Abstract:In this study, we apply superposed epoch analysis to the 1.5–6.0 MeV electron flux dropout events observed on Solar, Anomalous, Magnetospheric Particle Explorer satellite for 110 magnetic storms related to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) associated with interplanetary shocks during 1998–2003, which can help to study one of the scientific objectives of the recently launched Van Allen Probe—to determine and quantify the mechanisms of the losses in the outer radiation belt. Results obtained in this paper show that the impact of high solar wind dynamic pressure (Pdy) on the magnetosphere would lead to much larger electron flux dropout than low dynamic pressure. Furthermore, it is shown that southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) condition can result in more significant dropout compared with northward IMF condition. In addition, the largest local dropout is caused by high Pdy with northward IMF at L∼5.1. Dropouts under high Pdy and southward IMF conditions are the largest, whereas dropouts under low Pdy and northward IMF conditions are the smallest. Our study tackles the problem of quantifying the dropouts of electrons by calculating the radiation belt content index and finding the spatial distribution of dropout and the location of maximum dropout. Another finding is that Pdy and IMF affect the dropouts in CME‐driven storms. These new findings provide insight into which mechanisms play a more important role in different dropout events.

Abstract:On 23 November 2012, a sudden dropout of the relativistic electron flux was observed after an interplanetary shock arrival. The dropout peaks at approximate to 1 MeV and more than 80% of the electrons disappeared from the drift shell. Van Allen twin Probes observed a sharp electron flux dropout with clear energy dispersion signals. The repeating flux dropout and recovery signatures, or dropout echoes, constitute a new phenomenon referred to as a drifting electron dropout with a limited initial spatial range. The azimuthal range of the dropout is estimated to be on the duskside, from approximate to 1300 to 0100 LT. We conclude that the shock-induced electron dropout is not caused by the magnetopause shadowing. The dropout and consequent echoes suggest that the radial migration of relativistic electrons is induced by the strong dusk-dawn asymmetric interplanetary shock compression on the magnetosphere.
Relativistic electron flux dropouts in the outer radiation belt associated with corotating interaction regions

Abstract:Understanding how the relativistic electron fluxes drop out in the outer radiation belt under different conditions is of great importance. To investigate which mechanisms may affect the dropouts under different solar wind conditions, 1.5-6.0MeV electron flux dropout events associated with 223 corotating interaction regions (CIRs) from 1994 to 2003 are studied using the observations of Solar, Anomalous, Magnetospheric Particle Explorer satellite. According to the superposed epoch analysis, it is found that high solar wind dynamic pressure with the peak median value of about 7nPa is corresponding to the dropout of the median of the radiation belt content (RBC) index to 20% of the level before stream interface arrival, whereas low dynamic pressure with the peak median value of about 3nPa is related to the dropout of the median of RBC index to 40% of the level before stream interface arrival. Furthermore, the influences of Russell-McPherron effect with respect to interplanetary magnetic field orientation on dropouts are considered. It is pointed out that under positive Russell-McPherron effect (+RM effect) condition, the median of RBC index can drop to 23% of the level before stream interface arrival, while for negative Russell-McPherron effect (-RM effect) events, the median of RBC index only drops to 37% of the level before stream interface arrival. From the evolution of phase space density profiles, the effect of +RM on dropouts can be through nonadiabatic loss.
Electron Dropout Echoes Induced by Interplanetary Shock: A Statistical Study

Abstract:"Electron dropout echo" as indicated by repeated moderate dropout and recovery signatures of the flux of energetic electron in the outer radiation belt region has been investigated systematically. The electron moderate dropout and its echoes are usually found for higher-energy (>300 keV) channel fluxes, whereas the flux enhancements are obvious for lower energy electrons simultaneously after the interplanetary shock arrives at the Earth's geosynchronous orbit. The electron dropout echo events are found to be usually associated with the interplanetary shocks arrival. The 104 dropout echo events have been found from 215 interplanetary shock events from 1998 to 2007 based on the Los Alamos National Laboratory satellite data. In analogy to substorm injections, these 104 events could be naturally divided into two categories: dispersionless (49 events) or dispersive (55 events) according to the energy dispersion of the initial dropout. It is found that locations of dispersionless events are distributed mainly in the duskside magnetosphere. Further, the obtained locations derived from dispersive events with the time-of-flight technique of the initial dropout regions are mainly located at the duskside as well. Statistical studies have shown that the effect of shock normal, interplanetary magnetic field B-z and solar wind dynamic pressure may be insignificant to these electron dropout events. We suggest that the similar to 1 min electric field impulse induced by the interplanetary shock produces a more pronounced inward migration of electrons at the duskside, resulting in the observed duskside moderate dropout of electron flux and its consequent echoes.
Dynamic mechanisms associated with high‐energy electron flux dropout in the Earth's outer radiation belt under the influence of a coronal mass ejection sheath region

Abstract:The near‐Earth interplanetary environment conditions affect the dynamics of the relativistic electron population quasi‐trapped in the radiation belts. A complex chain of processes observed in the magnetosphere can contribute to the variability of these populations when interplanetary structures, such as the interplanetary counterpart of a solar coronal mass ejection (ICME), and high‐speed solar wind streams (HSS) interact with the magnetosphere. However, as these processes can coexist, it is hard to untangle the relative contribution of each process to the loss of particles and the eventual repopulation. Here we show evidence that it is possible to distinguish the relative contribution of mechanisms related to the loss of the outer radiation belt electrons for an event observed on July 19‐20, 2016. The interaction of an ICME's turbulent sheath with the Earth's magnetosphere resulted in a decrease in the outer radiation belt relativistic electron population. The ultra‐low frequency (ULF) and chorus wave activities are detected in the outer radiation belt during the time when the Earth's magnetosphere is under the influence of the ICME's sheath region, as well as the ICME's magnetic cloud region, while the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in the outer belt are observed only during the sheath region. Dynamic mechanisms such as magnetopause shadowing, outward radial diffusion driven by ULF waves, pitch‐angle scattering driven by both EMIC and chorus waves are quantitatively analyzed. Our results suggest that the structures of the ICMEs can trigger the drivers to generate the different dynamic mechanisms responsible for the radiation belt population variability. Abstract:How relativistic electrons are lost is an important question surrounding the complex dynamics of the Earth's outer radiation belt. Radial loss to the magnetopause and local loss to the atmosphere are two main competing paradigms. Here on the basis of the analysis of a radiation belt storm event on 27 February 2014, we present new evidence for the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave-driven local precipitation loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of the outer radiation belt. During the main phase of this storm, the radial profile of relativistic electron phase space density was quasi-monotonic, qualitatively inconsistent with the prediction of radial loss theory. The local loss at low L shells was required to prevent the development of phase space density peak resulting from the radial loss process at high L shells. The rapid loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of outer radiation belt was observed as a dip structure of the electron flux temporal profile closely related to intense EMIC waves. Our simulations further confirm that the observed EMIC waves within a quite limited longitudinal region were able to reduce the off-equatorially mirroring relativistic electron fluxes by up to 2 orders of magnitude within about 1.5 h.
Understanding Electron Dropout Echoes Induced by Interplanetary Shocks: Test Particle Simulations

Abstract:Recently, interplanetary shocks have been reported to cause “electron dropout echoes” in the outer radiation belt, which is manifested as repeated dropout and recovery signals in electron fluxes. Both previous case and statistical studies have shown that electron dropout echoes are mostly found for high‐energy (>300 keV) electrons, and the initial dropout region is mainly located at the dusk magnetosphere, regardless of shock parameters such as shock normal. To understand these properties, we model the electron dropout echoes at geosynchronous orbit by tracing electrons in the analytic field model of the shock‐induced propagating pulse. It is shown that the characteristics of shock‐induced electron dropout echo events including energy dependence and localization are well reproduced by our model. By analyzing the trajectories of typical electrons, we find that electrons are inward transported and accelerated through “drift‐resonance‐like” interactions with the magnetosonic pulse. Two causes of the dawn‐dusk asymmetric response are presented: (1) the difference between the interaction time of electrons with the magnetosonic pulse and (2) the opposite radial ∇ B drift of the electrons at dawnside and duskside. Further, we calculate the contributions to electron dynamics and phase space density variations from three terms: E × B drift, radial ∇ B drift, and gyrobetatron acceleration. The details of electron flux variations could vary with the form of the shock‐induced pulse and the initial electron distribution, thus be different from our results; however, the basic ingredients of the electron interaction with the pulse could provide a general frame for understanding and evaluating electron flux responses.

Variations of the relativistic electron flux after a magnetospheric compression event

Abstract:On January 21, 2015, a sharp increase of the solar wind dynamic pressure impacted the magnetosphere. The magnetopause moved inward to the region L < 8 without causing a geomagnetic storm. The flux of the relativistic electrons in the outer radiation belt decreased by half during this event based on the observations of the particle radiation monitor (PRM) of the fourth of the China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellites (CBERS-4). The flux remained low for approximately 11 d; it did not recover after a small magnetic storm on January 26 but after a small magnetic storm on February 2. The loss and recovery of the relativistic electrons during this event are investigated using the PRM data, medium- and high-energy electron observations of NOAA-15 and the Van Allen Probes, medium-energy electron observations of GOES-13, and wave observations of the Van Allen Probes. This study shows that the loss of energetic electrons in this event is related to magnetospheric compression. The chorus waves accelerate the medium-energy electrons, which causes the recovery of relativistic electrons. The Van Allen Probes detected strong chorus waves in the region L = 3–6 from January 21 to February 2. However, the flux of medium-energy electrons was low in the region. This implies that the long-lasting lack of recovery of the relativistic electrons after this event is due to the lack of the medium-energy “seed” electrons. The medium-energy electrons in the outer radiation belt may be a clue to predict the recovery of relativistic electrons.

Abstract:The radiation belt energetic electrons that are trapped by the geomagnetic field are one kind of space plasma and magnetic fluid. We quantitatively study the competition process between source and loss processes of radiation belt “source” (a few to tens of keV), “seed” (hundreds of keV), and “relativistic” (>1 MeV) electrons when a typical magnetic cloud (MC) event impinged on the magnetosphere on 19–20 July 2016. A very weak geomagnetic storm with SymHmin = −32 nT was driven by this magnetic cloud event. With the MC-driven shock arrival, the relativistic electrons experienced a “one-kick” energization at lower L-shells while having a moderate dropout at higher L-shells. The dropout became pronounced during the weak storm main phase. However, the seed electrons had a slight depletion after the shock and recovered to the pre-event level in the main phase, while the source electrons continued increasing during the entire event. Further analysis demonstrates that the loss processes (magnetopause shadowing and ultralow-frequency waves-driven outward transport) were competing with the source processes (shock-induced energization, substorm ejections, and wave–particle interactions), which are strongly sensitive to electron energy and L-shells. It is found that L*= ∼ 4 and μ = 102–102.5 MeV/G could be typical values at which the source and loss processes arrived at dynamic equilibrium. Our study first provides the “balance lines” in both energy channels and L* of the radiation belt source, seed, and relativistic electrons in response to magnetic cloud events. The quantitative results could be a key factor when investigating MC–magnetosphere coupling.

Responses of Relativistic Electron Fluxes in the Outer Radiation Belt to Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:Geomagnetic storms can either increase or decrease relativistic electron fluxes in the outer radiation belt. A statistical survey of 84 isolated storms demonstrates that geomagnetic storms preferentially decrease relativistic electron fluxes at higher energies, while flux enhancements are more common at lower energies. In about 87% of the storms, 0.3-2.5 MeV electron fluxes show an increase, whereas 2.5-14 MeV electron fluxes increase in only 35% of the storms. Superposed epoch analyses suggest that such "energy-dependent" responses of electrons preferably occur during conditions of high solar wind density which is favorable to generate magnetospheric electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves, and these events are associated with relatively weaker chorus activities. We have examined one of the cases where observed EMIC waves can resonate effectively with >2.5 MeV electrons and scatter them into the atmosphere. The correlation study further illustrates that electron flux dropouts during storm main phases do not correlate well with the flux buildup during storm recovery phases. We suggest that a combination of efficient EMIC-induced scattering and weaker chorus-driven acceleration provides a viable candidate for the energy-dependent responses of outer radiation belt relativistic electrons to geomagnetic storms. These results are of great interest to both understanding of the radiation belt dynamics and applications in space weather.
Nonstorm time dropout of radiation belt electron fluxes on 24 September 2013

Abstract:Radiation belt electron flux dropouts during the main phase of geomagnetic storms have received increasing attention in recent years. Here we focus on a rarely reported nonstorm time dropout event observed by Van Allen Probes on 24 September 2013. Within several hours, the radiation belt electron fluxes exhibited a significant (up to 2 orders of magnitude) depletion over a wide range of radial distances (L > 4.5), energies (approximate to 500keV to several MeV) and equatorial pitch angles (0 degrees(e)180 degrees). STEERB simulations show that the relativistic electron loss in the region L = 4.5-6.0 was primarily caused by the pitch angle scattering of observed plasmaspheric hiss and electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. Our results emphasize the complexity of radiation belt dynamics and the importance of wave-driven precipitation loss even during nonstorm times.

Abstract:Magnetopause shadowing (MPS) effect could drive a concurrent dropout of radiation belt electrons and ring current protons. However, its relative role in the dropout of both plasma populations has not been well quantified. In this work, we study the simultaneous dropout of MeV electrons and 100s keV protons during an intense geomagnetic storm in May 2017. Abstract:Starting from 29 January 2022, a series of solar eruptions triggered a moderate geomagnetic storm on 3 February 2022, followed subsequently by another. Despite the typically minimal impact of unintense storms on space technology, 38 out of the 49 Starlink satellites underwent orbital decay, re‐entering Earth's atmosphere. These satellite losses were attributed to enhanced atmospheric drag conditions. This study employs numerical simulations, utilizing our test particle simulation code, to investigate the dynamics of the inner radiation belt during the two magnetic storms. Our analysis reveals an increase in proton density and fluxes during the transition from the recovery phase of the first storm to the initial phase of the second, primarily driven by intense solar wind dynamic pressure. Additionally, we assess Single Event Upset (SEU) rates, which exhibit a 50% increase in comparison to initial quiet conditions.

The Evolutions of the Seed and Relativistic Electrons in the Earth's Outer Radiation Belt during the Geomagnetic Storms: A Statistical Study

Abstract:Using the Van Allen Probes data, we statistically study the evolutions of the seed and relativistic electrons in the Earth's outer radiation belt during the storms. Based on the different storm intensities and durations of the main phase, the storm events are divided into "moderate and short events (MS)", "moderate and long events (ML)", "strong and short events (SS)", and "strong and long events (SL)". The results from a superposed epoch analysis show that (1) For most MS and SS events, the seed electron fluxes can exceed pre‐storm levels, and enhanced fluxes mainly occur around the storm peak. (2) For the ML and SL events, the seed electron fluxes greatly exceed pre‐storm levels by more than an order of magnitude, and enhanced fluxes mainly occur during the main phase. (3) For most MS events, MeV electron fluxes are difficult to return to or exceed pre‐storm levels. While MeV electron fluxes at some L* shells for some SS events can exceed pre‐storm levels. (4) For most ML or SL events, MeV electron fluxes at L* ≥ 4.0 or ≥ 3.5 can exceed pre‐storm levels, and enhanced fluxes mainly start to occur from the main phase. These results suggest that the duration of the main phase and storm intensity play important roles in the evolutions of the seed and MeV electrons in the Earth's outer radiation belt during the storms. Electron Drift Echoes Induced by Negative Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure Pulses

Abstract:Sudden dropouts of the relativistic electron fluxes with drift echoes are closely related to a positive solar wind dynamic pressure pulse, such as an interplanetary shock impact on the magnetosphere. In this study, we further examine how magnetospheric energetic particles response to a negative solar wind dynamic pressure pulse on the 11th May 2017. During this event, sudden dropouts of energetic electron fluxes with an energy of 200 keV∼750 keV and enhancements of the relativistic electron fluxes of 0.85 MeV∼2.7 MeV were observed simultaneously by both Van Allen Probes. The periodic electron flux dropout-recovery or enhancement-decay signatures, which are attributed to electron drift behaviors, exhibited energy dependence. Based on the electron phase space density profile and the induced electric field variation, we interpreted this phenomenon as the consequence of radially outward transportationss of electrons caused by the electric field impulse induced by the negative dynamic pressure pulse.
Lightning-induced relativistic electron precipitation from the inner radiation belt

Abstract:The Earth's radiation belts are maintained by a number of acceleration, loss and transport mechanisms, and the electron fluxes at any given time are highly variable. Microbursts, which are rapid (sub-second) bursts of energetic electrons entering the atmosphere from the magnetosphere, are one of the key loss mechanisms controlling radiation belt fluxes. Such rapid bursts are typically observed from the outer radiation belt and driven by interactions with whistler mode chorus waves, but they can also occur in the inner belt and slot region, driven by lightning-generated whistlers. This lightning-induced electron precipitation is typically observed at 10s-100s keV, but here we present direct observations of this phenomenon at MeV energies. This unveils a coupling between near-Earth processes, such as lightning, and radiation belt processes, such as relativistic electron microbursts, bridging the gap between Earth weather and space weather.
