Abstract:Sodium super ionic conductor (NASICON)-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) with the advantages of the high ionic conductivity, stability and safety is one of the most famous solid-state electrolytes. NZSP, however, requires the high sintering temperature about 1200 °C and long sintering time in the conventional solid-state reaction (SSR) method. In this study, the liquid-phase sintering (LPS) method was applied to synthesize NZSP with the use of NaPO3 glass with a low glass transition temperature of 292 °C. The formation of NZSP was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analyses in the samples obtained by the LPS method for the mixture of Na2ZrSi2O7, ZrO2, and NaPO3 glass. The sample sintered at 1000 °C for 10 h exhibited a higher Na+ ion conductivity of 1.81 mS/cm at 100 °C and a lower activation energy of 0.18 eV compared with the samples prepared by the SSR method. It is proposed that a new LPE method is effective for the synthesis of NZSP and the NaPO3 glass has a great contribution to the Na+ diffusion at the grain boundaries.

Low Temperature and Rapid Microwave Sintering of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 Solid Electrolytes for Na-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this work, the synthesis of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) solid electrolytes is demonstrated through a low temperature and rapid microwave sintering process and its application in Na-ion batteries is investigated. The quickly and uniformly heating of microwave sintering can inhibit the excessive grain growth significantly, resulting in the fine grained NZSP electrolyte with high relative density of 96%. The obtained NZSP electrolyte sintered by microwave heating at 850 degrees C for 30 min shows high room temperature ionic conductivity of 2.511 x 10(-4) S cm(-1), which is comparable to that of sample synthesized by solid-state sintering method at 1200 degrees C for 720 min. The application of the resultant NZSP electrolyte in Na-ions batteries is evaluated by assembling Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C vertical bar NZSP vertical bar Na solid sodium battery. Discharge specific capacity of 75.7 mAh g(-1) with a capacity retention rate of 81.97% is recorded after 100 cycles at 0.5C. This work reports the microwave sintering synthesis of NZSP solid electrolyte with fascinating advantages of energy-saving and time-saving, driving the application of inorganic solid electrolyte in solid batteries.
Ce-Substituted Nanograin Na3Zr2Si2PO12 Prepared by LF-FSP as Sodium-Ion Conductors

Abstract:The urgent need for high-performance solid electrolytes has aroused considerable focus on NASICON ceramics. Optimization of processing routes to dense, defect-free materials has yet to receive sufficient attention to date. Although traditional solid-state reaction methods followed by repetitive ball milling and sintering up to 10 h above 1200 °C are common place, the resulting average particle sizes are usually too large to produce dense, robust structures because of excessive grain growth. In this study, nanopowders (NPs) are produced, which offer a superior opportunity to make dense, high-phase-purity sintered bodies. Here, we report on the effect of sintering conditions on the microstructures and phase of Ce4+-substituted NASICON samples, Na3CexZr2-xSi2PO12 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3). NPs permit processing fine-grained solid-state electrolytes with 98% relative density at 1100 °C/5 h. In addition, Rietveld refinement was applied to evaluate 3-D Na-ion diffusion channels among different NASICON samples. Also, it is found that adding 5 at % Ce4+ does not change the phase structure but dramatically enlarges the Na+ diffusion "bottleneck" from 5.4 to 5.6 Å2. This may be one reason for these samples to exhibit conductivities of 2.4 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 140 °C.

Abstract:NASICON-type material Na 1+ x Zr 2 Si x P 3− x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) is considered to be one of the most promising solid-state electrolytes that can be applied in all-solid-state sodium batteries (SSNBs). However, further increasing the ionic conductivity of Na 1+ x Zr 2 Si x P 3− x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) to obtain higher performance electrolyte materials is still a challenge for its practical application. Herein, the Na 3.4 Zr 2 Si 2.4 P 0.6 O 12 (NZSP) powder is prepared by the solution-assisted solid-state reaction (SA-SSR), and solid-state electrolytes with excellent electrochemical properties are obtained by doping with NaF as a sintering aid. With the increase of NaF doping, the crystal structure of NZSP is changed as well as a slight excess of Na + may increase the bottleneck size of the crystal, so that it enhances the migration ability of Na + in the crystal. Also, NaF as a sintering aid lowers the sintering temperature, increases the densities and improves the effective contact between crystals, which reduces the grain boundary impedance of NZSP. However, the excessive NaF dopant leads to the generation of microcracks decreasing the Na + conducting and mechanical properties of solid-state electrolytes. Using this simple and low-cost strategy of NaF doping, NZSP-0.3NaF achieves an excellent conductivity of 4.98 mS cm −1 with unexpectedly low activation energy of 0.227 eV. Therefore, this composition is one of the few electrolytes with high conductivity reported so far and is a competitive option for solid-state sodium batteries.

Abstract:NASICON-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) is supposed to be one of the greatest feasible solid electrolytes due to its high electrochemical performance and safety. Herein, Na2B4O7 (NBO) additive is proposed to enhance the grain connection and ionic conductivities, and reduce the sintering temperature. The grain boundary microstructure of Na3.3La0.3Zr1.7Si2PO12 (NLZSP) is adjusted via introducing NBO additive to facilitate the densification sintering at 950 °C. NLZSP with 3 wt% NBO (NZSP(NBO3)) demonstrates an optimized total ionic conductivity (σ t) of 1.81 mS cm−1 at 25 °C and low activation energy (E a) of 0.22 eV. EIS and SEM analysis reveals that NBO additive promotes more intimate contact between NLZSP grains and extensively reduces the grain-boundary resistance (R gb) from 135 Ω cm2 for NLZSP to 8 Ω cm2 for NLZSP(NBO3). Besides, wide electrochemical stability window of 5 V vs Na+/Na and galvanostatic sodium stripping-plating up to 400 h reconfirms the super stability of NLZSP(NBO3)/Na interface, while small contact angle of 82° will bring better wettability and interface contact of NLZSP(NBO3)/Na. Solid-state sodium metal batteries (SMBs) based reduced graphene oxide wrapped NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP@rGO) 3D conductive cathode and NLZSP(NBO3) ceramic electrolyte shown excellent rate performance and cycle stability (91.4% of capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1C). Hence, NLZSP(NBO) ceramic electrolyte exhibits a significant advantage in enhancing grain connection, regulating ionic conductivity and reducing sintering temperature, and is anticipated to be used in all solid-state sodium ions batteries (ASSSIBs).

Abstract:Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is a promising electrolyte material for all-solid-state battery due to its high ionic conductivity and good air stability with metallic lithium. In this article, Li7La3Zr2O12 electrolytes with excess lithium 4wt%, 6wt%, 8wt%, 10wt% were prepared by traditional two steps solid-phase sintering method. The influence of concentration of lithium and calcination temperature on the structure of Li7La3Zr2O12 were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in detail. To improve the density of the sample, the granulation was applied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed the granulation of Li7La3Zr2O12 power before pressing can significantly accelerate densification during the final high temperature, long duration sintering process.
Composite NASICON (Na3Zr2Si2PO12) Solid-State Electrolyte with Enhanced Na+ Ionic Conductivity: Effect of Liquid Phase Sintering

Abstract:NASICON-type of solid-state electrolyte, Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP), is one of the potential solid-state electrolytes for all-solid-state Na battery and Na-air battery. However, in solid-state synthesis, high sintering temperature above 1200 °C and long duration are required, which led to loss of volatile materials and formation of impurities at the grain boundaries. This hampers the total ionic conductivity of NZSP to be in the range of 10-4 S cm-1. Herein, we have reduced both the sintering temperature and time of the NZSP electrolyte by sintering the NZSP powders with different amounts of Na2SiO3 additive, which provides the liquid phase for the sintering process. The addition of 5 wt % Na2SiO3 has shown the highest total ionic conductivity of 1.45 mS cm-1 at room temperature. A systematic study of the effect of Na2SiO3 on the microstructure and electrical properties of the NZSP electrolyte is conducted by the structural study with the help of morphological and chemical observations using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and using focused ion-beam-time of flight-secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The XRD results revealed that cations from Na2SiO3 diffused into the bulk change the stoichiometry of NZSP, leading to an enlarged bottleneck area and hence lowering activation energy in the bulk, which contributes to the increment of the bulk ion conductivity, as indicated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy result. In addition, higher density and better microstructure contribute to improved grain boundary conductivity. More importantly, this study has achieved a highly ionic conductive NZSP only by facile addition of Na2SiO3 into the NZSP powder prior to the sintering stage.

Abstract:NASICON structural Na3Zr2Si2PO12 is considered as a promising solid electrolyte for all-solid-state sodium ionic batteries owing to the high ionic conductivity at room temperature, good moisture, thermal and chemical stability, and wide electrochemical window. However, there are still no reliable and scalable synthesis method for such multi-element complicated structural oxides. In this work, NZSP electrolyte particles are successfully synthesized by swirling spray flame synthesis and the solid electrolyte pellets are made by solving the problems of multiple elements sintering and densification. The SSA of the as-synthesized raw NZSP nanopowders with reduced amount of EHA is the largest with size of about 10 nm for the gas-to-particle route and suitable pathway in flame. The raw nanoparticles are of core-shell structure with ZrO2 cores and amorphous shells of other elements due to the distinctive temperatures for gas-to-solid transformation of different elements. The disk-shape pellets compassed by non-NASICON-structure NZSP raw nanopowders become NASICON structure after reactive sintering and two-step sintering. The NZSP solid electrolyte pellet with stoichiometric P content sintered at 1250/1100 degrees C for 12 h by two-step sintering method exhibits the highest ionic conductivity of 0.65 mS/cm at room temperature (25 degrees C) with activation energy of 0.370 eV and highest relative density of 98.6 %. The excellent conductivity and the high-yield production capability of the swirling spray flame synthesis make it a promising synthesizing method for wider application of NASICON structural NZSP solid electrolytes.

Abstract:The smart manufacturing of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) plays an important role in the assembling, improvement and cost-reduction of high energy density solid-state batteries (SSBs). In this work, an ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS) method is employed to prepare the NASICON Na3Zr2Si2PO12 ceramic SSEs in seconds. The prepared Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (US-NZSPO) exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 2.62 × 10−4 S cm−1 and low activation energy of 0.28 eV. The Na | US-NZSPO | Na symmetric cell delivers a cycling time over 270 h with a steady voltage overpotential at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2. Moreover, a Coulombic efficiency of 99.9 % and a capacity retention of 89 % are achieved at 0.2 C in Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) | US-NZSPO | Na solid cells after 800 cycles with the areal NVP loading of 4.5 mg cm−2. These favorable electrochemical performances originate from the robust US-NZSPO pellet and well-constructed SSE-electrode interface, in which the electrochemically active interface demonstrates a strong self-stabilizing function to maintain the tight interfacial connections and the continuous Na+ ion transport.

Abstract:For conventional preparation methods of Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid state electrolytes, there is a stereotype that higher density always comes from higher pressure enforced upon the LLZO pellets. In this paper, a different way with an auto-consolidation mechanism is provided and discussed. No pressing operations are employed during the whole preparation process. Due to the surface tension of liquid melted Li2O at sintering temperature, LLZO particles could aggregate together freely and automatically. The preparation process for dense LLZO is greatly simplified. A dense tetragonal LLZO with high relative density about 93% has been prepared successfully by this auto-consolidation method. And there are no voids observed in the SEM images. At 30 °C, the total conductivity is about 5.67 × 10−5 S cm−1, which is the highest one for tetragonal LLZO in the reported issues, even two times higher than that prepared by hot-pressing method. The activation energy for total conductivity is ∼0.35 eV atom−1 at 30–120 °C, slightly lower than the previous reported values. This work sheds light on the understanding of the consolidation mechanism for solid electrolytes and suggests a reliable route to syhthesize cemanic solid electrolytes.

Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have attracted considerable attention as an alternative for liquid electrolytes to improve safety and durability. Sodium Super Ionic CONductor (NASICON)-type SSEs, typically Na3Zr2Si2PO12, have shown great promise because of their high ionic conductivity and low thermal expansivity. Doping La into the NASICON structure can further elevate the ionic conductivity by an order of magnitude to several mS/cm. However, the underlying mechanism of ionic transportation enhancement has not yet been fully disclosed. Herein, we fabricate a series of Na3+xLaxZr2–xSi2PO12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) SSEs. The electronic and local structures of constituent elements are studied via synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and the ionic dynamics and Na-ion conduction mechanism are investigated by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results prove that La3+ ions exist in the form of phosphate impurities such as Na3La(PO4)2 instead of occupying the Zr4+ site. As a result, the increased Si/P ratio in the NASICON phase, accompanied by an increase in the sodium ion occupancy, makes a major contribution to the enhancement of ionic conductivity. The spin–lattice relaxation time study confirms the accelerated Na+ motions in the altered NASICON phase. Formation of sodium ion conductive NaZr2(PO4)3 composite via liquid phase sintering method with sodium disilicate glass

Abstract:NaZr2(PO4)3 (NZP) is one of the sodium superionic conductor (NASICON) groups with low thermal expansion. However, it was reported that has a very low ionic conductivity at room temperature. In this study, we tried to sinter the NZP with Na2Si2O5 glass to enhance the content of sodium ions and decrease the grain boundary resistance by the liquid-phase sintering method. The optimized ionic conductivity measured at room temperature was 8.9 × 10−6 S cm−1 with a highly dense cross-section. And the activation energy was also decreased to 0.42 eV, which is 84% of the pure NZP. Besides, both the bulk and grain boundary resistance decreased after adding the Na2Si2O5 glass. Herein, the synthesis of the solid electrolyte ceramics with selected glass materials via the liquid-phase sintering method can be considered to be an optimizable sinter method for improving the conductivity of the solid oxide electrolyte.

Abstract:A NASICON-type electrolyte was considered to be one of the most promising electrolytes for solid-state Na metal batteries. However, its lower ion conductivity compared to a liquid electrolyte and the formation of Na dendrites hinder its practical application. Herein, NASICON-type (Na3Zr2Si2PO12) solid-state electrolytes with developed ionic conductivity and declined electronic conductivity were synthesized through the rare earth oxide-assisted sintering method, such as Sm2O3 and Ho2O3. With the presence of Sm2O3 and Ho2O3 during sintering, the formed phosphate grain boundary phase adjusts the Si/P ratio in the NASICON structure with higher Na+ occupancy and then enhances the ionic conductivity of electrolytes. On the other hand, the formed phosphate grain boundary phase with low electronic conductivity prevents the movement of electrons at the grain boundary, reducing the probability that electrons combine with Na+ at the grain boundary to form Na-0, thereby restricting the formation of dendrites along grain boundaries. In addition, the added Sm2O3 and Ho2O3 play the role of fluxing agents to increase the densification of ceramics, further enabling the enhancement of ionic conductivity and restriction of dendrites in the voids. As a result, the obtained NZSP-0.2Sm and NZSP-0.3Ho electrolytes deliver critical current density (CCD) values of 0.85 and 0.65 mA cm(-2), respectively, at room temperature. Application of the obtained electrolytes in Na metal batteries is evaluated by assembling Na3V2(PO4)(3)vertical bar NZSP-0.2Sm/0.3Ho vertical bar Na cells, which deliver high discharge capacity values of 102.6 and 101.8 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C after 100 cycles with capacity retention ratios of 98.3 and 98.6%, respectively. The presented results indicated that rare earth oxideassisted sintering is an effective route to improve the ionic conductivity and restrict dendrite formation for oxide ceramic solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract:Na3Zr2(SiO4)2(PO4), a typical solid-state electrolyte material, was fabricated at 700°C within seconds by flash-sintering. Under a direct-current electric field, the sodium oxides deposited on the cathode side due to the electrochemical reactions and thereby resulting in impurities (Na2ZrSi2O7 and m-ZrO2) within the bulks. The pure Na3Zr2(SiO4)2(PO4) bulks without the impurities could be sintered under alternative- current electric field, which exhibited comparable ion conductivity and activation energy to the reported data. This study demonstrated that flash-sintering can be used to synthesize and densify ceramics containing volatile composites. It may provide a new route to fabricate solid-state electrolytes in an efficient way.

Na3Zr2Si2PO12 solid-state electrolyte with glass-like morphology for enhanced dendrite suppression

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries based on solid-state electrolytes are of great interest and importance for the next-generation energy storage due to their high energy output and improved safety. For building the solid-state batteries, Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) represents a promising candidate as it features high chemical stability against air exposure and a high Na+ conductivity. NZSP pellets were usually calcined at a high temperature, and the high volatility of Na and P elements easily led to the formation of impurity phase. In this work, the effects of calcination temperature and stoichiometry on the phase purity and ionic conductivity of the NZSP electrolyte were studied. At an elevated sintering temperature, the NZSP electrolyte showed a high ionic conductivity owing to decreased porosity, and the highest ionic conductivity at 30 °C was observed to be 2.75 × 10–5 S·cm−1 with an activation energy of 0.41 eV. For the stoichiometry, the introduction of 5 mol% excessive P results in formation of more Na3PO4 and glass-like phase at the grain boundary, which caused the blurred grain boundary and reduced grain barrier, and effectively suppressed Na dendrite growth, then accounted for improved cycling performance of a Na||Na symmetric cell. Our work provided insights on reasonable design and preparation of NZSP electrolyte towards practical realization of solid-state Na-metal batteries.Graphical abstract摘要基于固态电解质的可充电电池表现出高的能量密度和高安全性, 具有重要的研究意义。其中, Na3Zr2Si2PO12(NZSP)具有高离子电导率以及高的空气稳定性, 是一类很有前景的固态电解质。NZSP通常需要高温焙烧, 但是高的焙烧温度易导致Na, P等元素的挥发, 从而导致杂相的形成。在本工作中, 我们研究了焙烧温度以及化学计量比对NZSP相结构以及离子电导率的影响。随着焙烧温度升高, NZSP电解质孔隙率降低, 电导率升高, 30 °C时最高的离子电导率为2.75 × 10–5 S·cm−1, 活化能0.41 eV。同时, 当引入5 mol%过量的P时, 产生更多的Na3PO4, 并在晶界处形成玻璃态, 从而有效抑制钠枝晶, 提高Na||Na对称电池的循环稳定性。我们的工作为NZSP电解质的设计与制备提供了新见解。

Abstract:A new approach was developed to prepare NaZr2(PO4)3 (NZP) powders at low temperature of 330?C. The effect of different molar ratios of ZrO(NO3)2 ? xH2O to NaH2PO4 ? 2H2O on the synthesis of NZP powders was systematically investigated by XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDS and Raman spectroscopy. The mineralizer NaNO3 was formed in situ due to the mechanochemical reaction between raw materials ZrO(NO3)2 ? xH2O and NaH2PO4 ? 2H2O during the grinding process. When the optimal molar ratio of Zr:P = 2:6 was used, the NZP powders with high crystallinity, good dispersity and particle sizes in the range of 500-700 nm were obtained. The dense NZP ceramics was obtained by sintering at 1100 ?C for 3 h with 2 wt.% ZnO as the sintering aid. The relative density and Vickers hardness of the sintered ceramics reached 93.4% and 704MPa, respectively.

Si3N4-Assisted Densification Sintering of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 Ceramic Electrolyte toward Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The solid-state metal battery with solid-state electrolytes has been considered the next generation of energy storage technology owing to its superior safety and high energy density. But, unfavorable ionic conductivity and interfacial problems make it difficult to widely use in practice. In this work, Si3N4 was rationally introduced into the NASICON matrix as a sintering aid, and the influence of Si3N4 on the crystal phase, microstructure, electrochemical and electrical performance of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) ceramic was systematically studied. The results demonstrate that the introduction of Si3N4 can effectively lower the densification sintering temperature of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 electrolyte and enhance the room temperature ionic conductivity of the NZSP to 3.82 × 10−4 S cm−1. In addition, since Si3N4 has a high thermal conductivity and can inhibit the transmission of electrons between the grains of the electrolyte matrix, it will effectively hinder the generation of sodium metal dendrites and relieve the concentration of the heat source. Moreover, owing to the desirable interface compatibility of the Na and NZSP-Si3N4 electrolyte, the Na/NZSP-1150-1%Si3N4/Na symmetric battery exhibits excellent stability, and the electrode/electrolyte interface still maintains good integrity even after long-term cycling. The assembled Na/NZSP-1150-1%Si3N4/Na3.5V0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5Ti0.5(PO4)3 cell manifests an initial specific capacity of 152.5 mA h g−1, together with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 99.8%. Furthermore, after 200 cycles, the battery displays a capacity retention rate of 82%.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, the effect of varying the size of the precursor raw materials SiO 2 and ZrO 2 in the solid-state synthesis of NASICON in the form Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 was studied. Nanoscale and macro-scale precursor materials were selected for comparison purposes, and a range of sintering times were examined (10, 24 and 40 h) at a temperature of 1230 °C. Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 pellets produced from nanopowder precursors were found to produce substantially higher ionic conductivities, with improved morphology and higher density than those produced from larger micron-scaled precursors. The nanoparticle precursors were shown to give a maximum ionic conductivity of 1.16 × 10 −3 S cm −1 when sintered at 1230 °C for 40 h, in the higher range of published solid-state Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 conductivities. The macro-precursors gave lower ionic conductivity of 0.62 × 10 −3 S cm −1 under the same processing conditions. Most current authors do not quote or consider the precursor particle size for solid-state synthesis of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 . This study shows the importance of precursor powder particle size in the microstructure and performance of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 during solid-state synthesis and offers a route to improved predictability and consistency of the manufacturing process.

Abstract:Abstract33Na2O-40ZrO2-40SiO2-10P2O5 solid electrolytes were successfully prepared by the solid-phase reaction. The effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the crystal phase, microstructure, and electrical properties of the solid electrolytes were investigated by TG-DTG, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the main crystal phases of all the obtained solid electrolytes are Na3Zr2Si2PO12 of NASICON-type monoclinic structure, accompanied by a small amount of ZrO2 secondary phase. The sintering temperature and time have a significant effect on the microstructure of the materials but have little effect on the crystalline phases. The fine grain morphology and stable structure are beneficial to reduce the hindrance of ion conduction. These solid electrolytes sintered at 1200 °C for 15 h shows the highest room temperature ionic conductivity of 7.82 × 10–4 S·cm−1. At the same time, the good air stability of the solid electrolyte indicates that it has certain application prospects in the fields of gas sensors, portable electronic equipment, and so on.
