Abstract:Magnetospheric plasma waves play a significant role in ring current and radiation belt dynamics, leading to pitch angle scattering loss and/or stochastic acceleration of the particles. During a non‐storm time dropout event on 24 September 2013, intense electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves were detected by Van Allen Probe A (Radiation Belt Storm Probes‐A). We quantitatively analyze a conjunction event when Van Allen Probe A was located approximately along the same magnetic field line as MetOp‐01, which detected simultaneous precipitation of >30 keV protons and energetic electrons over an unexpectedly broad energy range (>~30 keV). Multipoint observations together with quasi‐linear theory provide direct evidence that the observed electron precipitation at higher energy (>~700 keV) is primarily driven by EMIC waves. However, the newly observed feature of the simultaneous electron precipitation extending down to ~30 keV is not supported by existing theories and raises an interesting question on whether EMIC waves can scatter such low‐energy electrons.
Physical Mechanism Causing Rapid Changes in Ultrarelativistic Electron Pitch Angle Distributions Right after A Shock Arrival: Evaluation of an Electron Dropout Event

Abstract:Three mechanisms have been proposed to explain relativistic electron flux depletions (dropouts) in the Earth's outer radiation belt during storm times: adiabatic expansion of electron drift shells due to a decrease in magnetic field strength, magnetopause shadowing and subsequent outward radial diffusion, and precipitation into the atmosphere (driven by EMIC wave scattering). Which mechanism predominates in causing electron dropouts commonly observed in the outer radiation belt is still debatable. In the present study, we evaluate the physical mechanism that may be primarily responsible for causing the sudden change in relativistic electron pitch angle distributions during a dropout event observed by Van Allen Probes during the main phase of the 27 February 2014 storm. During this event, the phase space density of ultrarelativistic (>1MeV) electrons was depleted by more than 1 order of magnitude over the entire radial extent of the outer radiation belt (3<L*<5) in less than 6h after the passage of an interplanetary shock. We model the electron pitch angle distribution under a compressed magnetic field topology based on actual solar wind conditions. Although these ultrarelativistic electrons exhibit highly anisotropic (peaked in 90 degrees), energy-dependent pitch angle distributions, which appear to be associated with the typical EMIC wave scattering, comparison of the modeled electron distribution to electron measurements indicates that drift shell splitting is responsible for this rapid change in electron pitch angle distributions. This further indicates that magnetopause loss is the predominant cause of the electron dropout right after the shock arrival.
Lightning-induced relativistic electron precipitation from the inner radiation belt

Abstract:The Earth's radiation belts are maintained by a number of acceleration, loss and transport mechanisms, and the electron fluxes at any given time are highly variable. Microbursts, which are rapid (sub-second) bursts of energetic electrons entering the atmosphere from the magnetosphere, are one of the key loss mechanisms controlling radiation belt fluxes. Such rapid bursts are typically observed from the outer radiation belt and driven by interactions with whistler mode chorus waves, but they can also occur in the inner belt and slot region, driven by lightning-generated whistlers. This lightning-induced electron precipitation is typically observed at 10s-100s keV, but here we present direct observations of this phenomenon at MeV energies. This unveils a coupling between near-Earth processes, such as lightning, and radiation belt processes, such as relativistic electron microbursts, bridging the gap between Earth weather and space weather.

Nonstorm time dropout of radiation belt electron fluxes on 24 September 2013

Abstract:Radiation belt electron flux dropouts during the main phase of geomagnetic storms have received increasing attention in recent years. Here we focus on a rarely reported nonstorm time dropout event observed by Van Allen Probes on 24 September 2013. Within several hours, the radiation belt electron fluxes exhibited a significant (up to 2 orders of magnitude) depletion over a wide range of radial distances (L > 4.5), energies (approximate to 500keV to several MeV) and equatorial pitch angles (0 degrees(e)180 degrees). STEERB simulations show that the relativistic electron loss in the region L = 4.5-6.0 was primarily caused by the pitch angle scattering of observed plasmaspheric hiss and electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. Our results emphasize the complexity of radiation belt dynamics and the importance of wave-driven precipitation loss even during nonstorm times.
Multi-satellite Simultaneous Observations of Magnetopause and Atmospheric Losses of Radiation Belt Electrons During an Intense Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure Pulse

Abstract:Abstract. Radiation belt electron flux dropouts are a kind of drastic variation in the Earth's magnetosphere, understanding of which is of both scientific and societal importance. Using electron flux data from a group of 14 satellites, we report multi-satellite simultaneous observations of magnetopause and atmospheric losses of radiation belt electrons during an event of intense solar wind dynamic pressure pulse. When the pulse occurred, magnetopause and atmospheric loss could take effect concurrently contributing to the electron flux dropout. Losses through the magnetopause were observed to be efficient and significant at L ≳ 5, owing to the magnetopause intrusion into L ∼ 6 and outward radial diffusion associated with sharp negative gradient in electron phase space density. Losses to the atmosphere were directly identified from the precipitating electron flux observations, for which pitch angle scattering by plasma waves could be mainly responsible. While the convection and substorm injections strongly enhanced the energetic electron fluxes up to hundreds of keV, they could delay other than avoid the occurrence of electron flux dropout at these energies. It is demonstrated that the pulse-time radiation belt electron flux dropout depends strongly on the specific interplanetary and magnetospheric conditions and that losses through the magnetopause and to the atmosphere and enhancements of substorm injection play an essential role in combination, which should be incorporated as a whole into future simulations for comprehending the nature of radiation belt electron flux dropouts.

Fast Dropouts of Multi‐mev Electrons Due to Combined Effects of EMIC and Whistler Mode Waves

Abstract:We investigate how whole populations of 2–6 MeV electrons can be quickly lost from the Earth's outer radiation belt at L= 3–6 through precipitation into the atmosphere due to quasi‐linear pitch angle scattering by combined electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) and whistler mode waves of realistic intensities occurring at the same or different local times. We provide analytical estimates of the corresponding relativistic electron lifetimes, emphasizing that the combined effects of both waves can lead to very fast (2–10 h) dropouts. Scaling laws for the loss timescales are derived, allowing us to determine the various plasma and wave parameter domains potentially leading to strong and fast dropouts. The analysis reveals that the fastest MeV electron dropouts occur at approximately the same rate over some high energy range and almost independently of EMIC wave amplitudes above a certain threshold. These results should help to better understand the dynamic variability of the radiation belts.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves have been shown to be able to drive strong electron precipitation, particularly at MeV energies. However, the spatio‐temporal evolution of both the waves and the resulting precipitation is still not well understood. Here we investigate the evolution of relativistic electron precipitation driven by EMIC waves through combined observations from the Van Allen Probes and the CALorimetric Electron Telescope experiment onboard the International Space Station. Two case studies are examined where EMIC waves near the magnetic equator and precipitation at low altitude were detected in close magnetic conjunction, both of which were confined to narrow radial regions but persisted multiple hours. These observations, combined with quasilinear calculations, confirm that long‐lived EMIC waves can drive hours‐long MeV electron precipitation loss. However, the magnitude of the precipitation varied significantly during one of the events, as resonance conditions, particularly plasma density, evolved.

Abstract:The near‐Earth interplanetary environment conditions affect the dynamics of the relativistic electron population quasi‐trapped in the radiation belts. A complex chain of processes observed in the magnetosphere can contribute to the variability of these populations when interplanetary structures, such as the interplanetary counterpart of a solar coronal mass ejection (ICME), and high‐speed solar wind streams (HSS) interact with the magnetosphere. However, as these processes can coexist, it is hard to untangle the relative contribution of each process to the loss of particles and the eventual repopulation. Here we show evidence that it is possible to distinguish the relative contribution of mechanisms related to the loss of the outer radiation belt electrons for an event observed on July 19‐20, 2016. The interaction of an ICME's turbulent sheath with the Earth's magnetosphere resulted in a decrease in the outer radiation belt relativistic electron population. The ultra‐low frequency (ULF) and chorus wave activities are detected in the outer radiation belt during the time when the Earth's magnetosphere is under the influence of the ICME's sheath region, as well as the ICME's magnetic cloud region, while the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in the outer belt are observed only during the sheath region. Dynamic mechanisms such as magnetopause shadowing, outward radial diffusion driven by ULF waves, pitch‐angle scattering driven by both EMIC and chorus waves are quantitatively analyzed. Our results suggest that the structures of the ICMEs can trigger the drivers to generate the different dynamic mechanisms responsible for the radiation belt population variability. Abstract:How relativistic electrons are lost is an important question surrounding the complex dynamics of the Earth's outer radiation belt. Radial loss to the magnetopause and local loss to the atmosphere are two main competing paradigms. Here on the basis of the analysis of a radiation belt storm event on 27 February 2014, we present new evidence for the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave-driven local precipitation loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of the outer radiation belt. During the main phase of this storm, the radial profile of relativistic electron phase space density was quasi-monotonic, qualitatively inconsistent with the prediction of radial loss theory. The local loss at low L shells was required to prevent the development of phase space density peak resulting from the radial loss process at high L shells. The rapid loss of relativistic electrons in the heart of outer radiation belt was observed as a dip structure of the electron flux temporal profile closely related to intense EMIC waves. Our simulations further confirm that the observed EMIC waves within a quite limited longitudinal region were able to reduce the off-equatorially mirroring relativistic electron fluxes by up to 2 orders of magnitude within about 1.5 h.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are known to typically cause electron losses into Earth's upper atmosphere at >~1 MeV, while the minimum energy of electrons subject to efficient EMIC‐driven precipitation loss is unresolved. This letter reports electron precipitation from subrelativistic energies of ~250 keV up to ~1 MeV observed by the Focused Investigations of Relativistic Electron Burst Intensity, Range and Dynamics (FIREBIRD‐II) CubeSats, while two Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) observed proton precipitation nearby. Van Allen Probe A detected EMIC waves (~0.7–2.0 nT) over the similar L shell extent of electron precipitation observed by FIREBIRD‐II, albeit with a ~1.6 magnetic local time (MLT) difference. Although plasmaspheric hiss and magnetosonic waves were also observed, quasi‐linear calculations indicate that EMIC waves were the most efficient in driving the electron precipitation. Quasi‐linear theory predicts efficient precipitation at >0.8–1 MeV (due to H‐band EMIC waves), suggesting that other mechanisms are required to explain the observed subrelativistic electron precipitation.
Relativistic Electron Fluxes Dropout in the Outer Radiation Belt under Different Solar Wind Conditions

Abstract:In this study, we apply superposed epoch analysis to the 1.5–6.0 MeV electron flux dropout events observed on Solar, Anomalous, Magnetospheric Particle Explorer satellite for 110 magnetic storms related to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) associated with interplanetary shocks during 1998–2003, which can help to study one of the scientific objectives of the recently launched Van Allen Probe—to determine and quantify the mechanisms of the losses in the outer radiation belt. Results obtained in this paper show that the impact of high solar wind dynamic pressure (Pdy) on the magnetosphere would lead to much larger electron flux dropout than low dynamic pressure. Furthermore, it is shown that southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) condition can result in more significant dropout compared with northward IMF condition. In addition, the largest local dropout is caused by high Pdy with northward IMF at L∼5.1. Dropouts under high Pdy and southward IMF conditions are the largest, whereas dropouts under low Pdy and northward IMF conditions are the smallest. Our study tackles the problem of quantifying the dropouts of electrons by calculating the radiation belt content index and finding the spatial distribution of dropout and the location of maximum dropout. Another finding is that Pdy and IMF affect the dropouts in CME‐driven storms. These new findings provide insight into which mechanisms play a more important role in different dropout events.
Direct Observation of Low-Energy Electron Precipitation in the Subauroral Region

Abstract:This study used data collected by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) to identify a unique subauroral arc in the duskside, which is associated with precipitations of both ions and electrons. The auroral arc was found to be separated from the auroral oval, extending from 14 to 19 magnetic local time hours. Subauroral arcs are usually generated by energetic protons with energies above approximately 10 keV, while enhanced fluxes of low-energy (<200 eV) electrons were revealed to occur and last for a few hours in this arc region from in situ observations by the DMSP satellite. The observations from RBSP-B indicate that the low-energy electron fluxes, with pitch angles near the loss cone, were accompanied by intensified electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves. It is suggested that the enhanced fluxes of cold electrons were heated by the Landau damping of the observed H+ band EMIC waves, which was in the frequency range below the local H+ gyrofrequency and above the local He+ gyrofrequency. Additionally, both electron density and temperature in the ionosphere increased significantly. This study, using conjugate observations of magnetospheric and ionospheric spacecraft, providing evidence of precipitation of low-energy electrons within the subauroral arc region, thereby offering new insight into understanding the ionospheric effects of cold electron heating by EMIC waves.

Two-step Dropouts of Radiation Belt Electron Phase Space Density Induced by a Magnetic Cloud Event

Abstract:We report a two-step dropout event of radiation belt electron phase space density (PSD) induced by a typical magnetic cloud (MC) that drove an intense geomagnetic storm. The first and second steps of PSD dropout occurred, respectively, in the initial and main phases of the storm with a short-time partial recovery between the two dropouts. In this event, the initial phase after the sudden commencement lasted for near 21 hr, which gives an ideal opportunity to investigate the nature of the radiation belt electron dropout by isolating the main phase from any losses occurring during the initial phase. Detailed analysis shows that the first step of the dropout in the initial phase is likely associated with the magnetopause shadowing effect in combination with ultra-low frequency wave-induced outward transport caused by sustaining enhanced dynamic pressure activity before the MC. Comparably, the prolonged strong southward interplanetary magnetic field inside the MC that resulted in the storm main phase is supposed to play an important role in the second step of significant electron losses to the interplanetary space. Additionally, the partial recovery of electron PSD between the two steps of the dropout is possibly due to the acceleration processes via wave-particle interactions with whistler-mode chorus waves. Our study demonstrated that persistently enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure, which is frequently observed inside interplanetary coronal mass ejections and corotating interaction regions, can play an important role in modulating the radiation belt electron dynamics before the storm main phase driven by these solar wind disturbances.

Abstract:Relativistic electron precipitation (REP) refers to the release of high‐energy electrons initially trapped in the outer radiation belt, which then precipitate into Earth's upper atmosphere, contributing significantly to the rapid depletion of radiation belt electron flux. This study presents a statistical analysis of REP observations collected by the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) experiment aboard the International Space Station from 2015 to the present day. Specifically, the analysis utilizes count rates acquired from the two top scintillators constituting the top charge detector, each sensitive to electrons with energies above 1.5 and 3.4 MeV, respectively. Analysis of CALET data reveals a previously unreported semi‐annual variation in the occurrence of REP events. REP periodicities resemble those observed for trapped electron fluxes in the outer belt. Furthermore, their amplitude follows the overall trend of solar wind high‐speed streams and the solar activity.

Radiation belt electron precipitation in the upper ionosphere at middle latitudes before strong earthquakes

Abstract:In this article we present examples of a wider study of space-time correlation of electron precipitation event of the Van Allen belts with the position and time of occurrence of strong (M>6.5) earthquakes. The study is based on the analysis of observations of electron bursts (EBs) with energies 70 - 2350 keV at middle geographic latitudes, which were detected by DEMETER satellite (at an altitude of ~700 km). The EBs show a relative peak-to-background increase usually < 100, they have a time duration ~0.5 - 3 min, energy spectrum with peaks moving in higher energies as the satellite moves towards the equator, and highest energy limit <~500 keV. The EBs are observed in the presence of VLF waves. The flux-time profile of the EBs varies in East Asia and Mediterranean Sea at the similar geographic latitudes, due to the differentiation of the magnitude of the earth's magnetic field. The most important result of our study is the characteristic temporal variation of electron precipitation variation which begins with incremental rate several days / a few weeks before major earthquakes, then presents a maximum, and finally become weaker, with a minimun or a pause of the electron precipitation some hours before the onset of the earthquake.

Abstract:Precipitating plasma sheet, ring current, and radiation belt electrons will affect the ionization level and composition of the neutral atmosphere. Knowledge gaps remain regarding the frequency, intensity, and energy spectrum of the Medium Energy Electron precipitation (≳30 keV). In particular, the understanding and predictive capabilities of the high-energy tail (≳300 keV) are, in general, poor. This study builds on a recently published statistical analysis based on loss cone electron flux estimates on MEPED observations on board the POES/Metop satellites over a full solar cycle from 2004–2014. Data from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres (55–70°N/S) were combined in daily flux estimates. Flux peaks above the 90th percentile of the >43 kev flux were identified. The 33% highest and lowest associated responses in the >292 keV fluxes were labeled “E3 events” and “E1 events”, respectively, resulting in 55 events of each type. It was evident that high geomagnetic activity increases the probability of E3 events. While no single solar wind parameter nor geomagnetic index was able to identify the type of event, Kp and Dst possessed the best predictive capabilities. By detailed examination of the 55 E1 and 55 E3 events, this follow-up study shows that the Kp-index partly classifies a different subset of E1 and E3 events compared to the Dst-index. This makes a combined determination of the limits Dst ≥ −26 and ≤ −48 nT and Kp*10 ≤ 33 and ≥ 40, highly effective. Knowing the solar wind driver modifies the combined Kp and Dst limits slightly and correctly labels 85% of events. Despite their differences, common features become apparent for the ambiguous events: a persistent southward Bz alongside sustained substorm onset activity will generate high-energy tail electron precipitation. The concurrent criteria provide insight into when and why high-energy tail electron precipitation occurs.
