Abstract:Dark-field X-ray imaging is a novel modality which visualises scattering from unresolved microstructure. Most dark-field imaging techniques rely on crystals or structured illumination, but recent work has shown that dark-field effects are observable in straightforward propagation-based imaging (PBI). Based on the single-material X-ray Fokker--Planck equation with an a priori dark-field energy dependence, we propose an algorithm to extract phase and dark-field effects from dual-energy PBI images. We successfully apply the dark-field retrieval algorithm to simulated and experimental dual-energy data, and show that by accounting for dark-field effects, projected thickness reconstruction is improved compared to the classic Paganin algorithm. With the emergence of spectral detectors, the method could enable single-exposure dark-field imaging of dynamic and living samples.

Abstract:X-ray dark-field imaging visualises scattering from sample microstructure, and has found application in medical and security contexts. While most X-ray dark-field imaging techniques rely on masks, gratings, or crystals, recent work on the Fokker--Planck model of diffusive imaging has enabled dark-field imaging in the propagation-based geometry. Images captured at multiple propagation distances or X-ray energies can be used to reconstruct dark-field from propagation-based images but have previously required multiple exposures. Here, we show single-exposure dark-field imaging by exploiting the harmonic content in a monochromatised synchrotron beam and utilising an energy-discriminating photon-counting detector to capture dual-energy propagation-based images. The method is validated by filming time-varying samples, showing the advantage of the dark-field contrast in analysing dynamic evolution. We measure and adjust for the impact of detector charge-sharing on the images. This work opens the way for low-dose and dynamic dark-field X-ray imaging without the need for a high-stability set-up and precision optics.

Abstract:Conventional energy-integration black-white X-ray imaging lacks the spectral information of X-ray photons. Although X-ray spectra (energy) can be distinguished by the photon-counting technique typically with CdZnTe detectors, it is very challenging to be applied to large-area flat-panel X-ray imaging (FPXI). Herein, multilayer stacked scintillators of different X-ray absorption capabilities and scintillation spectra are designed; in this scenario, the X-ray energy can be discriminated by detecting the emission spectra of each scintillator; therefore, multispectral X-ray imaging can be easily obtained by color or multispectral visible-light camera in a single shot of X-rays. To verify this idea, stacked multilayer scintillators based on several emerging metal halides are fabricated in a cost-effective and scalable solution process, and proof-of-concept multispectral (or multi-energy) FPXI are experimentally demonstrated. The dual-energy X-ray image of a "bone-muscle" model clearly shows the details that are invisible in conventional energy-integration FPXI. By stacking four layers of specifically designed multilayer scintillators with appropriate thicknesses, a prototype FPXI with four energy channels is realized, proving its extendibility to multispectral or even hyperspectral X-ray imaging. This study provides a facile and effective strategy to realize multispectral large-area flat-panel X-ray imaging.

Abstract:Over the recent years X-ray differential phase-contrast imaging was developed for the hard X-ray regime as produced from laboratory X-ray sources. The technique uses a grating-based Talbot-Lau interferometer and was shown to yield image contrast gain, which makes it very interesting to the fields of medical imaging and non-destructive testing, respectively. In addition to X-ray attenuation contrast, the differential phase-contrast and dark-field images provide different structural information about a specimen. For the dark-field even at length scales much smaller than the spatial resolution of the imaging system. Physical interpretation of the dark-field information as present in radiographic and tomographic (CT) images requires a detailed look onto the geometric orientation between specimen and the setup. During phase-stepping the drop in intensity modulation, due to local scattering effects within the specimen is reproduced in the dark-field signal. This signal shows strong dependencies on micro-porosity and micro-fibers if these are numerous enough in the object. Since a grating-interferometer using a common unidirectional line grating is sensitive to X-ray scattering in one plane only, the dark-field image is influenced by the fiber orientations with respect to the grating bars, which can be exploited to obtain anisotropic structural information. With this contribution, we attempt to extend existing models for 2D projections to 3D data by analyzing dark-field contrast tomography of anisotropically structured materials such as carbon fiber reinforced carbon (CFRC).

Abstract:X-ray diffusive dark-field imaging, which allows spatially unresolved microstructure to be mapped across a sample, is an increasingly popular tool in an array of settings. Here, we present a new algorithm for phase and dark-field computed tomography based on the x-ray Fokker-Planck equation. Needing only a coherent x-ray source, sample, and detector, our propagation-based algorithm can map the sample density and dark-field/diffusion properties of the sample in 3D. Importantly, incorporating dark-field information in the density reconstruction process enables a higher spatial resolution reconstruction than possible with previous propagation-based approaches. Two sample exposures at each projection angle are sufficient for the successful reconstruction of both the sample density and dark-field Fokker-Planck diffusion coefficients. We anticipate that the proposed algorithm may be of benefit in biomedical imaging and industrial settings.

Abstract:X-ray dark-field imaging creates a representation of the sample where contrast is generated by subresolution features within the volume under inspection. These are detected by a local measurement of the radiation field's angular distribution, and how it is affected by the interaction with matter. X-ray dark-field imaging typically requires taking multiple exposures for separating the contributions to the detected X-ray intensity arising from scattering, refraction and attenuation; a procedure often called phase retrieval. We propose an approach to retrieve an X-ray dark-field image from a single X-ray shot. We demonstrate the method using a laboratory-based, rotating anode X-ray tube system without the need for coherent radiation or a high-resolution detector. This reduces the complexity of data acquisition, enabling faster scanning and increasing dose efficiency. Moreover, our approach reduces the problem dimensionality by one, with substantial implications for data-intensive applications like tomography. The model assumes a homogeneous material, and we show this is a valid hypothesis for soft biological tissues by reconstructing dark-field tomography images from data sets containing a single shot per view. We believe our method to be broadly applicable and relevant for many X-ray dark-field imaging implementations, including fast radiography, directional dark-field and for use with pulsed X-ray sources.

Abstract:X-ray dark-field imaging is usually performed with a Talbot–Lau interferometer, but the quality of its analyser grating is limited by the fabrication process. This makes it difficult to achieve a large area and high aspect ratio. In this study, the analyser grating is abandoned and dark-field imaging is realized using only one absorption grating. The optimal grating position is derived theoretically in the single absorption grating x-ray dark-field imaging, and the conclusion is partially verified by the experiment. Meanwhile, the optimal object position for dark-field imaging has also been obtained from both the theory and experiment. In the process of comparing x-ray dark-field imaging with x-ray refraction imaging, it is found that both of them can be explained by geometric optics, showing the intrinsic relationship between them.

Abstract:X-ray dark-field imaging enables a spatially-resolved visualization of ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering. Using phantom measurements, we demonstrate that a material's effective dark-field signal may be reduced by modification of the visibility spectrum by other dark-field-active objects in the beam. This is the dark-field equivalent of conventional beam-hardening, and is distinct from related, known effects, where the dark-field signal is modified by attenuation or phase shifts. We present a theoretical model for this group of effects and verify it by comparison to the measurements. These findings have significant implications for the interpretation of dark-field signal strength in polychromatic measurements.

Correcting directional dark-field x-ray imaging artefacts using position-dependent image deblurring and attenuation removal

Abstract:In recent years, a novel x-ray imaging modality has emerged that reveals unresolved sample microstructure via a "dark-field image", which provides complementary information to conventional "bright-field" images, such as attenuation and phase-contrast modalities. This x-ray dark-field signal is produced by unresolved microstructures scattering the x-ray beam resulting in localised image blur. Dark-field retrieval techniques extract this blur to reconstruct a dark-field image. Unfortunately, the presence of non-dark-field blur such as source-size blur or the detector point-spread-function can affect the dark-field retrieval as they also blur the experimental image. In addition, dark-field images can be degraded by the artefacts induced by large intensity gradients from attenuation and propagation-based phase contrast, particularly around sample edges. By measuring any non-dark-field blurring across the image plane and removing it from experimental images, as well as removing attenuation and propagation-based phase contrast, we show that a directional dark-field image can be retrieved with fewer artefacts and more consistent quantitative measures. We present the details of these corrections and provide "before and after" directional dark-field images of samples imaged at a synchrotron source. This paper utilises single-grid directional dark-field imaging, but these corrections have the potential to be broadly applied to other x-ray imaging techniques.

Abstract:Dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) is a nondestructive full-field imaging technique providing three dimensional mapping of microstructure and local strain fields in deeply embedded crystalline elements. This is achieved by placing an objective lens in the diffracted beam, giving a magnified projection image. So far, the method has been applied with a time resolution of milliseconds to hours. In this work, we consider the feasibility of DFXM at the picosecond time scale using an X-ray free electron laser source and a pump-probe scheme. We combine thermomechanical strain wave simulations with geometrical optics and wavefront propagation optics to simulate DFXM images of phonon dynamics in a diamond single crystal. Using the specifications of the XCS instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) as an example results in simulated DFXM images clearly showing the propagation of a strain wave.

Abstract:We demonstrate the capability of laboratory-based x-ray microscopes, using intensity-modulation masks, to access the sub-micron length scale in the dark field contrast channel while maintaining micron resolution in the resolved (refraction and attenuation) channels. The dark field contrast channel reveals the presence of ensembles of samples' features below the system resolution. Resolved refraction and attenuation channels provide multi-modal high-resolution imaging down to the micron scale. We investigate the regimes of modulated and un-modulated dark field as well as refraction, quantifying their dependence on the relationship between feature size in the imaged object and aperture size in the intensity-modulation mask. We propose an analytical model to link the measured signal with the sample's microscopic properties. Finally, we demonstrate the relevance of the microscopic dark field contrast channel in applications from both the life and physical sciences, providing proof of concept results for imaging collagen bundles in cartilage and dendritic growth in lithium batteries.

Abstract:We introduce a structured illumination technique for dark-field x-ray microscopy optimized for three-dimensional imaging of ordered materials at sub-micrometer length scales. Our method utilizes a coded aperture to spatially modulate the incident x-ray beam on the sample, enabling the reconstruction of the sample's 3D structure from images captured at various aperture positions. Unlike common volumetric imaging techniques such as tomography, our approach casts a scanning x-ray silhouette of a coded aperture for depth resolution along the axis of diffraction, eliminating any need for sample rotation or rastering, leading to a highly stable imaging modality. This modification provides robustness against geometric uncertainties during data acquisition, particularly for achieving sub-micrometer resolutions where geometric uncertainties typically limit resolution. We introduce the image reconstruction model and validate our results with experimental data on an isolated twin domain within a bulk single crystal of an iron pnictide obtained using a dark-field x-ray microscope. This timely advancement aligns with the enhanced brightness upgrade of the world's synchrotron radiation facilities, opening unprecedented opportunities in imaging.

Abstract:Abstract A method for extracting the dark-field signal in propagation-based phase-contrast imaging is proposed. In the case of objects consisting predominantly of a single material, or several different materials with similar ratios of the real decrement to the imaginary part of the complex refractive index, the proposed method requires a single image for extraction of the dark-field signal in two-dimensional projection imaging. In the case of three-dimensional tomographic imaging, the method needs only one image to be collected at each projection angle. Initial examples using simulated and experimental data indicate that this method can improve visualization of small sharp features inside a larger object, e.g. the visualization of microcalcifications in propagation-based x-ray breast cancer imaging. It is suggested that the proposed approach may be useful in other forms of biomedical imaging, where it can help one to obtain additional small-angle scattering information without increasing the radiation dose to the sample.

Abstract:Significance X-ray Talbot−Lau grating interferometry provides a differential phase contrast and a dark-field image containing scattering information. The dark-field image is sensitive to granular and fibrous microstructures with sizes in the range of the grating periods (circa 5 μm), much below the typical resolution of medical imaging techniques like angiography or fluoroscopy (circa 150 μm). Dark-field contrast is influenced by the orientation of the microstructure in the object. We present an approach to recover the local microstructure orientation in a tomographic 3D reconstruction. Per voxel, we quantitatively reconstruct the vector of the dominant local orientation and the amount of (an)isotropic scattering for relatively large samples using a standard medical X-ray setup. This is experimentally shown for various specimens exhibiting varying degrees of structural orderings.
Dark-field tomography of an attenuating object using intrinsic x-ray speckle tracking

Abstract:Purpose: We investigate how an intrinsic speckle tracking approach to speckle-based x-ray imaging is used to extract an object's effective dark-field (DF) signal, which is capable of providing object information in three dimensions. Approach: The effective DF signal was extracted using a Fokker-Planck type formalism, which models the deformations of illuminating reference beam speckles due to both coherent and diffusive scatter from the sample. Here, we assumed that (a) small-angle scattering fans at the exit surface of the sample are rotationally symmetric and (b) the object has both attenuating and refractive properties. The associated inverse problem of extracting the effective DF signal was numerically stabilized using a "weighted determinants" approach. Results: Effective DF projection images, as well as the DF tomographic reconstructions of the wood sample, are presented. DF tomography was performed using a filtered back projection reconstruction algorithm. The DF tomographic reconstructions of the wood sample provided complementary, and otherwise inaccessible, information to augment the phase contrast reconstructions, which were also computed. Conclusions: An intrinsic speckle tracking approach to speckle-based imaging can tomographically reconstruct an object's DF signal at a low sample exposure and with a simple experimental setup. The obtained DF reconstructions have an image quality comparable to alternative x-ray DF techniques.

TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry

Abstract:As an emerging imaging modality, X-ray grating-based dark-field imaging provides valuable complementary information to conventional attenuation-based imaging. Dark-field imaging exploits the small-angle scattering arising from microstructures within a sample on length scales well below the system resolution. With the introduction of Talbot-Lau interferometer, dark-field imaging has demonstrated significantly improved radiological benefits in small-animal studies, especially for lung diseases. Recent development of dark-field chest radiography and human-sized dark-field computed tomography prototypes enables clinical dark-field imaging with human patients in the near future. In this review, we summarize recent advances in X-ray grating-based dark-field imaging, including dark-field chest radiography, dark-field tomography and dark-field tensor tomography, and introduce the potential in biomedical and industrial applications. We also discuss the limitations of current studies, and future hardware challenges to be overcome before the clinical routine use of X-ray grating-based dark-field imaging.

Abstract:Dark field X-ray microscopy (DXFM) can visualize microstructural distortions in bulk crystals. Using the femtosecond X-ray pulses generated by X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL), DFXM can achieve sub-{\mu}m spatial resolution and <100 fs time resolution simultaneously. In this paper, we demonstrate ultrafast DFXM measurements at the European XFEL to visualize an optically-driven longitudinal strain wave propagating through a diamond single crystal. We also present two DFXM scanning modalities that are new to the XFEL sources: spatially 3D and 2D axial-strain scans with sub-{\mu}m spatial resolution. With this progress in XFEL-based DFXM, we discuss new opportunities to study multi-timescale spatio-temporal dynamics of microstructures.

Abstract:A new method for dark field imaging is introduced which uses scanned electron diffraction (or 4DSTEM - 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy) datasets as its input. Instead of working on simple summation of intensity, it works on a sparse representation of the diffraction patterns in terms of a list of their diffraction peaks. This is tested on a thin perovskite film containing structural ordering resulting in additional superlattice spots that reveal details of domain structures, and is shown to give much better selectivity and contrast than conventional virtual dark field imaging. It is also shown to work well in polycrystalline aggregates of CuO nanoparticles. In view of the higher contrast and selectivity, and the complete exclusion of diffuse scattering from the image formation, it is expected to be of significant benefit for characterisation of a wide variety of crystalline materials.
