Abstract:Recycling of spent Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is an emerging global concern. Current recycling technologies generally include the extraction/separation of Li and transition metals and subsequent regeneration of materials. Herein, these processes are integrated into a spray pyrolysis technology-based closed-loop. As an exemplary study, spent LiCoO2 is first converted into chlorides through a chlorination process, and then turns into Co3O4 and LiCl during the following spray pyrolysis process. Thus, Co and Li can be separated easily by water-leaching. More than 95% of Li is selectively leached out by water-leaching, and less than 1.0% Co is dissolved. Gaseous HCl produced in the pyrolysis process could be recycled in the chlorination of spent LiCoO2. Moreover, the nanosized Co3O4 residue could be directly used as precursor for synthesizing high performance single-crystal LiCoO2, which demonstrates better cycling performance than commercial LiCoO2. This closed-loop holds great economic benefits as it integrates the selective Li recovery and synthesis of high-quality precursor into one process, demonstrating great potential for industrial-scale spent LIBs recycling.
