Abstract:In this work we present the electronic band structure for (001)--CdTe interfaces with some other II--VI zinc blende semiconductors. We assume ideal interfaces. We use tight binding Hamiltonians with an orthogonal basis ($s p^3 s^*$). We make use of the well--known Surface Green's Function Matching method to calculate the interface band structure. In our calculation the dominion of the interface is constituted by four atomic layers. We consider here anion--anion interfaces only. We have included the non common either anion or cation (CdTe/ZnSe), common cation (CdTe/CdSe), and common anion (CdTe/ZnTe) cases. We have aligned the top of the the valence band at the whole interface dominion as the boundary condition. The overall conclusion is that the interface is a very rich space where changes in the band structure with respect to the bulk do occur. This is true not only at interfaces with no common atoms but also at the ones with either common cation or anion atoms irrespective to the fact that the common atomic layers are facing or not each other at the interface. Finally, we found that the (001)--surface--induced bulks states reappear at the interface in contrast to the pure (001)--surface resonances which disappear. This confirm our previous interpretation of such states as {\it bulk} states. Their behaviour is very interesting at the interface. We have refine the terminology for these states to up--date it to the new results and have call them {\it Frontier induced semi--infinite medium} (FISIM) states. They might well appear also in quantum wells and superlattices and have influence in the transport properties of these systems.

Abstract:The dichotomy between fermions and bosons is at the root of many physical phenomena, from metallic conduction of electricity to super-fluidity, and from the periodic table to coherent propagation of light. The dichotomy originates from the symmetry of the quantum mechanical wave function to the interchange of two identical particles. In systems that are confined to two spatial dimensions particles that are neither fermions nor bosons, coined "anyons", may exist. The fractional quantum Hall effect offers an experimental system where this possibility is realized. In this paper we present the concept of anyons, we explain why the observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect almost forces the notion of anyons upon us, and we review several possible ways for a direct observation of the physics of anyons. Furthermore, we devote a large part of the paper to non-abelian anyons, motivating their existence from the point of view of trial wave functions, giving a simple exposition of their relation to conformal field theories, and reviewing several proposals for their direct observation.

Abstract:Within a group-theoretical approach to the description of (2+1)-dimensional anyons, the minimal covariant set of linear differential equations is constructed for the fractional spin fields with the help of the deformed Heisenberg algebra (DHA), $[a^{-},a^{+}]=1+\nu K$, involving the Klein operator $K$, $\{K,a^{\pm}\}=0$, $K^{2}=1$. The connection of the minimal set of equations with the earlier proposed `universal' vector set of anyon equations is established. On the basis of this algebra, a bosonization of supersymmetric quantum mechanics is carried out. The construction comprises the cases of exact and spontaneously broken $N=2$ supersymmetry allowing us to realize a Bose-Fermi transformation and spin-1/2 representation of SU(2) group in terms of one bosonic oscillator. The construction admits an extension to the case of OSp(2$\vert$2) supersymmetry, and, as a consequence, both applications of the DHA turn out to be related. A possibility of `superimposing' the two applications of the DHA for constructing a supersymmetric (2+1)-dimensional anyon system is discussed. As a consequential result we point out that $osp(2|2)$ superalgebra is realizable as an operator algebra for a quantum mechanical 2-body (nonsupersymmetric) Calogero model.

On the origin of multi-component anyon wave functions

Abstract:In this paper I discuss how the component structure of anyon wave functions arises in theories with non-relativistic matter coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field on the torus. It is shown that there exists a singular gauge transformation which brings the Hamiltonian to free form. The gauge transformation removes a degree of freedom from the Hamiltonian. This degree of freedom generates only a finite dimensional Hilbert space and is responsible for the component structure of free anyon wave functions. This gives an understanding of the need for multiple component anyon wave functions from the point of view of Chern-Simons theory.

Abstract:We introduce a family of quantum spin Hamiltonians on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ that can be regarded as perturbations of Kitaev's abelian quantum double models that preserve the gauge and duality symmetries of these models. We analyze in detail the sector with one electric charge and one magnetic flux and show that the spectrum in this sector consists of both bound states and scattering states of abelian anyons. Concretely, we have defined a family of lattice models in which abelian anyons arise naturally as finite-size quasi-particles with non-trivial dynamics that consist of a charge-flux pair. In particular, the anyons exhibit a non-trivial holonomy with a quantized phase, consistent with the gauge and duality symmetries of the Hamiltonian.

Abstract:We analyze anyons and the fractional quantum Hall effect on the sphere by using the stereographic projective coordinate. We construct the hamiltonian, the angular momentum and obtain the ground states of anyons in some cases. The anyon gauge, the spin of the anyon and the spin-statistics relation are then discussed. We also construct the hierarchical wave function of spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall effect on the sphere and describe some relevant problems in the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:Coulomb interaction turns anyonic quasiparticles of a primary quantum Hall liquid with filling factor $\nu =1/(2m+1)$ into hard-core anyons. We have developed a model of coherent transport of such quasiparticles in systems of multiple antidots by extending the Wigner-Jordan description of 1D abelian anyons to tunneling problems. We show that the anyonic exchange statistics manifests itself in tunneling conductance even in the {\em absence} of quasiparticle exchanges. In particular, it can be seen as a non-vanishing resonant peak associated with quasiparticle tunneling through a line of three antidots.

Coherence Properties of the Repulsive Anyon-Hubbard Dimer

Abstract:One-dimensional anyonic models of the Hubbard type show intriguing ground-state properties, effectively transmuting between Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. The simplest model that one can investigate is an anyonic version of the bosonic Josephson junction, the repulsive anyon-Hubbard dimer. In the following we find an exact duality relation to the Bethe-solvable Bose-Hubbard dimer, which is well known from quantum optics and information theory and has interesting connections to spin squeezing and entangled coherent states. Conversely, we show that the anyonic Hubbard dimer has nontrivial coherence properties that emerge from the anyonic statistics. In particular, we find that coherences can be suppressed and amplified and show that these features are remarkably robust against additional repulsive on-site interactions highlighting the distinct nature of anyons.

Abelian Anyons on Flux-Quantized M5-Branes

Abstract:While fractional quantum Hall systems provide the best experimental evidence yet of (abelian) anyons plausibly necessary for future fault-tolerant quantum computation, like all strongly-coupled quantum systems their physics is not deeply understood. However, generally a promising approach is to (holographically) realize such systems on branes in string/M-theory; and specifically an old argument by Hellerman & Susskind gives a sketch of fractional quantum Hall states arising via discrete light cone quantization of M5/M9-brane intersections. Here we present a rigorous derivation of abelian anyon quantum states on M5$\perp$MO9-branes ("open M5-branes") on the discrete light cone, after globally completing the traditional local field content on the M5-worldvolume via a flux-quantization law compatible with the ambient 11d supergravity, specifically taken to be in the unstable co-Homotopy cohomology ("Hypothesis H"). The main step in the proof uses a theorem of Okuyama to identify co-Homotopy moduli spaces with configuration spaces of strings with charged endpoints, and identifies their loop spaces with cobordism of framed links that, under topological light cone quantization, turn out to be identified with the regularized Wilson loops of abelian Chern-Simons theory.

Abstract:Abstract Anyons are exotic low-dimensional quasiparticles whose unconventional quantum statistics extend the binary particle division into fermions and bosons. The fractional quantum Hall regime provides a natural host, with the first convincing anyon signatures recently observed through interferometry and cross-correlations of colliding beams. However, the fractional regime is rife with experimental complications, such as an anomalous tunneling density of states, which impede the manipulation of anyons. Here we show experimentally that the canonical integer quantum Hall regime can provide a robust anyon platform. Exploiting the Coulomb interaction between two copropagating quantum Hall channels, an electron injected into one channel splits into two fractional charges behaving as abelian anyons. Their unconventional statistics is revealed by negative cross-correlations between dilute quasiparticle beams. Similarly to fractional quantum Hall observations, we show that the negative signal stems from a time-domain braiding process, here involving the incident fractional quasiparticles and spontaneously generated electron-hole pairs. Beyond the dilute limit, a theoretical understanding is achieved via the edge magnetoplasmon description of interacting integer quantum Hall channels. Our findings establish that, counter-intuitively, the integer quantum Hall regime provides a platform of choice for exploring and manipulating quasiparticles with fractional quantum statistics.

Manipulating Non-Abelian Anyons in a Chiral Multichannel Kondo Model

Abstract:Non-Abelian anyons are fractional excitations of gapped topological models believed to describe certain topological superconductors or quantum Hall states. Here, we provide the first numerical evidence that they emerge as independent entities also in gapless electronic models. Starting from a multi-impurity multichannel chiral Kondo model, we introduce a novel mapping to a single-impurity model, amenable to Wilson's numerical renormalization group. We extract its spectral degeneracy structure and fractional entropy, and calculate the $F$ matrices, which encode the topological information regarding braiding of anyons, directly from impurity spin-spin correlations. Impressive recent advances on realizing multichannel Kondo systems with chiral edges may thus bring anyons into reality sooner than expected.

Abstract:One of the hallmarks of quantum statistics, tightly entwined with the concept of topological phases of matter, is the prediction of anyons. Although anyons are predicted to be realized in certain fractional quantum Hall systems, they have not yet been unambiguously detected in experiment. Here we introduce a simple quantum impurity model, where bosonic or fermionic impurities turn into anyons as a consequence of their interaction with the surrounding many-particle bath. A cloud of phonons dresses each impurity in such a way that it effectively attaches fluxes/vortices to it and thereby converts it into an Abelian anyon. The corresponding quantum impurity model, first, provides a new approach to the numerical solution of the many-anyon problem, along with a new concrete perspective of anyons as emergent quasiparticles built from composite bosons or fermions. More importantly, the model paves the way towards realizing anyons using impurities in crystal lattices as well as ultracold gases. In particular, we consider two heavy electrons interacting with a two-dimensional lattice crystal in a magnetic field, and show that when the impurity-bath system is rotated at the cyclotron frequency, impurities behave as anyons as a consequence of the angular momentum exchange between the impurities and the bath. A possible experimental realization is proposed by identifying the statistics parameter in terms of the mean square distance of the impurities and the magnetization of the impurity-bath system, both of which are accessible to experiment. Another proposed application are impurities immersed in a two-dimensional weakly interacting Bose gas.

Abstract:Emergent anyons are the key elements of the topological quantum computation and topological quantum memory. We study a two-component fermion model with conventional two-body interaction in a fine-tuned external field and show that several subsets in the low-lying excitations obey the same fusion rules as those of the toric code model. Those string-like (or domain wall) excitations whose energy congregates in a small spatial region (a wall) may be thought of as quasiparticles which, in a given subset, obey mutual semionic statistics. We show how to peel off one of such subsets from other degenerate subsets and manipulate anyons in cold dipolar Fermi atoms or cold dipolar fermionic heteronuclear molecules in optical lattices by means of the established techniques.

Abstract:We explore the decoherence of the gapless/critical boundary of a topological order, through interactions with the bulk reservoir of "ancilla anyons." We take the critical boundary of the $2d$ toric code as an example. The intrinsic nonlocal nature of the anyons demands the strong and weak symmetry condition for the ordinary decoherence problem be extended to the strong or weak gauge invariance conditions. We demonstrate that in the $\textit{doubled}$ Hilbert space, the partition function of the boundary is mapped to two layers of the $2d$ critical Ising model with an inter-layer line defect that depends on the species of the anyons causing the decoherence. The line defects associated with the tunneling of bosonic $e$ and $m$ anyons are relevant, and result in long-range correlations for either the $e$ or $m$ anyon respectively on the boundary in the doubled Hilbert space. In contrast, the defect of the $f$ anyon is marginal and leads to a line of fixed points with varying effective central charges, and power-law correlations having continuously varying scaling dimensions. We also demonstrate that decoherence-analogues of Majorana zero modes are localized at the spatial interface of the relevant $e$ and $m$ anyon decoherence channels, which leads to a universal logarithmic scaling of the Rényi entropy of the boundary.
