Abstract:As the N equivalent to N bond in N-2 is one of the strongest bonds in chemistry, the fixation of N-2 to ammonia is a kinetically complex and energetically challenging reaction and, up to now, its synthesis is still heavily relying on energy and capital intensive Haber-Bosch process (150-350 atm, 350-550 degrees C), wherein the input of H-2 and energy are largely derived from fossil fuels and thus result in large amount of CO2 emission. In this paper, it is demonstrated that by using Au sub-nanoclusters (approximate to 0.5 nm) embedded on TiO2 (Au loading is 1.542 wt%), the electrocatalytic N-2 reduction reaction (NRR) is indeed possible at ambient condition. Unexpectedly, NRR with very high and stable production yield (NH3: 21.4 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1), Faradaic efficiency: 8.11%) and good selectivity is achieved at -0.2 V versus RHE, which is much higher than that of the best results for N-2 fixation under ambient conditions, and even comparable to the yield and activation energy under high temperatures and/or pressures. As isolated precious metal active centers dispersed onto oxide supports provide a well-defined system, the special structure of atomic Au cluster would promote other important reactions besides NRR for water splitting, fuel cells, and other electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Exploring electrocatalyst with high activity,selectivity and stability is essential for development of applicableelectrocatalytic ammonia synthesis technology. By performing density functionaltheory calculations, we systematically investigated a series of transition-metaldoped Au-based single atom alloys (SAAs) as promising electrocatalysts fornitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). For Au-based electrocatalyst, the firsthydrogenation step (*N2→*NNH) normally determines the limitingpotential of the overall reaction process. Compared with pristine Au(111) surface, introducing single atom can significantlyenhance the binding strength of N2, leading to decreased energy barrierof the key step, i.e., ΔG(*N2→*NNH). According tosimulation results, three descriptors were proposed to describe ΔG(*N2→*NNH), includingΔG(*NNH), d-band center, and . Eight doped elements (Ti, V, Nb, Ru, Ta, Os, W, and Mo)were initially screened out with limiting potential ranging from -0.75V to-0.30 V. Particularly, Mo- and W-doped systems possess the best activity withlimiting potentials of -0.30 V, respectively. Then the intrinsicrelationship between structure and the potential performance was furtheranalyzed by usingmachine-learning. The selectivity, feasibility, stability of these candidateswere also evaluated, confirming that SAA containing Mo, Ru ,Ta, and W could be outstanding NRR electrocatalysts. Thiswork not only broadens the understating of SAA application in electrocatalysis,but also devotes to the discovery of novel NRR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Simultaneously elevating loading and activity of single atoms (SAs) is desirable for SA-containing catalysts, including single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, the fast self-nucleation of SAs limits the loading, and the activity is confined by the adsorption-energy scaling relationships on monotonous SAs. Here, we theoretically design a novel type of SA-containing catalyst generated by two-step structural self-regulation. In the thermodynamic self-regulation step, divacancies in graphene spontaneously pull up SAs from transition metal supports (dv-g/TM; TM = fcc Co, hcp Co, Ni, Cu), leading to the expectably high loading of SAs. The subsequent kinetic self-regulation step involving an adsorbate-assisted and reversible vacancy migration dynamically alters coordination environments of SAs, helping circumvent the scaling relationships, and consequently, the as-designed dv-g/Ni can catalyze NO-to-NH3 conversion at a low limiting potential of -0.25 V vs RHE.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3RR) to synthesize ammonia (NH3) can effectively degrade nitrate while producing a valuable product. By utilizing density functional theory calculations, we investigate the potential catalytic performance of a range of single transition-metal (TM) atoms supported on nitrogenated holey doped graphene (g-C2N) (TM/g-C2N) for the reduction of nitrates to NH3. Based on the screening procedure, Zr/g-C2N and Hf/g-C2N are predicted as potential electrocatalysts for the NO3RR with limiting potential (UL) values of -0.28 and -0.27 V, respectively. The generation of byproducts such as dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen (N2) is hindered on Zr/g-C2N and Hf/g-C2N due to the high energy cost. The NO3RR activity of TM/g-C2N is closely related to the adsorption free energy of NO3-. The study not only proposes a competent electrocatalyst for enhancing NO3RR in ammonia synthesis but also provides a comprehensive understanding of the NO3RR mechanism.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of NO offers us an attractive alternative to traditional selective catalytic reduction process for harmful NO removal and simultaneous NH3 production, but it requires efficient electrocatalyst to enable the NO reduction reaction with high selectivity. Here, we report on the development of Bi nanoparticles/carbon nanosheet composite (Bi@C) for highly effective NO reduction electrocatalysis toward selective NH3 formation. Such Bi@C catalyst attains an impressive NH3 yield of 1,592.5 µg·hr−1·mgcat.−1 and a high Faradaic efficiency as high as 93% in 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Additionally, it can be applied as efficient cathode materials for Zn−NO battery to reduce NO to NH3 with high electricity generation.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrite-to-ammonia reduction (NO2RR) holds great promise for converting harmful NO2 – into valuable NH3. Herein, we develop Co single atoms dispersed on a C3N4 substrate (Co1/C3N4) as an efficient catalyst toward the NO2RR. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that single-atom Co sites can effectively active NO2 – and optimize the formation energy of the key *NOH intermediate to promote the NO2 – → NH3 energetics. Remarkably, Co1/C3N4 equipped in a flow cell delivers the exceptional NH3–Faradaic efficiency of 97.9% and NH3 yield rate of 1080.3 μmol h–1cm–2 at an industrial-level current density of 355 mA cm–2, along with a long-term durability of 100 h of electrolysis, showing the considerable potential for practical NH3 electrosynthesis.

Abstract:Opting for NO as an N source in electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis presents an intriguing approach to tackle energy and environmental challenges. However, blindly pursuing high NH3 synthesis rates and Faradaic efficiency (FE) while ignoring the NO conversion ratio could result in environmental problems. Herein, Cu nanosheets with exposed (111) surface is fabricated and exhibit a NO-to-NH3 yield rate of 371.89 μmol cm-2 h-1 (flow cell) and the highest FE of 93.19±1.99% (H-type cell). The NO conversion ratio is increased to the current highest value of 63.74% combined with the development of the flow cell. Additionally, Crystal Orbital Hamilton Population (COHP) clearly reveals that the "σ-π* acceptance-donation" is the essence of the interaction between the Cu and NO as also supported by operando attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IRAS) in observing the key intermediate of NO-. This work not only achieves a milestone NO conversion ratio for electrocatalytic NO-to-NH3, but also proposes a new descriptor that utilizes orbital hybridization between molecules and metal centers to accurately identify the real active sites of catalysts.

Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrate to Ammonia via a Au/Cu Single Atom Alloy Catalyst.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic ammonia (NH3) synthesis from the reduction of nitrate (NO3-) is one of the effective and mild methods to treat nitrogen-containing wastewater from stationary sources and to obtain NH3 readily compared with the Haber-Bosch process. However, the low efficiency of electrocatalytic NO3- reduction to NH3 on traditional Cu-based catalysts hinders their practical application. Here, we prepare a Au/Cu single atom (SA) alloy (Au/Cu SAA) that shows a high performance of NH3 synthesis with 99.69% Faradaic efficiency at -0.80 V vs RHE. The structures of Au SAs and alloyed Au/Cu are confirmed by the detailed characterizations. Online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirms the occurrence of key reaction intermediates (*NO2, *NO, and *NH3). Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that Au SAs efficiently reduce the adsorption energy of *NO3-, and the newly formed Au-Cu bonds boost the reduction process of *NO2 to *NO. Meanwhile, Au/Cu SAAs produce significantly less N2 and N2O byproducts due to the prohibition of N-N coupling on single atoms, which finally leads to excellent Faradaic efficiency and NH3 selectivity.

Abstract:Metallic Cu is a well‐known electrocatalyst for nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR), but it suffers from relatively low activity, poor stability, and inducing nitrite accumulation during the long‐term operation. Herein, it is found that Cu catalysts minimized at the single‐atom level can overcome the limitations of bulk materials in NO3RR. A metal‐nitrogen‐carbon (M‐N‐C) electrocatalyst composed of carbon nanosheets embedding isolated copper atoms coordinated with N, Cu‐N‐C‐800, is synthesized by pyrolysis of a Cu‐based metal–organic framework at 800 °C. In comparison with Cu nanoparticles and Cu plate‐800, kinetic measurements show that the Cu‐N‐C‐800 electrocatalyst is more active and stable and distinctly suppresses the release of nitrite intermediate into the solution. The combined results of experimental data and density functional theory calculations indicate that Cu bound with N (particularly Cu‐N2) is the key to favorable adsorption of NO3− and NO2−. This strong binding is responsible for the enhanced rate of nitrate conversion to the end products of ammonia and nitrogen. These findings highlight the promise of single‐atom Cu electrocatalysts for nitrate reduction with desirable performance.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of nitric oxide (NO) to ammonia (NH3) offers a sustainable way of simultaneously treating the air pollutant and producing a useful chemical. Among catalyst candidates, Cu emerges as a stand‐out choice for its superb NH3 selectivity and production rate. However, a comprehensive study concerning its catalytic behavior in the NO reduction environment is lacking. Here, we unravel the dynamic rearrangement of Cu catalysts during NO reduction: the emergence of a bundled nanowire structure dependent on the applied potential. This unique structure is closely linked to an enhancement in double‐layer capacitance, leading to a progressive increase in current density from 236 mA cm‐2 by 20% over 1 h, while maintaining a Faradaic efficiency of 95% for NH3. Characterizations of Cu oxidation states suggest that the nanostructure results from the dissolution‐redeposition of Cu in the aqueous electrolyte, influenced by the interaction with NO or other reactive intermediates. This understanding contributes to the broader exploration of Cu‐based catalysts for sustainable and efficient NH3 synthesis from NO.

Screening of Silver‐Based Single‐Atom Alloy Catalysts for NO Electroreduction to NH3 by DFT Calculations and Machine Learning

Abstract:Exploring NO reduction reaction (NORR) electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity toward NH3 is essential for both NO removal and NH3 synthesis. Due to their superior electrocatalytic activities, single-atom alloy (SAA) catalysts have attracted considerable attention. However, the exploration of SAAs is hindered by a lack of fast yet reliable prediction of catalytic performance. To address this problem, we comprehensively screened a series of transition-metal atom doped Ag-based SAAs. This screening process involves regression machine learning (ML) algorithms and a compressed-sensing data-analytics approach parameterized with density-functional inputs. The results demonstrate that Cu/Ag and Zn/Ag can efficiently activate and hydrogenate NO with small Φmax(η), a grand-canonical adaptation of the Gmax(η) descriptor, and exhibit higher affinity to NO over H adatoms to suppress the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. The NH3 selectivity is mainly determined by the s orbitals of the doped single-atom near the Fermi level. The catalytic activity of SAAs is highly correlated with the local environment of the active site. We further quantified the relationship between the intrinsic features of these active sites and Φmax(η). Our work clarifies the mechanism of NORR to NH3 and offers a design principle to guide the screen of highly active SAA catalysts.

Abstract:Atomic transition metal–nitrogen–carbon electrocatalysts exhibit outstanding activity in various electrocatalytic reactions. The challenge lies in predicting the structure of the active center, which may undergo changes under applied potential and interact with reactants or intermediates. Advanced characterization techniques, particularly in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), provide crucial insights into the structural evolution of the metal active center during the reaction. In this study, nitrate reduction to ammonia (NO 3 RR) was selected as a model reaction, and we introduced in-situ XAS to reveal the structural evolution during the catalytic process. A novel single atom catalyst of iron loaded on three-dimensional nitrogen-carbon nanonetwork (designated as Fe SAC/NC) was successfully synthesized. We unraveled the structural transformations occurring as pyrrole-N 4 -Fe transitions to pyrrole-N 3 -Fe throughout the NO 3 RR process. Notably, the Fe SAC/NC catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity, achieving a Faradaic efficiency of 98.2% and an ammonia generation rate of 22,515 μg·h −1 ·mg cat −1 at −0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Theoretical calculations combined with in-situ spectroscopic characterization showed that pyrrole-N 3 -Fe reduced the energy barrier from *NO to *NHO and improved the selectivity of ammonia. This provides a robust reference for the design of efficient nitrate-to-ammonia synthesis catalysts.

Abstract:A N2 fixation by the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction from humidified air is regarded to be a critical tool for producing NH3 and reducing the globally accelerating CO2 emissions. Notwithstanding great efforts to improve catalyst activity and selectivity, promoting catalyst accessibility to high N2 concentrations to ensure that active sites fulfill their function should be a promising design direction. Here, Au nanoparticles are firmly anchored through atomic O on the surface of two-dimensional Ti3C2 using an ultrasound reduction process. Akin to the conspicuous role of the web in the predatory process of spiders, N2 adsorption experiments primarily suggest that a Ti3C2 "web" is beneficial for extraction of N2 from air, and embedding high valence-state Au clusters in the Ti3C2 "web" strengthens the chemical bonding effect toward N2 molecules. The high energy of N2 adsorption on the interface between gold clusters and Ti3C2 is the driving force for weakening triple N≡N bonds, and thereby the activation energy barrier is lowered via effective stabilization of N2H* species and destabilizing NH2NH2* under an alternative pathway. With Au loading content of ∼0.94%, Au/Ti3C2 exhibits an outstanding average yield of 30.06 μg h-1 mg-1 for NH3 production, with a high Faraday efficiency of 18.34% at -0.2 V.

Furthermore, Ni/Ni(OH) 2 sites as vibrant centers for electrocatalytic H 2 O splitting, generating atomic H on the catalyst surface (H ads ), thereby facilitating the rapid conversion of NO 2 ̅ to NH 3 via the H ads -mediated pathway. DFT calculations further substantiate that the H ads -mediated pathway is thermodynamically more favorable than the electron reduction pathway, the former of which facilitates the generation of NH 3 and is an energy-efficient process, thus, the A-Ag@Ni/Ni(OH) 2 NWs show outstanding electrocatalytic activity and selectivity for NO 3 ̅-to-NH 3 transformation at low potential.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3−) to ammonia (NH3) reaction has emerged as an attractive approach for selectively reducing NO3− to highly value-added NH3 and removing NO3− pollutants simultaneously. In this work, heterostructured Co/Co3O4 anchored on N-doped carbon nanotubes was prepared and applied for NO3− reduction towards NH3 in alkaline conditions. The catalyst achieves an outstanding performance with up to 67% NH3 Faradaic efficiency at -1.2 V vs. Hg/HgO and 8.319 mg h-1 mgcat-1 yield at -1.7 V vs. Hg/HgO. In addition, it also displays good long-term stability. 15N isotopic labelling experiments prove that the yielded NH3 is derived from NO3− species. In-situ electrochemical Raman spectra revealed that the structure of as-prepared catalyst showed outstanding stability and identified the possible intermediates during electrocatalytic NO3− reduction reaction (NO3RR).

Abstract:Electrochemical NO 2 − reduction to NH 3 (NO 2 RR) holds significant potential for simultaneously mitigating NO 2 − pollutants and producing valuable NH 3 . Herein, we design single-atom In 1 alloyed Cu (In 1 Cu) as an effective and long-lasting catalyst for the NO 2 RR. Through a combination of experimental and theoretical investigations, we discover that the enhanced NO 2 RR performance of In 1 Cu arises from its surface In 1 -Cu dinuclear sites to promote the NO 2 − activation, optimize the reaction energetics of NHO pathway and suppress the competing hydrogen evolution. As a result, In 1 Cu integrated into the flow cell achieves the outstanding NH 3 -Faradaic efficiency of 94.7 % and NH 3 yield rate of 1042.1 μmol h −1 cm −2 at a high current density of 354 mA cm −2 , placing it among the most effective NO 2 RR catalyst ever reported.
