their inherent pore structure, porous metal organic frameworks (MOFs) can undergo postsynthetic modification, such as loading extra-framework proton carriers. However, strategies for improving the proton conductivity for nonporous MOFs are largely lacking, although increasing numbers of nonporous MOFs exhibit promising proton conductivities. Often, high humidity is required for nonporous MOFs to achieve high conductivities, but to date no clear mechanisms have been experimentally identified. Here we describe the new materials MFM-550(M), [M(HL1)], (H4L1 = biphenyl-4,4'-diphosphonic acid; M = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Ho), MFM-550(Ba), [Ba(H2L1)], and MFM-555(M), [M(HL2)], (H4L2 = benzene-1,4-diphosphonic acid; M = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Ho), and report enhanced proton conductivities in these nonporous materials by (i) replacing the metal ion to one with a lower oxidation state, (ii) reducing the length of the organic ligand, and (iii) introducing additional acidic protons on the MOF surface. Increased framework proton density in these materials can lead to an enhancement in proton conductivity of up to 4 orders of magnitude. Additionally, we report a comprehensive investigation using in situ H-2 NMR and neutron spectroscopy, coupled with molecular dynamic modeling, to elucidate the role of humidity in assembling interconnected networks for proton hopping. This study constructs a relationship between framework proton density and the corresponding proton conductivity in nonporous MOFs, and directly explains the role of both surface protons and external water in assembling the proton conduction pathways.
A robust zirconium amino acid metal-organic framework for proton conduction

Abstract:Proton conductive materials are of significant importance and highly desired for clean energy-related applications. Discovery of practical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high proton conduction remains a challenge due to the use of toxic chemicals, inconvenient ligand preparation and complication of production at scale for the state-of-the-art candidates. Herein, we report a zirconium-MOF, MIP-202(Zr), constructed from natural α-amino acid showing a high and steady proton conductivity of 0.011 S cm-1 at 363 K and under 95% relative humidity. This MOF features a cost-effective, green and scalable preparation with a very high space-time yield above 7000 kg m-3 day-1. It exhibits a good chemical stability under various conditions, including solutions of wide pH range and boiling water. Finally, a comprehensive molecular simulation was carried out to shed light on the proton conduction mechanism. All together these features make MIP-202(Zr) one of the most promising candidates to approach the commercial benchmark Nafion.
Acidic Groups Functionalized Carbon Dots Capping Channels of a Proton Conductive Metal–Organic Framework by Coordination Bonds to Improve the Water-Retention Capacity and Boost Proton Conduction

Abstract:Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been demonstrated to be versatile material platforms for the development of solid proton conductors. However, most crystalline porous proton conductors suffer from decreasing proton conductivity with increasing temperature due to releasing water molecules, and this disadvantage severely restricts their practical application in electrochemical devices. In this work, for the first time, hydrophilic carbon dots (CDs) were utilized to hybridize with high proton conductivity MOF-802, which is a model of MOF proton conductors, aiming to improve its water-retention capacity and thus enhance proton conduction. The resultant CDs@MOF-802 exhibits impregnable proton conduction with increasing temperature, and the proton conductivity reaches 10-1 S cm-1, much superior to that of MOF-802, making CDs@MOF-802 one of the most efficient MOF proton conductors reported so far. This study provides a new strategy to improve the water-retention capacity of porous proton conductors and further realize excellent proton conduction.

Abstract:The development of materials showing rapid proton conduction with a low activation energy and stable performance over a wide temperature range is an important and challenging line of research. Here, we report confinement of sulfuric acid within porous MFM-300(Cr) to give MFM-300(Cr)·SO4(H3O)2, which exhibits a record-low activation energy of 0.04 eV, resulting in stable proton conductivity between 25 and 80 °C of >10-2 S cm-1. In situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXPD), neutron powder diffraction (NPD), quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation reveal the pathways of proton transport and the molecular mechanism of proton diffusion within the pores. Confined sulfuric acid species together with adsorbed water molecules play a critical role in promoting the proton transfer through this robust network to afford a material in which proton conductivity is almost temperature-independent.
High H2O-Assisted Proton Conduction in One Highly Stable Sr(II)-Organic Framework Constructed by Tetrazole-Based Imidazole Dicarboxylic Acid

Abstract:Solid electrolyte materials with high structural stability and excellent proton conductivity (σ) have long been a popular and challenging research topic in the fuel cell field. This problem can be addressed because of the crystalline metal–organic frameworks' (MOFs') high structural stability, adjustable framework composition, and dense H-bonded networks. Herein, one highly stable Sr(II) MOF, {[Sr(H2tmidc)2(H2O)3]·4H2O}n (1) (H3tmidc = 2-(1H-tetrazolium-1-methylene)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) was successfully fabricated, which was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electrochemically examined by the AC impedance determination. The results demonstrated that the σ of the compound manifested a positive dependence on temperature and humidity, and the optimal proton conductivity is as high as 1.22 × 10−2 S/cm under 100 °C and 98% relative humidity, which is at the forefront of reported MOFs with ultrahigh σ. The analysis of the proton conduction mechanism reveals that numerous tetrazolium groups, carboxyl groups, coordination, and crystallization water molecules in the framework are responsible for the high efficiency of proton transport. This work offers a fresh perspective on how to create novel crystalline proton conductive materials.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a type of proton conductive materials have gained much achievements. Here, an acylamide-functionalized 3D metal-organic framework [Ni3(TPBTC)2(stp)2(H2O)4]·2DMA·32H2O has been successfully constructed via combining Ni(NO3)2, TPBTC (TPBTC = Benzene-1, 3, 5-tricarboxylic acid tris-pyridin-4-ylamide) and 2-H2stp (2-H2stp = 2-sulfoterephthalic acid monosodium salt) under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) revealed that there are uncoordinated guest DMA molecules in the pores of compound. On removal of guest DMA molecules, the proton conductivity of the compound increased to 2.25 × 10-3 S cm−1 under 80°C and 98% RH which is about 110 times of the original material. It is hoped that this work can provide the essential insight for designing and obtaining more excellent crystalline-state proton conducting materials by considering the influences of guest molecules on proton-conduction properties of porous materials.

Abstract:Proton-conductive materials are the most important components in fuel cells. At present, there are still significant challenges for the controllable design of anhydrous proton electrolytes with high conductivity at high temperature (>80 °C). Herein, we propose proton conduction across heterogeneous channels in a metal–organic frameworks/covalent–organic frameworks hybrid (MOFs@COFs). The imidazole molecules are encapsulated into core–shell UiO-67@TAPB-DMTP-COFs (TAPB = 1,3,5-tri(4-aminophenyl)benzene, DMTP = 2,5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde), and they achieve the highest anhydrous proton conductivity (σ = 1.4 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 120 °C) with ultra-low activation energy. The synergism of porous MOFs@COFs heterostructures is of great significance for the improvement of the proton conduction, which is due to the rearrangement of hydrogen bonds and the enhanced transport of protons across the unique heterogeneous channels. This work provides a novel platform based on a MOFs@COFs hybrid for high-temperature anhydrous proton conduction.

Abstract:Developing proton–conducting electrolytes that are usable over a wide temperature range (25–150 °C) is highly desirable to enhance the efficiency of fuel cells for on-board automotive applications. Increasing the stability of water above its boiling point is considered one possible method to maintain the hydrogen bond network in composite materials for fast proton conduction. We herein propose an approach to encapsulate LiBr into a negatively charged metal–organic framework of (H3O)[(UO2)4(2-pmb)3(H2O)3]·0.5H2O (1) [2-pmbH3 = 2-(phosphonomethyl)benzoic acid] to enhance the water stability at high temperatures and inhibit the migration of Li ions by Coulombic interactions induced by anionic skeletons. The resulting composite shows a superprotonic conductivity of over 10–2 S cm–1 and a low activation energy of less than 0.4 eV in an anhydrous N2 atmosphere from ambient temperature to 110 °C. Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks(HOFs) have been well recognizedfor constructing solid-state proton-conducting materials due to theirinherent well-defined H-bonded networks; however, the design and synthesisof stable HOFs showing ultrahigh superprotonic conductivity is stillchallenging. Herein, we reported a facile and effective syntheticstrategy to build high proton-conducting metalo hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganicframeworks (MHOFs) through charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons.The supramolecular self-assembly of simple metal salts and tetra-carboxylicacids gives rise to two hydrogen-bonded frameworks, [M(H2O)(6)][H(2)tcba] (M = Zn2+, Ni2+; H(4)tcba = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid). X-raycrystallography and gas adsorption confirmed the nonporous natureof the HOIFs. Variable-temperature single-crystal and powder X-raydiffraction experiments reveal the thermal and water stability ofthe supramolecular structures sustained by exclusively charge-assistedhydrogen bonds. The high density of carboxylic acid groups and coordinatedwater molecules provide ample protons and hydrophilic environmentsfor efficient proton transport; therefore, variable-temperature and-humidity electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that MHOFsare good supramolecular proton conductors with conductivities up to1.1 x 10(-2) and 2.1 x 10(-2) S center dot cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively, at 80 degrees C under 97% RH. Our study demonstratesgreat potential of charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthonsin the design and construction of proton-conducting HOIFs. Two supramolecular proton conductorssynthesized throughcharge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons were reported to showconductivity up to 10(-2) S cm(-1) level because of exclusively charge-assisted hydrogen bonding networks.
Water-Mediated Proton Conduction in Metal–Organic Frameworks with High Water Stability Constructed by a Terpyridine Tricarboxylate Ligand

Abstract:In this work, we design and synthesize one organic molecule solid-state material and three metal–organic frameworks, (H3tcpb·H2O) n (H3tcpb-H2O), [Mn2(Htcpb)(μ3-SO4)(H2O)2]·H2O} n (1), {[Co(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·0.5CH3CN·H2O} n (2), and {[Ni(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·H2O} n (3), based on 2-(6-phenyl-[2,3′-bipyridin]-4-yl)benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3tcpb) to study their proton transport pathways and conducting mechanisms. The electrochemical experimental results demonstrated that the finest proton conductivity (σ) value of 1 modified by sulfate anions can reach as high as 5.83 × 10–3 S·cm–1 being approximately three times greater than that of H3tcpb-H2O (1.90 × 10–3 S·cm–1). Meanwhile, the finest σ values of two isomeric 2 and 3 being 3.14 × 10–3 and 3.08 × 10–3 S·cm–1, respectively, are also higher than the value of H3tcpb-H2O. This report demonstrates that the finest σ values of H3tcpb-H2O and 1–3 are all in line with the demand for high-protonic conductors, which sparks us to bring about better proton-conducting crystalline materials.

Abstract:Developing novel proton-conducting materials is crucial to improve the energy conversion performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, especially under the condition of low humidity. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have expressed an apparent potential in proton conduction applications due to their orderly and tunable structure. Previous studies mainly focus on the MOFs modified with homogeneous functional groups to tune the proton conductivities. In this study, an acid-base pair synergistic strategy, namely introducing the acidic and basic groups into mix-linker MOF simultaneously to obtain acid-base coexistence materials, was firstly proposed to improve the proton conduction performance at 75% RH. Herein, 10 kinds of ML-UiO-66-(A) (B)-X were synthesized and the effects of content and ratio of acid-base pairs in MOF matrix on proton-conducting properties were studied. It was found that ML-UiO-66-(NH2) (SO3H)-5:5 possessed the highest proton conduction in the ML-UiO-66 materials, with the value of 2.8 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 353 K. In addition, at 303K, 75% RH, the proton conductivity of ML-UiO-66-(NH2) (SO3H)-5:5 reached 7.4 × 10−3 S cm−1, which is three orders of magnitude higher than pristine UiO-66 (∼980 times), two orders of magnitude higher than the base-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 (∼529 times) and about 218% higher than the acid-functionalized UiO-66-SO3H at 97% RH. The results show that at relatively lower humidity 75%, ML-UiO-66-(NH2) (SO3H)-5:5 has the better proton conductivity than other UiO-66 materials at nearly 100% RH. Meanwhile, ML-UiO-66-(NH2) (SO3H)-5:5 shows high water and thermal stability under high humidity and high temperature, which ensures its application in complex environment. Performance and mechanism studies show that the strategy of introducing acid-base pair into MOF matrix may open an avenue to design novel proton-conducting materials with excellent properties.

Abstract:Although metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and metalo hydrogen‐bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs) are designed as promising solid‐state proton conductors by incorporating various protonic species intrinsically or extrinsically, design and development of such materials by employing the concept of proton conduction through coordinated polar protic solvent is largely unexplored. Herein, we have constructed two proton‐conducting materials having different solvent coordinated metal cationic species: In‐H2O‐MOF, ({[In(H2O)6][In3(Pzdc)6]·15H2O}n; H2Pzdc: pyrazine‐2,3‐dicarboxylic acid) with coordinated water molecules from hexaaquaindium cationic species, and MHOF‐4, ([{Co(NH3)6}2(2,6‐NDS)2(H2O)2]n; 2,6‐H2NDS: 2,6‐naphthalenedisulfonic acid) with coordinated ammonia from hexaammoniacobalt cationic species. Interestingly, higher proton conductivity was achieved for In‐H2O‐MOF (1.5 × 10‐5 S cm‐1) than MHOF‐4 (6.3 × 10‐6 S cm‐1) under the extreme conditions (80 oC and 95% RH), which could be attributed to enhanced acidity of coordinated water molecules having much lower pKa value than that of coordinated ammonia. Greater charge polarization on hydrogen atoms of In3+‐coordinated water molecules than that of Co2+‐coordinated ammonia led to the high conductivity of In‐H2O‐MOF, as evident by quantum chemical studies. Such a comparative study on metal‐coordinated protic polar solvents in achieving proton conduction in crystalline solids is yet to be made.

Abstract:A new 3D anionic metal-organic framework material, namely, [Me2NH2]2[Cd3(L)]·2H2O (1, H4L = 2,5′-di(3′,5′-dicarboxylphenyl)pyridine) has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, PXRD, thermogravimetric analysis and proton conduction investigation. In 1, the adjacent Cd(II) ions are joined to form a trinuclear [Cd3(COO)8] secondary building unit (SBU) by eight bridging carboxylate groups of L4− ligands. The trinuclear [Cd3(COO)8] SBUs are connected by L4− ligands into a 3D (4,8)-connected framework with 1D channels. Most interestingly, due to the guest [Me2NH2]+ cations, water molecules and carboxylates sites are lined the pore channels, 1 possesses a remarkable proton conductivity of 1.12 × 10−1 S cm−1 at 60 °C and 98% RH, which is comparable to commercially available Nafion. The mechanism of proton conduction was also well discussed.

We report here an anion exchangeable cationic metal organic framework with the formula of [Ce(Ccbp)(2)]Br0.25Cl0.75 center dot 6H(2)O center dot 2DMF (compound 1), which is constructed through the self-assembly of zwitterionic-based ligands H(2)CcbpBr (H(2)CcbpBr = 4-carboxy-1-(4-carboxybenzyl)pyridinium bromide) and (NH4)(2)Ce(NO3)(6). During the investigation of humidity dependent proton conduction behavior, we.observed a rate case of rapid water-induced single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transformation from compound 1 to a neutral chain [Ce(Ccbp)(3)(H2O)(3)]center dot 8H(2)O (compound 2). This structural transformation originates from the coordination of water to Ce(III) metal centers, distortion of ligands, and the soft nature of the Cationic framework 1, as probed and confirmed by a variety of investigations including color change; water vapor adsorption measurement, powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, humidity-dependent proton-conducting measurements, IR and UV-vis spectroscopies, and thermogravimetric analysis. As a consequence, this process introduces significant amounts of both coordinated and lattice water molecules into the structure, further giving rise to a decent water-assisted proton conductivity of 1.104 X 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 368 K and 95% relative humidity.

Abstract:Mimicking proton conduction mechanism of Nafion to construct novel proton-conducting materials with low cost and high proton conductivity is of wide interest. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a cationic covalent organic framework with high thermal and chemical stability by combining a cationic monomer, ethidium bromide (EB) (3,8-diamino-5-ethyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium bromide), with 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) in Schiff base reactions. This is the first time that the stable cationic crystalline frameworks allowed for the fabrication of a series of charged COFs (EB-COF:X, X = F, Cl, Br, I) through ion exchange processes. Exchange of the extra framework ions can finely modulate the COFs' porosity and pore sizes at nanoscale. More importantly, by introducing PW12O40(3-) into this porous cationic framework, we can greatly enhance the proton conductivity of ionic COF-based material. To the best of our knowledge, EB-COF:PW12 shows the best proton conductivity at room temperature among ever reported porous organic materials.

Thermal-Response Proton Conduction in Schiff Base-Incorporated Metal-Organic Framework Hybrid Membranes under Low Humidity Based on the Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Mechanism

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive proton conduction materials have attracted enormous interest as a new kind of "smart material". It is desirable to develop the appropriate stimulus signal and high proton-conducting materials with an excellent proton-conducting switch ratio (γ), but it remains a great challenge. Here, it can be found for the first time that 4-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)benzenesulfonic acid (HBABSA) has obvious thermal isomerization when porous solids act as matrixes at the ambient temperatures, which is different from that in the crystalline state at 77 K. Therefore, we proposed a host-guest metal-organic framework (MOF) composite, namely, MOF-808 incorporated with HBABSA (HBABSA@MOF-808), which has a proton-conducting switch ratio (γ) of 16 between 338 and 343 K due to the thermally induced isomerization of HBABSA molecules in the MOF pores. The strong binding between the keto-type HBABSA and MOF at the relatively low temperatures can efficiently suppress the proton conduction, while the enol-type one provides more mobile protons for conduction at the high temperatures due to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer mechanism. Further, the HBABSA@MOF-808 as a filler is blended into polyvinyl alcohol and poly(2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) to form hybrid membranes. The hybrid membrane with the highest content of the MOF composite displays a high proton conductivity of 5.57 × 10-3 S·cm-1 under 353 K and 57% RH along with a good switch ratio of 5.4. The development of thermal-response proton-conducting MOF materials is opening up a unique pathway for remote control, thermal sensing, intelligent batteries, and other fields.

Abstract:Obtaining crystalline materials with high structural stability as well as super proton conductivity is a challenging task in the field of energy and material chemistry . Therefore, two highly stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macro-ring structures and carboxylate groups, Zr-TCPP ( 1 ) and Hf-TCPP ( 2 ) assembled from low-toxicity as well as highly coordination-capable Zr(IV)/Hf(IV) cations and the multifunctional linkage, meso -tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine (TCPP) have attracted our strong interest. Note that TCPP as a large-size rigid ligand with high symmetry and multiple coordination sites contributes to the formation of the two stable MOFs. Moreover, the pores with large sizes in the two MOFs favor the entry of more guest water molecules and thus result in high H 2 O-assisted proton conductivity. First, their distinguished structural stabilities covering water, thermal and chemical stabilities were verified by various determination approaches. Second, the dependence of the proton conductivity of the two MOFs on temperature and relative humidity (RH) is explored in depth. Impressively, MOFs 1 and 2 demonstrated the optimal proton conductivities of 4.5 × 10 −4 and 0.78 × 10 −3 S·cm −1 at 100 °C/98 % RH, respectively. Logically, based on the structural information, gas adsorption/desorption features, and activation energy values, their proton conduction mechanism was deduced and highlighted.

Abstract:Developing new materials for anhydrous proton conduction under high-temperature conditions is significant and challenging. Herein, we create a series of highly crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) via a pore engineering approach. We simultaneously engineer the pore geometry (generating concave dodecagonal nanopores) and pore surface (installing multiple functional groups such as -C=N-, -OH, -N=N- and -CF3 ) to improve the utilization efficiency and host-guest interaction of proton carriers, hence benefiting the enhancement of anhydrous proton conduction. Upon loading with H3 PO4 , COFs can realize a proton conductivity of 2.33×10-2 S cm-1 under anhydrous conditions, among the highest values of all COF materials. These materials demonstrate good stability and maintain high proton conductivity over a wide temperature range (80-160 °C). This work paves a new way for designing COFs for anhydrous proton conduction applications, which shows great potential as high-temperature proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Three multi-carboxylic acid functionalised ligands have been designed, synthesised and utilised to prepare the new barium-based MOFs, MFM-510, -511, and -512, which show excellent stability to water-vapour. MFM-510 and MFM-511 show moderate proton conductivities (2.1 × 10-5 and 5.1 × 10-5 S cm-1, respectively) at 99% RH and 298 K, attributed to the lack of free protons or hindered proton diffusion within the framework structures. In contrast, MFM-512, which incorporates a pendant carboxylic acid group directed into the pore of the framework, shows a two orders of magnitude enhancement in proton conductivity (2.9 × 10-3 S cm-1). Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) suggests that the proton dynamics of MFM-512 are mediated by "free diffusion inside a sphere" confirming that incorporation of free carboxylic acid groups within the pores of MOFs is an efficient albeit synthetically challenging strategy to improve proton conductivity.
