Abstract:We prove a new inequality for Gaussian processes, this inequality implies the Gordon-Chevet inequality. Some remarks on Gaussian proofs of Dvoretzky's theorem are given.

Abstract:In this paper we establish some results on the increments of a d-dimensional Gaussian process with the usual Euclidean norm. In particular we obtain the law of iterated logarithm and the Book-Shore type theorem for the increments of a d-dimensional Gaussian process, via estimating upper bounds and lower bounds of large deviation probabilities on the suprema of the d-dimensional Gaussian process.

Abstract:In this paper, we first obtain a Bernstein type of concentration inequality for stochastic integrals of multivariate point processes under some conditions through the Doléans-Dade exponential formula, and then derive a uniform exponential inequality using a generic chaining argument. As a direct consequence, we obtain an upper bound for a sequence of discrete time martingales indexed by a class of functionals. Finally, we apply the uniform exponential bound to nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators and provide a rate of convergence in terms of Hellinger distance, which is an improvement of earlier work of van de Geer (1995).

Csorgo et a1.(1994) studied moduli of continuity of Y(.) when it is an l(infinity)-valued process under the condition that sigma(*2)(h)/h(alpha) is quasi-increasing for some alpha > 0. In this paper we establish the large increment result for the l(infinity)-valued process Y(.).

Abstract:A celebrated result by Gordon allows one to compare the min-max behavior of two Gaussian processes if certain inequality conditions are met. The consequences of this result include the Gaussian min-max (GMT) and convex Gaussian min-max (CGMT) theorems which have had far-reaching implications in high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, non-smooth optimization, and signal processing. Both theorems rely on a pair of Gaussian processes, first identified by Slepian, that satisfy Gordon's comparison inequalities. In this paper, we identify such a new pair. The resulting theorems extend the classical GMT and CGMT Theorems from the case where the underlying Gaussian matrix in the primary process has iid rows to where it has independent but non-identically-distributed ones. The new CGMT is applied to the problems of multi-source Gaussian regression, as well as to binary classification of general Gaussian mixture models.

Abstract:We prove a Chevet type inequality which gives an upper bound for the norm of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix in terms of expectation of the supremum of "symmetric exponential" processes compared to the Gaussian ones in the Chevet inequality. This is used to give sharp upper estimate for a quantity $\Gamma_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the Euclidean operator norm of the sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix. We apply these estimates to give a sharp bound for the Restricted Isometry Constant of a random matrix with independent log-concave unconditional rows. We show also that our Chevet type inequality does not extend to general isotropic log-concave random matrices.

A Markovian Gauß\, Inequality for Asymmetric Deviations from the Mode of Symmetric Unimodal Distributions

Abstract:For a random variable with a unimodal distribution and finite second moment Gauß\, (1823) proved a sharp bound on the probability of the random variable to be outside a symmetric interval around its mode. An alternative proof for it is given based on Khintchine's representation of unimodal random variables. Analogously, a sharp inequality is proved for the slightly broader class of unimodal distributions with finite first absolute moment, which might be called a Markovian Gauß inequality. For symmetric unimodal distributions with finite second moment Semenikhin (2019) generalized Gauß's inequality to arbitrary intervals. For the class of symmetric unimodal distributions with finite first absolute moment we construct a Markovian version of it. Related inequalities of Volkov (1969) and Sellke and Sellke (1997) will be discussed as well.

On the Gaussian product inequality conjecture for disjoint principal minors of Wishart random matrices

Abstract:This paper extends various results related to the Gaussian product inequality (GPI) conjecture to the setting of disjoint principal minors of Wishart random matrices. This includes product-type inequalities for matrix-variate analogs of completely monotone functions and Bernstein functions of Wishart disjoint principal minors, respectively. In particular, the product-type inequalities apply to inverse determinant powers. Quantitative versions of the inequalities are also obtained when there is a mix of positive and negative exponents. Furthermore, an extended form of the GPI is shown to hold for the eigenvalues of Wishart random matrices by virtue of their law being multivariate totally positive of order 2 (MTP${}_2$). A new, unexplored avenue of research is presented to study the GPI from the point of view of elliptical distributions.

Abstract:In this short note, we find an equivalent combinatorial condition only involving finite sums under which a centered Gaussian random vector with multinomial covariance matrix satisfies the Gaussian product inequality (GPI) conjecture. These covariance matrices are relevant since their off-diagonal elements are negative, which is the hardest case to cover for the GPI conjecture, as mentioned by [Russell, O., \& Sun, W. 2022. Abstract:Abstract We prove a quantitative version of the Gaussian Faber–Krahn type inequality proved in (Betta et al. in Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 58:37–52, 2007) for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck operator, estimating the deficit in terms of the Gaussian Fraenkel asymmetry. As expected, the multiplicative constant only depends on the prescribed Gaussian measure.

Abstract:We consider covariance parameter estimation for a Gaussian process under inequality constraints (boundedness, monotonicity or convexity) in fixed-domain asymptotics. We address the estimation of the variance parameter and the estimation of the microergodic parameter of the Matérn and Wendland covariance functions. First, we show that the (unconstrained) maximum likelihood estimator has the same asymptotic distribution, unconditionally and conditionally to the fact that the Gaussian process satisfies the inequality constraints. Then, we study the recently suggested constrained maximum likelihood estimator. We show that it has the same asymptotic distribution as the (unconstrained) maximum likelihood estimator. In addition, we show in simulations that the constrained maximum likelihood estimator is generally more accurate on finite samples. Finally, we provide extensions to prediction and to noisy observations.

On the Cheeger inequality in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces

Abstract:We generalize the Cheeger inequality, a lower bound on the first nontrivial eigenvalue of a Laplacian, to the case of geometric sub-Laplacians on rank-varying Carnot-Carathéodory spaces and we describe a concrete method to lower bound the Cheeger constant. The proof is geometric, and works for Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed boundary conditions. One of the main technical tools in the proof is a generalization of Courant's nodal domain theorem, which is proven from scratch for Neumann and mixed boundary conditions. Carnot groups and the Baouendi-Grushin cylinder are treated as examples.
