Abstract:The utilization of Co-Cr-Fe-based black pigments bears considerable significance within the realm of commercial ceramic pigments, owing to their distinctive spinel structure, remarkable high-temperature stability, and exceptional chromatic attributes. This study delves into the synthesis of diverse black pigment configurations by employing the co-precipitation method, leveraging the interplay of these three metallic oxides. This investigation encompasses a comprehensive scrutiny of ion valences, crystal structures and parameters, colorimetric properties, and their interrelationships. The methodology integrates the response surface methodology (RSM) framework, using theoretical formulations to navigate the material ratios and elucidating the associations between the resultant compositions and color coordinate values, aligned with the CIE-Lab* colorimetric methodology. The derived predictive models yielded an optimized black pigment composition, characterized by heightened black intensity and a refined formulation.

Abstract:A new green pigment with a high near-infrared reflectance based on a Cr2O3-TiO2-Co2O3-ZnO composition was synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The phase structure, near-infrared reflectance and color parameters were characterized by XRD, SEM, UV-vis and colorimeter, respectively. The effect of the zinc oxide content in the original mixture on spectral reflectance and color was investigated. The results show that the reflectance of the pigment increases with the increasing content of ZnO. In addition, the reflectance increases rapidly from a low level at the red edge, ranging from 680 to 750 nm. In addition, a blue shift of the red edge was observed by increasing the content of ZnO.

Abstract:Organic pigments are important in a range of fields, from printing ink to industrial coatings. Azo pigments are some of the most common pigments in use today, but they typically have poor solvent solubility and tend to agglomerate. Consequently, the size and crystal structure of the pigment particles has a crucial effect on their optical and physical properties, such as color strength and solvent resistance, respectively. Several technologies, such as microreactors, have been developed to control pigment particle size, but an in-depth study of the effects of modification conditions on pigment properties (color, flowability, and solvent resistance) has not been reported to date. Therefore, in this paper, we report the surface modification of C.I. Pigment Red 146 particles using anionic (Igepon T) and non-ionic surfactants (Peregal O-25) and additives (DB-60 as the second diazo component and graphene oxide) on the pigment properties. In addition, we examined the effect of hydrothermal treatment at different temperatures on the same properties. The various modifications resulted in an increase in the solvent resistance, a reduction in the particle size (from 30.581 to 12.252 μm), a narrowing of the particle size distribution, and an increase in hydrophilicity. In addition, the color brightness and brilliance were significantly improved, and the maximum color strength reached 112.6%. These findings have applications for the development of pigments having enhanced color properties, solvent resistance, and processability.

Study on preparation of crystal seed of iron oxide red with wastewater from red iron oxide plant

Abstract:Based on properties of wastewater produced in the process of producing iron oxide red with high Fe2+ content and low pH,a new process of producing iron oxide red crystal seed using the sludge produced from the treatment of acid ferrous wastewater in red iron oxide plant was developed.Results showed that pH of effluent could be adjusted to 6~9,removal efficiency of Fe2+ reached 99.5%,and chroma was less than 40 times,while adding caustic soda solution(mass fraction of 30%)2.8 L per ton of wastewater.The effluent quality could meet the secondary standard of Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant(GB 18918—2002).Mixed sludge of Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 could be used to produce iron oxide red crystal seed and to further produce iron oxide red.Fe2O3 content of the final product reached 96.8%,which could meet the standard of Iron Oxide Pigments(GB/T 1863—2008).

Abstract:C.I. Pigment Red 170 (P.R. 170) is one of the widely used organic pigments, and surface modification is essential to improve its thermal stability, and solvent resistance. In this work, hydrous alumina was coated onto P.R. 170 particles by hydrolysis of Al2(SO4)3, and different coating structures/morphologies were obtained including dots, floccules and films with different thickness. The influence of pH, temperature and Al2(SO4)3 content on the hydrous alumina coating structures were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ζ-potential analysis, and several spectroscopic techniques. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pigment bleeding tests indicated that the thermal stability and solvent resistance of the pigments can be remarkably improved by a film coating, and this reveals that the consecutiveness and density of the coating layers should be the key factors for improvement of the organic pigments.

Abstract:The kaolin deposit in Jiaozuo area is excellent resource mainly hosted in Middle Carboniferous Benxi Formation.To take coal measures kaolin in Jiaozuo area as raw material,carried out mineral composition and content analyses,studied impacts on whiteness from additive kind and dosage,inlet material grain size,calcining time and calcining temperature etc.The study has demonstrated that the capped kaolin sample calcining for 4 hours at 900oC with 5% reducing agent and 2% chlorinating agent as additives,the whiteness of kaolin sample can increase from 45.84% to 88.68% and satisfy the demand of rubber filling and moderating paper coating.Tested results can provide major foundation to exploit and use of coal measures kaolin in the area.

Abstract:In this study, a continuous-flow procedure containing four steps has been developed to synthesize Pig-ment Red 53 and modify its crystal structure. This process avoided the problems of conveying highly insoluble reaction intermediates by removing intermediate operating steps. After optimization, the over-all yield of Pigment Red 53:1 reached 97.1% in the total residence time of 80 s by this diazotization-coupling-laking-crystal transition process. From batch to continuous flow, the purity of products increased from 97.1% to 98.2% and the median diameter of pigment particles decreased from 14 & mu;m to 1.9 & mu;m. This process achieved a similar crystal transition effect in 18 s as in batch, producing & alpha;, & delta; and & nu; crystals of Pigment Red 53:2 as expected. Abstract:The garnet-structured Y-Al-Cr red pigment was synthesized by a solid-state reaction.The optimal synthetic conditions,such as reaction temperature(1000～1400 ℃) and time(1～2 h),molar ratio of Y_2O_3 to Al_2O_3(0.5～1.5),and the doping concentration(0.3%～5%) of Cr_2O_3,were systematically studied.The visible reflection spectroscopy is employed to characterize the intensity and chromaticity of the pigment.Besides the reaction conditions,the structure and particle size also affect the chromaticity of the products.Y-Al-Cr pigment,synthesized at 1300 ℃ for 1 h,with the molar ratio of Y_2O_3 to Al_2O_3 of 1∶1 and the content of Cr_2O_3 of 3%,performs the satisfactory brightness,chromaticity,and structural stability even at high temperature.

Abstract:In this work, submicron-sized ZnFe2-xCrxO4 (x = 0.4, 0.8) pigments were synthesized by a combustion assisted two-step method. The samples and corresponding ceramic inks are investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, colorimeter, and laser particle size analyzer. The grindability of the pigments and the printing performance (rheological properties, surface tension, filterability and storage stability) of the inks are evaluated. Our research reveals that although the calcination temperature in the present method is 300 ?C lower than the conventional solid-state reaction route, the as-prepared samples belong to a pure spinel phase and present highly saturated reddishbrown tone. Compared to the samples prepared from solid-state reaction route, the synthesized submicronsized pigments exhibit superior grindability. The corresponding ceramic inks present excellent coloring ability, filterability and storage stability. Our work confirms that the submicron-sized ZnFe2-xCrxO4 pigments synthesized by the combustion assisted two-step method are quite suitable for ZnFe2-xCrxO4-based reddish-brown ceramic inks.

Abstract:Solid solutions of ceramic pigments of red shade have been synthesized based on YAlO3 perovskite structure doped with chromium by means of conventional synthesis; that is, the “ceramic route”. To optimize this synthesis, an emphasis has been made on the study of stoichiometry, calcination conditions and mineralizer incorporation. Various studies have demonstrated the high stability of perovskite structures, which ensures stable coloration at high temperatures. This is a highly important factor in the ceramic sector, given the scarcity of red glazes functional at temperatures close to those required of porcelain stoneware and their environmental constraints. Such a limitation makes it impossible in the European community to manufacture using toxic materials such as Se and Cd (cadmium sulfoselenide) that offer interesting colors at low temperatures. Pigments have been synthesized within the Y1−xCrxAlO3, YCrxAl1−xO3 and Y1−xAl1−yCrx+yO3 chromium-doped systems in molar ratios between n = 0.01 molar and n = 0.10 molar. The pigments obtained have been characterized by X-ray diffraction to identify the crystalline phases responsible for the shade; that is, the formation of the perovskite crystalline structure YAlO3 responsible for the red shade, together with lateral phases of garnet Y3Al5O12 of lower intensity. Visible ultraviolet spectrophotometry shows absorption bands corresponding to Cr(III) in octahedral position and the appearance of Cr(IV) in both octahedral and tetrahedral positions. The morphology of the samples was studied using a scanning electron microscope, obtaining information from the secondary and back scattered electrons. The viability of its use in ceramic glazes was verified after applying them mixed at 4% by weight in a glaze to an industrial porous single-firing cycle, collecting the L*a*b* chromatic coordinates using a visible ultraviolet spectrophotometer based on the CIE L*a*b* system, giving rise to red colorations.

Abstract:Palygorskite (Pal) was a kind of magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral with one-dimensional rod and layer chain structure. Herein, Pal hybrid iron oxide red pigment (Pal/α-Fe2O3) was prepared by grinding method. Pal acted as a matrix to fix α-Fe2O3 particles and influenced the performances of composite pigments by changing the particle size and distribution of α-Fe2O3. The color difference analysis showed that the color performances of composite pigments were closely related to the ratio of Pal to α-Fe2O3. Compared with the original red iron oxide pigment, the tinting strength of the composite pigment was increased by about 15%. When Pal/α-Fe2O3 was used as red pigment for coating, it had good storage stability for waterborne coating, and improved its adhesion and corrosion resistance. Pal/α-Fe2O3 composite pigments had excellent high temperature resistance, which could increase the calcination temperature of ceramic pigments and were better used in the ceramic industry. The synthetic method of Pal/α-Fe2O3 composite pigment was simple, low cost and environmentally friendly, and could be applied to large-scale industrial production.

Abstract:An inverse spinel green nano-ceramic pigment Co0.6Zn0.4Al0.8Cr1.2-xSmxO4 was synthesized by complex combustion method.The X-ray diffraction (XRD),thermogravimetric analyzer (TG-DTA),scanning electron microscopy (SEM),high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS),UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (UV -Vis DRS) spectroscopy were used to determine the pigment phase,structure,particle size,composition,and reflection spectra.The results show that the introduction of Zn2+,Cr3+ and Sm3+ can change the ionic framework in the tetrahedral and octahedral spinel CoAl2O4,and the average particle size of inverse spinel Co0.6Zr0.4Al0.8Cr1.2-xSmxO4 is in the range of (10-15) nm.Their color will be changed from blue to green with the increase of Sm3+ content.

Abstract:High titanium slag production will generate a lot of dust containing some ferrotitanium resources. To make full use of the resources, the high titanium slag recovery dust is used to prepare the iron oxide red in the experimental study. The high titanium slag dust is treated by hydrochloric acid leaching heated under constant-pressure, and then hydrolytic acid leaching filtrate is heated under constant pressure to prepare iron oxide red and recover hydrochloric acid. The impacts of hcl concentration, acid leaching temperature and time, and hydrolysis concentration time on the productivity of iron oxide red are studied, and the analytical characterization is carried out for the product with XRF, XRD and IR. The results show that: 90% iron oxide red containing Fe2O3 can be obtained under the conditions i.e. HCl concentration of 6mol/L, reaction temperature of 90â„ƒ, acid leaching time of 5h, and hydrolysis concentration time of 1.5h, and the hydrochloric acid recovery rate exceeds 80%.
Pigments based on Er2O3-Al2O3: Preparation and colouring performance in zirconia ceramics

Abstract:Two types of pigments, those with ErAlO3 and Er3Al5O12 as the main crystal phase, were synthesized by the gel-polymerization method. The colour performance of the pink pigments in zirconia ceramics was also studied. Field scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersion spectrometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis–NIR absorption spectrometry, and colourimetry were applied for phase composition, microstructure and colour property analyses of pigments and pink ceramics. The experimental results showed that in the Er2O3-Al2O3 system, the Er3Al5O12 phase occurred at a lower temperature and the ErAlO3 phase appeared at a relatively higher temperature, accompanied by a small amount of Er3Al5O12 and Er4Al2O9. Both ErAlO3 and Er3Al5O12 displayed absorption in the visible light range. The calcination temperature had a greater effect on the red tone of ErAlO3 pigments than on Er3Al5O12. The main absorption peaks of Er3Al5O12 in the visible light range were blue-shifted, resulting in a slightly higher yellowness value b*. When zirconia was coloured with these two pigments, neither of them could stably exist at high temperatures. Er3+ might dissolve into the zirconia lattice to form a cubic fluorite solid solution (FSS), and the remaining Al2O3 phase was distributed in the zirconia solid solution matrix at high temperatures. If the pigment of ErAlO3 is added up to 5 wt%, the redness value a* reached the maximum value.

Abstract:A green nano-sized ceramic pigment Co0.6Zn0.4Al0.8Cr1.2-xSmxO4 has been successfully prepared by doping ions Zn2+, Cr3+, and Sm3+ into the crystalline CoAl2O4 spinel and using the complex-gel method along with agar as complexing and combustion agent. The Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Thermo-gravimeter, High resolution transmission electron microscopy, Automatic color reader, and UV Vis diffuse reflectance were applied to characterize the pigment power and its gel precursor. The results reveal that the introduction of Zn2+, Cr3+, and Sm3+ could change the occupation status of ions in the tetrahedral and octahedral framework of CoAl2O4 spinel, leading to the colorant variation of the blue cobalt pigment CoAl2O4, With increasing the content of Sm3+ ion, the reflection peak position of the pigments in visible spectrum appeared a red-shift, ie the color transition from blue green to yellow green, and the average reflectivity in the violet region decreased to 13.31%, and the band gap energy also changed from 3.47 to 3.20 eV. This illustrates the better UV absorption of this green pigment and can be used as UV shielding material. With the hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide solution treatment, this pigment was found to be durable in chemical stability.

Abstract:Red Monascus Pigment (RMP), a natural pigment, has attracted significant attention due to its suitability for food use and potential health benefits. However, preserving its stability and exploring value-added development opportunities remain crucial challenges. This study outlined the utilization of RMP, by successfully preparing hydrogel beads encapsulating RMP crude extract (RMPCE) through Ca2+-mediated chitosan (CS)/sodium alginate (SA) encapsulation (CO-RMPHB). A systematic investigation into the fabrication and stability parameters, including preparation conditions, temperature, monochromatic light and storage time, was undertaken. Through optimization (SA: 2.50 wt%; CaCl2: 6.00 wt%; CS: 0.50 wt%), maximum encapsulation efficiency of 73.54 ± 2.16 % was achieved. The maximum swelling degree of blank hydrogel beads (BHB) in simulated gastric solution (pH = 1.2, 1.50 ± 0.97 %) was significantly lower than in simulated intestinal solution (pH = 7.0, 28.05 ± 1.43 %), confirming their sensitivity to pH changes. Additionally, the CO-RMPHB (66.08 %, 1000 μL) exhibited superior DPPH radical scavenging capability compared to individual RMPCE or BHB. Furthermore, analysis of the release kinetics based on zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Ritger-Peppas models revealed that RMPCE release from CO-RMPHB under in vitro digestion models followed non-Fickian diffusion. This discovery effectively addresses the challenges of the stability and controlled release of RMP, expanding its applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract:Crystalline glaze is a kind of art glaze with excellent decorative performance, the existing crystalline glaze mainly willemite crystalline glaze, systems on a single track. In this paper, the use of crystalline glaze raw materials for glass, ZnO and coke gemstones, CuO as coloring agents, using ortho- gonal to determine the formula, this paper researched that added TiO2 to the willemite crystalline glaze crystal phase composition as well as the amount of TiO2 and processing conditions on the preparation of crystalline glaze crystal flower morphology impact. The results show that under the conditions of 1250°C melting 1130°C crystallization process crystal spontaneous growth in crystalline glaze can be able to cover the entire glazed, shape of crystals was feathered, cross growth, the number of crystal increased with crystallization temperature, glaze was smooth and shiny sense. XRD and optical microscopy analysis showed that the precipitation of crystals was the long column of rutile, crystal distributed equality, under a polarizing microscope in purple, green and black, with strong aesthetic values.
Rapid solution combustion synthesis of novel superfine CaLaAl1-xCrxO4 red ceramic pigments

Abstract:Superfine CaLaAl1-xCrxO4 (x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.08, 0.10) red ceramic pigments have been prepared by solution combustion reaction and subsequent high-temperature calcination. All of the pigments were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV–Vis spectrophotometry, Laser particle size analyzer and CIE L*a*b* spectrophotometry. Moreover, the effects of the doping amount of Cr3+ ion, calcination temperature, salt assistance and synthetic routes on chromatic performance and particle size distributions of the pigments were also investigated. The results showed that CaLaAl1-xCrxO4 pigment particles prepared via solution combustion reaction and subsequent calcination were well-dispersed and uniform in size. With the increase of doping amount of Cr3+ ion, the brightness value L* of CaLaAl1-xCrxO4 pigments decreased obviously and the redness value a* increased gradually. When x = 0.08, it showed the best chromatic performance (L* = 39.37, a* = 21.33, b* = 13.99). In addition, the synthetic pigments possess excellent high temperature stability which is conducive to the application of ceramic pigments. Most importantly, the synthetic method of CaLaAl1-xCrxO4 red ceramic pigments is not only cheap in raw materials, but also easy to industrialize.
