Abstract:A proton-conductive organic/inorganic hybrid complex {[Cu(H2O)8][H(H2O)3](HINO)4(PW12O40)}n, was constructed by a self-assembly of H+(H2O)3 clusters, [Cu(H2O)8]2+ clusters, [PW12O40]3− anions and isonicotinic acid N-oxide (HINO). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at 293K revealed that the title complex presented exactly a three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen-bonded network with large one-dimensional (1D) channels. Interestingly, [PW12O40]3− anions just filled in the 1D channels and self-assembled into poly-Keggin-anion chains. Thermogravimetric analysis shows no weight loss in the temperature range of 20–100°C, indicating that all water molecules in the unit structure are not easily lost below 100°C. The title complex was characterized by a satisfactory ionic conductivity (1–2×10−3Scm−1) in the temperature range 85 to 100°C only. However, it is two orders of magnitude lower than that of Nafion membrane. A possible mechanism of the proton conduction was proposed according to the experimental results.

Abstract:The synthesis of a novel bimetallic organic-inorganic hybrid vanadoborate K 8 Cu(en) 2 [(VO) 12 O 6 B 18 O 36 (OH) 6 ]·14H 2 O ( 1 , en = ethylenediamine) with a three-dimensional (3-D) open-framework was achieved through hydrothermal reactions. Compound 1 consists of anionic 1-D chains arranged in parallel along the [001] direction, constructed by corner-sharing [Cu(en) 2 ] 2+ cations and hamburger-like V 12 B 18 anionic clusters. The K-O polyhedra act as linkers to further connect with the 1-D chains, resulting in the 3-D architecture featuring extensive hydrogen bonding networks. Significantly, compound 1 demonstrated proton conductivity values of up to 3.09 × 10 -3 S/cm at a temperature of 318 K and under conditions of 100% relative humidity. Moreover, it exhibited an activation energy of 1.46 eV at various temperatures in the presence of complete humidity, thereby establishing compound 1 as a remarkably proficient solid conductive material.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks(HOFs) have been well recognizedfor constructing solid-state proton-conducting materials due to theirinherent well-defined H-bonded networks; however, the design and synthesisof stable HOFs showing ultrahigh superprotonic conductivity is stillchallenging. Herein, we reported a facile and effective syntheticstrategy to build high proton-conducting metalo hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganicframeworks (MHOFs) through charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons.The supramolecular self-assembly of simple metal salts and tetra-carboxylicacids gives rise to two hydrogen-bonded frameworks, [M(H2O)(6)][H(2)tcba] (M = Zn2+, Ni2+; H(4)tcba = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid). X-raycrystallography and gas adsorption confirmed the nonporous natureof the HOIFs. Variable-temperature single-crystal and powder X-raydiffraction experiments reveal the thermal and water stability ofthe supramolecular structures sustained by exclusively charge-assistedhydrogen bonds. The high density of carboxylic acid groups and coordinatedwater molecules provide ample protons and hydrophilic environmentsfor efficient proton transport; therefore, variable-temperature and-humidity electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that MHOFsare good supramolecular proton conductors with conductivities up to1.1 x 10(-2) and 2.1 x 10(-2) S center dot cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively, at 80 degrees C under 97% RH. Our study demonstratesgreat potential of charge-assisted inorganic and organic synthonsin the design and construction of proton-conducting HOIFs. Two supramolecular proton conductorssynthesized throughcharge-assisted inorganic and organic synthons were reported to showconductivity up to 10(-2) S cm(-1) level because of exclusively charge-assisted hydrogen bonding networks.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte materials with high structural stability and excellent proton conductivity (σ) have long been a popular and challenging research topic in the fuel cell field. This problem can be addressed because of the crystalline metal–organic frameworks' (MOFs') high structural stability, adjustable framework composition, and dense H-bonded networks. Herein, one highly stable Sr(II) MOF, {[Sr(H2tmidc)2(H2O)3]·4H2O}n (1) (H3tmidc = 2-(1H-tetrazolium-1-methylene)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) was successfully fabricated, which was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electrochemically examined by the AC impedance determination. The results demonstrated that the σ of the compound manifested a positive dependence on temperature and humidity, and the optimal proton conductivity is as high as 1.22 × 10−2 S/cm under 100 °C and 98% relative humidity, which is at the forefront of reported MOFs with ultrahigh σ. The analysis of the proton conduction mechanism reveals that numerous tetrazolium groups, carboxyl groups, coordination, and crystallization water molecules in the framework are responsible for the high efficiency of proton transport. This work offers a fresh perspective on how to create novel crystalline proton conductive materials.

Abstract:Confining hydrated hydrogen bonds to generate proton channel is a promising strategy to promote the intrinsic proton conductivity, while high water-harvesting capacity is the key for proton-conducting material. Herein, by preinstalling proton donor groups, two covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with exceptional water adsorption capacity (2,6-DHNA-TA and 2,3-DHNA-TA) were rationally designed. 2,6-DHNA-TA possesses a hexa-leaf clover pore, and the hydroxyl groups are suspended anisotropically to the edges of adjacent pores, forming independent hydrophilic domains. 2,3-DHNA-TA is exhibits hexagonal pore, and the hydrophilic diketone group in each compartment forms a wide hydrophilic band. Grand canonical Monte Carlo method is applied to verify that water molecules are preferentially adsorbed at the hydrophilic sites, and the water-filled process initiates at predefined independent anchors and terminates in domain-limited mesopores. Free water is enriched in COFs pores and rearrange in short and dense hydrogen bonds, facilitating proton conduction at low energy barriers. The two COFs exhibit excellent proton conductivity, especially for 2,6-DHNA-TA (1.27×10-3 S cm-1), which supasses most of the reported COFs. This work extends the application of water confinement strategy to proton conduction.

Abstract:Searching for new host materials tailored for the high proton conductivity is highly desirable for the new generation of fuel cell system. We report here an anion exchangeable cationic metal organic framework with the formula of [Ce(Ccbp)(2)]Br0.25Cl0.75 center dot 6H(2)O center dot 2DMF (compound 1), which is constructed through the self-assembly of zwitterionic-based ligands H(2)CcbpBr (H(2)CcbpBr = 4-carboxy-1-(4-carboxybenzyl)pyridinium bromide) and (NH4)(2)Ce(NO3)(6). During the investigation of humidity dependent proton conduction behavior, we.observed a rate case of rapid water-induced single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transformation from compound 1 to a neutral chain [Ce(Ccbp)(3)(H2O)(3)]center dot 8H(2)O (compound 2). This structural transformation originates from the coordination of water to Ce(III) metal centers, distortion of ligands, and the soft nature of the Cationic framework 1, as probed and confirmed by a variety of investigations including color change; water vapor adsorption measurement, powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, humidity-dependent proton-conducting measurements, IR and UV-vis spectroscopies, and thermogravimetric analysis. As a consequence, this process introduces significant amounts of both coordinated and lattice water molecules into the structure, further giving rise to a decent water-assisted proton conductivity of 1.104 X 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 368 K and 95% relative humidity.

Abstract:Selecting aromatic polycarboxylic acid ligands to self-assemble metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with good water stability and proton conductivity is an expected preparation strategy. Herein, three proton conductive MOFs, 3D {[Zn2(1,2,4,5-BTA)](4,4′-tmdp)2]·5H2O}n (1) (1,2,4,5-H4BTA = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid; 4,4′-tmdp = 4,4′-trimethylenedipyridine), 2D {[Zn2(1,2,4,5-BTA)(4,4′-tmdp)(H2O)3]·2.25H2O}n (2), 3D {Cd(1,2,4,5-BTA)0.5}n (3) have been synthesized according to the literature method or hydrothermal method and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other approaches. All three MOFs have excellent thermal and water stability. EIS determinations show that with the increase of temperature and humidity, their proton conductivities gradually enhanced. Note that at 100 °C and 98% RH, their optimal proton conductivity values can attain about 10-4 S cm-1, which are higher than those of similar MOFs. Consequently, their proton conduction properties and mechanism were compared and speculated on the basis of activation energy calculation and crystal data analyses. We firmly believe that this research will provide new opportunities for the design and preparation of multicarboxylic acid-based crystalline proton conducting materials.

Abstract:It is challenging to introduce pendent sulfonic acid groups into modularly built crystalline porous frameworks for intrinsic proton conduction. Herein, we report the mechanoassisted synthesis of two sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possessing one-dimensional nanoporous channels decorated with pendent sulfonic acid groups. These COFs exhibit high intrinsic proton conductivity as high as 3.96 × 10(-2) S cm(-1) with long-term stability at ambient temperature and 97% relative humidity (RH). In addition, they were blended with nonconductive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) affording a series of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) with proton conductivity up to 1.58 × 10(-2) S cm(-1) and low activation energy of 0.21 eV suggesting the Grotthuss mechanism for proton conduction. Our study has demonstrated the high intrinsic proton conductivity of COFs shedding lights on their wide applications in proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Developing new materials for anhydrous proton conduction under high-temperature conditions is significant and challenging. Herein, we create a series of highly crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) via a pore engineering approach. We simultaneously engineer the pore geometry (generating concave dodecagonal nanopores) and pore surface (installing multiple functional groups such as -C=N-, -OH, -N=N- and -CF3 ) to improve the utilization efficiency and host-guest interaction of proton carriers, hence benefiting the enhancement of anhydrous proton conduction. Upon loading with H3 PO4 , COFs can realize a proton conductivity of 2.33×10-2 S cm-1 under anhydrous conditions, among the highest values of all COF materials. These materials demonstrate good stability and maintain high proton conductivity over a wide temperature range (80-160 °C). This work paves a new way for designing COFs for anhydrous proton conduction applications, which shows great potential as high-temperature proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:In this work, we design and synthesize one organic molecule solid-state material and three metal–organic frameworks, (H3tcpb·H2O) n (H3tcpb-H2O), [Mn2(Htcpb)(μ3-SO4)(H2O)2]·H2O} n (1), {[Co(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·0.5CH3CN·H2O} n (2), and {[Ni(Htcpb)(H2O)3]·H2O} n (3), based on 2-(6-phenyl-[2,3′-bipyridin]-4-yl)benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3tcpb) to study their proton transport pathways and conducting mechanisms. The electrochemical experimental results demonstrated that the finest proton conductivity (σ) value of 1 modified by sulfate anions can reach as high as 5.83 × 10–3 S·cm–1 being approximately three times greater than that of H3tcpb-H2O (1.90 × 10–3 S·cm–1). Meanwhile, the finest σ values of two isomeric 2 and 3 being 3.14 × 10–3 and 3.08 × 10–3 S·cm–1, respectively, are also higher than the value of H3tcpb-H2O. This report demonstrates that the finest σ values of H3tcpb-H2O and 1–3 are all in line with the demand for high-protonic conductors, which sparks us to bring about better proton-conducting crystalline materials.

Abstract:Two ionic hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (iHOF-10, iHOF-11) were prepared using 1,1 '-diamino-4,4 '-bipyridine diiodide (Dbpy . 2I) and tetrakis(4-sulfophenyl)ethylene (H4TPE). With increasing RH and temperature, water molecules induce single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation of iHOF-10, resulting in the formation of iHOF-11. At 90 degrees C, 98 % RH, the proton conductivity of iHOF-11 (7.03x10(-3) S cm(-1)) is 2.09 times higher than iHOF-10 (3.37x10(-3) S cm(-1)). At 50 degrees C, 98 % RH, iHOF-11 (9.49x10(-4) S cm(-1)) is 19.06 times higher than iHOF-10 (4.98x10(-5) S cm(-1)). The proton conductivity shows water molecules enter the crystal and induce crystal transformation and reorganization of the hydrogen bonding structure, thus increasing the proton conductivity and stability.

Abstract:Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been demonstrated to be versatile material platforms for the development of solid proton conductors. However, most crystalline porous proton conductors suffer from decreasing proton conductivity with increasing temperature due to releasing water molecules, and this disadvantage severely restricts their practical application in electrochemical devices. In this work, for the first time, hydrophilic carbon dots (CDs) were utilized to hybridize with high proton conductivity MOF-802, which is a model of MOF proton conductors, aiming to improve its water-retention capacity and thus enhance proton conduction. The resultant CDs@MOF-802 exhibits impregnable proton conduction with increasing temperature, and the proton conductivity reaches 10<sup>-1</sup> S cm<sup>-1</sup>, much superior to that of MOF-802, making CDs@MOF-802 one of the most efficient MOF proton conductors reported so far. This study provides a new strategy to improve the water-retention capacity of porous proton conductors and further realize excellent proton conduction.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with inherent well-defined hydrogen-bond networks are promising proton conduction materials. Herein, four three-dimensional HOFs were controllably assembled from 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid and guanidinium of different chain lengths with certain ratios, in which GC-1 has undergone a water-induced single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation to a more stable GC-2 with successive π–π stacking interactions. Notably, the ideal single-crystal sample of GC-2 exhibits an ultrahigh proton conductivity of 1.78 × 10–2 S cm–1 along the [100] direction at ambient temperature and 98% RH. This sample is highly anisotropic with 3–5 orders of magnitude higher than those along the [010] and [001] directions, which is closely related to favorable proton-transfer paths of 1D highly hydrophilic channels formed by the consecutive hydrogen-bonded network between protonated guanidinium cations and carboxylic acid anions along the a-axis direction. Compared with the pelletized samples of GC-2, GC-3, and GC-4, their composite membranes with Nafion show significant enhancement of proton conduction with remarkable values of 1.33 × 10–1, 1.92 × 10–1, and 1.98 × 10–1 S cm–1 at 338 K and 98% RH, indicating great application potential.

Abstract:Obtaining crystalline materials with high structural stability as well as super proton conductivity is a challenging task in the field of energy and material chemistry . Therefore, two highly stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macro-ring structures and carboxylate groups, Zr-TCPP ( 1 ) and Hf-TCPP ( 2 ) assembled from low-toxicity as well as highly coordination-capable Zr(IV)/Hf(IV) cations and the multifunctional linkage, meso -tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine (TCPP) have attracted our strong interest. Note that TCPP as a large-size rigid ligand with high symmetry and multiple coordination sites contributes to the formation of the two stable MOFs. Moreover, the pores with large sizes in the two MOFs favor the entry of more guest water molecules and thus result in high H 2 O-assisted proton conductivity. First, their distinguished structural stabilities covering water, thermal and chemical stabilities were verified by various determination approaches. Second, the dependence of the proton conductivity of the two MOFs on temperature and relative humidity (RH) is explored in depth. Impressively, MOFs 1 and 2 demonstrated the optimal proton conductivities of 4.5 × 10 −4 and 0.78 × 10 −3 S·cm −1 at 100 °C/98 % RH, respectively. Logically, based on the structural information, gas adsorption/desorption features, and activation energy values, their proton conduction mechanism was deduced and highlighted.

Abstract:Compared with the proton-conducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed by transition metals and rare earth metals, there are fewer main group metal-based MOFs with proton-conducting ability. From the point of view of basic research, it is extremely important to prepare more main group metal-based MOFs to explore their proton conductivity and mechanism. Herein, a new highly stable three-dimensional Pb(II) MOF, [Pb2(p-IPhH2IDC)2(C2O4)]n (1) (p-IPhH3IDC = p-N-imidazole-1-yl)-phenyl-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) constructed by imidazole dicarboxylate and oxalate ligands was solvothermally prepared, which can hold its structural rigid after soaking in water or acidic and basic solutions. Its water-assisted proton conductivity was examined under different relative humidities and variable temperatures, and boosted with increasing temperature and humidity. In terms of crystal structural analysis, calculated activation energy (E a) value, H2O vapor absorption and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) determinations, the proton conducting mechanism of 1 was speculated as well.

Abstract:Polyoxometalate-functionalized metal-organic frameworks featuring uniform proton-conducting pathways in three orthogonal directions, good water retention and stability were prepared. The proton conductivity of the hybrid material was observed to increase by 5 orders of magnitude compared to that of the parent material HKUST-1.
