Abstract:Magnetic reconnection has been proposed to play an important role in energy dissipation in space plasma. The diffusion region is an essential place for generation of energetic electrons. However, the mechanism responsible for the generation of these energetic electrons in such a confined region remains elusive. Here a diffusion region of asymmetric reconnection is observed at the turbulent magnetopause. The diffusion region is a rather structured region where two dynamical filamentary currents at subion scale were observed. Intense electron flow and nonideal electric field inside the filamentary currents induced significant energy dissipation. Concurrently, the electron parallel temperature between the current layers increases from 58 to 80 eV. Direct evidence indicates that the electrons inside the three-dimensional diffusion region are accelerated by the parallel electric fields inside the current layers and are effectively heated by the turbulence between them.

Abstract:The Hall effect is suggested to be responsible for decoupling of electrons and ions in plasma during magnetic reconnection. It leads to redistribution of charged particles during magnetic reconnection. In this paper, charge distribution brought about by the Hall effect during magnetic reconnection is studied by using compressible Hall magnetohydrodynamics numerical simulation. Decoupling of electrons and ions in plasma can be clearly shown in this numerical simulation result. The bimodal structure of electron distribution in the electron diffusion region as well as its motion during magnetic reconnection have been found and discussed.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is the most fundamental energy-transfer mechanism in the universe that converts magnetic energy into heat and kinetic energy of charged particles.For reconnection to occur,the frozen-in condition must break down in a localized region,commonly called the ‘diffusion region’.In Earth’s magnetosphere,ion diffusion regions have already been observed,while electron diffusion regions have not been detected due to their small scales（of the order of a few km）（Paschmann,2008）.In this paper we report,for the first time,in situ observations of an active electron diffusion region by the four Cluster spacecraft at the Earth’s highlatitude magnetopause.The electron diffusion region is characterized by nongyrotropic electron distribution,strong field-aligned currents carried by electrons and bi-directional super-Alfvénic electron jets.Also observed were multiple micro-scale flux ropes,with a scale size of about 5 c/ω pe （12 km,with c/ωpe the electron inertial length）,that are crucial for electron acceleration in the guide-field reconnection process（Drake et al.,2006 a）.The data demonstrate the existence of the electron diffusion region in collisionless guide-field reconnection at the magnetopause.

Abstract:An outstanding question in magnetic reconnection is how is the energy being dissipated in the diffusion region. This paper evaluates the quasi-viscous dissipation in the electron diffusion region (EDR) at Earth's magnetopause by the observations from the Magnetospheric MultiScale mission. We compared two fluid parameters, J ⸳ E ˊ and Pi-D, and found that J ⸳ E ˊ and Pi-D have opposite signs in about half of the examined EDRs. The gyrotropic effect is more important than the non-gyrotropic effect for the viscous dissipation in the diffusion region. One intriguing discovery is that electrons are cooled rather than heated in a large portion of the EDRs, with the compressional effect dominates over the viscous effect in electron thermodynamics. Enthalpy flux flowing into or out from the EDR greatly affect the electron entropy variation within the EDR. This study is an important step towards fully resolving the dissipation mystery in reconnection.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection and plasma turbulence are ubiquitous and key processes in the Universe. These two processes are suggested to be intrinsically related: magnetic reconnection can develop turbulence, and, in turn, turbulence can influence or excite magnetic reconnection. In this study, we report a rare and unique electron diffusion region (EDR) observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the Earth's magnetotail with significantly enhanced energetic particle fluxes. The EDR is in a region of strong turbulence within which the plasma density is dramatically depleted. We present three salient features. (1) Despite the turbulence, the EDR behaves nearly the same as that in 2D quasi-planar reconnection; the observations suggest that magnetic reconnection continues for several minutes. (2) The observed reconnection electric field and inferred energy transport are exceptionally large. However, the aspect ratio of the EDR (one definition of reconnection rate) is fairly typical. Instead, extraordinarily large-amplitude Hall electric fields appear to enable the strong energy transport. (3) We hypothesize that the high-energy transport rate, density depletion, and the strong particle acceleration are related to a near-runaway effect, which is due to the combination of low-plasma-density inflow (from lobes) and possible positive feedback between turbulence and reconnection. The detailed study on this EDR gives insight into the interplay between reconnection and turbulence, and the possible near-runaway effect, which may play an important role in other particle acceleration in astrophysical plasma.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection, a fundamental plasma process transforming magnetic field energy into particle energy, is ubiquitous in space and responsible for many explosive phenomena, such as solar flares and gamma-ray bursts. Recent numerical theories have predicted that reconnection fronts far from the primary reconnection region can host secondary reconnection in three-dimensional scenarios, different from the conventional two-dimensional diagram where only one X-line stands to sustain reconnection. In this study, we provide direct observational evidence for ongoing secondary reconnection in the reconnection front via the unprecedentedly high-cadence data from NASA's MMS mission. The secondary reconnection is identified by the presence of an X-line, a super-Alfvénic electron jet, and nonideal energy dissipation. Different from the primary ion–electron reconnection, the secondary reconnection is electron-only, with its X-line quasi-perpendicular to the primary X-line. Hence reconnection, when evolving from local to global scales, becomes essentially three-dimensional with different patterns developed. These results provide crucial insights into understanding cross-scale energy transport driven by reconnection in space plasmas.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection in a current sheet is commonly found in astrophysical plasma environments. If it is often bursty, releasing magnetic free energy explosively, in planetary magnetospheres, it instead displays a quasi-steady state in the solar wind, where the energy is dissipated via slow-mode shocks. The reason for this difference is elusive. Here we present a direct observation of bursty and turbulent magnetic reconnection in the solar wind, with its associated exhausts bounded by a pair of slow-mode shocks. We infer that the plasma is more efficiently heated in the magnetic reconnection diffusion region than across the shocks and that the flow enhancement is much higher in the exhausts than in the area around the diffusion region. We detected 75 other, similar diffusion-region events in solar wind data between October 2017 and May 2019, suggesting that bursty reconnection in the solar wind is more common than previously thought and actively contributes to solar wind acceleration and heating.

Electron-only Reconnection in Ion-scale Current Sheet at the Magnetopause

Abstract:In the standard model of magnetic reconnection, both ions and electrons couple to the newly reconnected magnetic field lines and are ejected away from the reconnection diffusion region in the form of bidirectional burst ion and electron jets. Recent observations propose a new model: electron only magnetic reconnection without ion coupling in electron scale current sheet. Based on the data from Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) Mission, we observe a long extension inner electron diffusion region (EDR) at least 40 di away from the X line at the terrestrial Magnetopause, implying that the extension of EDR is much longer than the prediction of the theory and simulations. This inner EDR is embedded in an ion scale current sheet (the width of 4 di, di is ion inertial length). However, such ongoing magnetic reconnection was not accompanied with burst ion outflow, implying the presence of electron only reconnection in ion scale current sheet. Our observations present new challenge for understanding the model of standard magnetic reconnection and electron only reconnection model in electron scale current sheet.

Abstract:Understanding electron kinetic processes is crucial for elucidating the energy conversion mechanisms in magnetic reconnection. Non‐Maxwellian electron distributions are strong indicators of kinetic‐scale processes near the electron diffusion region, yet they remain incompletely understood. Using in‐situ spacecraft data from 29 magnetopause reconnection events, we unambiguously identify a non‐Maxwellian capsule electron distribution near the electron diffusion region. This distribution comprises an elongated component parallel with the magnetic field at lower energies and a butterfly component (with peaks at pitch angles near 45° and 135° ) at higher energies. We provide evidence that these distributions are partly linked to electron trapping and preferential heating along the direction of magnetic fields. The parallel electric potentials needed for the parallel heating may be linked to kinetic Alfvén waves. These capsule‐like electron distributions are also found to generate whistler emissions. Our results suggest that these kinetic processes are prevalent in magnetic reconnection.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is a universal phenomenon existing in the space. Energy conversion is one of the essential parts of reconnection discussed for decades. Positive energy conversion (J·E′ > 0) is usually regarded as the sign of electron diffusion region (EDR), while the negative one (J·E′ < 0) turns out to gather in the outer EDR. Here we report the negative J·E′ appearing in the inflow edge of the inner EDR, based on Magnetospheric Multiscale mission observations and particle‐in‐cell simulations. Both observations and simulations verify that this negative J·E′ is mainly contributed from the electron pressure tensor term in generalized Ohm's law. The energy loss of electrons plays the dominant effect in the electron pressure tensor, and this energy decline is caused by the electric field which is induced by the decreasing magnetic field. Our results provide significant insights to expand the understanding of the reconnection regimes.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is an explosive energy-release process in laboratory, space and astrophysical plasmas. While magnetic fields can `break' and `reconnect' in a very small region called the electron diffusion region (EDR), there have been conflicting theories as to whether this region can be a place of rapid energization of plasmas. Here we report a fortuitous encounter of the EDR by THEMIS in the Earth's magnetotail where significant heating and demagnetization of electrons were observed. Additional energization was observed on both sides (immediate upstream and downstream) of the EDR, leading to a total of more than an order of magnitude energization across this region. The results demonstrate that, despite its minuscule size, the EDR does indeed contribute to the overall process of electron energization via magnetic reconnection.

Abstract:Using measurements by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft in the magnetotail, we studied electron distribution functions across an electron diffusion region. The dependence of the non-gyrotropic distribution on the energy and vertical distance from the EDR mid-plane was revealed for the first time. The non-gyrotropic distribution was observed everywhere except for an extremely narrow layer right at the EDR mid-plane. The energy of the non-gyrotropic distribution increased with growth of the vertical distance from the mid-plane. For the electrons within certain energy range, they exhibited the non-gyrotropic distribution at the distance further away from the mid-plane than that expected from the meandering motion. The correlation between the crescent-shaped distribution with multiple stripes and the large Hall electric field was established. It appears that the measured non-gyrotropic distribution and the crescent-shaped distribution were caused by the meandering motion and the Hall electric field together.
A new Look at the Electron Diffusion Region in Asymmetric Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:A new look at the structure of the electron diffusion region in collisionless magnetic reconnection is presented. The research is based on a particle-in-cell simulation of asymmetric magnetic reconnection, which include a temperature gradient across the current layer in addition to density and magnetic field gradient. We find that none of X-point, flow stagnation point, and local current density peak coincide. Current and energy balance analyses around the flow stagnation point and current density peak show consistently that current dissipation is associated with the divergence of nongyrotropic electron pressure. Furthermore, the same pressure terms, when combined with shear-type gradients of the electron flow velocity, also serve to maintain local thermal energy against convective losses. These effects are similar to those found also in symmetric magnetic reconnection. In addition, we find here significant effects related to the convection of current, which we can relate to a generalized diamagnetic drift by the nongyrotropic pressure divergence. Therefore, only part of the pressure force serves to dissipate the current density. However, the prior conclusion that the role of the reconnection electric field is to maintain the current density, which was obtained for a symmetric system, applies here as well. Finally, we discuss related features of electron distribution function in the EDR.

Abstract:We present one case study of magnetic islands and energetic electrons in the reconnection diffusion region observed by the Cluster spacecraft. The cores of the islands are characterized by strong core magnetic fields and density depletion. Intense currents, with the dominant component parallel to the ambient magnetic field, are detected inside the magnetic islands. A thin current sheet is observed in the close vicinity of one magnetic island. Energetic electron fluxes increase at the location of the thin current sheet, and further increase inside the magnetic island, with the highest fluxes located at the core region of the island. We suggest that these energetic electrons are firstly accelerated in the thin current sheet, and then trapped and further accelerated in the magnetic island by betatron and Fermi acceleration.

Abstract:Electron dynamics and energization are one of the key components of magnetic field dissipation in collisionless reconnection. In 2D numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection, the main mechanism that limits the current density and provides an effective dissipation is most probably the electron pressure tensor term, that has been shown to break the frozen-in condition at the x-point. In addition, the electron-meandering-orbit scale controls the width of the electron dissipation region, where the electron temperature has been observed to increase both in recent Magnetospheric Multiple-Scale (MMS) observations as well as in laboratory experiments, such as the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment (MRX). By means of two-dimensional full-particle simulations in an open system, we investigate how the energy conversion and particle energization depend on the guide field intensity. We study the energy transfer from magnetic field to the plasma, ${\bf E}\cdot {\bf J}$ and the threshold guide field separating two regimes where either the parallel component, $E_{||}J_{||}$, or the perpendicular component, ${\bf E}_{\perp}\cdot {\bf J}_{\perp}$, dominate the energy transfer, confirming recent MRX results and also consistent with MMS observations. We calculate the energy partition between fields, kinetic, and thermal energy of different species, from electron to ion scales, showing there is no significant variation for different guide field configurations. Finally we study possible mechanisms for electron perpendicular heating by examining electron distribution functions and self-consistently evolved particle orbits in high guide field configurations.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection, a change of magnetic field connectivity, is a fundamental physical process in which magnetic energy is released explosively, and it is responsible for various eruptive phenomena in the universe. However, this process is difficult to observe directly. Here, the magnetic topology associated with a solar reconnection event is studied in three dimensions using the combined perspectives of two spacecraft. The sequence of extreme ultraviolet images clearly shows that two groups of oppositely directed and non-coplanar magnetic loops gradually approach each other, forming a separator or quasi-separator and then reconnecting. The plasma near the reconnection site is subsequently heated from ∼1 to ≥5 MK. Shortly afterwards, warm flare loops (∼3 MK) appear underneath the hot plasma. Other observational signatures of reconnection, including plasma inflows and downflows, are unambiguously revealed and quantitatively measured. These observations provide direct evidence of magnetic reconnection in a three-dimensional configuration and reveal its origin.
Energy Dissipation in Electron-only Reconnection

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in space and astrophysical plasmas that converts magnetic energy to particle energy. Recently, a novel kind of reconnection, called electron-only reconnection, has been observed in Earth's magnetosheath plasma. A defining characteristic of electron-only reconnection is that electron jets are observed but ion jets are absent. This is in contrast with traditional ion-coupled reconnection, where both ions and electrons exhibit outflowing velocity jets. Findings from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission observations and particle-in-cell simulations show clear signatures of electron heating in electron-only reconnection events, while ions are not heated or cooled in these events. This result is unlike ion-coupled reconnection, where both ions and electrons are heated to varying degrees. The ratio of electron to ion dissipation increases with the local magnetic curvature, indicating that the partition of heat into ions and electrons is dependent on the current-sheet thickness.

Observationally Quantified Reconnection Providing a Viable Mechanism for Active Region Coronal Heating.

Abstract:The heating of the Sun's corona has been explained by several different mechanisms including wave dissipation and magnetic reconnection. While both have been shown capable of supplying the requisite power, neither has been used in a quantitative model of observations fed by measured inputs. Here we show that impulsive reconnection is capable of producing an active region corona agreeing both qualitatively and quantitatively with extreme-ultraviolet observations. We calculate the heating power proportional to the velocity difference between magnetic footpoints and the photospheric plasma, called the non-ideal velocity. The length scale of flux elements reconnected in the corona is found to be around 160 km. The differential emission measure of the model corona agrees with that derived using multi-wavelength images. Synthesized extreme-ultraviolet images resemble observations both in their loop-dominated appearance and their intensity histograms. This work provides compelling evidence that impulsive reconnection events are a viable mechanism for heating the corona.
Observations of Small-scale Magnetic Reconnections within a Magnetic Flux Rope in Earth’s Magnetosheath

Abstract:The small-scale magnetic reconnection, which has been observed in turbulent plasma, is detected in the interior regions of an ion-scale flux rope in the magnetosheath. Reconnecting current sheets are configured with a nearly symmetric inflow boundary condition and a large guide field of six times the asymptotic field. The evidence of ongoing reconnection is consistent with the standard reconnection model, except no ion flow is detected. In this study, the electron shear flow near the current sheets allows the reconnections to occur. Strong dissipation with these reconnections indicate that electromagnetic energy can be effectively transformed into electron heating and kinetic energy. In particular, the small-scale reconnections do not result in an increase in high-energy electrons, but are responsible for an increase in electron flux over a lower energy range of 100–200 eV. Observations indicate that small-scale reconnection is very common and provides an important channel for energy dissipation in the magnetosheath plasma.

Electron Dispersion and Parallel Electron Beam Observed Near the Separatrix

Abstract:The separatrix region is the region between the separatrix and the reconnection jet. Due to the ExB drift and velocity filter effect in which high-energy particles with high parallel speed can be seen prior to low-energy particles along the field line, electrons are separated from ions. The electron dynamics in this region is of interest; however it has not been studied in detail, because of the insufficient resolution of plasma data. We present a slow separatrix crossing event observed by Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) satellite constellation on 1 January 2016, from the magnetosheath side with high-resolution burst mode data. The electron edge and ion edge are clearly distinguished in the separatrix region. Two types of electron dispersion, one with a short duration (~0.3 s) and the other with a longer duration (~13 s) were detected between the electron and ion edges. The rapid dispersion (with small time scale) is mainly in the parallel direction, which might originate from a thin layer with non-frozen-in electrons close to the separatrix. The gradual (long time scale) dispersion is seen from parallel to perpendicular directions, which comes from the ExB drift of a curved D-shape distribution of electrons. The width of the electron diffusion region on the magnetosheath side is estimated based on MMS observation. The observation also reveals an unexpected parallel electron beam outside of the electron edge. Wave-particle interaction or parallel potential in the inflow region may be responsible for the generation of this electron population.
