Abstract:Ammonia emissions from industrial processes have rapidly increased in the past years. Recent advances have used carbon-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology combined with a reaction-regeneration process to reduce NOx from sintering flue gas, while NH3 slip is seldom accounted for in this process. This study demonstrates that although the electrophilic carboxyl groups (-COOH) on metal-free carbon catalysts exhibit strong adsorption toward NH3, they do not participate in the SCR reaction. As a result of the competitive adsorption of NH3 in the reaction step, these catalytic inactive carboxyl groups not only prolong the time to the SCR steady state, but also result in the potential risk of NH3 slip. A linear relationship with the equimolar ratio between carboxyl groups and slipped NH3 was established in the regeneration steps. The slip of NH3 could be alleviated by the decomposition of carboxyl groups, and special attention should be paid to the presence of inactive sites with strong NH3 adsorption on industrial-employed carbon catalysts. In addition to advancing the understanding of the NH3-SCR mechanism, this work also provides valuable opportunities for the control of ammonia emissions from industrial processes.

Abstract:Although carbon catalysts have been commercialized for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 for decades, the nature of the active sites remains unclear. Herein we design a proof-of-concept study to directly evidence that the nucleophilic ketonic carbonyl groups are the intrinsic SCR active sites on metal-free carbon catalysts through ex situ and in situ selective passivation strategies. The turnover frequency of the ketonic carbonyl group is provided, and the structure–reactivity relationship is established for the first time. Density functional theory calculations combined with in situ spectroscopy reveal that the standard carbon-catalyzed SCR reaction involves a redox cycle of ketonic carbonyl/phenol (CO/C–OH) pairs, during which the activation of NH3 is the rate-limiting step. This work identifies the intrinsic SCR active sites and advances the metal-free carbon catalysis. As a further step, the carbon catalysts demonstrate analogous mechanistic features with vanadyl catalysts, opening up the possibility to parallel the SCR mechanisms on metal-free carbon catalysts to those on transition-metal catalysts on the atomic scale.

In Situ DRIFTS Studies of NH3-SCR Mechanism over V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 Catalysts for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx

Abstract:TiO2-ZrO2 (Ti-Zr) carrier was prepared by a co-precipitation method and 1 wt. % V2O5 and 0.2 CeO2 (the Mole ratio of Ce to Ti-Zr) was impregnated to obtain the V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3. The transient activity tests and the in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) analyses were employed to explore the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) mechanism systematically, and by designing various conditions of single or mixing feeding gas and pre-treatment ways, a possible pathway of NOx reduction was proposed. It was found that NH3 exhibited a competitive advantage over NO in its adsorption on the catalyst surface, and could form an active intermediate substance of -NH2. More acid sites and intermediate reaction species (-NH2), at lower temperatures, significantly promoted the SCR activity of the V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. The presence of O2 could promote the conversion of NO to NO2, while NO2 was easier to reduce. The co-existence of NH3 and O2 resulted in the NH3 adsorption strength being lower, as compared to tests without O2, since O2 could occupy a part of the active site. Due to CeO2’s excellent oxygen storage-release capacity, NH3 adsorption was weakened, in comparison to the 1 wt. % V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. If NOx were to be pre-adsorbed in the catalyst, the formation of nitrate and nitro species would be difficult to desorb, which would greatly hinder the SCR reaction. All the findings concluded that NH3-SCR worked mainly through the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism.

The CNNS/CP electrode afforded excellent NH3 yield rate of 15.1 μmol h-1 cm-2 (2180.1 mg gcat-1 h-1) and Faradic efficiency (FE) of ∼41.5 % at - 0.8 and - 0.6 VRHE, respectively, which were superior to the block g-C3N4 particles and comparable to the most of metal-containing catalysts. Moreover, through adjusting the interface microenvironment of CNNS/CP electrode by hydrophobic treatment, the abundant gas-liquid-solid triphasic interface improved NO mass transfer and availability, which enhanced NH3 production and FE to about 30.7 μmol h-1 cm-2 (4424.2 mg gcat-1 h-1) and 45.6 % at potential of - 0.8 VRHE. This study opens a novel pathway to develop efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for NO electroreduction and highlights the importance of electrode interface microenvironment in electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Sintering flue gas contains significant amounts of harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which pose severe threats to the ecological environment and human health. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is widely employed for the removal of nitrogen oxides, with copper-cerium-based bimetallic catalysts and their derivatives demonstrating excellent catalytic efficiency in SCR reactions, primarily due to the significant synergistic effect between copper and cerium. This paper summarizes the main factors affecting the catalytic performance of Cu-Ce-based bimetallic catalysts and their derivatives in the selective catalytic reduction of ammonia and carbon monoxide. Key considerations include various preparation methods, doping of active components, and the effects of loading catalysts on different supports. This paper also analyzes the influence of surface oxygen vacancies, redox capacity, acidity, and specific surface area on catalytic performance. Additionally, the anti-poisoning performance and reaction mechanisms of the catalysts are discussed. Finally, the paper proposes strategies for designing high-activity and high-stability catalysts, considering the development prospects and challenges of Cu-Ce-based bimetallic catalysts and their derivatives, with the aim of providing theoretical guidance for optimizing Cu-Ce-based catalysts and promoting their industrial applications.

Abstract:To mitigate the threat of NO, on the environment, MnO, nanowires were fabricated on activated semi coke (MnO, NW/ASC) for the first time. The prepared MnO, NW/ASC was used for the low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO, with NH3, which achieved an efficiency of over 90% with a low loading content of 1.64 wt% at 150-210 degrees C. This high performance could be ascribed to synergistic effect between MnO, and ASC. Specifically, the large specific surface area and reducible property of ASC facilitated the dispersion of MnO, and the formation of Mn3+, respectively. Meanwhile, MnO, nanowires provided more redox sites and lattice oxygen species due to the coexistence of Mn3+ and Mn4+, which accelerated the catalytic cycle. The in situ DRIFTS studies revealed that ASC was conducive to the adsorption of NO and NH3. Most importantly, the existence of Mn3+ favored the formation of amide species and the subsequent reduction reaction. Furthermore, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) route between coordinated NH3 and bidentate nitrate was predominating in the SCR process and responsible for the high catalytic activity at low temperature. Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction of NOx by CO (CO‐SCR) is a viable method for simultaneously mitigating NOx and CO emissions in motor vehicle exhaust and industrial flue gases. Extensive research has been conducted on noble metal catalysts because of their superior catalytic activity and stability compared to non‐noble metals. Noble metal catalysts demonstrate efficient NOx conversion and high selectivity for N2. However, achieving high conversion, selectivity, and stability over a wide temperature range in the presence of excess O2, H2O, and SO2 remains a significant challenge. This review summarizes recent advancements in CO‐SCR over noble metal catalysts, providing insights for the development of CO‐SCR catalysts. This paper first examines the reaction mechanisms of CO‐SCR, followed by a discussion on the design and optimization strategies of noble metal catalysts, with a focus on composition and structural effects. This includes creating active metal sites, selecting appropriate supports, integrating catalytic additives, choosing monometallic nanoparticles, alloying, and using single‐atom catalysts. Finally, remaining challenges and potential avenues for future research have been suggested. The discovery of negatively charged noble metal single‐atom‐site catalysts presents new research opportunities.

Abstract:A method based on theoretical DFT calculations to predict the reactivity of supported metal oxide for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 was developed in this study. Surface acidity, oxidizing ability, and reoxidability of the reduced catalyst are crucial for a NO reducing catalyst. In this method, LUMO, hydrogenation, and HOMO energy of the reduced state were used to evaluate the above three properties, respectively. A series of supported metal oxides were calculated and discussed. Based on the computational results, these metal oxides were separated into three categories that can possibly act as "active component", "promoter", and "inactive component", respectively. Experiments were performed to testify our theoretical conclusions. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results has led to an excellent match, which has proven our method to be an effective way to evaluate the reactivity of supported metal oxide for SCR of NO with NH3.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction deNO x technology by ammonia (NH3-SCR) on vanadium-based catalysts is now being used worldwide for industrial exhaust treatment, while the disposal of spent catalysts faces a high level of environmental risk posed by poisonous vanadium. We present here an environmentally friendly deNO x method with pure H-FER zeolite as the catalyst using methanol as a reductant instead of NH3 (CH3OH-SCR). This metal-free zeolite with Brønsted and Lewis acid pairs shows almost 4 times higher activity than the most investigated precious metal catalyst (Ag/Al2O3). Furthermore, it shows a comparable deNO x efficiency with state-of-the-art of NH3-SCR on vanadium-based catalysts, as well as good stability with potential for industrial application. Operando Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), in situ NMR, and theoretical calculations demonstrated that solid acid species are highly active for the CH3OH-SCR reaction. A reaction mechanism based on a synergistic catalytic effect between Si–O(H)–Al sites and neighboring extra-framework aluminum (EFAL) species has been proposed.

Abstract:Selective catalytic reduction of NOx using NH3 or hydrocarbons (NH3-SCR or HC-SCR) in oxygen-rich exhaust from diesel engines remains a major challenge in environmental catalysis. The development of highly efficient, stable and environmentally-benign catalysts for SCR processes is very important for practical use. In this feature article, the structure-activity relationship of vanadium-free catalysts in the NH3-SCR reaction is discussed in detail, including Fe-, Ce-based oxide catalysts and Fe-, Cu-based zeolite catalysts, which is beneficial for catalyst redesign and activity improvement. Based on our research, a comprehensive mechanism contributing to the performance of Ag/Al2O3 in HC-SCR is provided, giving a clue to the design of a catalytic system with high efficiency.

Abstract:Environmental catalysis has attracted great interest in air and water purification. Selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR) as a representative technology of environmental catalysis is of significance to the elimination of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emitting from stationary and mobile sources. However, the evolving energy landscape in the nonelectric sector and the changing nature of fuel in motor vehicles present new challenges for NO x catalytic purification over the traditional NH3-SCR catalysts. These challenges primarily revolve around the application limitations of conventional industrial NH3-SCR catalysts, such as V2O5-WO3(MoO3)/TiO2 and chabazite (CHA) structured zeolites, in meeting both the severe requirements of high activity at ultralow temperatures and robust resistance to the wide array of poisons (SO2, HCl, phosphorus, alkali metals, and heavy metals, etc.) existing in more complex operating conditions of new application scenarios. Additionally, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) coexisting with NO x in exhaust gas has emerged as a critical factor further impeding the highly efficient reduction of NO x . Therefore, confronting the challenges inherent in current NH3-SCR technology and drawing from the established NH3-SCR reaction mechanisms, we discern that the strategic manipulation of the properties of surface acidity and redox over NH3-SCR catalysts constitutes an important pathway for increasing the catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. Concurrently, the establishment of protective sites and confined structures combined with the strategies for triggering antagonistic effects emerge as imperative items for strengthening the antipoisoning potentials of NH3-SCR catalysts. Finally, we contemplate the essential status of selective synergistic catalytic elimination technology for abating NO x and VOCs. By virtue of these discussions, we aim to offer a series of innovative guiding perspectives for the further advancement of environmental catalysis technology for the highly efficient NO x catalytic purification from nonelectric industries and motor vehicles.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction technologies for NOx removal were emphatically introduced. The advantages and disadvantages of selective catalytic reduction of NOx by different reductants( NH3 , H2 ,CO,HC ) were analyzed. It was considered that H2-SCR DeNOx technologies possessed higher research value and practical application prospect. From the perspective of active components,additives and catalyst carriers,the applications and performance of the catalysts in the H2-SCR reaction were ana-lyzed. It was concluded that loading noble metals Pt and Pd,adding acidic promoters and using composite carriers were beneficial to improving the performance of the catalysts. Finally,the future research direction of H2-SCR DeNOx technologies is proposed.
Prominent difference in the deactivation rate and mechanism of V2O5/TiO2 under H2S or SO2 during selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Abstract:Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) over V2O5/TiO2-based catalysts is the most efficient technology to remove nitrogen oxides from stationary sources, where H2S coexists with NOx under variable combustion conditions. For the first time, the poisoning effect of H2S was observed to be almost six-fold that of SO2. Catalyst deactivation under SO2 was mainly caused by ammonium bisulfate while sulfates, especially polymeric sulfate, were the main contributors to H2S poisoning. Theoretical calculations showed that the generation of sulfates was much more energetically favorable under H2S than under SO2, resulting in massive deposition of sulfates and serious damage to vanadyl (VO). Polymeric sulfate could inhibit the charge transfer between the occupied and unoccupied orbitals of VO and suppress NH3 activation, thereby significantly restraining SCR activity. Furthermore, unstable sulfur species were shown to be responsible for the temporary deactivation during H2S poisoning. This work provides crucial information for solving catalyst deactivation.

Abstract:Iron-based mixed oxides are considered commercially promising environmentally friendly catalysts for selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (NH3-SCR) for removing nitrogen oxides (NOx) because of their high catalytic activity. In this work, cold-rolled sludge with high content of iron species was used as the iron precursor for preparing catalysts by supported MnOx and/or sulfuric acid modifications. The prepared catalyst showed 100 % of NOx conversion in the temperature range of 60–180 ℃ and exhibited good resistance to SO2 and H2O. This is mainly attributed to the synergy between MnOx and iron sulfate, which improved the denitration performance at super low-temperature by improving the textural properties, redox capacity, surface acidity, and surface chemical states of the catalyst. Furthermore, the presence of Fe3+ and SO4 2- protected the active ingredient from the poisoning of SO2 and improved its sulfur resistance. The super low-temperature reaction mechanism of the catalyst was unraveled by transient reaction experiments and In situ DRIFTS. The results show that both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites are present in 10 %Mn/CRS-S-400, and that the reaction is dominated by the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) mechanism. This study provides an innovative and cost-effective strategy for the design of NH3-SCR catalysts by sulfation iron-based mixed oxides.

Abstract:For NOx control in the presence of excess oxygen, selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR) has been successfully applied in the purification of coal-fired flue gas and diesel vehicle exhaust on a large scale. For both cases, various NH3-SCR catalysts have been developed, with the incorporation of desirable catalytic properties being the central issue. However, the fundamental principle for designing NH3-SCR catalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability remain unclear. Generally, in the NH3-SCR reaction, the redox and acid sites on the catalyst are prerequisites that need to work together. Therefore, the close coupling of these dual functional sites is imperative for the design of NH3-SCR catalysts with high NOx removal efficiency. Taking this intrinsic principle into account, we successfully designed and developed various novel catalysts with excellent NH3-SCR performance. This review will focus on the theory and practice of designing metal oxide catalysts for NH3-SCR.
