Abstract:The relativistic (~500 keV–2 MeV) and ultra-relativistic (~> 2 MeV) electron three-belt structure can originate from the partial depletion of the preexisting outer belt and replenishment of the new belt without direct electron injections. These processes may be related to radial diffusion caused by ULF (Ultra-Low Frequency) waves and local acceleration by VLF (Very-Low Frequency) waves. In this study, we reported a three-belt event with several hundred keV electrons based on Arase observation. The partial depletion of the outer belt and subsequent formation of a new belt due to source and seed electron (~30–500 keV) injection may be the primary mechanisms responsible for the three-belt structure. This discovery showed that the three-belt structure might not be limited to relativistic and ultra-relativistic electrons. Our study provided evidence for the existence of the source and seed electron three-belt structure, which could help improve our understanding of the radiation belt configuration.
The Characteristics of Three‐Belt Structure of Sub‐MeV Electrons in the Radiation Belts

Abstract:After the launch of Van Allen Probes, the three‐belt structures of ultra‐relativistic electrons are discovered. In this study, we investigate the three‐belt structures of sub‐MeV electrons, which may form under different mechanism compared with those of ultra‐relativistic electrons and are worth in‐depth analysis. Based on the differential flux data from Magnetic Electron Ion Spectrometer onboard Radiation Belt Storm Probes‐B satellite, we find 54 events, in which two comparable peaks of sub‐MeV electron fluxes and a slot appear where there should be the outer radiation belt. Through the statistical analysis, the three‐belt structures of sub‐MeV electrons are found to be closely related to symmetric H‐component (SYM‐H) and Auroral Electrojet (AE) indices. The 2‐day SYM‐H minimum and AE maximum before the event have a linear trend with the remnant belt and the “second slot” locations. The L‐values of the remnant belt and the “second slot” of different energy electrons decrease as energy increases in general and show interesting characteristics during their temporal evolution. Moreover, the lifetime of the remnant belt of different energy electrons increases as energy increases. We find similarities and differences between sub‐MeV and ultra‐relativistic electrons three‐belt events, which provides a new perspective in three‐belt structure study.

Abstract:Van Allen radiation belts are typically two zones of energetic particles encircling the Earth separated by the slot region. How the outer radiation belt electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies remains an unanswered question. Recent studies have presented compelling evidence for the local acceleration by very-low-frequency (VLF) chorus waves. However, there has been a competing theory to the local acceleration, radial diffusion by ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves, whose importance has not yet been determined definitively. Here we report a unique radiation belt event with intense ULF waves but no detectable VLF chorus waves. Our results demonstrate that the ULF waves moved the inner edge of the outer radiation belt earthward 0.3 Earth radii and enhanced the relativistic electron fluxes by up to one order of magnitude near the slot region within about 10 h, providing strong evidence for the radial diffusion of radiation belt relativistic electrons.
A Short‐lived Three‐Belt Structure for Sub‐mev Electrons in the Van Allen Belts: Time Scale and Energy Dependence

Abstract:In this study we focus on the radiation belt dynamics driven by the geomagnetic storms during September 2017. Besides the long‐lasting three‐belt structures of ultrarelativistic electrons (>2 MeV, existing for tens of days), which has been studied intensively during the Van Allen Probe era, it is found that magnetospheric electrons of hundreds of keVs can also have three‐belt structures at similar L extent during storm time. Measurements of 500–800 keV electrons from MagEIS instrument onboard Van Allen Probes show double‐peaked (L = 3.5 and 4.5, respectively) flux‐versus‐L‐shell profile in the outer belt, which lasted for 2–3 days. During the time interval of such transient three‐belt structure, the energy‐versus‐L spectrogram shows novel distributions differing from both “S‐shaped” and “V‐shaped” spectrograms reported previously. Such peculiar distribution also illustrates the energy‐dependent occurrence of the three‐belt profile. The gradual formation of “reversed energy spectrum” at L ∼ 3.5 also indicates that hiss scattering inside the plasmapause contributed to the fast decay of sub‐MeV remnant belt.
Relativistic and Ultra-Relativistic Electron Bursts in Earth's Magnetotail Observed by Low-Altitude Satellites

Abstract:Earth's magnetotail, a night-side region characterized by stretched magnetic field lines and strong plasma currents, is the primary site for the release of magnetic field energy and its transformation into plasma heating and kinetic energy plus charged particle acceleration during magnetic reconnection. In this study, we demonstrate that the efficiency of this acceleration can be sufficiently high to produce populations of relativistic and ultra-relativistic electrons, with energies up to several MeV, which exceeds all previous theoretical and simulation estimates. Using data from the low altitude ELFIN and CIRBE CubeSats, we show multiple events of relativistic electron bursts within the magnetotail, far poleward of the outer radiation belt. These bursts are characterized by power-law energy spectra and can be detected during even moderate substorms.

Abstract:Using data from ACE and low-altitude polar orbit satellite of NOAA, we investigate the possible sources of the enhancements of relativistic electrons in the magnetosphere. The observations from NOAA for the different geomagnetic activity periods show that substorms injections provide seed electrons for MeV electron enhancement associated with geomagnetic storms and the energetic electrons in the solar wind provide an alternative source for the relativistic electrons in the magnetosphere during the SEP events.

Variations of the relativistic electron flux after a magnetospheric compression event

Abstract:On January 21, 2015, a sharp increase of the solar wind dynamic pressure impacted the magnetosphere. The magnetopause moved inward to the region L < 8 without causing a geomagnetic storm. The flux of the relativistic electrons in the outer radiation belt decreased by half during this event based on the observations of the particle radiation monitor (PRM) of the fourth of the China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellites (CBERS-4). The flux remained low for approximately 11 d; it did not recover after a small magnetic storm on January 26 but after a small magnetic storm on February 2. The loss and recovery of the relativistic electrons during this event are investigated using the PRM data, medium- and high-energy electron observations of NOAA-15 and the Van Allen Probes, medium-energy electron observations of GOES-13, and wave observations of the Van Allen Probes. This study shows that the loss of energetic electrons in this event is related to magnetospheric compression. The chorus waves accelerate the medium-energy electrons, which causes the recovery of relativistic electrons. The Van Allen Probes detected strong chorus waves in the region L = 3–6 from January 21 to February 2. However, the flux of medium-energy electrons was low in the region. This implies that the long-lasting lack of recovery of the relativistic electrons after this event is due to the lack of the medium-energy “seed” electrons. The medium-energy electrons in the outer radiation belt may be a clue to predict the recovery of relativistic electrons.

Abstract:How relativistic electrons are lost is an important question surrounding the complex dynamics of the Earth's outer radiation belt. Radial loss to the magnetopause and local loss to the atmosphere are two main competing paradigms. Here on the basis of the analysis of a radiation belt storm event on 27 February 2014, we present new evidence for the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave-driven local precipitation loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of the outer radiation belt. During the main phase of this storm, the radial profile of relativistic electron phase space density was quasi-monotonic, qualitatively inconsistent with the prediction of radial loss theory. The local loss at low L shells was required to prevent the development of phase space density peak resulting from the radial loss process at high L shells. The rapid loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of outer radiation belt was observed as a dip structure of the electron flux temporal profile closely related to intense EMIC waves. Our simulations further confirm that the observed EMIC waves within a quite limited longitudinal region were able to reduce the off-equatorially mirroring relativistic electron fluxes by up to 2 orders of magnitude within about 1.5 h.

Abstract:Electrons in Earth's outer radiation belt are highly dynamic, with fluxes changing by up to orders of magnitude. The penetration of electrons from the outer belt to the inner belt is one such change observed during geomagnetic storms and was previously observed in electrons up to 1 MeV for some strong storms observed by the Van Allen Probes. We analyze pulse height analysis data from the Relativistic Electric and Proton Telescope (REPT) on the Van Allen Probes to produce electron flux measurements with lower minimum energy and significantly improved resolution compared to the standard REPT data and show that electron penetrations into the inner belt (L ≤ 2) extend to at least 1.3 MeV and penetrations into the slot region (2
